How Trump has turbocharged a Canadian province’s quest for independence | Lisa Young

in reply to HellsBelle

I live here. It's still fringe.

Danielle Smith is already to the right of the population and trying to do the David Cameron thing, basically. Hopefully it will backfire less destructively.

Calgary needs to get their shit together and vote her out this time.

Twitter could be used as a weapon against Canada to promote destabilizing political movements such as the Alberta separatists mentioned in the article. I'd go as far as to say that Twitter under Elon Musk functions effectively as an extension or an arm of the Trump regime. No one should be using Twitter, especially those in other countries who are at risk of foreign influence from the Trump regime.

That's why I'm calling on Canadians to boycott Twitter and urge institutions, business, universities, sports teams and celebrities to switch to Bluesky. Most websites have an about or contact-us section. Use that and urge them to boycott Twitter.

in reply to MuskyMelon

The drones will just be used for constant surveillance of LGBTQ, nonwhite, and others whom MAGA has singled out.

More South Korean young adults economically ‘inactive’, especially women, college grads

  • South Korean young adults aged 15 to 34 who remained economically “inactive” rather than seeking employment reached 590,000 in 2024, an increase of 197,000 from 2019, according to a report released by the state-run Korea Employment Information Service on March 23.

When the dream goes from being a turn of phrase to an accurate description of attainability, it's no shock that some folks just say fuck it. We're seeing it show up in a lot of places under various names but it ends out being the same generalized thing.

Not sure I can agree with that, but otherwise none of this is surprising. It's a dystopian, capitalist shithole like most modern countries are.

Spain convenes European, Arab nations to ramp up pressure on Israel in Gaza

Representatives from European countries including France, Britain, Germany and Italy are joining envoys from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Morocco, the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Norway, Iceland, Ireland and Slovenia, who like Spain have already recognised a Palestinian state, are also taking part, alongside Brazil.

in reply to schizoidman

Why don't the arab countries allow more refugees, it's wild to me when so many lives are being lost... who cares about the geopolitics, let's save some lives, it's so sad the Palestinian people have enemies on both sides of them.
in reply to skozzii

Jordan for example already have 2 millions paleatinian refugees. Arab countries economies are weak and can't handle hundred thousands of refugees that will never be allowed to return to gaza after the war by Israel
in reply to skozzii

Palestinians want to live in Palestine. They don't want to be refugees.

But even if they wanted to leave, they can't. Not because of the Arab Nations not taking them in (barring what the other commenter has mentioned of them being poor). Israel is controlling the borders and checkpoints and they do not let anyone leave.

in reply to schizoidman

The Arab nations are a joke, pandering to whoever sells them weapons they don't know how to use (looking at you Gulf states). I'm writing this as a Lebanese who's sick of this non stop genocide. Strongly worded letters don't work, and now there's insanity in America, I can't see anything changes unless Europe somehow decide to sanction Israel on their own and hope other countries follow suit.

Malaysia slams 'double standards' on Gaza 'atrocities'

Describing them as a "direct result of the erosion of the sanctity of international law", Malaysia's Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan further told his Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) counterparts that the bloc "cannot remain silent".
in reply to schizoidman

"Slams" is tired, how about a more creative verb, perhaps "Malasia elbow dives off the top rope" or something
in reply to schizoidman

"The atrocities committed against the Palestinian people continue to reflect indifference and double standards," Mohamad said.

"ASEAN cannot remain silent," said Mohamad, whose country holds the rotating chairmanship of the bloc.

Foreign ministers from the 10-member association in February asserted their "longstanding support" for Palestinian rights.

Muslim-majority Malaysia has no diplomatic relations with Israel and many in the Southeast Asian country support the Palestinians.

Container ship sinks off India's south coast with hazardous cargo

"The vessel went down with 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous cargo and 12 containing calcium carbide," the statement said
in reply to Victor

No idea. I just work with acetylene and am familiar with old acetylene gas machines which use calcium carbide to make it. I have no idea what those toxins actually do in large amounts because I'm only used to dealing with them as fairly trace contaminants. I just know enough to know that the acetylene itself shouldn't be much of an issue but those two chemicals could be.

Four-year-old boy dies of starvation in Gaza due to Israeli blockade

A four-year-old boy has died in Gaza City from severe malnutrition caused by Israel's total blockade of the occupied Gaza Strip, Palestinian media reported on Sunday.

Doctors at al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital confirmed that Mohammad Mustafa Yassin, 4, died from prolonged malnutrition.

Yassin's death brings the number of Palestinians who have died from hunger-related causes to 58 over the past 80 days of the Israeli siege. An additional 242 people - mostly children and the elderly - have also died due to lack of access to food and medicine during this period.

Trump’s Legal Strategy Has a Name

in reply to BoycottPro

Please note that the 5calls script is only suitable for contacting Democrat senators in my opinion since it mentions Trump.

I don't think it matters if you say trump or not. Your calls are just tallied by their office yay/nay for the bill and maybe the reason why, which depending on the script you read will be different. Just be very clear about what you want them to do (vote nay) and a reason or two why in a short sentence before going into the details.

And don't be afraid to say you disagree with something trump is doing. If you can articulate a specific thing you do not like that the president is doing then tell your representatives. They need to hear it, they do represent you afterall. Being afraid to speak out is playing into the administrations hands. They'd rather everyone just be too scared to speak out

in reply to nimble

I totally get what you mean! The most important thing is to call, no worry about the words you will use.

If any Democrats vote for it I'd be surprised. Like yeah Schumer sucks but I think even they can see they'd be run out of town if any vote for this.

With the provision striping the courts ability to use federal funds to hold the executive branch in contempt it all but guarantees every Democrat will have to vote against it. The entire bill is likely considered unconditional because of it

That's been tried in a certain republic of the past, but the idea is fine generally.

Lawsuit: Wikipedia fired transgender worker who complained about harassment

A former employee of Wikipedia’s parent company has filed a federal lawsuit alleging she was fired after reporting her direct supervisor for gender discrimination and harassment.

The woman, Kayla Mae, was hired by the Wikimedia Foundation in November 2022, where she worked as a software engineer for nearly two years.

Her role allowed her to work remotely from Texas, and she was assigned to work on a team managed by Dennis Mburugu, a Wikimedia employee based in Kenya.

Within the first few months of her employment, she encountered problems with Mburugu, according to her complaint. Among other things, Mburugu asked her inappropriate questions about her sexual identity — she is a transgender female — and inquired about her medical history, Mae wrote in the complaint.

Oh god. Now Lemmy is going to be badmouthing Wikipedia until the end of time. Get ready guys!
in reply to wikipediasuckscoop

Yeah this and their bs donation begging despite having millions is why I don't donate any more. Not reactionary either, like just fuck Wikimedia. I contributed hours of work to construct things that would not be there without me, with no pay, and it infuriates me how much shit they do.

North Korea detains three over warship launch accident, state media reports

Kim Jong-Un vowed to punish those found responsible for ‘criminal’ damage to new 5,000-tonne naval destroyer

North Korea has detained three people over an accident that occurred during the launch of a new warship this past week, state media reported early on Sunday.

Pyongyang has said that “a serious accident occurred” at Wednesday’s launch ceremony in the eastern port city of Chongjin for a newly built 5,000-tonne naval destroyer, in which sections of the bottom of the vessel were crushed.

Seoul’s military has said the ship could have been developed with Russian help, possibly in exchange for Pyongyang deploying thousands of troops to help Moscow fight Ukraine.

in reply to YurkshireLad

Oh, no. Not for a long, long time. Long after they wished they were dead.
in reply to Geetnerd

The next three generations of their families may be headed to the gulags, as is the practice for “enemies of the people”

‘Roadmap for corruption’: Trump dive into cryptocurrency raises ethics alarm

The president’s hawking of $Trump memecoin has sparked a firestorm of criticism over potential influence buying

Donald Trump’s push to sharply ease oversight of the cryptocurrency industry, while he and his sons have fast expanded crypto ventures that have reaped billions of dollars from investors including foreign ones, is raising alarm about ethical and legal issues.

Watchdog groups, congressional Democrats and some Republicans have levelled a firestorm of criticism at Trump for hawking his own memecoin $Trump, a novelty crypto token with no inherent value, by personally hosting a 22 May dinner at his Virginia golf club for the 220 largest buyers of $Trump and a private “reception” for the 25 biggest buyers.

To attend the two events, the $Trump buyers spent about $148m, which will benefit Trump and partners, according to the crypto firm Inca Digital.

Assembly instructions for enzymes

In biology, enzymes have evolved over millions of years to drive chemical reactions. Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (MPI-DS) now derived universal rules to enable the de novo design of optimal enzymes. As an example, they considered the enzymatic reaction of breaking a dimer into two monomer molecules. Considering the geometry of such an enzyme-substrate-complex, they identified three golden rules that should be considered to build a functional enzyme.

She certainly already has super powers, idk how on earth you can pop out ten kids and raise them while also working an incredibly demanding job that takes a decade of education to even get
in reply to Peter Link

If this was an Israeli woman it would be wall to wall coverage of legacy media and social media and Trump would be giving a statement. But because she's just a Palestinian, people in the West shrug or make glib remarks about the death of her children
