Using a chromecast without a google account?

cross-posted from: programming.dev/post/19441267

I have a 2nd-gen chromecast, it's factory reset. If i plug it in all it tells me is to install the app to start configuring.

I don't have a google account not do i want to install/use google-related stuff on my phone.

My home router doesn't register any new device, which makes sense since the cast doesn't know the SSID/pass of the WiFi.

Does it try to ping some service/port? Multicast perhaps? Where would it get an IP from without authenticating?

My (wired) PC runs gentoo.

How can i get it to work in these conditions?

in reply to 0x0

Probably not that helpful, but i do know of a few articles installing linux on a Chromecast

in reply to 0x0

In that line, is there an open standards, no Google required answer to the Chromecast?

Microsoft Windows kernel changes don't suddenly mean big things for Linux gaming

cross-posted from: lemm.ee/post/42362729

There's a lot of blog posts and news articles being written right now centred around Microsoft's plans for updates to Windows 11, and potential kernel changes, with some thinking this means big things for Linux gaming.

Sorry to say, but I'm here to bring a more realistic take and to help keep all your feet on the ground.

quite relevant to yesterday's discussion.

in reply to RmDebArc_5

The majority of "Linux issues" is created intentionally. It's often not enough to not support Linux officially (even if there would be no additional work involved anyway) and let players figure out problems on their own. A lot of studios, publishers and developers actually go out of their way and actively invest time to block Linux.

So nothing will obviously change. Windows could run on a fully compatible Linux kernel tomorrow and games would still check for Linux to artificially create issues.

in reply to Ooops

The only pure-linux issues that I have faced in the last few years are due to Wayland. And it's not an issue, it's just the legacy application has not yet embraced Wayland yet. Otherwise it has been smooth sailing for me.

Finally a good take. Or maybe I'm just a pessimist lol

Microsoft are masters at dancing around anti competitive regulation. Xbox is struggling, they've said so themselves. I think they're going to focus more on Gamepass and the Windows Store so making it as difficult as possible for the likes of the Steamdeck to succeeded is in their best interest. If they can push companies to adopt their new framework and at the same time make that framework almost impossible to implement into wine then its a win win. They can hurt wine while painting it as better security so they're isn't another CrowdStrike incident.

Anticompetitive practices disguised as user security.

I know linux isn't very popular for the general public but Apple has their own implementation of wine in development and Google has flooded schools with Chromebooks. If I was Michaelsoft, I'd want to crush the competition quickly and discreetly now before I implement my Windows subscription so people don't have any good alternatives left

Linux 6.11 released

Linus has released the 6.11 kernel. ""I'm once again on the road and not in my normal timezone, but it's Sunday afternoon here in Vienna, and 6.11 is out."" Significant changes in this release include new io_uring operations for bind() and listen(), the nested bottom-half locking patches, the ability to write to busy executable files, support for writing block drivers in Rust, support for atomic write operations in the block layer, the dedicated bucket slab allocator, the vDSO implementation of getrandom(), and more. See the LWN merge-window summaries (part 1, part 2) for more information.

The answer seems to be yes but I have not seen much detail on what works now and what does not. It also seems that device trees are required for each device and I have only seen that for one ASUS and one Lenevo so far.

If anybody knows more, I would love an update.

DaVinci Resolve not recognizing iGPU

Hey there folks! I recently made the switch to Linux and I really want to do some editing using DaVinci Resolve. My computer is running an intel i7 7th Gen with no dedicated GPU. I used this tutorial to get through the initial installation but now the app just crashes warning "Unsupported GPU Processing Mode," advising me to "Please review the GPU drivers and GPU
configuration under preferences." This is what I see when I go to that menu. Any idea what I need to do to make DaVinci recognize the integrated GPU?
in reply to Cornflake

I went through this recently and was not able to resolve it. Unfortunately, it looks like there is no way to use Resolve with an iGPU.
in reply to Cornflake

DaVinci Resolve does not support Intel cards under Linux. Not iGPU, and not even the DEDICATED Intel cards. No Intel at all.

It looks like I have a great place to land if fzf ever starts to make my life difficult. Thank you!
in reply to jbrains

fzf has some unique features of its own, like multi-select. Maybe one day Fuzzel will add that.

I find it disturbing that you promote piracy-favoring Monero but not Bitcoin itself.

Where is Syncthing?

Librera Reader is closed-source, as is Proton Mail.

I'd like to recommend the addition of Waterfox.

Analysis: Nuclear war would be more devastating for Earth’s climate than cold war predictions

in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

That's an interesting way of framing Russia ending the world in a nuclear holocaust because Ukraine didn't *want to be a part of Russia's sphere of influence*.

It would be best for everyone if Russia would stop the escalation, and I hope they do. If not, we have to find a better solution to imperialism than appeasement, because that doesn't work long-term either.

in reply to trevor

The same way the US would end the world if Russia started building bases in Mexico. In fact, this exact scenario already happened during the Cuban missile crisis. Anybody who keeps peddling the notion that Russia should just accept NATO encroachment is deeply intellectually dishonest.

It's obvious to everyone with even a minimally functioning brain that Russia isn't just going to pack up and go home after nearly three years of war. Especially given that Russia is very obviously winning the war at this point. NATO has a choice to accept reality that they lost or to start a nuclear holocaust. It's pretty clear that there are plenty of imbeciles living in NATO countries who would prefer the latter.

Meanwhile, this whole narrative of appeasement is the height of bullshit. Everybody appeased the US and NATO when they invaded Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Syria, and countless other countries. The US currently occupies a larger percentage of Syria than Russia is of Ukraine. The appeasement just means that NATO has to accept that another country is doing what NATO does regularly.

in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

Your logic is evading me. Russia is just doing a new three year war with whatever they want next and then again and again since it's working. I'm not in favor of nuclear war but if it ends my miserable life I'm all in.
in reply to daed

Your logic is evading me. If you think Russia just has infinite capacity to do war without end then you really need to learn how economics, supply chains, and logistics work. If you want to end your miserable life then go sign up for the foreign legion in Ukraine and leave the rest of us alone. It's incredible to me how western parasites would rather end humanity than accept that they don't get to run the whole world.

in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

"NATO encroachment" is a direct result of Russian aggression. If Russia had stayed out of Ukraine in 2014 then Ukraine would not have asked for NATO training assistance. If they had stayed out in 2022, Finland and Sweden would not be members.

in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

You can't refute the argument so you just start yapping about some random opinions and move the goalposts to another continent. And then you talk about "intellectual dishonesty" lmao
This entry was edited (4 months ago)
in reply to rbesfe

I've literally refuted your argument by demonstrating that NATO expansion has been happening since the fall of USSR and that plenty of prominent people in the west have warned that it would culminate in a war. Nobody is moving any goal posts on you here. You're the one who can't refute basic facts of the situation, and having no integrity, you try to deflect from that. It's both pathetic and transparent. Good job outing yourself as a troll. Bye.
in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

You clearly lack reading comprehension skills, because my argument had nothing to do with the timeline of NATO expansion
in reply to rbesfe

That's because your argument is a straw man that ignores context and history. Now run along and do your trolling elsewhere.

Yes, it did start in the 90s. With this: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia…

Now who violated the treaty?

Who’s being intellectually dishonest in this thread again?

in reply to blarth

The US doing a color revolution in Ukraine in 2014 was what started the civil war there last I checked. So, pretty clearly it was the west that violated the sovereignty of Ukraine by violently overthrowing a democratically elected government and replacing it with literal fascists.

You are the one being intellectually dishonest in this thread.
