Israel remains in Eurovision
Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands and Slovenia will boycott next year's Eurovision Song Contest, after Israel was allowed to compete.
They were among a number of countries who had called for Israel to be excluded over the humanitarian toll of the war in Gaza, and accusations of unfair voting practices.
Despite calls for a vote on Israel's participation, members instead approved a new set of rules intended to protect the integrity of the contest.
Ireland's national broadcaster RTE said it felt that its "participation remains unconscionable given the appalling loss of lives in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there which continues to put the lives of so many civilians at risk."
In a statement, Dutch broadcaster Avrotros said that "participation under the current circumstances is incompatible with the public values that are essential to us".
Spanish broadcaster RTVE added: "The board of directors of RTVE agreed last September that Spain would withdraw from Eurovision if Israel was part of it."
"This withdrawal also means that RTVE will not broadcast the Eurovision 2026 final... nor the preliminary semi-finals."

i don't believe isreal is going to last forever, but i do believe that it'll be around long enough to make its actions normalized to the point of acceptance like it's some sort of "necessary evil" at worst or something regrettable but so entirely intellectual that i can be easily dismissed because "it was in the past" at best. examples of the latter are best demonstrated by the dismissals of reparations by the united states and south africa or the socially enforced silence of the lasting impacts of franco's spain.
i foresee a diet-isreal like entity replacing isreal that's aligned w the same forces that created isreal and it still gives the palestinains the wrong end of the stick, but w a wafer thin veneer of equality; like the americans, canadians, australians & new zealanders do to their native populations today.
Not at all wierd, China has been a strong supporter of Palestinian liberation for over half a century, and Muslims in China are quite happy. I'm assuming you're referring to the western allegations of genocide in Xinjiang, though there's pretty much no actual evidence for it. The best and most comprehensive resource I have seen so far is Qiao Collective's Xinjiang: A Resource and Report Compilation. Qiao Collective is explicitly pro-PRC, but this is an extremely comprehensive write-up of the entire background of the events, the timeline of reports, and real and fake claims.
I also recommend reading the UN report and China's response to it. These are the most relevant accusations and responses without delving into straight up fantasy like Adrian Zenz, professional propagandist for the Victims of Communism Foundation, does.
Tourists go to Xinjiang all the time. You can watch , though it obviously isn't going to be a comprehensive view of course.
Xinjiang: A Report and Resource Compilation
Western governments have levied false allegations of genocide and slavery in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. A closer look makes clear that the politicization of China’s anti-terrorism policies in Xinjiang is another front of the U.S.Qiao Collective
From the conclusion of the UN report you linked:
Serious human rights violations have been committed in XUAR in the context of the Government’s application of counter-terrorism and counter-“extremism” strategies. The implementation of these strategies, and associated policies in XUAR has led to interlocking patterns of severe and undue restrictions on a wide range of human rights. These patterns of restrictions are characterized by a discriminatory component, as the underlying acts often directly or indirectly affect Uyghur and other predominantly Muslim communities.
But this is all just whataboutism anyway. We can be against human rights violations regardless of who is doing it and whether they condemn each other.

Investigation ordered after Iraq appears to designate Hezbollah and Houthis terrorists
The apparent designation of Lebanon's Hezbollah and Yemen's Houthi movement as terror groups by the Iraqi government sparked confusion and recriminations on Thursday, with authorities later saying the sanctions were announced in error.
The decision, published on 17 November by the justice ministry in the official gazette, surprised many, as the Iraqi government appeared to group the two organisations in the same bracket as al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.
Initially, many saw the designation as a sign that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, whose outgoing government is largely composed of parties with links to Iran, was buckling under American pressure. Little attention was paid to the move until Thursday, however, when news outlets belatedly began to pick up on it.
The controversy prompted questions from observers: were Hezbollah and the Houthis genuinely placed on the list by mistake, or was the government trying to backtrack to curb anger from its allies?

Yeah, some people on the internet like to oversimplify and I get how your impression arises that those people bend the narrative how they like it.
On the other hand, it's pretty well-documented that
- western governments work with authoritarian leaders when they're not hostile to western corporate interests (see, e.g. Saudi Arabia)
- western governments fund opposition groups no matter if they're democratic or not as long as they can expect an outcome that's better for their corporations' interests (see, e.g. the guy that leads the current Syrian government; see also the royalist opposition in Iran [mostly in exile])
Also left-wing opposition inside western states is often demonized although we have similar aims as some highly-praised opposition movements in other countries.

ah yes, the most nuanced of political takes: the west is the devil and the cause of all evil.
how is this take any different than the u.s. propoganda that would say very similar shit about communism. it's all the same team sports bullshit. politics is way more complicated than that. there is no great boogeyman that you can point a finger at as "the bad guy".
every problem is more nuanced than side vs side. anyone that tells you otherwise is just being divisive and wants to push you to hate. not to support their ideas and solutions. you'll notice that takes like this never offer a solution or a goal other than blame. it's OK to just ignore the finger pointers. they never accomplish anything and are usually pushing hate.
so basically, bring anything other than hate and blame and I'll listen. otherwise fuck off with your propoganda.
there is no great boogeyman that you can point a finger at as “the bad guy”.
Well, there is no boogeyMAN but there is boogeyCLASS and they are the billionaire/trillionaire class

It's true, that's how it's different. There's nothing "complicated" about how Britain installed the Shah in Iran or America helped Saddam wage a war with Iran that killed half a million people. Some things are just fucking evil.

Name one major American rebellion that wasn’t the Boston Tea Party or the Civil War. And in said rebellion, depict how Americans acted in any way like this stupid meme.
Lastly, Star Ware was most certainly NOT based on the Vietnam War. Lucas himself said it was mostly based on the mythology of the Hero’s Journey, WWII where the Axis was the inspiration for The Empire, biblical events, Ancient Rome, and the American Revolution- depicting the rebels as being the Americans fighting off the brits.
You people really need to stop recreating reality and adjust your world view accordingly.

Lucas, you see, originally conceived “Star Wars” while many Americans were questioning leadership during Richard Nixon’s presidency.
“It was really about the Vietnam War, and that was the period where Nixon was trying to run for a [second] term, which got me to thinking historically about how do democracies get turned into dictatorships?” Lucas said at his Skywalker Ranch earlier this month. “Because the democracies aren’t overthrown; they’re given away.”

And there's a bunch of stuff that's potentially very useful. Making a live map from a map image sounds very interesting, e.g. with a historical map.

I think you can disable the "WiFi scan throttling" option in the Developer Options, which might remove this default limitation

Thank you for the warning and source.
I think I had read about this.
Personally I use IronFox on Android, but Firefox otherwise.
Even if we take this at worst case scenario, it is a much lesser evil than Google in my opinion.
And they still open source everything (I think?) and as far as I'm aware allow 100% configuration to remove or tweak anything we don't like one way or another.
More recently I was also not happy with their introduction of AI crap in the browser which can also be disabled.
It would be better to be disabled by default and even better not to be present, yes, but well...
As long as it does not get too out of hand and as long as they keep it open so anyone con remove that crap from forks and/or through configuration... Given our choices, I think they deserve recognition for their work.
Even if we don't agree with everything they do.
I never donated for them and used Firefox for over 20 years.
Even if it goes downhill really fast starting now (Which I hope it won't, and the future would suddenly turn much bleaker in this regard), I think I should be thankful for 20+ years of good service.
I never switched away from Firefox except for 2-3 of its forks on Android. And Librewolf as non main browser on pc.
I'm also keeping an eye on ladybird but not keeping my hopes up yet.
All that being said, your concerns are valid and I do share them. I just want to reinforce that when all is said and done.. No matter what the future looks like..
They were here for us for at least 20 years.
Oooh I bet this will work for viewing my salt water aquarium at night so I can see the nocturnal critters and corals at work!

"more repos = more apps out of the box" sounds nice in theory but IMO this is more of a downside than it might appear. Having a bunch of repos enabled out of the box means you have to be more careful about which repo offers what app and some apps are even offered in multiple repos. I got bit by this when I installed an app from IzzyOnDroid instead of F-Droid by accident.
With F-Droid you get the baseline repo that has high standards and then you can opt in to having additional repos that may have different or lower standards. Having those extra repos enabled by default may give a false reassurance that those other repos also conform to F-Droid's standards, or that those other apps are "in F-Droid" when really they're in IzzyOnDroid or some other third party repo. I've seen enough instances of that and there are a few even in this thread.
I agree, but I also know that there are many people with an eye of design and there are other alternatives.
But Markor is my favorite app, especially because it can edit .md files from the filesystem (kinda like Obsidian for mobile but FOSS)

How to show file icons by default application in GNOME?
Hi everyone,
I’m using Fedora Linux 43 with GNOME 49. By default, GNOME shows file icons based on the file type, not the application that opens them.
What I’d like to achieve is for file icons to show the icon of the program that is set as the default to open the file—similar to how it works in Windows.
For example, in my screenshot, I have three files that are all opened by the same program by default (VSCodium in this case), but each one has a different icon based on its file type. I’d like them all to show the icon of the program instead.
Is there a way to show file icons based on the default app?
Thanks in advance!
This isn't a GNOME-specific thing as other DEs also display files by their file type. It's all defined by the icon theme.
I'm not sure if there exists an icon theme that replaces the unique filetype icons with specific application icons, but if such a thing does exist, that could be a solution.
You could also edit the icon theme you're using yourself too, if you're feeling adventurous. Using the Papirus icon theme, on my system the image representing a python text file is located in /usr/share/icons/Papirus/64x64/mimetypes/text-x-python.svg. I could replace that image with anything. I'm not sure why I'd want to do that, but if you really want to replace all these images with an image of VSCodium no one's gonna stop you.
Maybe there's a script that does this automatically? If such a thing exists, it'll probably follow the steps I just mentioned.
A New Anonymous Phone Carrier Lets You Sign Up With Nothing but a Zip Code
Nicholas Merrill received a hand delivered National Security Letter from the FBI in 2004, ordering him to give up data on one of his customers.
Merrill opened it and read the letter while the agent waited. The first and second paragraphs told him he was hereby ordered to hand over virtually all information he possessed for one of his customers, identified by their email address, explaining that this demand was authorized by a law he’d later learn was part of the Patriot Act.
The third paragraph informed him he couldn’t tell anyone he’d even received this letter—a gag order.
He then fought a landmark, decade-plus legal battle against the FBI and the Department of Justice. As the owner of an internet service provider in the post-9/11 era, Merrill had received a secret order from the bureau to hand over data on a particular user—and he refused. He refused and won.
After that, he spent another 15 years building and managing the Calyx Institute, a nonprofit that offers privacy tools like a snooping-resistant version of Android and a free VPN that collects no logs of its users’ activities.
Now the completely anonymous phone service. The full article is worth the read.

Does anyone know how to make the Arch text bigger?
ok well i installed arch just fine, no issues with getting everything up and running. i just noticed that the "make text bigger" shortcut that works for my mac terminal didn't work with arch, so i did some googling and still couldn't find anything
right now i think i'm just gonna go with fedora, unless you or someone else can convince me otherwise. i like the UI better and, ngl, i'm not like a whiz with software so i don't know how to customize like every little thing. so i think fedora is a better fit for me because it looks a LOT nicer and it comes with some shit preinstalled
go with fedora
i feel you'll be happier with it
i just noticed that the “make text bigger” shortcut that works for my mac terminal didn’t work with arch
That's because in MacOS it's a terminal emulator, a GUI application with a CLI inside.
In Arch, if you didn't install a desktop environment, the terminal is the raw TTY, not an emulator, so it does not have reszing/zoom options.
But as @anon5621@lemmy.ml mentioned, you can set the font of the TTY to a bigger font using the setfont command.
setfont ter-132bOther fonts located here so u can choose and use name of to apply with setfont
ls /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/
More likely than not you're confusing modifier keys.
On the Mac, the zoom is [Command] + [+].
In Linux it's [Control] + [+]
This is pretty much true across the board. It's sometimes non-obvious because wrappers like UTM try to "help".
The alternative is to ssh into the VM and continue to use the MacOS shortcuts you're used to.
Source: I've been using Linux on MacOS guests for a very long time.
i think ur talking about the Linux console. don't bother customizing that. install kde or whatever gui u use. then open the terminal (e. g. konsole or gnome-terminal). ur zoom shortcuts should work out of the box now.
too bad u switched already. u were one command away from having the gui
I'm making a FOSS all-in-one file converter app - looking for opinions!
I'm currently working on a file converter app that lets you easily convert your files in bulk without needing to mess around with 500 settings or confusing command-line apps. It's mostly a replacement for all those "convert X to Y" websites.
This is just a front-end for ffmpeg and imagemagick, but the goal is to make something so simple even my parents could use without uploading sensitive files to shady websites on the internet. I've looked around, and I found all the local GUI converters like Handbrake are unwieldy to use, especially if you just want to convert in bulk.
The project is still very early, but I'd like some feedback:
- Does anyone think this project is worth finishing, or are there too many GUI file converters out there already?
- What do you think about the UI so far?
Cheers.

Good idea for an app. Linux especially would benefit from more high quality apps aimed at less-technical users.
Would be good to include audio-only conversion too.
Or use ai (its a basic valid use case imo) to help you learn the ffmpeg commands.
I also just copy the shutter encoder commandafter running it and reuse that since it lets you grab it. Just swapping out vb values and the input/output. Lets me do it over my iphone wiht the same settings (a-shell supports ffmpeg)
This is crystallizing something I've been thinking about for a while. LLM use in this case is kind of like GPS navigation for driving. If you never care about learning how to navigate without GPS, then by all means use it all the time. Same goes with ffmpeg, rsync, tar, or whatever. If you never want to learn how to use it without AI, just use it all the time.
I guess the difference is satellite navigation doesn't steal from people or use an ugly amount of power.

Q: What happens with video files?Video files get uploaded to our lightning-fast RTX 4000 Ada server. Your videos stay on there for an hour if you do not convert them. If you do convert the file, the video will stay on the server for an hour, or until it is downloaded. The file will then be deleted from our server.
