This attitude is plainly wrong. If you use Linux because it is free as "free of charge" then you are missing a point. You should use it because it is open.

I would even say that they should contribute the same amount of money to organisations that actually develop a software that they are going to use. Because they will certainly need support and security patches and this will never be free

According to this Interview from 2021 costs are ultimately expected to be roughly the same.
Also it can be argued that having Support and security patches for the Software is more or less required by law if you intend to use it in (German) public Service.

Some people use it because it's free, some because it's open, and some simply because it's not Windows nagging them. With every movement that gets popular you'll have people that don't join for the cause but because something in the movement aligns with them, we should allow those people to use the software without making this a purity thing, at the end of the day desktop Linux needs users, not zealots, first and foremost.

The fact that people can come in and put up with Linux in spite of not being here for the cause should be celebrated.

As the article notes they are planning to invest 9 million euros in the transition, so they clearly don't expect it to be "free of cost." The difference is paying 15 million euros to license some proprietary American product, versus investing 9 million euros in the free software world.

And as I commented in another thread - I believe in response to your post - we can either collectively acknowledge the true and full cost of rectifying this situation, including fairly compensating those who are affected, or we can stick our heads in the sand and pretend that me and my kids, who were born in this country no differently than indigenous families and who know no other home, are expected to destroy our lives in service of the wrongs of the past.

If private property is affected, then the displaced people need to be fairly compensated. In general the impact on everyone needs to be considered in the calculus. I opened my eyes for the first time in this country, just like everyone else born here did, regardless of what atrocious actions were committed by those in the past. I have nowhere to go, this is my home as much as it is anyone else's.

If we don't acknowledge these facts willingly and openly i fear we will be forced to acknowledge them unwillingly.

I'm going to talk about private land exclusively.

What happened in the past is the government appropriated the land, it seems at the very least unethically, and then sold it to private interests. Somewhere along the line an innocent citizen bought the land thinking it was freehold or otherwise was the owner's land to sell. It seems that now the land is being expropriated.

If it was never the government's land to sell, and the courts have ruled in that way, then the government needs to compensate the people to whom the land was sold.

This cost needs to be considered by the government when they negotiate with FN groups. It is the true and total cost of reconciliation. If it is excluded then it will cause enormous dissatisfaction with the entire exercise of reconciliation, and it will eventually destroy the program. If the goal is harmonious coexistence, this will be unachievable if some of the victims - and they are also victims - are pushed out and ignored.

Let’s be clear about what you are actually saying here. You are describing the privatization of stolen land as if it were a simple matter of unfortunate paperwork. The government did not simply unethically appropriate the land. The settlers orchestrated a campaign of displacement and genocide, then laundered the loot through property deeds to create a class of settlers whose innocence is built on that foundational violence. That citizen did not buy freehold land. They bought a fantasy, a clean title washed in the blood of the original people who were murdered or removed from it. They are finally, begrudgingly, acknowledging a truth that Indigenous people have never stopped stating which is that the land was never Canada's to sell.

Your entire argument hinges on the moral panic of the settler who feels cheated. But where is your panic for the people who were cheated of everything? It says the ultimate victim of theft is the one who ended up holding the stolen goods, not the people who were robbed in the first place. You call them also victims. They're not victims, they are the beneficiaries. Unwitting perhaps, but beneficiaries nonetheless of a system that granted them property through ethnic cleansing. Reconciliation priced on making those beneficiaries happy is not reconciliation. It is the perpetuation of the same power dynamic with a polite apology attached.

When you demand a full cost and schedule, you are talking about a budget for justice. You want to put a ceiling on what is owed. But true reconciliation isn't a government program you can sabotage with stakeholder dissatisfaction. It is the unfinished business of dismantling a colonial project. If the current property owner is compensated, that is a cost of doing business for a state that built itself on theft. It is not a debt owed to the public by Indigenous people. The goal is not harmonious coexistence built on a ledger that balances the comfort of settlers against the rights of nations. The goal is justice, and justice is inherently disruptive to the unjust peace that has existed here for centuries. You cannot put a timeline on decolonization. The only thing that needs to be made clear is that the era of pretending these lands were ever legitimately Canada's to give away is over.

For one I never said it wasn't going to impact private property owners, nor did I say I diidn't expect it to. Ukraine at least follows geneva conventions regarding POWs (not killing surrendered soldiers, fair treatment, no torture, etc) unlike Russia which attacks civilians (apartments, hospitals, schools, grocery stores, etc), killing their own for not going on suicide missions, Russian commanders stealing money from the ones sent on suicide missions.

You can spout Russian talking points that have 0 evidence, but there is lots of evidence showing Ukraine is on the right sode of history.

It wasn’t just the indigenous people who were robbed, either.

The main issue is that Europeans had a very different concept of land ownership and land management; in the European view, land was a thing to be conquered, subdued, and divided up for exploitation by those who successfully did so.

The indigenous perspective, for the most part (different peoples had varying views on this), was that the land was something of which people were a part, and needed to be kept in balance.

When Europeans hear “unceeded”, they hear “land they never intentionally sold”. When indigenous people hear “unceeded”, they hear “land we never collectively agreed would be used in this way.”

I believe the majority of reasonable Canadians want to reach a just and fair reconciliation that rights the wrongs of the past. Any reconciliation that we expect to be done in mutual goodwill must consider the other innocent parties as well.

If private land is affected, then the land owners releasing title need to be fairly compensated by the government. That is the true and total cost of reconciliation.

Many people in this country are sympathetic to righting the wrongs of the past, but they are not going to destroy their own lives to do it. Let's not forget that ancestry and history do not change the fact that people born in this country, whether indigenous or not, have known nothing other than this country, it is their home no less and no more than anyone else born here, and they have nowhere else to go.

There also needs to be a very transparent and clear timeline and total cost for reconciliation with a clear endpoint milestone.

Fighting against these things will simply create an expanding group of malcontents that will eventually have enough political p

I mean, there's a real difference between separating the art from the artist and separating the commodity from the producer. One is about enjoying or appreciating a work, while the other is about buying or funding it.

But I feel addressing the first without addressing the second is dangerous in our current social context.

Too many of us are naturally inclined to ignore the political/moral implications of our consumption.

Sure, no ethical consumption under capitalism.

Within the set outside of the pure ideal, there are still gradations of more and less ethical. Where entertainment is concerned, it is hard to accept people shrugging because capitalism, when there is more media being produced on this planet than any human being is ever going to have the time or ability to run out of.

We do not get to decide whether we are going to enrich the top ten thousand or so people at all ever because we do have to exist in this world, but I think there is something to be gained in exercising your ability to make ethical choices where it does not mean the difference between eating or heating or meds, or not.

If the artist did something heinous, I would say take the art and then forget the artist's name. Make it common use, and no need to attribute the name of the artist to the art. Give it a pseudonym if need be, assign a random name to the piece, and let the actual artist's name fade away.

People don’t want to deal with the discomfort of facing that they supported, even by accident, a piece of crap and it only gets worse each day that put it off. And it’s not an excuse, I think they’re weak for it.

I’ve done it before, and I will not make excuses for it. I made a priority and sometimes I’m ashamed of that choice. For music and other art…there’s just so much good shit out there that I really don’t care if I can’t listen to a certain band/artist anymore.

Okay they use Michael Jackson, I know his history but even McAuley Culkin didn't point him out, like come on at this point you'd think he would have by now if was true. And you also would assume Jackson would have tried something if that was his deal. Maybe I'm sympathetic to Jackson, I do hope none of it's true of course. But Culkin stayed there and not one bit from him. (Yes I know how that can work don't try and learn me thank you, I try and take all things as needed as experienced). Just for some reason (okay after watching him game on a YouTube with semi popular at best rating) thought Culkin was more honest with things. Plus we always watch home alone so that does skew my per perception but I still think modern day seems like an honest one. As much as my perception sucks of people and I get taken in by scams, learned and all from previous.
