It's important to remember that this shit is why DNC voting members finally kicked the neoliberals to the curb.

And that blaming the new DNC leadership for all the fucked up shit the last chairs did makes no rational sense.

A new chair was seated in mid February, and they actually are for party unity and fair primaries. Not the bullshit "party unity" where neoliberals bashed the left 24/7, an actual non biased political party who will let the voters decide who makes it to the general

We haven't had that in half a century

In other words, Politico is gunning for the low hanging fruit and ironically enabling a further divide.
in reply to Tony Bark

The media started being critical of Dems the second Ken Martin was elected DNC chair

Billionaires aren't happy with trump, but without the DNC blocking progressives in the primary, they'd rather burn the country down than let someone like Bernie or AOC be the candidate.

That's why there's such a big push for people to be mad at the DNC after we fixed the main problem with it. The billionaires don't control the DN anymore, and they can't control trump.

in reply to givesomefucks

All leadership being deferred to a national party is the problem. You cannot fix the DNC when it's existence is largely the problem. No National parties should really exist for more than 6 months every 4 years. Just long enough to coalesce behind the candidate the people voted for and help promote them through the general election. Then disband. Just as the House and Senate really wasn't supposed to exist for more than a few months a year. Outside planting and harvesting times. So as not too monopolize people's livelihoods.

Bad presidential candidates, oligarch control, and many of our other National political issues are symptoms of this. When so much power is left idling in the hands of so few highly unaccountable individuals. They won't resist using it for themselves. As is evident.

in reply to sleepyleaf

I have no trouble criticizing democrats for their abject failure in 2024 (and before), but to say this is the same as Trump’s behavior is ludicrous.

Comments like this? That’s BlueMAGA behavior.

my non gendered brother, cancer is a sensitive topic and we shouldnt be celebrating people getting it.

also hasan implied not to vote, doesnt get much more "BlueMAGA" then convinceing people not to vote blue.

Democrats and left leaning content creators are great at one meaningless thing when it comes to meaningful action that helps regular people:

THEATRICS AND PERFORMANCES that do minimal impact.

And I swear to the heavens seeing each content creator ragebait and make thumbnails of "omg you won't believe what the supreme court did to Trump today!"

Im so tired of this Rollercoaster that Ive stopped caring about the macro. If our system can't be saved from its designed structure of checks and balances then maybe it doesnt deserve to last.

But im done letting the macro impact my mental health. Im gonna enjoy my life as much as possible with my family because I cant do shit else except vote and move on. And ill die whenever the fuck shit hits the fan. And ill have no regrets. Fuck it all.

Nvrmnd. I just looked this up, this is about using slave labor to fight wild fires and I don’t care for the idea whatsoever.
in reply to Placebonickname

I have read the entire House Report- where are you seeing that this bill creates the ability to use slave labor on fires?
in reply to supernight52

I believe they're referring to the fact that prisoners have been used in firefighting efforts, but they're still subject to minimum wage and maximum hours laws when they do that work. With this amendment they could be paid nothing and thrown at fires with no rest until their bodies give out.
in reply to voracitude

That would make sense. I was looking for any mention of Penal employees or prison labor of some kind, but was unable to find it. I guess I was naive for thinking they just meant free employees.

Yeah, that all tracks with our current admin. Mildly surprised that I couldn't catch that from reading the House Report. Damn villainous method to make slave labor legal again. Especially for a job where you risk your life consistently, like wildfire fighters.
This entry was edited (7 months ago)
in reply to supernight52

Nowhere. Because it's already allowed. Don't need to make something legal that's already legal. 14th amendment literally allows for slave labor in the case of "criminals". Why do you think they keep trying to label everyone a criminal or terrorist?
We've been using slaves to fight fires for a long time.
in reply to Placebonickname

I have read the bill from beginning to end- it's literally just a bill to increase employment of the US Forest Service fire fighting team. It has a section that also makes it so the Secretary of Ag has the power to expedite the hiring process. The part that is concerning adds a stipulation about how they are able to exercise that power.

E.g.: "DHA expedites hiring by
removing competitive rating and ranking, preferences for
certain candidates, and requirements to consider the top three
candidates."

I am not saying this is good legislation, I am just confused by the language, and have no idea what all this will impact.

ETA: Nvm, this legislation is fucked. It allows hiring prisoners for no pay.

Retiree and disability beneficiaries are worried about delays in payments, processing and services amid cuts being made to the US’s social security system under the Trump administration.

Angel Morgan, a 44-year-old disability benefits recipient in Nashville, Tennessee, said she felt like she was “running in circles” navigating long lines at her local social security office and difficulties in trying to make an appointment online to talk about her benefits and how to participate in the Ticket to Work program, which provides career development services for disability beneficiaries."

We are moving to merit based hires and scrapping DEI. That’s why we hired a Fox News drunk to be the Secretary of Defense and influencers to run the FBI.

The entire point is to cripple the safety net so irreparably, it will be abolished and the Zoomers, who have always worked for no benefits, won't notice. To them, working until they drop at their desk will just be normal.

70% of the DOJ's Civil Rights Division lawyers are leaving because of Trump's reshaping

The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division is in upheaval amid a mass exodus of attorneys as the Trump administration moves to radically reshape the division, shelving its traditional mission and replacing it with one focused on enforcing the president's executive orders.

Some 250 attorneys — or around 70% of the division's lawyers — have left or will have left the department in the time between President Trump's inauguration and the end of May, according to current and former officials.

It marks a dramatic turn for the storied division, which was created during the civil rights movement and the push to end racial segregation. For almost 70 years, it has sought to combat discrimination and to protect the constitutional rights of all Americans in everything from voting and housing to employment, education and policing.

Yet another mission accomplished for Trump and his administration then... I genuinely wonder if 100 years will be enough to fix everything they fucked up - probably not.
in reply to doctortofu

We’re looking at the US being an authoritarian state. Trump’s just the first. It might get better after an armed revolution, but would likely end up as more of the same wearing different colors. After all, we won’t have the US to install a pro-democracy leader.
in reply to doctortofu

This was exactly how it was in the US until the 1883 Pendleton Act, which created the civil service. It was called the spoils system (as in "to the victor go the spoils"). Nominees were primarily awarded their positions out of loyalty or patronage than merit.

The 19th century sucked in a lot of ways, and government corruption and economic incompetence was a part of that. Welcome to the 19th century.

Taiwan wants peace with China but needs tight defense — Lai

Taiwan's president, Lai Ching-te, says his country wants dialogue with China but still needs to prepare for war. Lai, who is marking a year in power, rejects Beijing's claim of sovereignty over the self-ruled island.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te on Tuesday said that while Taiwan was ready to have exchanges with China, it also had to keep strengthening its defenses in the event that Beijing decided to assert its claim to sovereignty over the island with military force.

His remarks came as Lai — whom China has called a "separatist" while rejecting previous offers he has made for talks — marked one year in office.

He said Taiwan would keep strengthening its defense capabilities, adding that the best way to prevent a war happening was to prepare for it.

Illinois state lawmakers attempt long-shot repeal of BDS ban

Progressive members of the Democratic supermajority in the Illinois General Assembly are pushing forward a bill to reverse the decade-old state ban on boycotts of Israel, Capital News Illinois reported on Sunday.

Since 2015, Illinois has forbidden the investment of state pension funds in companies that engage in any form of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel.

At the same time, there may be pressure from the top to shelve the bill, given the pro-Israel billionaire and Democratic Governor JB Pritzker is an expected presidential nominee for the 2028 election, and will not want perceived anti-Israel movement within his state to hold back his campaign, Capital News reported.

in reply to geneva_convenience

I hope Pritzker understands that opposing this will LOSE him votes, whether it's for Governor or President.

It doesn't even fucking MATTER how you feel about Israel, how the hell is outlawing boycotts and divestment EVER acceptable?

in reply to JakenVeina

His goal is not to win but to prevent anyone opposing Israel from winning. Even at the cost of losing.

US terminates $60 million in Harvard grants over alleged antisemitism

The US Department of Health and Human Services said on Monday that it was terminating $60 million in federal grants to Harvard University, saying the Ivy League institution failed to address antisemitic harassment and ethnic discrimination on campus.

US President Donald Trump's administration has frozen or ended federal grants and contracts for the university worth nearly $3 billion in recent weeks.

Since taking office in January, the Republican president has sought to use federal research funding to overhaul US academia, which he says has been gripped by anti-American, Marxist, and "radical left" ideologies.

in reply to geneva_convenience

Imaging those ‘students’ paying the expensive tuition fee but instead of study, they sleeping in tents on campus to ‘support’.

Can you imagine that? People having empathy for those undergoing a genocide in which their university is complicit?

in reply to Saleh

Ok, here's a question for you:

Let's say Microsoft counters with "Our terms and conditions were very clear that this software should not be used in war/genocides/holocausts"

Is that good enough? Who's responsibility is it to check? Are vendors always supposed to keep tabs on their customers or is it a good enough excuse to say "naughty customer we told you not to do that"?

I'm not defending any actions here, but I always wonder if people want platforms that monitor and police everything or they value privacy and trust more.

I get it - Fuck Israel, Fuck Microsoft.

But if MS says "Israel lied on their TOS and said that this AI was only for educational purposes". You'd prefer that they violate every student's privacy in case they were secretly working for Mossad.

No?

in reply to badcommandorfilename

Israel lied on their TOS -> we remove access as they have been violating the contract. Again this doesn't need to deal with anyones privacy.

These contracts aren't with some university students though. They are directly with the Israeli military. And if they were with any universities in Israel, well these have close ties with the military including running logistics and IT infrastructure.

In a broader sense. These organizations are in violations of various laws and engaged in serious crimes. There is enough plausible indications that the Microsoft tools are also used for that. So by a simply logic of harm reduction Microsoft must terminate these contracts immediately. It does not require to establish evidence in either direction. The other party to the contract engaging in war crimes is all the evidence that is needed to terminate business with them.

in reply to badcommandorfilename

We're not talking about Israeli educational institutions.

If you're going to have a rule, you need to have a way to enforce the rule. Which is why MS wouldn't put it in the ToS. That, and Israel wouldn't sign that contract anyway. Every contract is unique.

saying "oh it's against our ToS" is pure bullshit.

in reply to badcommandorfilename

The strat here is to simply not provide services to the israeli military. It's that simple; I mean it's literally the IDF nothing good could come out of helping them with anything.

Damn if only we had known about these plans earlier, we could have done something!

Australian Conservative Party, The Nationals, Announce they are Leaving the Coalition.

After an embarrassing defeat in the latest election, The Nationals David Littleproud, announced earlier today they will not be entering into the coalition agreement with the Liberal Party for the first time since 1987.

in reply to Gold_E_Lox

The Nationals can now go back to their roots as a farmers’ party. Though they seem more interested in railing against solar/wind power and promoting coal (“nuclear power, to be ready in a generation’s time”). Maybe they’re angling for Clive Palmer to buy them out?
in reply to AllNewTypeFace

We need to get all the conservatives that are pro-coal to work the mines themselves to show us how good of a job it is.

Trump wants investigations into Springsteen, Beyoncé, Oprah and Bono

If Clownstick starts sending famous people to private prisons, that might actually piss off more Americans than a change in their own lives would.
in reply to MuskyMelon

I would support an investigation into Bono. That South Park episode pretty well summed up why I dislike him. I'm sure he's a decent guy, but yeah, pretty smug. (I don't really, shut up.)

We already know Oprah is terrible for platforming a bunch of terrible people (Doc Oz, Doc Phil, that rapey guy in South America). Behind the Bastards podcast has that info.

Bruce Springsteen and Beyoncé are totally awesome. Let your bullshit investigations reveal how cool they are. We're ready.

Putin just showed Trump how little he needs him

“The root causes of the conflict.”

These were startling words from a man purportedly on the path to peace.

But it is the nub of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s position of what must be solved for peace, after two weeks, or three months, depending on how you count, of mounting pressure for an immediate unconditional 30-day ceasefire. Unbothered, taking this most consequential of calls at a music school on the Sochi coast, the Kremlin head has returned to the start – to his false narrative about this war of choice being sparked by NATO expanding too fast.

https://www.cnn.com/2025/05/19/europe/analysis-putin-trump-phone-call-ukraine-latam-intl

in reply to MicroWave

At this point Putin has no choice but to keep the war going. His economy is sliding, and has been, and all that's propping it up is the switch to a wartime economy. Take that away and the whole house of cards collapses. So I don't give two shits what he says about anything regarding all this. He's stuck with no moves left.

Oh, and his population has been crashing for years. And now Russia is losing a solid chunk of healthy young men. Remember Putin creating a national holiday years ago? Everyone was to stay home and fuck. I'm not making this up. Haven't heard about it for a long time. Anyone?

in reply to MicroWave

It will be our war when Russian planes fly over us soil.
