The taxman always gets their due

They may have nothing to hide but they have IP to protect to stay in business. What a ridiculous thing to say.

whatsapp doesn't have the best app. It doesn't look the best, it's not the fastest. It was just very great back in the days. But not anymore. Whatsapp could easily publish the code. It's not the client, it's the server. They could even publish the server code. It's not the code itself. It's the people using it.

Could an update brick my display [EndeavourOS]?

in reply to overgrown

This happens to me when using VGA and the connector isn't well seated. Are you using an analog connector like VGA? Can you double check that the connector is well seated on both ends?
in reply to Jumuta

Oh sorry it was not obvious to me that this was a crosspost so I didn't see the lengthy explanation provided! Indeed, my comment makes little sense, apologies.

This issue is also visible on my firmware setting (BIOS)

That means it's hardware.

Kodifitzwell's Infinity works with RD

Since RD made some changes to its API, lots of addons have stopped working with RD. So I have been searching for ones that are working now. I checked out the kodifitzwell repo and found that the Infinity addon hosted there is working.

The other addons that I have found that work are:
- Fen light
- Otaku

Might try crew next.

Kind of glad uni fieldwork ended early today, I'm so fried. Bad news is some setbacks re method, good news is we've gotten a lot more context and some real direction with where to go from here. It's late in the scheme of things but at least this project feels more real now, for all its numerous flaws

Forgot to put my student permit on the car because I was in a rush this morning though - copped a $200 fine. Just what I need. Ruined my day
in reply to just_kitten

Any chance you can get the fine waived by calling them and explaining the situation?
in reply to Duenan

No because although it's University land the parking is overseen by Council and so they do not give two shits. "I had a 7am start and was rushing to meet my supervisor to get out into the field" is not considered adequate. The stinger is that they fined me only shortly before I got back from the field anyway.... grrrrrrr
in reply to just_kitten

It might be worth a shot. Just a simple explanation, was in a rush, forgot to put up permit, first time, lesson learned, attach photo of said permit. I got out of one last year with an ' official warning' because my delightful mother brought her disability permit with her, but left it in her handbag instead of applying it to the screen. Took me 5 minutes to apply for a review and saved my ass $200.
in reply to Eagle

Could I ask which council it was? I guess I could try.. I did remember to put my bloody sun shade on but not the permit. Guess I could say I was in a rush and put the shade over the permit which I'm sure happens all the time too...

I have looked at those, and it would be great if I had somewhere for them to dump it. As it is I have a very short driveway as the only possible spot, and dumping stuff there blocks the access to the house, leaving me to dig myself out - and it all has to be carted down to the back of the house via a narrow side path. Whilst being unable to leave until the work is done is very motivating, it is also very exhausting!

I have done bulk deliveries before - about 2 cubic meters is about the limit of what is possible for the space - but it is hard work. I've elected to spend more on bagged sugar cane mulch this time due to portability.

Tip: sudoedit often overlooked as an alternative to sudo vim

in reply to thingsiplay

Be cautious of doing this with security sensitive files. When it copies the file and gives you ownership, any sensitive data in it is exposed to any process running as your user id, and and temporary filΒ£s the editor creates may also contain the sensitive content and be owned by you.
in reply to notabot

Good point. I was always wondering how secure this is, as it works with copies of the files in my environment. Because I'm in my personal environment, doing sudoedit /etc/fstab does not let me edit other files from root while in that file. That means if any of the plugins from Vim tries to, they can't edit arbitrary files, right? (If you don't trust the plugin, then don't use, but that's another topic.) Little side note, just learned that sudoedit ~/.bashrc does not allow me to edit files in my home too.
in reply to thingsiplay

Vim is running as you, rather than root, so you wont be able to edit other files as root, and any rogue plugins wont be able to either, which is good.

Sudoedit has various guards around what it'll let you edit, in particular, you can't edit a file in a directory you already have write permission on as doing so allows the user to bypass restrictions in the sudoers setup (there's more detail in their issue tracker. If the directory is already writable though, you don't need sudoedit anyway.

in reply to thingsiplay

Meanwhile, a reverse vim enjoyer like myself, using micro to edit any file running as my user. If it requires root to write, it will simply elevate the permissions for that operation when I press Ctrl+S, asking for password if needed.

Same idea with VSCodium, but via GUI polkit prompt.

Life is good when you don't hjkl ^_^

EFF: Top 10 privacy and security resources we think are most useful right now

While this isn’t specific to the Fediverse, our privacy & security features are something that differentiates us compared to corporate owned social media.

In the wake of the 2024 election in the U.S., many people are concerned about their digital privacy. EFF has decades of experience in providing digital privacy and security resources. Here are the top ten resources that we think are most useful right now 🧡 (1/13)

If you have to break your message up into 13+ posts, maybe you should consider posting to a different platform. Mastodon - and microblogging in general, but specifically Mastodon - is terrible for this type of communication.

What are some fediverse apps that need contributors?

I'm a decent developer, but with only a couple years' professional experience and no formal training. I'm looking for open source projects to contribute to (ideally pick one or two and get dedicated to them).

I'm open to small or large projects.

I'm using this as my source of options:

fediverse.party/en/miscellaneo…

But I'm curious if there are other ones, or if you all have ideas about which ones are needing and deserving help.

Thanks!

I'd personally love to see Ibis get finished enough to become the go-to platform for fan wiki sites, replacing all the garbage ones filled with ads.
in reply to Remy Rose

I just forked it. That one seems interesting. Thanks for the suggestion.

When taking a broad longterm view, clearly Peertube and/or other video hosting and sharing alternatives to Youtube are the most strategically important since as bad as centralization/enclosure of the commons is for various mediums of online communities, the process is wholely complete in a good chunk of the world for informational videos with Youtube utterly dominating.

It is easy to underestimate how powerful of a fulcrum Youtube is for leveraging manipulation and control.

I have no idea if Peertube needs development help (I assume they likely do) and I am not sure what specifically the kinds of things they need help with are, so I say this more as a general observation.
