I'd think this would be expected in winter, no? It has been pretty cold.

It's not supposed to get drained this low, and the problem is that prices keep climbing so refilling will cost more than last year.

UK Orders Apple To Break Encryption Worldwide While World Is Distracted

in reply to schnurrito

I think it's great that the UK stepped on their dick and this made big news in the tech world. I don't know if it got any play in more mainstream news, but it highlighted the dangers of over-regulation.

I'm typically pro-regulation, btw. I'm not a libertarian fuck-nut. Privacy is also cool, is what I'm saying.

China reaffirms support for Palestinian state after Donald Trump’s Gaza comments

This is rich from someone who was just a few days ago excited that Trump had taken over. Claiming that things were better in Palestine because Trump was president. You credited him with the ceasefire, food and aid in the streets, and crowing about how smart you are to have not voted for Harris.

PlayStation Network outage leads to rush of complaints from gamers

The PlayStation Network (PSN) is down, depriving online gamers around the world from accessing weekend events.

The outage began in the UK at about midnight on Friday.

About 71,000 gamers reported the outage to PlayStation’s website. Many users can no longer access online gaming lobbies, the PlayStation Store or their online accounts.

The PSN runs a model that costs £13.49 a month, £39.99 for three months or £119.99 for 12 months for its premium subscription. Many gamers have pointed to these costs when complaining to Sony.

in reply to geneva_convenience

I think the lack of communication from Sony and Playstation is causing a lot of frustration. At least acknowledge they know about the global outage.

This Week in Plasma: Final Plasma 6.3 Polishing

[Request] Few days ago a user had shared a link to their website which listed open source softwares (not sure on which community it was posted), unfortunately I did not save the website.

Few things I remember about the website are: it contained ads, it listed the software first you had to click on the description to understand to which software it was an alternative of.

I am not sure if this is allowed, mods please feel to remove it if it violates any guidelines.

Update: Thanks guys, got it!

Hardly surprising when American science is bullied into silence by fundamentalists pushing YEC, abstinence, raw milk, vaccine denial, moon landing conspiracy... not to mention capitalists taking subsidies for faster broadband multiple billions of dollars, multiple times, over decades, and pocketing it... gutting science programs & support at the hands of political agenda has consequences.
in reply to onwardknave

That plays a role obviously, but there's a bigger issue here as well that much of the research is driven by private interests. Even universities are reliant on private capital to operate. China's rapid technological progress stems from having state-driven R&D and centralized planning. The benefits are now becoming evident in China's leadership in AI-driven manufacturing, clean energy, and quantum computing, and many other areas. Incidentally, Bloomberg wrote about this just recently.

On the other hand, Western progress is hindered by fragmented policies, short-term priorities, and constant infighting. Despite similar R&D investments, China's scale and strategic patience yield greater returns, particularly in STEM fields and infrastructure development. This trajectory will likely secure China's leadership in technology going forward. The future belongs to those who build it fastest.

[Solved] How to use MPV IPC to display both media title name and progress bar?

Setting level to 3 in show-text just means that the it won't show up unless the user has set --osd-level to at least 3. It's like specifying how important the message is, so the user can disable less important information while still showing other stuff. It has nothing to do with what you're trying to do.

I don't know enough about mpv's IPC stuff to know to show the progress bar and some text at the same time, sorry.

ah ok, looks like I misunderstood what level is supposed to mean.

Anyways, I've found a solution and updated OP

Question regarding new PC build and throttling.

not familiar with the specific app you're using. am I reading that right, that you're throttling on power, current and temp?

if so, there's not much you can do. but if it's just temp throttling, you can get better fans/cooling.

if you're already satisfied with fans/cooling, then yes, you're pretty much using it to it's max.

to be clear:
throttling on power and current means you're getting as much as you can out of the hardware you have (without over clocking or similar). although, make sure your CPU governor is 'performance'.

throttling on temperature alone means you're not getting the most out of you're hardware that is technically possible, it means you're hitting the thermal TDP of the system. for some systems (laptops, generally), there's not much you can do there. but for others, you can tinker with cooling.

What I don't understand is how I could be throttling on temps. I've been watching them and the temps don't go above 60c for either GPU or CPU. And the other thing is, it will say I'm throttling as soon as the game loads when the temps are in the 50s. I have also been using a different program to track temps and the most I've seen CPU temps is 79c from loading shaders.

Edit: looking at the config file for mango hud, it says : display GPU throttling status based on power, current, temp or "other". It seems to me that, this popup appears if you have any 1 of those conditions.

A few things stand out to me in your screenshot.

It lists the GPU as consuming 0W, which is likely not true. Based on that, the power / current limit reason is probably inaccurate

Your temperatures are both well below TJ Max for those components, so I don’t see the Temp limit reason as valid either.

Your GPU utilization is at around 50%, but I also see your framerate at an even 144 - I would surmise that you have vsync enabled.

While that isn’t going away, chief executives of large pharmaceutical companies are broadening their horizons. Why spend $10 billion acquiring a U.S. biotech with a mid-stage drug when a similar molecule can be licensed from China for a fraction of the price?

So these fuckers are going to run the research sector through the same outsourcing treatment they ran manufacturing won't they.

I'm wondering what would happen if PRC doesn't profit maximize their product in the long run. As standard of living increases the cost of labor in China would get close to the cost of labor in the West. If the difference in cost of labor isn't a significant factor and Chinese product (manufacturing and IP like drugs) is sold close to the cost of labor and materials, wouldn't that force the Western firms to operate as non-profits? If they can't make significant profit on anything, won't that significantly disrupt the current capitalist model?

The west will just continue becoming more insular and cut trade off with the rest of the world so that the oligarchs can exploit western population. We already see this happening with cheaper and better Chinese alternatives either being banned or having huge tariffs placed on them.
in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

In the short run, yes. However in the long run, their profits have to shrink. They'll try recovering that from labor. If labor responds with organizing, the oligarchs would see their profits shrink further. Further, the West won't close up wholesale. Some parts would, others wouldn't. If people in the insular parts see people having it better across the border, they might vote to have that too. Assuming such a change could happen somewhat democratically. I don't think the West would be able to insulate long term. But that's a bet based on a lot of assumptions that could turn out wrong.
in reply to Avid Amoeba

That's all true, but capitalism encourages short term thinking, so they'll do whatever they see as necessary to secure quarterly profits. In the long run that will lead to the problems you describe and further erode faith in the system as a whole.
in reply to Avid Amoeba

The cost of living will always be lower in China compared to the West due to their organizing of society. Therefore, it will always cost less to use Chinese labor than to use Western labor (except prison slaves and migrant workers) because the US cannot reduce the cost of living effectively due to their underinvestment in infrastructure and their commitment to allowing profit to build sprawl that cannot be operated efficiently.
