France's Barnier makes last-minute concession to far right in bid to avoid being toppled

PARIS (Reuters) - French Prime Minister Michel Barnier on Monday made another major concession to Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally party, dropping planned cuts to medication reimbursements in a last-minute bid to get his 2025 budget bill over the line.

It was not immediately clear if that would be enough to save his fragile coalition from being toppled this week, with an RN spokesman telling Reuters there were other key demands ahead of a crunch parliamentary vote at 3:00 p.m. (1400 GMT).

It is at least the third time Barnier has given in to RN demands after he scrapped an electricity price hike worth some 3 billion euros last week and agreed to reduce free medical help to illegal migrants.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger steps down from struggling chipmaker

Dec 2 (Reuters) - Intel (INTC.O) Chief Executive Pat Gelsinger has stepped down less than four years after taking the helm of the company, handing control to two lieutenants as the faltering American chipmaking icon searches for a permanent replacement.
Gelsinger, who resigned on Dec. 1, left the company before the completion of an ambitious and costly four-year plan to restore the company's lead in making the fastest and smallest computer chips, a crown it lost to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (2330.TW) which makes chips for Intel rivals such as Nvidia (NVDA.O)
While Gelsinger has assured both investors and U.S. officials, who are subsidizing Intel's turnaround, that his manufacturing plans remain on track, the full results will not be known until next year, when the company aims to bring a flagship laptop chip back into its own factories.

Intel should have pulled it's 13/14 Gen chips the moment it became clear they had serious problems. Admit you screwed up and fix it.

Continuing to sell something you know is crap is a long-term reputation hit you are NOT going to recover from.

in reply to NutWrench

This is not due to the 13/14th generation CPU recall, rather Intel as a whole is floundering.

They missed the entire AI gravy train, losing market share to AMD, lost Apples business, etcetera. Intels foundry requires a lot of capital for both RnD and to keep the fabs running. They are losing market share and they have higher cost business compared to their competitors.

Petition: Ban fossil fuel advertising and sponsorship

The Our Planet Our Future Book Club read and discussed Badvertising: Polluting Our Minds and Fuelling Climate Chaos, which points out that advertising often urges us to do things contrary to our best interest, for example high-carbon activities like flying, or buying SUVs, and argues that such advertising should be banned. There's a petition on the subject here.

looks like the innovation here is with using ELF spectrum which penetrates seawater
in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

I figured something cool was happening to allow them to use radar from the air. So it's not even radar, it's like, ELFdar.

Really weird they went for the "lightspeed" angle tho

for sure, I find most of the time science reporting actually makes it harder to understand what the tech does rather than explain it
in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

In the spirit of dumbing down the plot to make sure viewers don't turn away, they end up making totally nonsensical (if not misleading) content.
in reply to lemmeout

I suspect that a lot of the time people doing science reporting have a fairly tenuous grasp on the subject themselves as well.
in reply to queermunist she/her

RF is still RF, the only difference between what they're shooting into the water to detect subs and what you're shooting into your hot pockets is output power and frequency. It's still radio detection and ranging, just at a frequency not typically used for it. Microwave frequencies are used for what one would consider to be typical radar applications, while extremely low frequency would be better suited for communications.
in reply to halyk.the.red

Infrared isn't red, though. Seems like it's worth making a distinction between different frequencies if the way it interacts with matter is different.

what are the practical advantages/disadvantages of this over vaapi?
in reply to umbrella

Cross-platform, I guess. However, the only platform of commercial interest (and that I know of) that offers Vulkan as the primary, supported API is Android.

Pro-Palestinian journalist found dead on rooftop in Marseille

French journalist and renowned Middle East expert Marine Vlahovic was found dead at her home in Marseille on Monday, November 27.

According to reports by La Provence, her body was discovered on the roof terrace of her residence by friends who had grown concerned after she failed to respond to calls or messages. She was 39 years old.

According to ARTE Radio, Marine Vlahovic had dedicated part of her short life to the Palestinian cause.

In Gaza Calling, she compiled video and voice messages from her colleagues and friends in Gaza, trapped under the bombs.

in reply to geneva_convenience

Found dead while making a documentary about the killings in gaza. Of all the rotten luck, eh.

I wonder if there will be an actual transparent independent autopsy or will it be some sort of sham.
I mean I dont wonder very much, we all know the answer. But I still wonder a little bit.

Fedora Linux Flatpak cool apps to try for December - Fedora Magazine

reshared this

in reply to petsoi

Love these posts. Plus every month you get to see the flatpak haters try to convince us we are using the wrong technology.
in reply to ddh

I never really understood flatpak hate.

The storage use is negligible nowadays.

Permission requests feel way more user friendly and modern.

Finally linux has a universal package and people still hate it. It's probably one of the best things to happen to linux in years

in reply to ddh

Flatpak has its issues, sure, but it’s better and more open than snap, while maintaining utterly simple usability.
in reply to gravitas_deficiency

Great news! Security and build-release people also hate snap junk.

Same reasons.

Ask us about npm next.

in reply to ddh

flatpak haters

We like terms like "security professionals" or "build-release engineers" to describe why package validation and provenance is important, as is SSoT for avoiding dependency hell by proxy.

But when you don't understand the real terms, use whatever ya like. Yes, honey, that's the goer-upper, and now we press the button for the floor we want.

in reply to ouch

Can't see text scroll like hackermens. Takes up a bit more space. Have to copy and paste a directory into flatseal if your folders are separated.
in reply to ddh

Flatpack is alr ig,But I have the AUR on Cachyos which is much better then Flatpack.
