I hope we respond by putting tariffs on American pickups. Democratic nations need to cut the US out of the global economy entirely until they learn how to act right.

Despite all the external challenges, Kaleiki still feels "there's not much we can do there with the budget" and "the most important thing is the game has to be good." That's because, according to him, "Valve does a very good job of surfacing games that players like or that players are enjoying" and "the algorithm is almost impenetrable.""If you watch some indie dev videos, they'll often say we tried hacking the algorithm, we tried doing all these goofy things, and there's not much you can do," he said. "All you can really do is make a good game, which, in a lot of ways, is good news for us, but also this is really hard because there's no little hacks you can do to surface your game like you could 20 years ago. "
I mean, he's got a super valid take here, but also, like.... There's tons of pretty damn good games on Steam, a lot of them very kind of unknown and underrated for how fun they actually are.
Further, you're not just competing with current "good games" you're also competing with classic "good games.*
According to certain sources, there's over 100,000 games in the US Valve game store in 2025.
Over one hundred thousand games.
That's still a rough number of games to be up against, even if only a quarter of them are "good games."

I have been playing Victoria 3 for almost 300 hours in the past year. Now, i try this and that to help the experience stay fresh and not get bored of it too fast, but that is 300 hours of playtime that no other good game on steam can get. Meaning, it does not matter how good of a game your release today, this weekend, it's going to be Great Qing time and I'm gonna be puzzling over if i should build more administration or not.
As sad as it is, player time is as limited as player budget, and there is a wall sadly where the market just can't absorb more good games.

Would you share some of these unknown/underrated games? I'd be curious to see what you mean, because I personally agree with the article and I feel that the games that aren't more popular are generally there for a reason (not that they're bad games, just you know.. some lack of polish, an unpopular genre, too competitive of a genre, etc)
I can't remember the last time I played a game and I was like "how have I not heard of this game before?!"
I picked up The Thaumaturge based off of an Angry Centaur Gaming review, and for as much as I enjoyed that game, I basically never hear anyone else talk about it. They likely built the game on a modest and reasonable budget, but I'm still concerned that they didn't break even.
Diesel Legacy: The Brazen Age was one of the best games I played last year, but it's just about guaranteed that they did not make their money back, once again on a lean budget.
Cloak and Dasher is a game akin to N++ that my brother and I played at PAX East some years ago, and we were immediately impressed and bought early access copies. It probably hasn't even cracked 1000 copies sold and will likely never leave early access. (They should patch it up and finish it regardless, but what's there now is already great.)
Keep in mind that none of these games are $100M flops. They're great games with reasonable scope that are still struggling to survive. Mimimi closed down because they were just barely breaking even and struggled to find funding even with critical acclaim and a core audience that liked their games.

Why more young men in Germany are turning to the far-right
Summary
Support for Germany’s far-right AfD is surging among young men, driven by concerns over immigration, conservative values, and distrust of mainstream politics.
A Pew study found 26% of German men view AfD positively, compared to 11% of women.
Social media, particularly TikTok, has helped spread its message. Some young supporters reject accusations of extremism, while others openly embrace far-right views.
Analysts warn that if mainstream parties ease their opposition to the AfD, it could become Germany’s dominant right-wing party.

Because they’re Nazis.
But why do people become Nazis?
People are not born Nazis.
Understanding why people become Nazis helps prevent people from becoming Nazis, even if you think there's no hope for the fucks who've already dived into the ideology.

I mean, fair, but a lot of the "why" with these guys boils down to "The world acts like all men are terrible, sex-crazed jerks who are violent, angry, and unable to control their emotions while claiming they're actually stoic and that makes me feel bad about myself."
Then, their solution is to double down on all those things because they're upset about being unfairly accused.
Look, if your response to people assuming you're a shitty person is to just... become an even shittier person to prove it, I think it says there was something deeply wrong with you before you doubled down.
I've heard the same shit about men my whole life and not fucking once did it make me go "God damn, I should just be a pile of shit then!" No, every time it inspired me to self-reflect and try to change my behaviors for the better.
So I reiterate, if your response is to double down, something was wrong with you before the turn to Nazism.
Like I don't know why else talking about "rape culture" resulted in young men chanting "Your body, my choice!" at women other than being born and raised as a piece of shit.

So you're essentially blaming men for blaming men.

I see. It's women's fault that the men who control the media can't teach other men how to be men.
Finally, the conspiracy all comes together.
Men control women doing tiktoks? Even if a shady cabal of men sits at tiktok HQ algorithmically pushing ick content (why?), you need women to produce it in the first place.
Nah, that stuff is produced by women, for a female audience, it's empathy bait, you can tell by the comments. Young boys then catch it as a stray, "WTF is this what are these standards how can I live up to them".
Ah, I see. "Women doing tiktoks" control the men who control virtually all of the media which is why they can't teach other men how to be men.
It all makes sense when you put it that way.
It's you who's talking about "all media". I'm talking about one specific example "ick tiktoks", stuff I have to deal with in martial arts classes, because freshly-minted teens get confused as fuck about it.
Who are these men that are flooding tiktok with ick content? Making my job harder?
The person I was talking to before you butted in. Literally.
You apparently wished to change the subject without announcing you were doing so.
It's a semi-random feed. Tiktok throws things at you and if something sticks, they're showing more of it. Pretty much all know about the stuff, many dismiss it, for some it's self-image fentanyl: Both incredibly addictive and destructive: At their age they're looking for information on what girls "really want", and what they get is "anything you do is a possible reason to dump you and you'll never be able to predict what I consider icky the next second" instead of something even remotely sensible. They're seeing their prospects to, at some time, enter a long-term relationship with someone they love shatter, instincts denied, instinct reconfigures and re-affirms themself (because it always does) and now you have someone vulnerable to Tateist propaganda, "grab her by the pussy and make her your bitch". Because that kind of "solution" is way more easy than working through the whole shebang. Without guidance it's pretty much impossible, they're too young. They can't tell their drive to relate and their reproductive drive apart and thus can't see that the Tate way actually denies them one drive to assert the other, while they could have both. Heck they can barely control their limbs.
What I'm saying is that it would be very helpful if that content didn't exist. I could call Tate a loudly barking Chihuahua who got his "world champion" title in an amateur organisation and leave it at that instead of having to go into depth fucking psychology. I hope we can agree on that.
they are not born as people who will become more sexist if accused of sexism or shown sexism in broader society, inherently; they are damaged into creatures which react like that.
You conveniently defined away a possibility there, didn't you. There is preciously little understanding in fifth or sixth wave or whatever is it now feminist circles about how their rhetoric affects young guys, that there even needs to be a conversation about "all men" speaks volumes. Paint with a broad brush and you paint yourself as an adversary of people who, at a young age, approach the topic completely neutrally.
"Hi I'm new here" -- "You are the problem" -- "Fine, I'll go somewhere else". That kind of thing happens all the time and it's not something anyone gets conditioned into.

I think it’s largely about a lack of opportunity for, especially but not exclusively, blue collar workers^1^ and a perceived loss of status. There seems to be a lot of young men across the West and elsewhere who are struggling to build a career in the modern economy and being rejected by women (in part due to their anger) when, to them, it feels like just a generation or two ago, they would have been handed a middle class life and been the breadwinner for a family already.
Nevermind that a generation or two ago, that status came at the expense of others. To them, it feels like lost status. So, they’re easily manipulated by the far right saying, “It’s not you. It’s [insert scapegoat: women, immigrants, whatever]. We’ll give you a sense of purpose.”
^1^ I only say blue collar because of the shift in rich countries from manufacturing to services, whether high paid or low paid. But whole white collar professions have disappeared just due to computers.
People become Nazis when they feel lost, powerless, and their lives meaningless. They reach for it in a desperate attempt to be part of something important, powerful, and meaningful.
But it’s empty and nihilistic, so it doesn’t work out.
We as a society haven’t figured out how to deal with modernity. All our problems are of our own making. We’ve destroyed religion (the original provider of meaning and belonging) and left a void in its place. That’s all the desire for Nazism is: a desire to fill that void (and a scapegoat for why it exists in the first place).
Of course you and I can see that the scapegoat is wrong and totally absurd. But that’s not important to them. There’s no easier way to feel powerful than to topple a hated enemy.

Social media, particularly TikTok, has helped spread its message.
Lies are easier to spread than the truth, and often more easily accepted too. Social media is fucked because of the near total lack of moderation - or desire to enact such.
After all, the ultra-wealthy often have little objection to being the useful pets of fascists, so long as they get to keep slightly more of their money*.

Disagree. Social media is built to favor creating and then selling huge name influencers to your users, and because you cannot become a large influencer/streamer/w/e without essentially being uncritical about the world, or being critical in a way that swings completely to 1 side of the aisle. This is in itself a form of moderation that only ever allows some critical voices to succeed, but only if their critique furthers the divide among the working class.
Like always, the 1% keep parasitising the wealth of a country till the inhabitants stop living in comfort. When populists capitalise on this, the answer is... Tik tok makes young men racist, not poverty and uneducation... Anything to avoid wealth re-distribution. *slow clap
Hopefully some enlightenment will come and the eyes will turn to the real responsibility for this situation, and then the guillotines.

I'm not aware of a country that's swinging right where living standards are rising. They're all either stalled out or falling in spite of narrative and expectation. Sure, Germany isn't bad compared to some others, but plenty of Germans recognize that the standard of living they're used to is starting to diminish. Unfortunately, instead of recognizing the real causes here, that angst is being channeled into "yes, but what if we tried out fascism again?"
The thing that's wild to me as a USian is that we've had the fruits of reactionary conservatism (starting on the path with Reaganism) on full display since the oughts, and other countries seem to see our shambling fucking mess and go "well, yes, but the rich people told us it'll be different for us." No, it fucking won't.
Well, this being the BBC their take is NEVER (ever, ever) going to be that the empoverishment due to a social, political and economic structure than massively benefits the Owner class whilst empoverishing the rest and uses propaganda to distract the masses and to make sure any redistributive ideologies are un- or at least under-reported, is the one to blame for those most hit amongst the "plebes" are going to rebel and latch one to the only "non"-mainstream ideologies that do get reported about - the Far Right.
This is because in their own country and, to some level internationally, the BBC's function is to be a cog in exactly that propaganda machine.
The last thing you'll ever going to see is the news media who portrays "two sides coverage" (I.e. all subjects getting reduced to a dispute between the two main parties) as "fair" "journalism" covering any subject as a problem of how mainstream politics benefits the well-entrenced Owner class, especially the news media from a country were the Owner class is mainly made up of the same families as a century ago. At best, they'll cover the near-mainstream "blame outsiders" movements (such as the Far Right), never those pointing out how much of the blame rest on well off local elites

I don't know what a cash-drawer or ploughing has to do with this discussion. Honestly, that's when I resumed scrolling, and I'm sorry.
I think the point is not "this is all TikTok's fault", the point is things like TikTok makes it a lot easier to spread misinformation. People have shorter attention spans nowadays, and they prefer to spend their time consuming short form content such as the kind found on TikTok. The problem with this is that it takes a lot more effort to correct wrong information and educate people than it takes to spread misinformation. For example, it's much easier to clip something a politician says out of context and to make a 5 or 10 second clip for people to watch, than to convince people to watch a 5 minute interview or read an article for context.
And even though I don't use TikTok, I still kind of insert my self in here; I don't have the mental fortitude or patience to read every single article I come across, so I often read diagonally, check the summary, or (more rarely) just stick with the title.

I wonder why it always seems to be men that are so helpless at forming their own opinions on things that they fall in line for social media grifters (while probably calling themselves 'alphas'). I mean, 11% of women isn't a small amount either but 26% of men is more than double that and just over a quarter of the total amount.
Not even trying to be funny here but it's looking more and more like the stereotypes of women being emotional and irrational and men being all level headed and wise and shit are completely fucking backwards. It seems to men that need to be babied and pampered and taken care of it told what to do. And be told what special little boys they are every 5 minutes or else they'll punch a wall and vote for nazis. While women in general are doing a hell of a lot better at keeping their heads in the face of endless social media propaganda.
Clearly society has been doing something wrong as far as raising men goes.
He was an imminent threat to comfortable and familiar ways of life of the rich. Had he not been a threat to them and their interests, we would not have gone to war with him.
Likewise anyone else on the current world stage who is obnoxious, outrageous, egregious or other adjectives of that ilk.
Sure, he was also a threat to the comfort and happiness of people other than the rich, and hey, the fact that fascism is legitimately terrible is an excellent propaganda point, but that only made it easier to recruit those less well-off to go fight the battles of the rich.
And then there's that a significant part of the reason people outside of Germany hated him is because he was foreign. Nothing more, nothing less. Pick any country, and if he'd been one of their own instead, the haters would have liked him just fine and would have been "Roman saluting" just like the Germans did.
(Yes, I know he was an Austrian accepted by Germans. Call that the exception that proves the rule. Countries further away couldn't care less. He was still foreign to them.)
Funny that this somehow was obvious for me since childhood. One of the perks of being autistic is that reading the same mainstream narrative texts you understand them differently.
The world loves those enforcing rules, because they have to be strong for that, and the world loves those breaking rules, because if today they are making a challenge, tomorrow they might become even stronger. Humans follow strength. So a new challenger of existing order is loved, a yesterday's challenger who is still not a triumphant is hated.
Also the world wants to use those with integrity, but hang out with those without integrity. The former are reliable, and with the latter you can make any deal.
No conclusion other than a dagger is good for the one holding it and evil for the one lacking it when needed.
The world loves those enforcing rules, because they have to be strong for that, and the world loves those breaking rules, because if today they are making a challenge, tomorrow they might become even stronger. Humans follow strength. So a new challenger of existing order is loved, a yesterday’s challenger who is still not a triumphant is hated.
In my experience, a good microcosm example of that is sports; specifically MMA. Just have to pay attention to how quickly the narrative and majority opinion changes based on who has most recently won their fights. You also often see subconscious racism (or at least I like to think it's subconscious) affect people's opinions of fighters.
I was thinking about this the other day, and came to some conclusions. This is a copy-paste of a comment I made in another thread:
I don’t know much about the history of anti-Semitism in Europe (so anyone feel free to correct me or add more info), but what I’ve been thinking is that the cause/origin of anti-Semitism is no different from the anti-immigrant panic from today. They both come down to people from a “foreign” or at least different culture coming into a society and getting jobs or opening business. It just so happens that now those foreign people are more diverse, whereas before (centuries ago in Europe) they were mostly Jewish.
This tells me we have learned nothing from our past except for the most surface level details. We learned that anti-Semitism is bad and beat people over the head with it, but we never properly addressed the roots of it, and so now the same thing is repeating but for different groups of people. It’s the same sort of thing as when it is said that “people nowadays are more open minded”, when the reality is simply that they were taught to be okay (or not) with certain things; but the bigoted though process has not really gone away.
The Jew hate originally stemmed from the fact that they could loan money and charge interest, which Christians found to be a sin (usury). Well, somebody has to handle banking or the economy crashes. Made them perfect scapegoats.
"I must be suffering because the Jews stole my money!"
Then it gets worse. Jews had strict rules about cleanliness, you can find many of them in the Bible. Guess who did and didn't get hit with plague rats. Guess who got the blame.
I'm gonna go with
- Angry without a culprit
- Reduced critical thought
Both of those.
I want to add a third thing to this list:
- Feeling left behind by mainstream political parties.
The parties in power surely pay lip service to the issues that concern the young but very rarely do they actually do anything about it.
I think there are obviously a lot of reasons this is happening, we all know it’s not so simple a thing to explain.
But I think it can mostly just be boiled down to general discontent—there is a feeling all over the world that is vague and seemingly in everyone. It’s disenfranchisement. It’s a system that doesn’t prioritize us or even consider us. We serve the system, and the exploitation for the benefit of the global system has become so acute that it’s hitting everyone.
But people just cannot conceive of big problems like this. It always has to be something specific, so their more personal fears and biases are being exploited by the most advanced conditioning and manipulation system ever created.
We are mico-conditioned. We are exploited in new and exciting and previously unthinkable ways. We are so minutely controlled that we aren’t even in control of our own feelings most of the time. We have our moods changed for companies to profit or to weaken us to whatever it is their product “fixes.”
We can dig down into so much minutiae about the different things, but that’s like dividing Infinity over and over and over ad Infinitum. But we need to stop subdividing and sub-subdividing because that only serves to divide us—which is exactly the tactic used to exploit our vague anger. We need to instead zoom way out and see that this system is taking us down with the world it’s destroying. We all feel it, we all feel the system breaking down. But that uneasiness is given a face and a name in immigrants, or whatever is helpful.
You aren’t being funny here.
Good thing I specifically said I wasn't trying to be funny then. I suppose you're right though. There's absolutely nothing to be learnt from 11% of women versus 26% of men supporting nazis. It's a mystery. Martian shit.
It also helps nothing and no one to "both sides" this conversation every time it starts. Astrology and homeopathy doesn't even begin to fucking compare with nazism. Also, why do you call out astrology but not christianity? One is a dumb little thing involving sky magic that is mostly harmless and the other is also a dumb thing involving sky magic but the followers of that dumb thing are actually very dangerous and harmful to a lot of people that have to grow up with them. Haven't met too many female priests in my life either.
Fascism relies on traditional gender roles and that has less appeal to women who would lose rights and power compared to men who would theoretically gain power. It’s less “there’s something wrong with the men” and more that fascism itself is designed to appeal to men.
Oh, is it? So what you're telling me is that fascism appeals to men more than women because men don't give as much of a shit about other people's rights? Fascinating. Totally means there's nothing wrong with men that needs addressing or changing. Sure.
Edit: in fact this whole fucking conversation is stupid considering that the stats are there at the top of the post for all to see. There is clearly a fucking problem. And the way to fix that problem is to actually address it instead of comparing it to astrology and calling it a day.
Edit 2: the moderators here in this community are actually fucking pathetic. Actually cannot see a good reason they removed my most recent comment too now. And I'm realising that this place is actually kinda worse than Reddit in this regard because it even removes the comment from your own profile. And these fucking moderators don't notify you or give you an actual concrete reason with whichever word or phrase broke the fucking rules. Dodgy as fuck. They're actually just out to control the conversation.
Which is very Reddit of them. It's easy to forget that a lot of people here are ex Reddit moderators that pissed the users there off so much that no one was willing to join them in solidarity with the API debacle. Guess I've found my first Lemmy community to block.

Can we please talk about how there is no active real left wing in any country?
Like sure the right wins when there is no real opposition.
I keep feeling like I've failed miserably as a person for not doing more. And I have no idea what should I be doing.
And I have no idea what should I be doing.
Imo:
1. Finding other people who feel the same way
2. Organizing/structuring your common discussion and research. I feel like I've seen 100 comment sections like this one where people see the problem, the commenters then speculate about the causes/solutions, and then the convo fizzles out without a deeper conclusion being reached. Every day under a new post, again and again. There is clearly manpower and a will to do something, it is just IMHO suffering from structurelesness. The conversation needs to be had once and thoroughly, in some central location that everyone can then be referred to. This way, people can specialize their research efforts, instead of everybody doing superficial research for themselves in isolation.
One centralized discussion I have seen is about the democratic side of the problem and it's over at plurality.net/ (it is a crowd sourced work co-written using github). I think the political/economic side of the debate would benefit from piggybacking off of an existing centralized platform devoted to the cause, like generalstrikeus.com/ or some trade union.
Explain to me why insulting people who believe in Christianity is bad but insulting people who believe in astrology is ok. I'm interested to hear why you think Christians deserve more respect for their dogmatic beliefs than other people who believe silly things but mostly keep it to themselves and don't harm anyone else.
Also, fuck off, I am in fact going to think there is something wrong with men if nazism is an attractive 'product' for them to 'buy' and they have zero regard for any human rights but their own. I am going to think there's something wrong with anyone that buys into nazism but the very clear fact is that men are buying into it more.
I just want to also add, I am AMAB. I've lived the majority of my life as a man amongst other men. I've even had to fucking live with other men in boarding school. So I've also got my own lived experience of toxic masculinity.
The whole fact that nazism is such a good and guilt free product for a lot of men, is because of that fucking toxic masculinity. Because it appeals to people who have been raised to believe that aggression and power plays are more important than empathy and cooperation. Which brings me back to my first post which was removed. Clearly society is doing something wrong with how we're raising men.
Fucking Hans, you gullible bitch, showing your face around here again... You think you're gonna be a superman?
They kind of are though. There's a reason the word Sophomore exists and is used to describe students multiple times in their education career.

Probably not. But individuals on TikTok are definitely denying themselves an opportunity to get smarter.
To be honest, a large percentage of people are intellectually very lazy (use emotion to decide, dont' seek understanding but entertainment) and prone to being manipulated.
A large percentage of people hunger for a sense of belonging and community (which extreme nationalism and a tribal attitude can offer to some degree).
In the wasteland of corporate-controlled algorithmically steered social media (prime examples: TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube)... people who don't have an analytical mindset will get themselves shut in a bubble, and subsequently tricked and conned in various ways.
Brick and mortar social problems like a reduced chance of earning a good living by selling one's labour - those pile on top of that. :(
A desperate belief that they are impoverished because they need to compete with an ethnic out group and a belief that the out group is taking their shit, murdering them, and stealing/raping their women.
Even though its largely due to capitalism and technologically induced paranoia & loneliness.
Because capitalism, as a system, is a machine that in the "best" of cases enables fascism, and in the worst it just outrights converts into fascism.
For decades, although nowadays is even more pronounced, young people have been deprived of a decent future in all senses; educational, social, economic, environmentally... At the same time that they were being bombarded, figuratively and literally, with fake news, guilt riddled articles, and a myriad of macho values that they are still supposed to uphold.
These young men worldwide are a byproduct of capitalism and patriarchy, and unless we collectively can do something, they will also become the first disposable pawns in the wars to come.
P.S: Sorry for the dark post, sometimes is difficult to see the brighter side of things.

Astrology and homeopathy doesn’t even begin to fucking compare with nazism
sooooo...ummmm...here's the craziest thing; hold on, you're not gonna believe this:
the nazis were SUPER into astrology, homeopathy, and similar shit!
nazi occultism is essential to nazi ideology, so not only are these concepts intimately intertwined, they form one of the pillars on which nazi iedology is built: "alternate science"
"alterantive science", "aryan science", or whatever else it's called (it doesn't actually matter, all of it is the exact same shit: NOT science), is an important part of fascist power structures in that it serves as a vehicle to legitimize the crazy racist and supremacist shit they want to believe.
phrenology, homeopathy, eugenics, and all the rest of the dogmatic bullshit played a major role in the 3rd reich by delegitimize the "jewish science".
sound familiar? it should!
the modern equivalent is "woke science", which, you know, is just regular science...
so, no, nazi ideology doesn't "compare" to astrology and homeopathy: those are essential parts of nazism and the associated anti-intellectualism!
(ExtraHistory has a recent video series on the topic of nazi occultism; it's on youtube and nebula, if you're interested to learn more!)
Also, why do you call out astrology but not christianity?
not sure how it would play out nowadays, especially in the U.S., but in the 3rd reich the church was a significant source of resistance against nazi rule.
the reasons for that include the church having a vested interest in keeping some control over the population and it's own propaganda, but the vast majority of resistance came from individual clergy members refusing to bow to the cruelty of the nazis, and defending their communities.
these priests resisted both directly and indirectly, rallied rebels, organized smuggling operations, provided meeting places, sheltered refugees, sabotaged, and generally made the jobs of the nazi oppressors that much harder.
many, MANY clergy members were murdered by the nazis for their resistance, and quite a few officially received martyrdom status, and a few are regarded as national heroes for their efforts!
so i'm an atheist, vehemently against the church and think that:
* it's an institution of power and control over the poorly educated to keep them nice and distracted from the class struggle
* think the tax exempt status of churches, with little to no oversight on how that tax-free income is spent, is bullshit
* the priesthood serves as a shield for masses of sexual predators
* the indoctrination of young and vulnerable minds that haven't had a chance to develop countermeasures to such influence is morally abhorrent
* the church has, and in some cases continues to, committed heinous crimes against humanity
...but you chose the one period in history that actually makes it kinda clear what benefits the church does provide.
like i said, i'm not a fan, and if it wasn't the church i'm fairly confident others would have stepped up and taken on similar roles of resistance, as many indeed did at the time, and yet this is one of the few instances in which the members of the clergy were quite clearly on the right side of history for once...possibly the only time.
sooooo...yeah...unlucky example in this (very specific) context...
there's a lot fascinating history around these two topics, highly recommend checking it out! ;)

Trump doubles down on annexation threat, says Canada would be ‘cherished state’
Summary
Donald Trump reiterated his claim that Canada would be better as the U.S.’s 51st state, citing trade imbalances and lower taxes.
He also announced new 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, including from Canada, despite a recent 30-day reprieve.
Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has not formally responded, but a government source said they await official confirmation.
Trump criticized Canada’s defense spending and border security, despite recent Canadian commitments.
Canada previously retaliated against similar tariffs in 2018 before a 2019 trade deal resolved the dispute.
Trump says his desire to make Canada the 51st state is a real thing
U.S. President Donald Trump once again says that he wants to see Canada become a state due to the unsubstantiated claim that the States is “paying $200 billion a year” to its northern neighbour. The Canadian Press (CTVNews)
I know a bunch of Canadians who are still furious about that time an American dropped a fucking bomb on Canadian forces and killed a bunch of us and then walked away with effectively no repurcussions.
I'm one of those Canadians.
And America would lose. Violently. They may successfully annex the country but they would never win.
If America invades Canada then the only thing that has happened is guaranteed your own demise. You have a border with us that isn't defensible and we look exactly like you. We sound exactly like you. We are taught the same things as you are and because of your loud as shit TV, we're plugged into the same pop culture. We can pass every single test to come off as an American.
America invades Canada and guerilla warfare becomes instaneous. You would have to literally kill every single Canadian who has a problem with the invasion because otherwise the extreme Anti-American hatred will only grow and foster until the United States is constantly being bombarded by "domestic terrorists" from a nation that never wanted to be a part of your shitheap in the first place.
People keep thinking about war with drones and tanks and soldiers. If you're going to another country and trying to pound them into submission like the Americans or Russians? Sure. But it is a very different thing entirely when a fishing vessel packed with fertilizer detonates inside of a port or harbor or when multiple explosives are set off devastating your insanely aging and woefully unprotected bridges and railways. Or those pipelines that go on forever with massive areas of nothing and no one in between. Cause an ecological spill you can't recover from. Maybe even the power grid that your states have idiotically decided to seperate? We could cripple Texas with a bunch of Albertans. Or we could just go through your farming states spreading weeds everywhere. Start planting Kudzu everywhere across the US. Start burning forests that prevent your dustbowl from reoccuring. You are so fucking easy to destroy.
You guys protect all the wrong things and you do not need to be a terrorist to realize how insanely inadequate the protections would be from attacks within.
Well… there you go Canada. You’ll be cherished. You’ve no reason not to now. So… what’s the holdup?
(Obligatory /s)
Theres a reason why he isn't making the same threats against Mexico.
There's a reason he wants to resettle Palestinians before redeveloping Gaza.
One thing I despise about the US (gun violence and healthcare inequitability aside) is how it measures the value of everything in money.
It's culture is a commodification machine. Nothing can just be beautiful for the sake of being beautiful, it has to be made into a side hustle somehow.
Most Americans are married to their jobs and have little work life balance relative to Canadians and Europeans.
There is a remarkable amount of mental gymnastics done by people trying to gaslight themselves into thinking this is what they want, even though most would be happier and healthier with more time off.

And are they just going to start shooting normal people at random? Canadians look exactly and sound exactly like America. The US Military is really good at wrecking a country but who cares when we can cross a border you can't defend, mingle perfectly and start guerilla attacks against major infrastructure?
This war is not just tanks vs planes and ships vs submarines. This would end violently for America.
Most of the people I'm around are not rich by any means, but they are not living paycheck to paycheck. Rising cost of living is worrying, but manageable. They can afford to pay even the littlest bit of attention or concern, but they don't. Because then they would have to admit that things are collapsing around them week by week, and that's too frightening for them.
Frankly I'm tired of justifying the behavior of the average American with infantilizations like we are some lower form of life without sapience. At some point we have to own up to it, even if it's painful, even if all we have is ignorance, cowardice, and apathy.
Yup, already had the "flee or stand and die" convo with my partner a few weeks ago. I am firmly willing to risk death to defend the progress we've made as a Province and Nation. We aren't perfect and are early in the process but we're trying to recon with our history of colonial genocide and embrace a truer multiculturalism which the US refuses to even acknowledge. We have made commitments to the health and well-being of all citizens, not just the productive bodies which fuel the markets. It's incomplete but aspirational and walking it back would be a disgrace.
The American democracy is an outdated shambles that has fallen into ruin and I will not be bound by it by choice. There is no freedom or opportunity the USA can offer us. Only more oppression on rights we already have enshrined.
Yeah I realized that as I was typing it. Our population grew so damn fast. Granted, three million or so of those don't have citizenship or permanent residency, and are a rotation of temporary students or workers. A lot are expected to leave (a lot are also expected to becomes PRs).
3/4 people resisting is probably a pipe dream anyway, so 30 million dissidents from Canada alone isn't likely in a worst case Ontario.
So you are saying (assuming every US resident will go along with this) that we just have to take out about 10 American's each?
I like those odds.
Reduced quality of life? Greater danger of being shot in a school? Shorter life expectancy? Lower quality food? And imperial president instead of a democratic one?
I'm not seeing the upsides for Canada.
Multiple fronts I'd imagine.
I'd easily imagine Mexico declaring and starting to fuck shit up at the southern border.
Depending on when it starts, potentially embargoes from Europe. (Right now I think they're still too skittish, but if Trump invades after he's spent another year or so destroying international relations, I don't doubt Europe would slap embargoes on him. At some point, those countries that host American bases would tell them to fuck off back home which in the short term would be bad for Canada since it would be reinforcing the American military, but in the long term destroying America's global reach.
I'd accept casualties if it meant taking care of American imperialism long-term.
Honestly, Canada is a terrible target from a guerrilla warfare perspective. We have vast areas of emptiness that locals are familiar with but are dangerous if you don't know how to survive there, many pocket communities that could easily hide insurgents and weaponry, lots of farming, which means lots of nitrates, a populace that can easily disappear into the American general population, and enough of an identity to not want to be absorbed by a different culture.
I don't think we could stop America from invading and occupying, but we could make Vietnam look like a walk in the park. So, who's up for another couple decades of occupation?
If they had any brains, they'd create a salient by using the fifth column traitors in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Very little would hold them back in Maple MAGA country. They'd have both provinces in short order and then work on defending them.
A bit like Hitler making a beeline for the Russian oil fields before he got distracted with taking Stalingrad because of "symbolism" or some shit.
I'm not sure any US strategist is willing to face the fallout of open war involving all of Europe. But then again, when has Trump ever cared about his advisors
We are truly living in interesting times
Everyone assumes every country's overton window is aligned with the US.
Canada is no leftist paradise, but their overton window is far more left than the US.
Bernie would a Canadian centrist, or maybe a left leaning politician, for example.
Most of the people I’m around are not rich by any means, but they are not living paycheck to paycheck.
Most Americans are a single paycheck away from being destitute... Like, the average savings for a person in this country is 2K. That's not even a single paycheck of mine, and hell, I even find it hard to make and plans past 8 or 9 months out.
The US army is much larger and better equipped than the Canadian army.
What % of the US army would be happy to obey an order to invade Canada. At what level if seniority? What justification could be given to sure up the troops?
The same could be asked about the Vietnam invasion, the First Gulf War, Iraq invasion, Afghanistan invasion... From my perspective none of these had any convincing reason to give to the people, still Vietnam lasted for almost two decades. The occupation of Afghanistan also lasted two decades and there is still US troops in Iraq.
If push comes to shove some bullshit reasons will be made up and i don't trust the US executive to not obey. They are also letting some mid twenties kid fuck up the treasury system to hide payments being made or not made. And this is directly risking their own salaries.
I unapologetically woke up this morning hoping to read that someone took a successful shot at him during the Superbowl.
Put me on whatever list you wish.
Honestly? I think just not supporting a war (trade or otherwise) with your long time ally will go quite a way. War in a far away land is one thing, war with your neighbour is another thing all together. As long as americans don't just shrug and pretend everything is normal this whole idea will go no where.
On the other hand if it does go in the most stupid direction, prepare for blackouts and attacks on any and all infrastructure. This is not a threat but just a reasonable expectation of a nations activity when in this situation.
Then we take Mich-i-gaaaan
Stop giving this foolishness air.
Make preparations on the side. But Stop giving it public attention.
also understand that Canada would never be a state. It would be a generation or two of Forceful and violent assimilation before any region was given "statehood". For everyone else, it's poverty, military occupation, and slavery. Which would mean Insurgency and War.
Any Canadian advocating for this is either terminally online and uneducated, living life off article title opinions. Or they are functionally a traitor/quisling/5th columnist and a threat to their neighbors, and should kept an eye of. And if things really did go "there". they'd be the ones taken out first by resistance.
I'm sure he's enjoying saying that fucking 51st state line over and over like an asshole spraying a cat with water for his own amusement.
That said, I don't think he realizes how much people in Canada are pissed and united right now.
Getting in would be a piece of cake, yes. Holding it would be so increadibly hard though.
Over 80% are against annexation. How much police officers/soldiers would be needed to keep the peace? Socially it would be a nightmare to integrate. Canada would probably retaliate with sabotage and guerilla tactics to shut down key infrastructures.
US government would have to deal with a good portion of its own population not to mention NATO and the commonwealth members states. They could support Canada militarily, but even if they don't there would be strong pressure and irreversible diplomatic and economic consequences. What if China and/or Russia use this as an opportunity to weaken USA while it's busy hitting its own allies?
I just don't see it happening and being profitable in any shape or form. It would be a useless costly mess and needless bloodshed.
"being angry" is like "thoughts and prayers"... it really means nothing.
Only a minuscule part of Americans are actually to motivate them to do anything about it... half of those are not even doing anything useful...
You seem to be under the impression that I’m defending the idea of the US invading Canada.
No? I just missed a step in my text a bit. My point was that while the US military is strong and could outright invade Canada with tanks and planes and guns... that isn't how the war would actually be fought. It would instantly turn to guerilla warfare as normal citizens started weaponizing themselves, crossing into the United States, and being able to carry out attacks on American infrastructure while looking and sounding the same as Americans.
Canada can't prepare a ton more than it already has but America can't prepare at all. The infrastructure in America is way too vulnerable and any war with Canada would mean a destruction of American infrastructure carried out by people wearing not uniforms but a smile.
Struggling to get PI OS working on a 3B
Got a couple rpi 3Bs I'd like to use headless.
Downloaded 32bit pi os lite, flashed it to an sd card, powered on and did the initial setup (select keyboard layout, set first user+pass).
As soon as I'm dropped into a shell, I run 'sudo apt update' then 'sudo apt upgrade -y'.
Once these finish, I type 'sudo reboot'; the pi reboots, shows the rainbow splash, about a dozen lines of kernal boot messages then the video output dies and after a couple seconds the act light stops flashing too. Disconnecting power and powering it again does the same thing.
I don't think it's hardware failure as I get the same results with both 3Bs and with a 4B.
I don't know what to do from here.
I've spent the last 6 hours retrying this with both the 32 and 64 bit versions of pi os light. I can't get past the initial update/upgrade.
Anyone got any ideas? Anyone got a spare sd card, a pi 3B, and some free time to see if I'm just stupid somehow?
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.
could you be able to self host on a raspberry pi
My partner just got me to "fix" her chromebook
I built her a desktop in 2019, has always had Linux on it.
She has had a chromebook for a couple of years, but this weekend she finally got annoyed enough to ask me to fix it, so that she could have all her applications work correctly.
It is an Asus CX5400; I had to unplug the battery to over write the firmware to allow me to install any OS I wanted. Then had to fix grub manually.
It took around 4 hours, a lot of that was opening the case without breaking anything.
I saw illegality and complicity with war crimes. That’s why I quit the UK Foreign Office
cross-posted from: lemm.ee/post/55092743
In August 2024, I resigned over the UK government’s refusal to halt arms sales to Israel amid the bombardment of Gaza. This decision followed over a year of internal lobbying and whistleblowing. My resignation made headlines, and weeks later, the new Labour government announced it would finally suspend arms sales to Israel. While this was welcome, it came far too late. Israel has continued to commit atrocities in Gaza as the UK stands by, unwilling to act.

Homelab upgrade - "Modern" alternatives to NFS, SSHFS?
Hi all!
I will soon acquire a pretty beefy unit compared to my current setup (3 node server with each 16C, 512G RAM and 32T Storage).
Currently I run TrueNAS and Proxmox on bare metal and most of my storage is made available to apps via SSHFS or NFS.
I recently started looking for "modern" distributed filesystems and found some interesting S3-like/compatible projects.
To name a few:
- MinIO
- SeaweedFS
- Garage
- GlusterFS
I like the idea of abstracting the filesystem to allow me to move data around, play with redundancy and balancing, etc.
My most important services are:
- Plex (Media management/sharing)
- Stash (Like Plex 🙃)
- Nextcloud
- Caddy with Adguard Home and Unbound DNS
- Most of the Arr suite
- Git, Wiki, File/Link sharing services
As you can see, a lot of download/streaming/torrenting of files accross services. Smaller services are on a Docker VM on Proxmox.
Currently the setup is messy due to the organic evolution of my setup, but since I will upgrade on brand new metal, I was looking for suggestions on the pillars.
So far, I am considering installing a Proxmox cluster with the 3 nodes and host VMs for the heavy stuff and a Docker VM.
How do you see the file storage portion? Should I try a full/partial plunge info S3-compatible object storage? What architecture/tech would be interesting to experiment with?
Or should I stick with tried-and-true, boring solutions like NFS Shares?
Thank you for your suggestions!

US planning $8 bn Israel arms sale as military support continues
The weapons sale proposal includes small-diameter bombs, warheads, attack helicopters as well as artillery shells and fighter jets. The administration of President Joe Biden has notified Congress of a proposed $8 billion arms sale to Israel, a US official said on Friday, with Washington maintaining support for its ally whose war in Gaza has killed more than 45,000.
Protesters have for months demanded an arms embargo against Israel, but US policy has largely remained unchanged. In August, the United States approved the sale of $20 billion in fighter jets and other military equipment to Israel.
Facing international criticism, Washington has stood by Israel during its assault on Gaza that has displaced nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million population, caused a hunger crisis and led to genocide accusations by several experts, the UN, and world leaders.

they might catch a breath thanks to how good this year’s lineup is
The lineup Microsoft's higher ups and/or shareholders make them release on PlayStation and Switch 2 as well because the takeover of ABK sunk too much money and Xbox alone cannot recuperate it. The games that don't get released on Sony and Nintendo consoles usually work better on PC, even though they add artificial and ridiculous raytracing demands in Indiana Jones and Doom Dark Ages (the PS5 are less demanding versions, so that alternative exists).
There is less reason than ever to get an Xbox console.
