Hostile powers sending spies to west’s universities, says former security chief
Canadian expert David Vigneault warns of China’s ‘industrial-strength’ attempts to steal new technologies
Hostile spy agencies are now as focused on infiltrating western universities and companies as they are on doing so to governments, according to the former head of Canada’s intelligence service.
David Vigneault warned that a recent “industrial-scale” attempt by China to steal new technologies showed the need for increased vigilance from academics.
“The frontline has moved, from being focused on government information to private sector innovation, research innovation and universities,” he told the Guardian in his first interview since leaving the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), which is part of the “Five Eyes” intelligence sharing alliance with the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Hundreds of works were damaged at the Louvre in Paris when a pipe burst because of flooding, the museum’s deputy general administrator said. The flooding led to a burst pipe and affected one of the three rooms of the library in the Egyptian antiquities department, he said.
Above are paragraphs 1 and 3 from the referenced article.
A simple but logical reading of both states that "a flood occurred (first), and the flood is what caused the pipe to burst (second)". Extremely disappointed in this level of journalistic competence.

Well, there's nothing we can do.
How about paying a living wage for human writers who actually give a damn about the integrity of the end product?
Like I said, there is nothing whatsoever that we could possibly do about this...

I don't think it's AI. It looks like bad human writing. An AI wouldn't use clunky non-idiomatic phrases like this:
He noted that the area of the pipe break is part of museum spaces that will undergo a major renovation...
Also, A LLM would be unlikely to say a flood led to a burst pipe when it has lots of examples of writing where the causation is the other way round. A human having a brain fart might make that mistake though.
I suspect this article was written in a hurry by someone whose English isn't great.

Good gravy! I was giving NBC at least a little credit for trying to do mediocre journalism.
I know English is not everyone's first (or even second) language, but if your job is writing for a living in English at least get some help.
P.S. I only know one language myself and couldn't read/write/speak/understand any other to save my soul, so I think people that can are really gifted. It's just that NBC obviously didn't care about this article in the least.

Yes, the new name, X is stupid. It's now the Nazi platform X, accept that and stop using the Nazi platform. Your line in the sand is way further back than it should be, you can't keep using the platform and insist you're giving the finger to Elon by calling it Twitter.

I do not care if you keep a facebook account open just to talk to your dear aunt Ethel over the holidays but PLEASE, Lemmy lefties... speaking directly at you right now.
DO NOT KEEP USING TWITTER.
When you use twitter you generate views for other things, those views translate into monetary rewards for people in other countries who have been paid to destabilize your country. You are not saving anyone, you're not helping anyone. It's a half-dead platform that empowers some of the worst people in the world.
"But people use it in other countries to organize resistance and several other excuses that make me sound addicted!"
I do not care. They have other means. You're not a revolutionary. Just put it away and spend that scrolling time walking and meeting people and reading about local progressive candidates in your area you can back and support and actually make a fucking difference instead of trying to get your twitter arguments clipped and shared on reddit.

I do care. Aunt ethel got used to twitter, she got used to facebook, she got used to messenger when they forced that switch... she can get used to signal/matrix/xmpp or whatever else you desire.
"I'm addicted to being an online asshole" is a tricky one for me to muster sympathy for in the cockles of my heart.

Great, so now any ad from the EC we know is either a scam or propaganda.

Cool, then fuckjng get some balls and block Twitter altogether.
See how quickly they rolled over when Brazil blocked them and they realized everyone was moving to Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon, giving lots of other people the same idea.
I assure you, this is not an irrational fear.
A year or so ago, the only German political party with a major presence on tik tok was the afd, a far-right to extremist party.
They still dominate an enormous share of political discourse on this platform. Arguably thanks to help from the platforms creator, but also because they were uncontested. The platform most teenagers use.
If you think the presence of other groups would have changed that, you don't understand how the algorithms of commercial social networks work. Twitter is actively promoting far-right content, and believing that occupying that space will change it is absurd; it only legitimizes it through institutional accounts.
It's as if in the 1930s the communist party had actively participated in radio stations or newspapers affiliated with the Nazi party.

A law is a law, a ban is a ban. JFC.
And no they won't go away if all they can do is post ads JFC.
JFC I have to be more specific? A law that defines allowable products is a law. A ban is a ban. If you want to ban a COMPANY that's a ban on the COMPANY. not a LAW that defines allowable products.
Do you seriously think a company that has to adjust something just throws their arms up and says "Oh I guess we're banned"? When the EU required USB-C ports did Apple just say "fuck I guess we're banned, we'll withdraw from the EU and lose all that revenue" or did they just put in a USB-C port. JFC. That law did not ban Apple the COMPANY.
JFC I'm leaving this conversation.
This by itself should be enough to have Twitter banned, at least temporarily.
You don't just get to retaliate for getting fined for breaking the law. That's how you upgrade a fine to a prison sentence if you're a regular person.

Feds forcibly yank woman in medical scrubs from car as she screams she's a US citizen
Federal authorities conducting immigration enforcement in Florida were seen pulling a woman wearing medical scrubs from her vehicle as she shouted that she was a U.S. citizen.David Edwards (Raw Story)
I'm a massage therapist 😄
The preceding conversation taught me that scrub-wearing people who work in hospitals don't wear their scrubs outside the facility & don't have to wash them themselves, they leave their scrubs at work and there's a separate crew responsible for scrubs laundry.
My life is not like that.
The worst filth my scrubs ever encounter are my own body sweat & occasional massage lotion mishaps.
If I'm being honest, yes, I think I do feel that $1,200,000 a year is a lot of money to be making as a massage therapist. Even after taxes. Heck, it's a lot of money to be making as a CEO of a company. You could retire very early with a salary like that.
Don't get me wrong, people feel good after getting a massage, but it's not like it's necessary to survive.
I understand you work hard and feel like work effort should equate financial reward, but ultimately it's the usefulness or utility or result/feeling of the service that's being paid for, not the effort it took to provide it.
If we're talking about the cost to you of providing the service, that's different. If the cost is super high for you to be able to give massages, then you have expenses that need to be paid, and massages become a premium luxury service. But even I can afford a massage now and again because it "only" takes human labour. (I'm just guessing what it "takes". No offense! Again, I understand you work your ass off, don't get me wrong here.)
But yeah, sadly, prices are determined by the demand, I guess. What are people willing to pay for a thing, you know.
We all feel like we "deserve" to make a billion dollars before 35 and retire early and live our best life in our best years. But ultimately nobody deserves anything but a chance at happiness and a healthy life. Just a chance, mind you. That's my opinion. 😅
I'm a software developer helping big, big companies save millions of dollars probably every year. Do I get a cut off those savings? No. The company I consult for does. But I don't know if I deserve to either. I get paid what I need to have a good life. I can properly support my family, eat proper, healthy, homemade food, have a nice car, etc.
But do I deserve more? Why would I be worth more than someone else? It doesn't take a lot of physical effort. But a lot of mental effort! Is that worth less? Mental stress? Ruining my body and life expectancy by sitting for hours every single day? Is that something that's worth more than other types of work?
I don't know if I have answers to these questions. I don't know if I can just put a number on what I'm really "worth". All I know is what I want.
Anyway, this is long and wandering into philosophical land, so I'll cut it here for now. 😅
I work to complete exhaustion of my body & mind & soul EVERY FUCKING DAY. People drain my very SOUL and ALL my muscles. Do you think there should not be a high value placed on that?? I give my absolute ALL to appreciative repeat customers, and you think that's not worth a living wage?
What is your opinion of massage therapists?
Maybe you think massage therapists are only worth pennies because perhaps you have some stereotypical perception of submissive Asian ladies who you can't communicate with due to language barrier, so they don't talk and they were raised with a slave work ethic mindset. Hell they might even be trafficking slaves who barely get paid because they're illegally massaging without licences.
Yesterday I had to renew my bi-annual massage license which cost $330 which is 2-3 days of net pay for me. That hurt a lot because I'm still trying to pay off my credit card after getting new belts on my vehicle & rear differential service & brake fluid exchange & coolant flushing & pinion seal repair & new key fob all at once which cost $4700, and I fucking LIVE in this car because my job doesn't pay me enough to afford rent or mortgage anywhere.
I'm a Caucasian American girl who grew up surrounded by millionaires and I paid $10k out of my own pocket to graduate from an accredited massage school in Falls Church Virginia near where the Kennedy family lived during Kennedy's presidency. I eat clean & exercise hard & painstakingly maintain my mesomorphic 104 lb tiny frame. Jaws drop & heads turn whenever I walk by people, and they know I work hard for all this. And I know my value.
I give my all to my job, my body-mind-soul yet they do not pay me enough to live comfortably. They pay me enough to live in my car and buy enough food to survive.

Okay, that's not what I said. Of course you should be paid a living wage for the work that you do. Especially the time that you put in. Time is the most valuable thing IMO, because we only have a certain amount of it in life. And I have two kids I'd like to spend as much time with as I can before they grow up, so I can definitely feel the time-is-money aspect.
To me, it sounds like you don't really like this work very much? If it drains you as much as you vehemently expressed, and it doesn't pay you enough to even have a home to live in, why do you do it? I wouldn't do it. 😐
What is your opinion of massage therapists?
I have no opinion one way or another regarding massage therapists, specifically. I've never gone and had a massage before. My sister-in-law is a certified massage therapist, but works as a district nurse. She's nice. I like her. 🤷♂️🙂
Maybe you think massage therapists are only worth pennies because perhaps you have some stereotypical perception of submissive Asian ladies who you can't communicate with due to language barrier, so they don't talk and they were raised with a slave work ethic mindset.
Wow. What? No. Let's pump the brakes here. That didn't even cross my mind. I was very positive about your profession from the start, remember?
Hell they might even be trafficking slaves who barely get paid because they're illegally massaging without licences.
Holy hell. I hope not.

Yeah, that is awful. What is it they say? Everyone is one medical issue or car repair away from financial ruin? It's an awful situation. Especially when your workplace or clients don't pay you enough to make a living. I'm really sorry you are in that predicament. ❤️
$330 which is 2-3 days of net pay for me
I did some fast math on that, and that got me to about $27 per client on average? Is that about right? That sounds absolutely disgustingly low. A massage where I live is like $50–70 for 30 minutes, I believe. You'd have around $950–1,000 a day with that kind of price. That's more than what I make as a software developer consultant, which are notoriously more expensive than regular employees. So that should be a very good salary to aim for, IMO. You could buy a house in the city by yourself with that kind of money where I live.
But like. You want $1,000 per client. Which would be $5,000 a day. That's a lot. A lot lot. Realistically. I understand housing prices can be ridiculous in some cities around the world. Are you maybe in one of those types of places where you need $5,000 a day to live in a small apartment and eat proper meals? Maybe somewhere in LA or something? 😬
I— I don't know the relevancy of all those details, especially your race. Are you saying that because you're Caucasian and have a mesomorphic body type, and that you're tiny, that you are worth more? I hope that's not what you're saying.
What I do imagine is that growing up "surrounded by millionaires" might not grant someone with the best perception of the value of a dollar? So maybe since all the people around you had millions of dollars you also expect to be paid in the millions every year? As a massage therapist?
I grew up with my single mom, we didn't have much. I wanted something, I'd have to save up, or wait for Christmas and maybe get that thing. Maybe a birthday. We lived small. My mom managed to move us to a house that's like two houses/homes in one shared building, kind of half-half split down the middle with an internal wall. That's when I had already spent half my time living with her before moving out. Anyway. I grew up knowing the value of money. I'm very frugal. Keeping close tabs on all my expenses compared to my income. Knowing the value of money, yadda yadda.
I give my all to my job, my body-mind-soul yet they do not pay me enough to live comfortably. They pay me enough to live in my car and buy enough food to survive.
On this, I am fully on your side. They need to pay you enough for you to be able to live in an apartment at least. That is completely unacceptable. At least if you work full-time with this. That's crazy, and I would definitely find other work if I were you. That's nonsense salary, in all honesty. I hope it works out better for you, because you do deserve to have a home and a life.
Maybe open up your own place, if possible? 🥲
I'm really glad you took it in this way. I'm happy to have given you something to think about and to bring something positive to you, if that's what happened. ❤️
Hey, I have smaller problems than you and I'm stressed af too, so I can only imagine. You never know what people are going through.
Take care!

This is America. We have no conscience left to shock.
Everyone is waiting for the aha moment where we'll finally arouse the long dormant inner decency of the masses of this country and we'll all rise up against the evil that has made its home here but it never comes.
It will not keep going forever. A few decades longer at best.
The climate will end all other plans. Be sure of it.
Those plans may change to something worse, but the status quo of people being weak and complacent will end, by by force of nature. Will that mean revolution? Who cares. It will be too late. It is too late.
They've been convinced that their suffering is the result of minorities and not rich people.
Kind of like how Democrats have been convinced that their suffering is the result of racists and not rich people.
The Alleged Drug Boat Wasn’t Even Heading to the U.S.: Report
A new, disturbing detail in the “drug boat” controversy that has enveloped Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the past week calls the purpose of the entire operation into question.
According to an exclusive report from CNN, the alleged narco-trafficking boat that the U.S. military targeted on September 2 in a “double tap” strike, which killed 11 people, wasn’t even heading to the U.S.
Navy Admiral Frank “Mitch” Bradley, who was in charge of the operation, reported to lawmakers that the boat they struck was actually en route to link up with a larger boat that was heading to Suriname, a country east of Venezuela, two sources with direct knowledge of his remarks said.
Bradley also said that it was still possible that the alleged drug shipment could have eventually ended up in the U.S., the sources told CNN—rather dubious justification for a strike that left several people dead.
The Alleged Drug Boat Wasn’t Even Heading to the U.S.: Report
This new detail eviscerates Pete Hegseth’s argument. The New Republic
We are all upset but ww have no political mechanism in place that gives the people a voice in government.
Oh, the senate and house of gerrymandered districts? That represents the people who gerrymandered the districts. The president? He represents the randos who pick him the "electoral college". And he has dementia. The judicial? They just want a big boat or their religious views to be the ones we follow, they represent themselves.
I feel like "we the people" should vote daily by phone so we could actually have a voice. Who should see the votes? Everyone. Us, them, the world.
If the idiots in charge destroy a boat and the people's vote immediately turns negative, then they should not do that. If we go to war and our vote is positive, then yeah let's keep going to war.
Sick comeback. I'd forgotten about that.
First-past-the-post needs to go
This is a bad position to hold. You're basing your stance on something that most people won't believe, and is probably wrong, when it doesn't even matter. It being a drug smuggling boat does not make it legal, so don't even discuss that.
It does look exactly like what a drug smuggling boat would look like though, and this statement seems to corroborate that. It's likely it is a drug boat, so you're just going to be dismissed by everyone. It's illegal either way. Argue that point.
No, there is a specific type of boat that's used. They are long thin boats usually with multiple motors (sometimes four or five). They will have containers, usually drums, in the middle section. They are built for maximum speed.
Technically a civilian could be using one of these perfectly legally. They are not fishing boats or anything like that though. The fuel would cost far too much to be worth it. They could be speed boats I guess for fun, but you still have to explain the cargo. I don't know what else it could be, and, again, it doesn't matter. It's illegal to destroy them (especially killing the shipwrecked) no matter what.
Yeah, who likes going fast anyways? I would bet everything in my pockets that most of the drugs in this country come in on regular container ships with the rest of the freight, and long skinny ass-haulers with multiple outboards are the default toy of wealthy Floridians since time immemorial. I can extrapolate that to Venezuela a lot easier than I can dream up a scenario where it makes sense to ship fent precursors over from China and run a bunch of pills up the coast on speedboats. Talk to a cop or a junkie, whichever fits your politics. Either one will tell you that's just not how it works
edited to leave this completely unrelated pic here, no reason
Yeah, who likes going fast anyways?
If you like going fast you don't build a vessel like this. You dint need to carry cargo if you're just going fast. You need to explain what the cargo is if you want to pretend like they aren't drug boats. They aren't fishing boats, and other cargo doesn't need to be transported like this, and it isn't fuel efficient so it must be something that can't take other routes.
I would bet everything in my pockets that most of the drugs in this country come in on regular container ships with the rest of the freight...
I'm not making any claim about where most of the drugs come in. How does that have anything to do with the conversation. Even if it is true, it doesn't mean these aren't drug boats.
I can extrapolate that to Venezuela a lot easier than I can dream up a scenario where it makes sense to ship fent precursors over from China and run a bunch of pills up the coast on speedboats.
It's not fentanyl. IIRC, most of that comes in through Mexico, but I might be wrong about that. I believe it's mostly cocaine coming through Venezuela.
Again, this doesn't matter. The fact we're having this discussion proves my point. It's better to just talk about the legality. It being a drug boat doesn't make it a legal target. Why even bring that into the discussion. All it'll ever do is distract from the actual crimes being committed.
Just to be clear, I'm a leftist (anarchist). I'm very against this administration, and I'm also generally pro legalization of any drug. That doesn't mean I need to be stupid and pretend drugs aren't being smuggled. There's a hell of a lot of evidence ships like these, and others, have been used to smuggle drugs. Technically all of that could have been staged, but I doubt it. There are drugs being smuggled through Venezuela and you'd have to be very ignorant to think that isn't happening. Hell, there are drugs being smuggled through the US. None of that has anything to do with these acts being illegal though, so don't shoot yourself in the foot by arguing about it.
Edit: On the image you posted, in case this makes you think I'm more reasonable, this is a comment I made a while back: lemmy.zip/comment/23085761
I agree with you it's bad. However, drugs are being smuggled. This isn't really something that can be denied. It's happening everywhere all the time. It just isn't relevant. It's illegal no matter what, even if these are drug smugglers or not.
the country holds the world’s largest proven oil reservesYeah, just like that time, the excuse given is almost certainly bullshit.
Venezuela has the world’s most oil: Why doesn’t it earn more from exports?
Venezuela holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves, more than five times more than the United States.Mohammed Haddad (Al Jazeera)
That's not what they looked like. Here's some of these boats:
Notice it's not really built for comfort. There's no cover for the pilot or passengers, and there's a large cargo area. It's very different than what a civilian boat looks like.
Anyway, I don't know how many times I have to say this. It being a drug boat or not doesn't make it legal to destroy. It doesn't justify anything whether it's a drug boat or not. It's just a lot easier to convince people of the right thing if you don't start from crazy conspiracies. There are drugs being smuggled. This isn't a secret. Arguing that there aren't drugs being smuggled makes you sound equally as reasonable as someone saying that aliens actually blew up those boats. There's a lot of evidence to the contrary that needs to be explained.
Fine, keep arguing these aren't. Whatever. How they fuck do you explain narco subs? It's either cartels building them to smuggle drugs, or nations building them and filling them with drugs as some massive conspiracy to manufacture consent against drug cartels, and no one has spoken out yet. It's much more likely the former.
It's not an attack on America. It's just people making money. No shit there's no excuse. That's literally what I've been saying. Drug boats or not, it isn't legal or moral.
Thailand launches airstrikes on Cambodia as Trump’s peace agreement hangs in balance
Thailand launched airstrikes against Cambodia on Monday as a new wave of fighting erupted between the southeast Asian neighbors, marking the potential collapse of a peace plan presided over by Donald Trump just two months ago.
Both sides accused the other of launching strikes along their disputed border Monday morning, after weeks of simmering tension and the earlier suspension of progress on the ceasefire agreement by Thailand.

The countries were at peace before something caused them to escalate into a war. You can't just declare that a war has ended by having a representative from each side sign a piece of paper and expect it to remain this way without addressing the root causes that lead to said war to begin with.
But trying to understand the situation and finding ways to address those root causes requires far more work than Trump can be bothered with. He only cares about giving the impression that he did something.
As usual, Trump has an overly simplistic view of the problem to match his abysmal level of understanding of it, and proposes equally simplistic solutions to it. He then declares he fixed it because of how much of a genius he is and then ignores the evidence that it didn't work.
Pro-Israel candidate Kast, son of Nazi official, wins Chilean presidential elections
Far-right, pro-Israel candidate José Antonio Kast will become the next president of Chile after winning the second-round voting on Sunday with 60% of the votes.
Son of a former Nazi official, Kast will replace a Chilean administration led by Gabriel Boric, a vocal critic of Israel and the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to the point of stopping diplomatic relations months after the October 7 attacks.
Kast was one of the main opponents of Boric’s foreign affairs policy, and promised during his campaign that he “would rectify the mistakes made by Boric,” which he called “whims” and “tantrums” on more than one occasion.
“Chile's foreign relations are too relevant to prioritize the whims of a President over the interests of the Nation. An Apple fan says they lost '20 years of digital life' after using an Apple gift card
An Apple fan who has spent “nearly 30 years as a loyal customer” says they’ve been “permanently” locked out of their Apple Account due to what might be the overzealous actions of Apple’s automated anti-fraud system. It’s left them locked out of “20 years of digital life,” and it all started with the seemingly straightforward purchase of an Apple gift card.
India to open up its Nuclear Sector for Private Companies. Is this really what it claims to be?

Summary and My opinions on this news. Its kinda long but its really about my country and I wanted to open up a bit so please don't mind. You can just read the news if you want to:-Cabinet under the Leadership of PM Modi has greenlit the SHANTI Bill (Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India).
PM Modi and the Cabinet claims that it will end the long lasted monompoly of NPCIL in Nuclear Sector and will promote innovations in nuclear sector and help India in achieving its target of 100GW energy through nuclear sector by 2047. India currently produces 8,880 megawatts energy from currently operational 25 nuclear reactors, 17 more are currently under construction which will help India achieve 22,000 megawatts of energy by 2032.
This bill is said to consolidate fragmented laws, Plug regulatory laws etc. It is shown as a framework to boost India's true nuclear potential. It is slated for tabling in upcoming Monday or tuesday of next week.
This bill mainly modernises the current Atomic Energy Act 1962. According to the new proposals it grants entry of private players in activities regarding this sector such as atomic mineral exploration, fuel fabrication, equipment manufacturing, and select plant operations after verified licensing and approval.
To uphold the new rules and regulations, a new independent Nuclear safety authority will be made which will overview the operations and safety in this sector and is said to ensure International Standards.
To further lure private investments the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act has been revised and many goverenment gaurantees will be offered.
The goverenment body of NPCIL for this sector targets 50% of this 100GW target, so the other 50GW is free for Private sectors to dominate.
So far, this idea seems good. I, from the start have showed this bills positives and negatives in my previous posts as well.
As long as rules and regulations are upholded (Which is not always the case) this is a good intiative. We know how sloppy goverenment bodies are, and the private sector should not be restricted from this sector if India wants to grow, but also, this should be ensured that no single private company monopolises this sector, small comapnies should also be promoted in this sector by additional benefits and the nuclear authority, rather than only upholding rules, should also ensure fair competition so that small companies are not eaten up by the new ones.
We should also propose a Standard Technology Criteria for this sector which should be set up by goverenment and should clearly state atleast the minimum level of technology required for energy production in this sector and should be revised in every 20-30 years on average with changing times and new technologies should be added. Not just that, in such sitauations when the transformation from one gen tech to another gen tech is being conducted, the Goverenment should monetarily support Small Private players in this sector for smooth transformation and so that they don't lag behind others. These were my opinions.

Signal installation in a Distrobox
Signal only provides a script for .deb based distros on their official website. The flatpak is currently not ideal because it stores encryption keys in plaintext.
The provided link suggests an automated installation in a Ubuntu Distrobox including automated updates. Useful for every distro that does not natively support .deb packages.

Beta test the Signal Desktop Linux AppImage 🐧
Hi everyone, We have exciting news for Linux users! We’re planning to package Signal Desktop in the AppImage format, so that it will be officially available on all Linux distributions and not just Debian-based ones.Signal Community
it literally prompts you to enable it and is just one command. I get Linux can be hard, but setting up an entire distrobox just to avoid entering the single command.
Also the only reason it's experimental is because you have to enter that command manually, not because it's any less safe.
Yeah unfortunately i can't quite recall the context, but I think they were attempting to make encrypted storage the default, but then that broke on existing databases or something? It was a pain at least, I know that much 😅
(Although would be less of a pain nowadays, now that Signal has proper sync to restore my history.)
Edmonton sees record increase in frostbite amputations, despite innovative treatment
Like many Albertans at this time of year, Louis Francescutti is thinking about the weather.
“The snow fell last night, so temperatures are well below zero,” said the Edmonton emergency physician.
“As we speak, there are probably men and women out there developing frostbite right now. And so my colleagues probably later today or tomorrow will start treating this year’s round of frostbites.”
“About two to three weeks ago, I saw two patients that had infected amputation sites from last year’s frostbite,” said Francescutti.
“In other words, we are still dealing with frostbite from a year ago. And now these men and women are still homeless and chances are they’re going to reinjure themselves again.”

In debates and at the doors, public safety and homelessness seem to be top of mind for Edmonton residents and municipal candidates alike. While this dialogue is welcome, it leaves out the people most impacted — the nearly 5,000 people in Edmonton who are living unhoused. As a result, many fail to recognize the simple truth that most of our neighbours we see on the street have nowhere to go. Too few Edmontonians are aware that a tidal wave of recent funding cuts and closures has wiped the city’s daytime drop-in spaces off the map

“What we need in this city is not just affordable housing, as in housing that's 80 per cent of market value,” said Strikwerda. “We need social housing that's geared to income.”
I took a drive downtown yesterday during the day. Homeless are laid down on the concrete sidewalks with blankets. There were some nasty -20C and worse days in Edmonton. The UCP don't care, neither did EPS under McFee, and I point out the silence from Edmonton Police on the subject.
There are many reasons why people may not go to a shelter even when space is available, such as feeling unsafe due to past experience.A controversial practice in both Edmonton and Calgary has been to dismantle tents and homeless encampments. Both cities confirmed that policy will continue this winter, citing safety concerns.
“When the city responds to an encampment, we do not simply ‘take it down,’” said a statement from a City of Calgary spokesperson.
“Our teams engage directly with occupants and ensure they are offered safe, warm alternatives before any structure is removed. No encampment is dismantled without providing support and connections to appropriate services and shelter options. The goal is always to reduce harm, prevent exposure to the elements, and create a safer outcome than if someone remained outdoors.”

Claude CLI deleted someone home directory and wiped his Mac
Source: Reddit Post.
Claude CLI deleted my entire home directory! Wiped my whole mac.
I was having the Claude CLI clean up my packages in an old repo, and it nuked my whole Mac! What the hell? Has anyone ever had this happen? I’m trying to figure out if this is even reversible. So much work lost..
CLAUDE response - I found the problem and it's really bad. Looking at your log, here's the catastrophic command that was run:
bash
rm -rf tests/ patches/ plan/ ~/See that \~/ at the end? That's your entire home directory. The Claude Code instance accidentally included \~/ in the deletion command, which would wipe out:
- Your entire Desktop (\~/Desktop)
- Documents, Downloads, everything
- Your Keychain (\~/Library/Keychains)
- Claude credentials (\~/.claude)
- Application support data
- Basically everything in /Users/...
This explains why:
- Your desktop is gone
- Your keychain was deleted
- Your Claude credentials disappeared
- The error at the end says "current working directory was deleted"
