I januari 2024 stoppades några polispatruller en kvinna i en bil utanför Västerås. De hittade då cirka 50 kilo hasch i bilen. Spår ledde vidare till ett garage i Sala. När polisen undersökte garaget hittade de över 100 kilo hasch gömt i flyttkartonger och lastbilsdäck. Det har nu lett till att två polisanställda är åtalade för grova brott.
Just a quick note to recognize that the first lines of PieFed code were published on the 28th July 2023, just over a year ago. Since then there have been 1400+ changes made by 9 people, involving adding 88,000 lines of code and removing 28,000 lines. The issue queue has 98 open and 99 closed issues.
While join.piefed.social went live in October 2023, it wasn't until time off work over the christmas holidays enabled a big push to get it ready that piefed.social went live on 4th January 2024.
Since then piefed.social has federated 190k posts, 2.3M comments and 19M votes with 1900 other instances of various types. Besides piefed.social there are 5 other PieFed instances that I know of.
What a year it's been! I've grown significantly as a developer, had a lot of fun and hopefully contributed something meaningful to whatever the fediverse is becoming. Long may it continue!

When the Pocket Reform was announced I was immediately intrigued – a smaller form factor, 7 inch full Linux system with open hardware that is easily portable.

I went for the Hyper edition, which came with a beautiful Piñatex sleeve, SSD, and printed manual. Purple, of course, because I want to be on brand 🤓 and, also because I love it!
I posted a very brief unboxing video. I’ve now had a couple of weeks to occasionally tinker, and I’ve been putting off writing about it all in part because there’s a lot of things to dig into!
One of the things I like, surprisingly, is the chunkiness of the machine. It is really well constructed, solid, and feels great. Fits in a small cross-body bag or satchel. It’s less than half the size of a 14 inch MacBook Pro – you can more than fit two of them side by side on top of the Mac – but it is about 3 times thicker – and that’s OK, because, it is in service of making the innards very accessible and user serviceable. It comes with a complete manual and schematic, which is something I’ve not had in a computer since the 8-bit machines of my youth! The top half contains the mainboard and display (all the ports are in the top half), and the bottom contains the battery cells and mechanical keyboard. The upper panel has a copper layer and acts as a large heatsink for the processor module. The keyboard is ortholinear, which means it is a direct grid layout rather than offset row-by-row. It’s the first time I’ve used this format, which – along with the smaller keycaps – has made it a little challenging to learn, but I’m doing pretty well now. The trackball is nice and responsive. The backlit keys are easy to adjust. The screen is excellent – bright, and sharp. Actually I think the screen is probably the aspect that has impressed me most so far.
In terms of ports and connectivity – I’ve yet to hook up to an additional screen via the micro-HDMI connector, but I’ve used the USB-C connections (one of which is used to charge / power the machine), and the micro SD slot. The industrial iX connector for ethernet is likely a good choice for the target niche, and certainly does give more space on the motherboard than an RJ45 socket would… but I’ve yet to put my hands on a passive adapter to enable me to plug in to a wired connection, so it’s currently not as useful to me.
There’s a lot more to talk about, primarily (but not exclusively) on the software side, and also around hardware enablement. Out-of-the-box the Pocket Reform runs Debian unstable from MMC, with some customisations to provide a nice getting started wizard. It is important to point out that this is a machine for hackers and tinkerers – although it works very nicely, it’s not all fully baked in places – for example, the firmware for the system controller (a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip) is being tweaked and tested, and I’ve already tested one update to that. The other day I posted about some issues with an NVMe SSD – that, unfortunately ,was on this machine. I actually think there was a physical hardware issue with the drive, as I’ve now replaced it with a higher-performance NVMe and things are moving along nicely (while the problematic SSD continues to report errors when accessed in an adapter over USB). I also managed to temporarily brick the machine by corrupting the uboot in flash, and needed to rig it up with Dupont wires on headers and access the machine from another via USB to get back to where I wanted to be. Very Open Source! 😎 but, I’m comfortable with this, and knew what I was purchasing. The forums and IRC have proven to be useful so far and I’m enjoying learning as well as hopefully (!?) helping the MNT team through my feedback and bug reports. I have a huge amount of respect for what they have built, their ethos, and their commitment to making this as open hardware as they can.
I should be receiving a modem / WWAN card for the second internal expansion slot shortly. I’ve been both learning the Sway desktop environment and also working out how best to organise my setup, so there will be more to cover in future. I particularly want to play more with the onboard I2C, and other hardware opportunities, as well – for example, potentially swapping in a Raspberry Pi CM4 if that becomes a modular option in the future. andypiper.co.uk/2024/08/06/mnt…

This is a Debian install, and I chose to install the nvme-cli and also the smartmontools packages; util-linux and e2fsprogs were installed by default and contain fsck and also the badblocks tool; blktool and hdparm are potentially also useful. The Arch Wiki seems to be particularly helpful on the nvme tools.
I’m currently booted from an alternate source (an SD card) and attempting to run fsck -fcDy /dev/nvme0n1p1 in an effort to look for bad blocks. I’m still seeing these I/O error messages scroll up the dmesg -w output in a second terminal even though fsck is not obviously telling me that there are problems. Based on my research I’m starting to think that this might be a hardware issue with the drive. This is a bit of an unusual setup for me (ARM64, uBoot is in play with eMMC as well) but fortunately the system is recent, so a clean rebuild is not out of the question…
Fairly sure that I’ll end up getting another M.2 NVMe drive (at least they are relatively cheaper than they used to be), but writing this down for now as I continue to investigate. Fun times…

I contenuti social sono davvero diventati più pesanti e difficili da maneggiare: persino le piattaforme un tempo considerate “frivole” traboccano ormai di aggiornamenti e testimonianze strazianti da crisi locali e globali. Anche la pressione interna è cresciuta: i confronti online sono diventati più aspri, i giudizi incrociati più taglienti; per ottenere maggiore visibilità, conviene trattare da nemico chiunque non abbia la nostra stessa posizione in un dibattito, ma anche chi mostri incertezza sulla posizione da adottare o chi verso quell’incertezza esprima comprensione. Il periodo storico fa la sua parte – ci offre scenari preoccupanti tra catastrofi naturali, orrori artificiali e tensioni sociali – ma la fatica e l’angoscia che proviamo mentre ci facciamo strada nel pozzo dipendono dalle abitudini collettive di consumo mediatico.
La sensazione di assistere, tramite i feed social, a un’apocalisse permanente, che non possiamo materialmente impedire e dalla quale non possiamo moralmente distogliere lo sguardo, è abbastanza diffusa da aver fatto emergere nel 2020 un neologismo per descriverla: doomscrolling. Idea suggestiva, lo “scrolling apocalittico”, e tuttavia autoassolutoria, perché si concentra solo sul nostro ruolo passivo, spettatoriale, mentre è attivo il nostro contributo al sovraccarico di contenuti deprimenti. Vale senz’altro per chi ne pubblica o ne condivide, ma vale anche per chi interagisce con essi o si sofferma a osservarli per più di qualche secondo: basta questo per segnalare all’algoritmo che persone con interessi compatibili coi nostri potrebbero volerli vedere e che noi stessi desideriamo vederne ancora.

Seeing as how I don't like either Gnome or KDE, though I did give KDE a try, I decided to switch to Cinnamon. Yes, that picture looks odd, I'm short on monitors that'll fit on the space I have left on my desk, so I'm using an old Dell with a 4:3 ration thanks to an HDMI to VGA converter. Some how there's dust in the display though, which is really annoying. Not much to say, if'n you've used Linux Mint, this should look rather familiar, it's just lightly customized at this point, it'll get more, and it works as you'd expect. Yes, this is the X11, and you're supposed to use Wayland. Funny thing about that, this is rock solid, whereas with Wayland I had a bunch of silly problems, can't drag tabs in Firefox, menu glitches, and no keyboard customization. General problems are minor, boot is real slow, I mean real slow, and Sat's update broke wireless, but I'm only feet from my gateway, so wired it is. Overall this works real nice, basically Mint running on an M1 iMac.

Last Week in Fediverse – ep 78
Welcome back to another edition of the weekly-ish news of the fediverse. This edition contains the news of last week, as well as some news items from the previous few weeks that I’ve spotted while I was on holiday break. My holiday was indeed fully offline out of the feeds, but I could not resist afterwards to dig in to find out what happened while I was offline.

The News
GoToSocial’s latest release adds comment-controls, which allows people to determine who can reply to their posts. GoToSocial explains: ‘you’ll be able to configure your account so that new posts created by you will have an interaction policy set on them, which determines whether your instance drops or accepts replies, likes, and boosts of your posts, depending on the visibility of the post, and whether or not an account trying to interact with you is in your followers/following list.’
Safety has been a major conversation on the fediverse feeds recently, especially with Black people pointing out the lacking safety tools and major harrassment they experience on the fediverse. One aspect that facilitates the harassment is the default opt-out approach to federation; where racists and other bigots will simply spin up a new fediverse server and send (semi)-private messages with hate speech to Black people. This is why ‘just switch to a server with better moderation’ is such a problematic response; it does not actually fix one of the main ways Black people experience on the fediverse, while placing the onus on them to solve the problem. One interesting response is in building a separate network with ActivityPub based on allow-list federation, and I’m keeping a close eye on how this evolves.
PeerTube’s latest update adds ‘automatic video transcription using Whisper , a new comment policy “requires approval first”, auto-tagging/labelling of videos and comments based on specific rules and a comment moderation page for video publishers’. This blog post provides more details about the development story on adding the transcription feature.
Patchwork is an upcoming plugin system for Mastodon that is developed by Newsmast, that is tentatively scheduled to be released next month. The latest update by Newsmast showcases the variety of plugins that they’ll offer, including setting local-only posts, changing post length, and scheduling posts. The bigger part is also the addition of Channels, custom timelines that will allow external parties to hook into as well.
Some statistics that relate compare the different platforms. A comparison of sources of traffic to news site heise.de, showing how Bluesky has surpassed Mastodon in clicks. A new comparison by Kuba Suder shows the different ways people post on Bluesky that is not done via a PDS that is hosted by Bluesky company. In February this year, Bluesky started support for having people self-host their own Personal Data Server (PDS) that is not managed by their company. The amount of people who do so is small, with less than 100 active account. Significantly more people post onto Bluesky via their bridged ActivityPub account. Speaking of bridged accounts: Eugen Rochko has now bridged his Mastodon account to Bluesky. Rochko has been outspokenly critical of Bluesky in the past, saying that they should adopt ActivityPub instead of building their own protocol.
Some moreupdates by Ghost, who is getting along further with their ActivityPub implementation. The newsletter is now getting better connected to the fediverse, allowing you to follow it directly from your Mastodon account.
Mastodon moves their iOS app development in-house, and is recruiting a full-time iOS app developer. Up until now, the Mastodon iOS app was developed by two freelance developers.
A slightly obscure news update because I love interoperability: Guppe Groups have been around for a while, and are a way to get some semblance of Groups added onto microblogging platforms, functioning similar to hashtags. Now link-aggregator platform PieFed has added support for these types of groups, you can see an example here. I’m mentioning this news here because I think there is a lot more space to experiment with different platform designs that take inspiration from both microblogging, link-aggregators and forums, and this is a small example of it. PieFed added support for community wikis as well.
Bluesky released Starter Packs a month ago as a way to easy the onboarding process, and reactions on the rest of the fediverse were that this was a good idea that could potentially be copied. Statistics show however that the feature has not been actively used by the community. Part of the reason could be that signups to decentralised social networks in general have mostly stopped.
WeDistribute wrote about NeoDB, calling it ‘a review system for culture’. NeoDB is one of the more interesting platforms available in the fediverse, with an incredible wide variety of features. NeoDB themselves describes by drawing comparison to other platforms, saying ‘NeoDB integrates the functionalities of platforms like Goodreads, Letterboxd, RateYourMusic, and Podchaser, among others.’ NeoDB’s own pitch is taking fediverse platforms tendency to be ‘centralised platform concept + ActivityPub’ to the extreme, and I enjoy the simplicity of NeoDB is a fediverse review platform for culture more.

The latest update for software forge Forgejo has foundational parts of ActivityPub based federation, and the first forgejo instances that have federation in some alpha form are starting to appear.
The third party app for Pixelfed Vernissage has been renamed to Impressia. Vernissage is now exclusively the name for the fediverse photo sharing platform that is currently in development by the same developer.

Activitypub.academy is ‘a modified Mastodon instance that allows you to study the ActivityPub protocol in real life’ that has gotten some new features.
In the main Bluesky app, if you block someone and you have a thread in which both you and the blocked account have posted replies, it prevents other people from viewing those posts, which often breaks the thread. This system, the ‘apocalypseblock’ is intentional for Bluesky, but the openness of the protocol allows people to build other thread viewers that do not have this feature.
If you follow any of the #GoToSocial developers you've probably seen this going around already, but 0.17.0 of #GoToSocial will be the first release that includes interaction policies, aka reply-controls.
In the first iteration of this feature, you'll be able to configure your account so that new posts created by you will have an interaction policy set on them, which determines whether your instance drops or accepts replies, likes, and boosts of your posts, depending on the visibility of the post, and whether or not an account trying to interact with you is in your followers/following list.
So for example, you will be able to create Public posts that can only be replied to by your followers and people you follow, or unlisted posts that nobody can reply to or like, etc.
GoToSocial interaction policies will be a superset of other reply control proposals created elsewhere (and already implemented by softwares like Pixelfed and Peertube), so your GoToSocial instance should recognize interaction restrictions set not only by other GoToSocial instances, but by Pixelfed and Peertube as well.

The update for #Mastodon patching the bug in the preview is near, so it's time for a last look at #traffic sources for @heiseonline: #Twitter keeps decreasing and is already overtaken by Mastodon (thx also to problems with our bot for #X, when it works, X brings more people). #Flipboard and #Facebook are growing again, #Bluesky and #Threads are far behind. But Threads brings already more traffic than Bluesky, although we can't autopost (every link) there.

Det enda ni behöver göra är att gå till Spejset (social.spejset,org), Mastodon.nu eller Mastodonsweden.se. Det är tre svenskspråkiga sajter eller instanser som det heter i Fediversum.
