Living in China's Shadow: Why China will dwarf the US in under a decade

in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

I'm learning it little by little too, but I'm still at the very beginning. I agree It is known for its complexity. And It's quite different at least from European languages. But it's more interesting to study something unusual for you. :)
in reply to JustVik

For sure, it's an enjoyable kind of challenge. I also find some aspects of the language are actually easier than other languages I've learned. Not having conjugation is really nice since you just learn the word once, and the grammar is generally pretty straight forward. I got flustered about the tones at the start, but then just learned not to worry about it. People will understand you from the context even if you screw the tones up. Writing is the hardest part, but it's just a matter of repetition in the end.

how `cp` a directory with all the sub items, but not the source base !?

Hi,

I would like to copy a directory\
/path/to/source/ to /path/to/destination

/path/to/source/
    ├── file1.txt
    ├── file2.txt
    └── subdir/
        └── file3.txt

and I would like to destination (after copy look like)
/path/to/destination/
    ├── file1.txt
    ├── file2.txt
    └── subdir/
        └── file3.txt

I've tried cp -r /path/to/source/. /path/to/destination/
but the sub items ( file3.txt ) are not being copied...

Any ideas ?

Rappare skjuten i centrala Norrköping. Polisen fick ett larm om ett misstänkt grovt brott i centrala Norrköping kvart över 8 på torsdagskvällen. Odds that the boat collision was intentional on the part of the coast guard?

systemd Pilot updated with new features

A few days ago I made a post about systemd Pilot, a GTK app for managing systemd services.

Today a new version has been released based on feedback I got here and on reddit.

The app now supports quick creation of systemd services using a template and monitoring journalctl logs for any service.

Please test the latest release and share your thoughts.

in reply to mfat

I haven't tried this yet, but I will. I have a question, though. Can this be used on a remote server over ssh?
in reply to chunkystyles

Only if you can vnc/rdp into you server or forward x11.
in reply to chunkystyles

Yes. I do this. You'll want to look up X forwarding.

Once set up, you should be able to execute GUI applications installed to machines you connect to via ssh, and have their GUI show up on the machine you are connecting from.

It’s great when you have a problem and you just stumble upon a solution on Lemmy out of nowhere.

Blob-headed fish and amphibious mouse among 27 new species found in ‘thrilling’ Peru expedition

Summary

Scientists conducting a biodiversity survey in Peru's Alto Mayo region discovered 27 new species, including a blob-headed fish, amphibious mouse, and arboreal salamander. The 38-day expedition recorded over 2,000 species.

Findings include a rare semi-aquatic mouse found in a threatened swamp forest and seven new fish species. Indigenous knowledge played a key role in identifying many species.

Scientists also documented 49 threatened species, underscoring the region’s ecological significance and supporting efforts to bolster local conservation initiatives.

in reply to MicroWave

Great article, but I'm surprised it didn't end with them saying they planned to follow up with the indigenous people and use their knowledge to help fill in the gaps...

Yet another example of western science thinking we have to reinvent the wheel - the person they interviewed said that all these "new" species were already known to the locals. Obviously we just needed to ask.

So we've got a President, a billionaire, and now a closely allied nation that are all out of control loose cannons, who are all willing to ignore any law, moral code, or ethical detail, and to destroy any person or entity who stands in their way, and the entire world seems powerless to do anything meaningful about any of them.

Cool cool cool...

in reply to octopus_ink

Just a lesson this species still needs to learn about concentrating so much power in the hands of so few people.

US says it has 2,000 troops in Syria, not 900 as previously declared

After years of telling the public that the United States has about 900 troops in Syria, the Pentagon has revealed there are approximately 2,000 soldiers there — double the previous estimate.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Pentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder said the additional US forces have been in Syria since before the ouster of former President Bashar al-Assad this month, though he did not specify a timeframe.

“We have been briefing you regularly that there are approximately 900 US troops deployed to Syria. In light of the situation in Syria and the significant interest, we recently learned that those numbers were higher,” Ryder said.

Who the fuck is "we" in this statement? The Pentagon?!

Just a little oopsie where you misplace (at least) 1100 troops in a foreign country. Totally normal and not CIA related.

Internet disconnected and now Piped doesn't work.

I was turning on IPV6 in my router settings, and in order to do so, my router had to reboot, and without thinking, I went ahead. I then realised, my server is connected to said router, so after the router rebooted, I checked and saw that most of the docker containers were fine, except for the Piped container.

When I go to the Piped instance that's hosted on my domain, it just brings up a Cloudflare Code 522 Error (I use Cloudflare)I tried restarting the containers over and over again but no luck. Any advice? I will provide more information if needed.
