trump puts 25% tariffs on Aussie steel and aluminium

I hope we respond by putting tariffs on American pickups. Democratic nations need to cut the US out of the global economy entirely until they learn how to act right.

Apologies if there's any weirdness in this post, it's my first one.

in reply to TheCriticalMember

I remember reading that the government was hoping that because we run a trade deficit with the yanks they wouldn't do this. Look forward to that just being the assumption and the government having done 0 planning.
in reply to spiffmeister

Didn't we just hand over $800,000,000 for those used submarines we bought on gumtree? I'm sure the yanks are good for it, they said they were our mates, right?

Can you imagine what Clement Atlee would think of these fucking people?

ex-WoW vet

He isn't a WoW vet anymore? How in the time-travel-bullshit did he manage that?!

in reply to Rekhyt

Their point is that it's redundant. You could say ex-WoW developer, you could say WoW vet, but you don't need both.
in reply to BreadstickNinja

Wouldn't "WoW vet" imply they have been and are currently working on WoW? Or does "vet" specifically imply no longer active?
in reply to CaptnNMorgan

I would consider vet to mean that they completed their tenure there, similar to how a soldier becomes a veteran after their service ends.

...prepping his new extraction RPG for early access, but he's not too worried about its launch because he reckons Steam's algorithm is "impenetrable," and as long as the game is good it'll get in front of the right people.

"...extraction RPG..."

Oh no. Oh no.

Why more young men in Germany are turning to the far-right

Summary

Support for Germany’s far-right AfD is surging among young men, driven by concerns over immigration, conservative values, and distrust of mainstream politics.

A Pew study found 26% of German men view AfD positively, compared to 11% of women.

Social media, particularly TikTok, has helped spread its message. Some young supporters reject accusations of extremism, while others openly embrace far-right views.

Analysts warn that if mainstream parties ease their opposition to the AfD, it could become Germany’s dominant right-wing party.

The poor are getting poorer, the rich are getting richer. Somehow, the rich have convinced some of the poor, that the reason they're getting poorer is because of the other poors (who are also getting poorer).

I have to agree with the sentiment expressed by the social media posts shown in the article. If your country's electricity infrastructure is so fragile that a monkey could take it offline then it's probably time to take a hard look at investing in improving its resilience.

Trump doubles down on annexation threat, says Canada would be ‘cherished state’

Summary

Donald Trump reiterated his claim that Canada would be better as the U.S.’s 51st state, citing trade imbalances and lower taxes.

He also announced new 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, including from Canada, despite a recent 30-day reprieve.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has not formally responded, but a government source said they await official confirmation.

Trump criticized Canada’s defense spending and border security, despite recent Canadian commitments.

Canada previously retaliated against similar tariffs in 2018 before a 2019 trade deal resolved the dispute.

Struggling to get PI OS working on a 3B

Got a couple rpi 3Bs I'd like to use headless.

Downloaded 32bit pi os lite, flashed it to an sd card, powered on and did the initial setup (select keyboard layout, set first user+pass).

As soon as I'm dropped into a shell, I run 'sudo apt update' then 'sudo apt upgrade -y'.

Once these finish, I type 'sudo reboot'; the pi reboots, shows the rainbow splash, about a dozen lines of kernal boot messages then the video output dies and after a couple seconds the act light stops flashing too. Disconnecting power and powering it again does the same thing.

I don't think it's hardware failure as I get the same results with both 3Bs and with a 4B.

I don't know what to do from here.

I've spent the last 6 hours retrying this with both the 32 and 64 bit versions of pi os light. I can't get past the initial update/upgrade.

Anyone got any ideas? Anyone got a spare sd card, a pi 3B, and some free time to see if I'm just stupid somehow?
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

could you be able to self host on a raspberry pi

Would you be able to host instances for stuff like mastodon and peertube on a raspberry pi more specifically the raspberry pi 5

My partner just got me to "fix" her chromebook

I built her a desktop in 2019, has always had Linux on it.

She has had a chromebook for a couple of years, but this weekend she finally got annoyed enough to ask me to fix it, so that she could have all her applications work correctly.

It is an Asus CX5400; I had to unplug the battery to over write the firmware to allow me to install any OS I wanted. Then had to fix grub manually.

It took around 4 hours, a lot of that was opening the case without breaking anything.

I followed the guide on this site

In August 2024, I resigned over the UK government’s refusal to halt arms sales to Israel amid the bombardment of Gaza. This decision followed over a year of internal lobbying and whistleblowing. My resignation made headlines, and weeks later, the new Labour government announced it would finally suspend arms sales to Israel. While this was welcome, it came far too late. Israel has continued to commit atrocities in Gaza as the UK stands by, unwilling to act.

Is there an easier way forward for rust in linux?

Every week or so there seems to be drama about some old dude shouting about how rust in the Linux kernel is bad. Given all the open hostility, is there easier way for R4L to continue their work?

US planning $8 bn Israel arms sale as military support continues

The weapons sale proposal includes small-diameter bombs, warheads, attack helicopters as well as artillery shells and fighter jets.

The administration of President Joe Biden has notified Congress of a proposed $8 billion arms sale to Israel, a US official said on Friday, with Washington maintaining support for its ally whose war in Gaza has killed more than 45,000.

Protesters have for months demanded an arms embargo against Israel, but US policy has largely remained unchanged. In August, the United States approved the sale of $20 billion in fighter jets and other military equipment to Israel.

Facing international criticism, Washington has stood by Israel during its assault on Gaza that has displaced nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million population, caused a hunger crisis and led to genocide accusations by several experts, the UN, and world leaders.

in reply to MisterD

They did though. Gaza was turned to rubble and the people were only allowed back to once trump secured the presidency. Biden gets his wish without being the last nail in the coffin. There is nothing defendable about Biden’s actions in Gaza and it was one of many reasons for this trump presidency

I’d like an X but also haven’t really seen much to push me to upgrade from the One X I currently have. The only thing I haven’t been able to play is Flight Simulator and I’d kind of rather be on PC for that. It’s probably cheaper to get the console than build a PC, but my wife got me a Quest 2 a couple years ago and VR seems like it would be pretty fun in Flight Simulator.
in reply to jqubed

As someone who went from an Xbox One X to a Series X, I can say the load screens are noticeably faster now. I only have so much time to spend gaming these days and I'm happy with the upgrade.
in reply to jqubed

Same. GTA VI is the only thing I’m really waiting for, but I may as well wait for the next console generation to play it at this point.
in reply to woelkchen

I don’t understand the naming convention. It’s not clear to me which is supposed to be the new console, as someone who is not thoroughly informed on the matter, and I think that is a marketing mistake.
in reply to henfredemars

It started because they would be on the Xbox 2 when PlayStation was on the PlayStation 3 and they didn't want to seem lesser so they started making up stupid bullshit for every console
in reply to henfredemars

It's so dumb. I haven't bothered with Xbox since the 360, but anything afterwards is confusing to me.
in reply to Altima NEO

They should have just gone from Xbox 2 to Xbox 4 to keep up. Or start making after the year of release or something. Or even following anything sequential (like letters of the alphabet with what Android used to do). Anything that made logical sense.
in reply to cRazi_man

I think everyone was expecting Xbox 720, which would have been fine.
in reply to henfredemars

100%, someone who used to sell the units the amount of confusion we would get from Grandma's coming in wanting to buy their grandkids a new console and having both the One X and the Series X out was tough to explain. It was always the same puzzled look of "who the hell greenlit that naming choice"
