Anyone else able to "sense" whether a solution on a forum will work before fully reading it through? Especially the long-winded ones.
Searching gives me the impression there's a million ways to solve the same problem on Linux, and I find myself profiling answers into about four categories at a glance:
- Succinct: one or two-liner, a single config file, or just a few clicks
- Long-winded song-and-dance: Full train of thought interspersed between various commands and logs, several config files (some of which don't already exist), or installing an obscure package that is no longer maintained
- Specific to a desktop environment or version I don't have
- Just looks wrong
I'll usually just take solutions from the first category, which almost always works, save for differences between updates and versions. Solutions in the second category also seem to end with a 50% chance of the OP unable to solve the problem. If I'm desperate, I'll try the second one, but it often ends up not working, eventually leading me to come up with a much cleaner solution of my own.
Curious if anyone else does this too and if those one-liners are really better solutions or if it's just confirmation bias.

What is your favorite simulator game?
Simulators are one of the earliest PC game genres, and remain compelling experiences to this day, even if they're not as popular as they used to be.
I like all kinds of combat flight sims; the MS Combat Flight Simulator from 1998 was something special, and I've had some similar fun in IL-2 Sturmovik. The newest civil air sims are pretty great too, I'll pop on a podcast and make a flight. They're particularly cool in VR.
I've also found the MechWarrior games to be fun, but I've only played 2 and 5. I got to play a bit of Steel Battalion with the full crazy controller at a con a few years back, and that's got to be a lot of fun once you really know what you're doing.
So what's your favorite sim?

I'm going to go with Euro truck simulator 2.
The experience of chill driving across europe and listening to podcasts is nice. The game isn't complicated enough to affect listening experience, but also engaging enough on it's own right that it stays interesting.
I have probably seen 80% or so of the roads and cities, bit they still feel fresh... Could be that I'm forgetting places faster than I'm getting familiar with them as well.
I do have a steering wheel and pedals, but they're just too cumbersome to get out and my wheel stand is made for someone at least 20 shorter than I am, so the experience is hampered a bit anyway. Because I'm lazy I've just resulted to driving witn mouse and keyboard combo.

Yep. I have all the map and special delivery DLCs too and it’s awesome.
I don’t get it why exactly, but it’s awesome just seeing the detail they put into the game. Getting all the photo locations is really hard!
And some of the achievements take a looooong time to get.
It's great in VR, i just have an ancient oculus devkit 2 or so, its horrid mess of cables I don't want to deal with
Too early adopter issues. :P
Elite Dangerous FTW. 🤘🏼
I haven't played since ~planetary landings/Mamba release (pre-TurdReich, IIRC?🤮), but back then, me & my Mur-der-Lance in Black Friday skin were proudly part of the anti-griefer brigade.
(Huge underbelly particle cannon + overcharged boost for baiting said ass-clowns into a 180° top speed yaw-slip one-shot kill trap = mmm, so good <chef's kiss>)
Even DIYed my desk chair w/ Vesa mounts to house a Warthog replica HOTAS, and ran an alt rig overhead for the Index to the battlestation (vs the default full room, standing set-up), et al.
Ahh... Those were the days. 🤩❤️🔥
p.s. Nowadays, I get close to reliving that nostalgia via my heavily-modded (250+) Starfield NG+, but am quietly & reservedly hopeful for the upcoming Osiris Reborn release... 🤞🏼😅
^ahem^ <glares @ No Man's Sky launch>
You want the list of 250+? 😅
I will say this much: the new Camina Drummer preset skin is perfection, and my head canon is forever changed. (The same awesome modder is also working on an Amos, but w/o the dialog to back it up, I'm not sure I'd run it)
edit: Currently, 253 on the pre-NG+ rerun:

Motor Town, Operation Harsh Doorstop, Easy Red 2, Sailwind, Hydroneer, Liftoff!, Shredders, Old Market Simulator, Cold Waters Dot Mod, Nebulous Fleet Command, From The Depths, Helicopter Gunship DEX and Out Of Ore are all great "sims".
I also consider extremely mechanically deep rpgs with realistic systems like Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead or Unreal World to be simulators and both are superb.
I am trying out Ships At Sea but don't have enough experience yet to give a thumbs up or down yet on it (Check out Sailwind!).
Sailwind is a "sailing simulator" as in actual sailing!

It isn't marketed primarily as a racing game or a high speed driving game, but it just feels so damn good I have put SO many urgent taxi job miles in that game it isn't even remotely funny.
I regret none of that time lol
I also love doing urgent taxi jobs and cruising in multiplayer while being around players doing radically different vibes of driving jobs.
It makes the whole driving experience so much more interesting than when everyone is just driving lamborghinis and ferraris are 200mph and the rest of the vehicles are AI. The map just ends up feeling "more alive" somehow in Motor Town, idk I love it.

RAH-66 Comanche for flying sim.
Wolfpack (from Brøderbund) for submarine sim. I believe it is also free on archive.org. (Added link: archive.org/details/msdos_Wolf…)
Euro Truck Simulator 2 for trucking sim.

I credit Kerbal Space Program for my ability to think in three dimensions. Without KSP, I would have been some kind of dumbass. I thought getting to orbit was just a matter of going up until I was like 18 years old
Have you ever pulled up an old save file to look at the stuff you used to design? I did that the other day and found out that I used to be good at this game. Folded space stations, massive mining rigs, Apollo Style landers, a beautiful SSTO that's braindead easy to fly, an interplanetary module that can dock to the back of said SSTO, I made fancy shit. Nowadays I just slap boosters and docking ports on fuel tanks and call it good enough
I gotta post pictures from that save file sometime
Ms flight simulator is drop dead gorgeous, but X plane has a better flight engine.
You can do a lot to improve how it looks, too. There's a lot of custom terrain, and you can download meshes made from satellite photos.
It also works better in VR.
My parents got me a copy of Harrier Jump Jet by Microprose one christmas. I can't even begin to imagine how many hours I spent on that game, both actually playing it and studying the manual for it. Still have the manual actually but the floppies are long gone.
After that I got every Microprose sim I could get my hands on, F14 Fleet Defender was probably my favorite after Harrier.
Then I kinda lost interest in simulators until Arma came along, spent years where I hardly played anything else.
Nowadays though ETS is pretty much the only sim I play.
Euro truck simulator 2!
I have lots of hours in this game, playing date and night. At some point I had a Logitech wheel with pedals and shifts, it was so damn good!!!
My routine was to get a long route through graphic and small roads, listening to radio for hours.
Cultist Simulator. (half joking 😂).
Big fan of Cities Skylines in city simulator genre.
I definitely have the most time spent in Project Cars 2 on PS4, but I've since switched to PC sims and have been playing Automobilista 2 since it is the most similar.
I'd like to get into Assetto Corsa more but idk how to get the mods running on Linux / Steam

China, Russia, and Iran have hypersonic missiles. And that changes everything.
Bullets:
- China is the world leader in the development and deployment of hypersonic missile systems.
- Russia and Iran also have successfully built and recently used hypersonic platforms in conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
- The United States is racing to close the gap, and hopes to build systems for some Army units next year.
- But the problem is that no air defense platforms can intercept inbound hypersonic munitions.
- This is the reality that confronts career politicians and military officers in Western countries: an armed conflict against any country with hypersonic missiles invites catastrophic losses to ground bases and naval fleet assets.
- Those risks will be deemed unacceptably high, and in the event of potential conflict in the Western Pacific or Persian Gulf will likely result in disengagement and withdrawal of American naval forces.
China, Russia, and Iran have hypersonic missiles. And that changes everything.
This is a transcript, for the video found here:Kevin Walmsley (Inside China / Business)
changes everything?
does it though? War is profit. So it’ll “change” the ROI before it changes anything else.

When I say to the same degree I'm not saying there aren't people with thousands of games elsewhere. I'm saying there are more of them on Steam and they tend to collect higher amounts of games on average.
Board game enthusiasts don't always have thousands of board games, most console gaming enthusiasts don't have giant walls of games lining their house, etc.
That said, I don't have sources to cite here other than my personal interactions with other steam users on social media and my steam friends list number of games. I could be wrong as this isn't hard data but I'd bet money I'm correct though if there was a way to verify the comparison.

Could that just be due to the fact that things like humble bundle would give 10+ games a month for like 20$? Or the amount of sales that steam has allowing you to get another another 10 - 20 games for 50$, or the price of a board game?
If Nintendo, still epic, or Xbox had sales of this magnitude I'm certain you would see significantly more "hoarding" there as well
like this
riot and OfCourseNot like this.
The argument isn't that only Steam gamers are hoarders. The argument is that game hoarders congregate on Steam. You can have hoarding gamers in the wild, and those wild hoarders may never touch Steam, but you're guaranteed to find hoarding gamers on Steam. If you're looking to sell games to hoarders you're going to sell more when you do it where hoarders regularly visit.
It's the same reason Epic is giving away free games. They're trying to attract hoarders by giving them a free hoard and regularly inviting them into their shop. They won't really attract hoarders who are entrenched on Steam but they will attract future hoarders who might not yet have a huge Steam library.
A bunch of drunken sailors who spend money irresponsibly?
So... pirates?

massive_bereavement likes this.
My steam library is full of humble bundles that I only bought for 2 games because it would be like $5, cheaper than buying regularly, and still getting like 7 other games with them.
And that's even with me giving away keys from games I know I won't ever play.
So basically "Valve discovered a gold mine by selling you so many games" and "it's your fault for spendijg money on games". Yeah wait wut? As if it's someone's fault that so many games are getting released. Also ending with "beware, not every customer is a die-hard fan". Wow.
Go crack the F2P business model next, Sherlock.
Buying an indie platformer that you might not play is not anywhere close to actual IRL hording. And it's not even what is being described as digital hording in that article from UCLA.
It's straight up irresponsible to compare it to an actual hording mental disorder. Like, you must not have ever experienced that in any capacity to think that.
Although, surely digital horders have some cross over. But the prevalence of people not playing a game they bought on discount ain't it fam.
Switch 2 vs Steam Deck: Cyberpunk 2077 Benchmarked - Docked & Handheld Tested | Digital Foundry
Switch 2 vs Steam Deck: the Cyberpunk 2077 face-off
One of the most requested pieces of Digital Foundry content has been a comparison between Nintendo Switch 2 and Valve's…Richard Leadbetter (Eurogamer.net)
Most games on Switch 2 will be bespoke ports while Deck will run Windows versions through a compatibility layer because Proton made devs forgo Linux native versions. Those tests were done in both handheld and docked. For handheld there are pros and cons for both but Switch looks much better, has better battery life (although with more dips below target framerate). Docked Switch simply blows the Deck away but that’s not a real life scenario really as you’ve said.
This is not a one-off, Switch is just newer hardware that’s carried by DLSS too. If you game on a budget you can buy and sell used copies on Switch as well. Not as simple decision as you make it out to be.
I am at a point that I kinda long for an update. Like the HTC Vive > Valve Index.
I know there are beefier handhelds but AFAIK the difference is not high enough for me to justificate an upgrade. Its really games released this year. Before, FSR 3 makes almost anything playable on Deck.

Either way, it's the right idea. If you can't understand what you're doing but you do it anyway, you're going to create all kinds of problems for yourself.

Doesn't teach how to fix the problem, but at least they'll get real proficient with setting up new system partitions.

However applying those fixes and then learning to fix it is a great way to learn how to troubleshoot and unb0rk your system.

That said, with my limitted knowlege, I can still spot the 50% that have no chance in hell of working pretty quickly.
OTOH, if a solution is succinct, upvoted, and still looks wrong, I'm at least going to look into the problem further with that as a reference point before I write it off completely.

Its hard to solve issues, even harder to keep the solution working after a certain amount of time.

But no, its because I learned the absolute basics of computer literacy and the experience I now have is grounded in that. I don't want praise for "working magic", I want people to fucking spend a small amount of their time learning the most BASIC of IT skills so I don't have to waste my time fixing shit you should know.
Sorry, my frustration might be showing just a little.

Doing it for free sucks though.

Once upon a time, I was going to go into IT but turns out that no amount of money was worth it for me because my tolerance for stupidity and willful ignorance is next to zero.
TBF, I still smile and tell family members it's all good, no problem to fix and then vent my inward seething later on to my spouse 😅

So to answer the question, I can usually tell I'm getting close to the solution when I say "Oh for fuck's sake" as I'm closing tabs lol.

Despite trying to reinstall things like 3 times before.
The key is you HAVE to forget about the problem or it knows your trying to trick it and it breaks it self again!
