Sound Blaster Recon3Di S/PDIF No Output
Greetings,
I've installed Fedora Linux (with pipewire) on my friend's Alienware M17xR4 (linux-hardware probe).
This incredible laptop got a Sound Blaster Recon3Di with a S/PDIF Digital Output which unfortunally does not work out of the box. I can see the vu meter moving inside gnome-control-center but no audio comes out and the port's red light (which on Windows lights up) does not turn on at all.
By lookin up I've found this thread on Linux Mint Forums but I had no luck with it.
Has anyone else got issues with similar hardware? Thanks in advance.
HW probe of Alienware M17xR4 #32183f94dc
A database of all the hardware that works under linuxlinux-hardware.org
By selecting "HDA Intel PCH" card with F6, this is what I see:
The S/PDIF isn't muted but its level isn't shown (like is shown for Master and PCM). Could this because of profile in use from pavucontrol or is it something related to alsamixer?
By unmuting "HP/Speaker" the light turns on finally.
By unmuting "HP/Speaker Auto Detect" too, the light turns off again.
As soon as I can, I will try to play something thru it and will report.
Ty!

Edit:
While the light is on, audio still does not come out.
Maybe I should try now to change profile on pavucontrol.
I'll take a look.
Just tried PopOS live and it works out of the box, but I would like to understand why and fix it on Fedora.
Take a look at my other comment for screenshots.
what does this mean for Flatpak?
should i be worried installing these two? what does it mean though?

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! It's very clear and you're so good expressing yourself! And don't worry for your post accidentally being posted half-way, it happened to me too, in fact there's a deleted comment in this thread, for your same reason 😂
Anyway, I definitely must try this tablet. I am skeptical as you were, but I must give it a shot since you've had such a nice and productive experience. I might find out a store where I can try it or, alternatively, I might ask a friend of mine, who likes to draw, because she maybe has a tablet like this (that you connect to the computer).
Thank you again for your suggestions!
In order to avoid to spam too much here, may I contact you privately?
Make sure to check the return policy for Wacom or whichever reseller you end up going with. Some allow you to return electronic devices (if in good state, of course) up to 30 days or so after the purchase. If that isn't possible, you can always try to resell it in the second-hand market and make most of your money back, there are plenty of websites for that (from global ones like ebay to regional platforms; I tend to prefer the latter). But if your friend has one of these (or similar) give it a try!
And yeah, feel free to reach out to me via Matrix or e-mail! You can also try other platforms listed in my website, but I don't check those as often.

P2P Messaging and State Management: Todo List Demo.
a decentralized P2P todo list app to to demo the P2P framework used in the chat app.
github.com/positive-intentions…
a wrapper around peerjs. peerjs is good, but it can become complicated to use on complicated projects. This implementation is an attempt to create something like a framework/guideline for decentralized messaging and state management.
positive-intentions.github.io/…
how it works:
1. crypto-random ids are generated and used to connect to peerjs-server (to broker a webrtc connection)
2. peer1 shares this ID to another browser/tab/person (use the storybook props)
3. peers are then automatically connected.
4. add todo item
5. edit todo item
There are several things here to improve like:
- general cleanup throughout (its early stage for this project and missing all the nice things like good-code and unit-tests)
- adding extra encryption keys for messages comming in and going out (webrtc mandates encryption already)
- handling message callbacks
- key rotation

I'm sure various factors affect any projects maturity.
I work on the project because I have a curiosity and the ability to try. Compared to other project, a webapp is pretty easy to get started on as a developer.

My point is that the funding is optional and you can track all of Purism's efforts via their Gitlab instance.
I agree that you don't have fine-tuned control on what they should focus on. But I'm also not convinced users need to have this control.
Obviously it's more transparent when you donate to individual developers manually instead of going through a company. I don't disagree with that.
But in my terms it's still an improvement.
I sincerely hope that this goes to the moon and back. Both for selfish reasons (I love my L5 but I really want Crimson) but also just for the Linux phone ecosystem.
Mobian and PostmarketOS are doing wonderful work, though.
Home assistant thermostat
Hi. Thermostats are expensive. I currently have this one, at my apartment.
I would like to replace it with one that connects to HA.
First, is this a good idea since I'm in an apartment? I'll obviously keep the current one, and put it back before leaving.
Second, what's a good one that is either open source or at least non internet based (but still works on HA)?
Thanks!

It's fairly simple actually, the basic idea is to create multiple desktops from a single host; fully HW accelerated and isolated from each other. So for example I could stream a game to my couch TV whilst someone else is playing a different game on the very same computer.
Personally I use this on my homelab: the same machine that has got Jellyfin (and other containers) installed can share the GPU with Wolf so that I can both transcode with HW acceleration when needed and play a game or open up a remote desktop all from one single machine.
State of Text Rendering 2024
[The author assumes] a high-level understanding of how text rendering works, for example, what shaping is. If that does not sound familiar to you, you might want to review State of Text Rendering (2009), and Modern text rendering with Linux: Overview (2019).

That is interesting. WASM seems like it's just a replacement for the TrueType hinting language (which is already a VM). So I guess it's benefiting from a more standardised and audited virtual machine.
It's also fairly limited to what it can do (source):
you can influence the process of mapping a string of characters into an array of glyphs, you can determine how those glyphs are positioned and their advance widths, but you cannot manipulate outlines, variations, line breaks, or affect text layout between texts of different font, variation, language, script or OpenType feature selection
I don't see how the mentioned future drawing API will fit into that though.

If not Google, it'd probably be Bing, or some other extremely wealthy company trying to get something out of Mozilla.
Every time Mozilla has tried to diversify their income, people complain about them trying to make money/commercialise. I mean I don't like it either, but they're in a tough spot.
They're seen as evil bastards if they take money, and they're seen as evil bastards when they try to make money.
At least with Google there's a possible antitrust case if they suddenly pulled funding, given their market position, and that gives Mozilla a bit more leverage than I think they'd get with other deals.

in reply to petsoi • • •I'm a longtime Thunderbird user and don't get all the changes they make. It's a good functional client. I would rather want to see the parts not neccessary needed for an email client to able to disable, such as Calendar, Tasks and Chat. I use the RSS Reader, so that News REader functionality would be on for me. But can't we disable all the other modules?
This and an first party integrated system tray icon showing number of unread messages would be extremely helpful (and maybe optional notifications). I'm baffled why these things are not builtin, but a Chat?
boredsquirrel
in reply to thingsiplay • • •I would be in favor of having these things as modules you can compile in or leave out.
Addons would not be possible as they probably do too much stuff.
100% on the notifications, tray icons dont matter, but working desktop notifications are a must and it is insane that they dont work.
thingsiplay
in reply to boredsquirrel • • •Well I don't agree on that tray icons wouldn't matter. They are very useful. But either way, it would be good to have the option for these two very basic and important functionality. On the compile flags, that would even be better, as these modules wouldn't be in the final binary / install anymore.
But I would be just happy if we could turn the modules off in the options, so the actual Thunderbird client is less cluttered, less possibilities of bugs affecting me and lighter on resources. Why not get rid of them entirely and make standalone applications? It would free some development resources too, for the core Thunderbird mail client.
Maybe switching to a lighter alternative is a good idea.
