All this crunch just to still not have made a good game since 2004.
in reply to Ricky Rigatoni

You can hate them. You can, personally, dislike their games. But to pretend like The Last of Us doesn't fall under every definition of a "good game" is just being willfully obtuse.

Like, I don't personally like racing games, but I'm not going to smugly claim that games like Forza aren't good. I'd have to really like the smell of my own farts to make that claim.

They don't seem nearly as good as people claim though. I can't comment on their quality with certainty because I didn't play any of them besides Crash Bandicoot but at least their newer games seem very unimpressive to me.

What the hell was that excuse in the quote?

"We tried to tell our employees not to work on sundays, and then one guy told us once he couldn't work on that friday and that he'd prefer to work on sunday!"

This is absolute bad faith, it has nothing to do with resorting to crunch. You may make your schedules more flexible, for convenience. It's nice, but it's comparatively not a huge deal.

Problem is when you're making your employees work 12-hour days or a whole week with no rest day. Making it sound like one anecdote is ruining all your attempts to have an healthy work schedule is insulting to everyone.

Recommendations for an easy-to-use no frills NAS?

I have an old QNAP and I hate it. It's full of proprietary software that can't be removed, and is slow, probably because it doesn't have SSDs. It's, I think, RAID1.

Basically just need something to back up my data on my local network that has encryption. Open source is always nice as well. Simple and fast!

Have you used it? Better yet, is there a NAS you can get with it preinstalled?

in reply to Alas Poor Erinaceus

I tried it briefly, but I wanted docker integration. I don't think it comes preinstalled anywhere. I had built my own nas with some old PC parts and a bunch of new drives.
in reply to Alas Poor Erinaceus

I recall hearing that there's a Debian install for Qnap devices. I've been considering reimaging an old Qnap with Debian and Minio for backups.

I will be eligable as soon as I do my 2025 taxes.

My daughter is already enrolled.

The insurance companies just hate this. Now a $100 tooth extraction will no longer cost $700 plus a $100 referral fee which, don't worry, you'll get back.

debian 13.2 with yt-dlp 2025.12.08 from yt-dlp/yt-dlp. What command do I need to download the newest format available, not exceeding 1080p and up to VP9?

newest / best format would be AV1, but my computer doesn't support it completely. VP9 is completely supported.

the command I've been using: yt-dlp -f bv*[ext=mp4]+ba[ext=m4a]/b[ext=mp4] -S height:1080 --all-subs --no-warnings -v https://www.youtube.com/watchx

this command downloads the best available video up to 1080p, but if the best video format available is AV1, it will download it. I need a command that downloads the best video but up to VP9.

Help appreciated.

in reply to arsus5478

Honestly, AV1 software decode isn’t that bad on most recent hardware. My desktop with 2018 hardware does it just fine, and so does my 2023 laptop.
in reply to data1701d (He/Him)

I learned the VP9 sort after I saw how randomly abysmal the encoding is for AV1.

Just look at these numbers:

and a direct comparison, same frame from AV1:

and then VP9:
