Mastodon 4.3 released

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/21166273
in reply to Otter

Now that 4.3 is done, our focus for the next release will be on implementing the highly requested features of quote posts

OMG, it's actually happening!?

in reply to 👍Maximum Derek👍

I hope not. Had very bad experience with these and toxicity they enabled on Xitter and one of the main reasons why I left it for mastodon quite early. I would much more like to see if they focused on making it possible to also migrate posts when you change an instance/server.
in reply to Jure Repinc

Quote post can be useful if implemented with more control, not just copying existing Twitter quote.

I recall the dev want to let user disable quote on individual post.

in reply to Otter

Awesome update and I'm very excited for their next one. Recommendation algorithms are now a must have if you want to attract younger people to the platform.

in reply to andyburke

Anybody who's not an utter ignoramus knows that burgerland already tried invading Cuba. Not only that but Guantanamo Bay is still under occupation where burgerlanders run a torture camp.

Yeah, I am well aware. The absolute fuckin morons we put in charge as humans can't seem to figure out how not to fuck everything up.

in reply to UlyssesT [he/him]

But don't worry, I'm sure the US with the current administration and the presumptive next administration bragging about how the US is the largest fossil fuel producer of all time also has nothing to do with it.
in reply to PowerCrazy

Burgerland's buying a lot of that soy and beef, too. And mahogany for yuppie furniture.

Mastodon 4.3 released

in reply to Riley

Definitely seeing some people complain about the design changes

The great thing about Mastodon is, that you can freely chose what client you use. If you dislike the original client or web interface, just use Elk, Semaphore, Tusky, etc. whatever you prefer.

in reply to 𝘋𝘪𝘳𝘬

There's also tonnes of custom CSS stuff people are doimg for the web view, I think. E.g.:

nileane.fr/@TangerineUI.

Developing Whole-Process People’s Democracy to Advance Chinese Modernization

NixOS project calling contributors "nazis" - dunno what to make of it.

I love Linux just like the next guy and have had several installations of NixOS to toy around.

I confess I was taken by suprise to stumble across the linked article and am not sure what to make of it.

Was someone more closely involved and can shed some light into this? Because, to be honest, I don't feel very informed on that matter and what to make of it...

in reply to neonred

Oh wow. That article is "full" of "scare quotes". Best way to show you don't "agree" with something.

I'm a bit out of the "loop". Has "Lunduke" "gone off too Hogwarts", if you catch my "drift".

Iran earthquake sparks speculation of covert nuclear weapons test

Earth quakes very often in Iran. Sounds like fearmongering and repeat of lies about Iraq.

Nazi Zombies: Portable is a free and open source Call of Duty: Zombies demake

"A few developers have been building Nazi Zombies: Portable, a Call of Duty: Zombies demake powered by various enhanced forks of the Quake engine."
in reply to Remmy

That's sick! I'll try it on my Steam Deck!

Edit: ran great. Controls weren't ideal. I had to use a mouse in the menus.

I'll try it on my Orange pi zero 3 just for giggles.

-EDIT- I just did (straight from their site), and welp... 5 minutes to load a map, lots of stuttering yet performance was okay'ish ( ~25 frames per second). Not bad for a little board with only 1 GiB of ram and the power draw capped at 2W.

-EDIT2- Nvm that, I grabbed the binary, ran it locally and the experience was much, much better. Absolutely playable.

If you’re adventurous, Sker Ritual and Hellbreach Vegas both apparently have good ProtonDB results. (Indie imitation games)

Anxiously waiting for ARCH to update their repos, they YANKED it from the unstable repo so I can't cheat and download it early. :)

ascii-matrix: render ascii art + matrix effect

gitlab.com/christosangel/ascii…

This script written in the C language, will render the matrix effect in the
terminal, while rendering ascii art loaded from a txt file,
at the center of the terminal window.

Hey, I'd like to check this out, but do not have a GitLab account. Is there any alternative?

Hey, this is your lucky day: You don't need a github account.

All you need to do to easily install this project is to install git.

Open a terminal.

If you are using a Debian-based distribution (ubuntu, linuxmint, pop_os etc), copy-paste this command:

sudo apt install git

If you are using an Arch-based distribution:
sudo pacman -S git

From there, follow the instructions on the repo.

Have fun!

If you need any help, do not hesitate to ask for it.

Hamas's military spokesperson says Israel could have reclaimed captives a year ago

in reply to Keeponstalin

Is this an actual News outlet or something written by AI? I only ask because there are quite a few grammatical errors that are synonymous to AI or children.
in reply to VintageTech

I don't know what in particular you're referring to, but Keren Setton is an Israeli Journalist. I don't see any reason to think this article was written by AI

Nice, many people have a nvidia graphics pc. This seems very helpful for all non technical users.
in reply to sxwpb

And one less thing to waste time on for experienced users.
in reply to petsoi

If there is one thing to criticize is the need to install Gnome Software. I’d prefer that this was available in the KDE Discover.

[POSTPONED] Loops by Pixelfed • Public beta launching in 16 hours

It turns out that Meta's Threads.net platform is building a groups feature that they curiously named Loops, and we feel the need to polish the app and Loops platform further so we can maintain the communities expectations.

Ugh. Already being bad neighbors in the fediverse.

in reply to abbenm

That is a really stupid name, though. Common words are very clash happy (as seen here) and nearly impossible to search for.

Tantacrul mentions onboarding problems with average people learning to switch to the fediverse as an alternative to Facebook

This reminds me of , where he mentioned that the system for counting votes needs to be easily understandable to the average person so that they can adequately trust it.

When did people stop wanting to learn anything? Everything has to be dumbed down to the level of toddlers otherwise people can't be bothered.

To me the fediverse is great because you need higher than a room temperature IQ to use it so the posts are already far greater quality and the interactions are more meaningful than any other social network. Meta can keep all the screaming adult children in their platform.

in reply to Breve

I can tell you that the average person in the last 30 years hasn't wanted to learn shit. I suspect it goes back far longer than that but I was too young to pay any attention.

People like us have always been around but we are not the norm. We thrive on challenge on the advantages of doing things different and better ways. But the vast majority of human history is primarily people just wanting to get by. They spent their extra time shining their floors or waxing their cars. Maybe getting that last decoration up in the foyer. That's why we have so many databases running in Excel, It says easy as possible while just barely skirting by danger.

in reply to moosetwin

I've watched the whole video through, and honestly that felt like an underbaked take. People will have difficulty understanding federation? Seriously!? Surprise surprise, but if you know what email is, you already understand federation.
