Mocked, isolated and ignored: Trans people in Lithuania detail workplace harassment

cross-posted from: lemm.ee/post/64899569

  • Transgender people in Lithuania continue to face systemic discrimination in the labour market, including open ridicule, isolation and psychological abuse, according to experts who spoke at a parliamentary discussion marking the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
  • A recent national survey also found that only 22% of Lithuanians would feel comfortable working with a transgender colleague. That number drops to 19% when it comes to a transgender person in a leadership role, and even lower if such a person worked at their child’s school.

That said, under Garland’s watch antitrust efforts moved slower than many hoped and he didn’t reverse the Trump DOJ’s effort to derail the E. Jean Carroll case. Garland’s DOJ also went to the Supreme Court and asked to functionally eliminate Miranda rights. So… not great.

And just WHY did he vote for donvict, anyway? Was it really for "business savvy"?

I don't think a 100% on non-EU home buyers would be popular in Australia

Donald Trump West Point Commencement Speech Goes Off-Script

in reply to UnderpantsWeevil

Transcript from 5 years ago isn't super relevant at this point.

But... Politics also doesn't have a "last 30 days" rule like News and World, so I'll allow it for now.

Might be interesting to compare with any speech he gives this year.

in reply to jordanlund

Yeah, this post is misleading as he just gave the commencement address this year - yesterday in fact. Already received quite a bit of coverage and some outlets have not only articles but the full transcript:
newsweek.com/donald-trump-comm…

Anyone not knowing that might see this and be confused as the date isn't noted in the post.

Trump hijacks West Point ceremony to rant about ‘drag shows’

Donald Trump ranted to a captive audience of graduating West Point cadets about military drag shows, urging the students to focus on killing America’s enemies.

“The job of the U.S. armed forces is not to host drag shows, to transform foreign cultures, but to spread democracy to everybody around the world at the point of a gun,” the president said. “The military’s job is to dominate any foe and annihilate any threat to America anywhere, anytime, and anyplace.”

While college commencement addresses are usually a chance to celebrate the graduates’ achievements, the more than a thousand West Point cadets and their families were treated to a recounting of Trump’s war on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the military.

I loved how he kept calling people up to congratulate for records, and he'd let them speak and they all said "I love my friends" and stepped down. You could see him taken aback, like he thought they were going to glaze him

It was also wild to see him start out giving a normal commencement speech... Then suddenly it was like the meds wore off, he froze for a second, and he just started doing his normal rants. And that was like a quarter of the way in

Belgium’s future queen caught up in Harvard foreign student ban

Princess Elisabeth has completed first year of master’s degree but Trump administration’s crackdown may jeopardise studies

Princess Elisabeth, the 23-year-old future queen of Belgium, has just completed her first year at Harvard University but the ban imposed by Donald Trump’s administration on foreign students studying there could jeopardise her continued attendance.

The US president’s administration revoked Harvard’s ability to enrol international students on Thursday, and is forcing current foreign students to transfer to other schools or lose their legal status in the US, while also threatening to expand the crackdown to other colleges.

“Princess Elisabeth has just completed her first year. The impact of [the Trump administration’s] decision will only become clearer in the coming days/weeks. We are currently investigating the situation,” said a spokesperson for the Belgian royal palace, Lore Vandoorne.

no, but every other international student there, including people who are not so well off.

Israeli airstrike kills nine of Gaza doctor’s 10 children, reports say

An Israeli airstrike on Rafah reportedly killed at least nine Palestinian doctors and 10 children, according to Gaza health officials. The attack targeted a medical facility allegedly used by Hamas, which Israel claims housed militant operations. Palestinian sources deny military presence, stating it was purely a healthcare center. This incident escalates tensions amid stalled ceasefire talks, with international organizations condemning the high civilian toll. The strike occurred despite recent ICJ orders for Israel to halt its Rafah offensive, drawing widespread criticism over proportionality and adherence to international law.

The headline fits the article but not the summary. Nine out of her ten children killed, her husband and the remaining child in hospital. Her husband is also a doctor but no mention of doctors killed.

Just clarifying, not justifying.

in reply to RubberDuck

For when you really want to kill all the children but don't want to be caught directly killing them all. (Just kill all the doctors and food aid workers)

GOP won’t install Jan. 6 plaque honoring law enforcement, Democrats say

More than three years after its installation was approved by Congress, a plaque honoring law enforcement personnel for defending the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, is instead sitting in a Capitol basement utility room surrounded by tools and maintenance equipment.

The cast bronze memorial to the officers, which declares that “their heroism will never be forgotten,” was required by law to be installed by March 2023 near the west front of the building. That was the scene of some of the most intense battles between police and supporters of President Donald Trump who attacked the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the election of Joe Biden as president.

The legislation authorizing the memorial was part of an omnibus spending package approved by Democrats and 39 Republicans in 2022 and signed into law by Biden. Leadership of the House changed in 2023 when Republicans took control and before the plaque was ready to be installed. The memorial has been in limbo ever since.

I’m with you on this one. Lemmy has some bipolar opinions when it comes to cops. Definitely glad that January 6th failed, but we don’t need an ounce more hero worship for law enforcement. Their violence against the citizenry cancels out their credit for good deeds.

Violence against the citizenry is what they're paid for. They're the executive branch of the government holding the monopoly on vialence.

in reply to Peter Link

Israel's despicable starvation policy is a systematic war crime designed to destroy Palestinian life in Gaza. Its deliberate use of hunger as a weapon to eliminate the population - fits the legal definition of the war crime of starvation and the genocidal act of creating conditions calculated to bring about physical destruction of the group.

Is it one of the most egregious violations of international humanitarian law, of dignity and of our shared humanity
