my fav bit was when they complain how capitalist markets can't compete with central planning 🎻
In the process, the West has been abandoning its commitment to a bottom-up, market-based approach to setting technical standards. “We are being forced to undermine a system that has been very effective and that we have profited from for a long time,” laments Mr Rühlig. In more ways than one, China is making the West play by its rules.

Ventoy Update
Dear community,
I hope this message finds you well. I want to take a moment to address the concerns raised in Issue #2795 regarding the BLOB functionality in our app. First and foremost, I sincerely apologize for any confusion or frustration this may have caused. I was on vacation during this time, and I understand that my absence may have contributed to the lack of clarity surrounding this issue.
The BLOB feature is an important aspect of our app, and I recognize that the documentation surrounding it has not been as clear as it should be. I appreciate your patience as we work through these challenges, and I want to assure you that I am fully committed to resolving this matter.
As I return to work, I will prioritize updating the documentation to provide a comprehensive understanding of how the BLOB functionality works. I will also investigate the specific concerns raised in Issue #2795 to ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly.
Your trust in our software is paramount, and I am dedicated to regaining any confidence that may have been affected by this situation. I am confident that, with your continued support and feedback, we can enhance the app and provide a better experience for all users.
Thank you for your understanding and for being a part of our community. I look forward to sharing updates with you soon as we work towards improving our app and its documentation.
Warm regards,
longpanda

You’ve been on vacation for 5+ months?
Also wouldn’t it be best to post this communication in the issue thread?
Given how long this has gone on now, it’d probably be best to inform your community that you’ll be removing BLOBs from the source and for them to be produced during build otherwise this shadow is going to remain.
This was the first time I’ve ever heard of your software and has kind of made me want to steer clear of it.

Many of the BLOBs are essential to allow Ventoy to work with Secure Boot. They are compiled and signed by Fedora and OpenSUSE. They definitely need to be better documented, but they aren't reproduceable for good reason.

"I hope this message finds you well", is a marker I have been using to detect GPT replies. Looks like this is from ChatGPT.
Also it says "BLOB feature" and "BLOB functionality". What in the coconut does that mean? "BLOB feature is an important aspect for our app." Come on..
It's really pathetic that they didn't even try to read it at least once.
I'm gonna be honest, when I read this, I initially thought it was a joke answer by a community menber. The joke being about vague hand-wavy statements that people make when dodging questions.
Then I realized it's OP, and OP is ostensibly the actual developer. I have nothing specific to say about this situation, especially from a technical perspective, but this reply... why even bother?

I am still not sure of it's just a mocking answer, tbh.

If this is impersonation (which it looks to be) shouldn't it be removed?
Are you going to set the precedent that impersonation of figures in the open source community is allowed?
Personally I would be in favor of removing this post until OP can provide proof of identity (eg. by posting something on the main github account corroborating this post).
Giving you the benefit of doubt here.
"/s" technically means "this comment is sarcastic in nature". But also commonly used with bad jokes and puns as well, indicating that this is indeed nonsense, and I'm aware of it, but I decided to say it anyway.
The previous comment was just a bad and cliche joke that is common in internet forums, referencing the "Skynet" from the "Terminator" movie series.

According to Jim Starkey, the person who coined the term, "Blob don't stand for nothin'." However, it is often referred to as a "Binary Large OBject", meaning a large file with content not easily readable by people.
With an open source project, you have source code which is turned into executables/"blobs" by the compiler. As long as you trust the compiler, you can (functionally) know the content of the blobs by looking at the source code they were made from.
In the case of Ventoy, several "blobs" are included from an unknown or vague origin. This is a great way to bundle malware, as seen with the XZ backdoor from earlier this year. As such, the original creator of the linked issue is requesting they are built/obtained at compile time, so either the content or origin of these files can easily be found.

The Warning Signs for Kamala Harris's Campaign Are Flashing Red
Key Takeaways:
- Kamala Harris's underdog narrative: Harris frames her campaign as an underdog, despite polling better than Biden did before dropping out.
- Close race dynamics: The election is tight, especially in swing states, with Harris underperforming in key demographics compared to Biden's 2020 performance.
- Trump's flaws: Harris critiques Trump for his presidency’s economic policies, handling of the pandemic, and attacks on immigrant communities.
- Voter demographics: Harris struggles with voters of color, young voters, seniors, and union workers; Trump has significant working-class support.
- Arab American voters: Support for Harris has declined due to her stance on Gaza and unconditional support for Israel, leading to a potential loss of Arab American voters, especially in Michigan.
- Policy shifts needed: The article argues Harris should adjust her stance on Gaza, support a ceasefire, and condition U.S. arms to Israel, which could sway Arab American voters.
- Economic populism: Harris is encouraged to focus on class-warfare rhetoric and pro-working class policies, such as a $15 minimum wage, capping drug costs, and expanding Social Security, to win over lower-income voters.
- Youth voter engagement: There's concern about low youth voter turnout and lack of outreach to young people of color, which could affect the election outcome.
- Final campaign stretch: Harris is urged to take bold steps on economic issues and appeal to working-class voters, similar to Biden’s approach in 2020, to secure victory in key states.

If anyone wants, here's an extremely optimistic 2009 Brookings Institute white paper on how various hostile actions against Iran would play out based off numbers and history.
Chapter 3 analyses a "boots on the ground" invasion (the occupation would require a draft), Chapters 4-6 analyze American and Israeli airstrikes. Neither of them expect Iran to employ masses of drones or close the strait, and they consider ballistic missiles against US assets unlikely.
While they have an extreme western bias, there's no way you can twist the numbers to look good.

America supports it when Israel does it, that means it’s okay.
Iran, go right ahead. Lebanon, go right ahead. Hamas, go right ahead.
Israel and America have already stated this is a perfectly valid reasoning. The rules of war go both ways.
Again: If America is the world ethics, these actions are perfectly valid. This is what America does.

But yeah, sure, an economy being destroyed isn't military damage.
It's not when the question is whether Iran can or should do a preemptive strike.
Fine, then the fact that Iran hit many of the targets has become public despite the Israelis best attempt to censor that information from coming out should tell you everything you need to know.
So should the fact that Iran got through with their first attack despite preemptively giving the targets to US/Israel, and that US did most of the interceptions at the cost of 1 billions dollars, and Israel used up most of its stock of ammunition.
By the by, given the cost of the ballistic missiles and the cost of the interceptors, hitting nothing is still a success. Not that that is relevant to this conversation give the fact that we know they did hit quite a few of their targets.
EDIT: Speaking of, a drone attack from Hezbollah hit a mess hall for a military base in Haifa. 67 confirmed casualties reported so far. Iron Dome didn't even detect it.

Latest analysis from journalists in the county of Israel, that Israel tried to censor, then got arrested for a 'aiding the enemy in war' charge for trying to report that Iran blew up at last one 500 million dollar radar system.
It's why the US is scrambling to ship THAAD systems to Israel.
Remember, Israel is incredibly censored right now, and believes that accurately reporting damage needs to covered up at all costs.
☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆ likes this.
We already saw that the dome cannot intercept Iranian missiles just days ago. Also, the math doesn't work in favor of the dome given that they need 2 interceptors per missile. There's also the issue of production capacity. Once it runs through the existing stockpiles of interceptors, making new ones at the rate they’re being consumed is not possible. For example, from 2008 to present, Lockheed Martin was able to produce 800 missiles, around 50 a year. armyrecognition.com/news/army-…
To counter the 180 missiles Iran reportedly launched, requiring up to 2 interceptors each, would have exhausted nearly HALF of all THAAD missiles ever produced. And that’s assuming there are enough launchers to even fire that many interceptors at once. The US is completely unprepared for the scale of war it is provoking around the globe.
Iran can absolutely cripple Israel by destroying its energy infrastructure.

Alls I’m saying is: be careful what you wish for.
If you’re going to be an accelerationist, you need to do things like BILLING certain people named G-LON TUSK, and others like them.
Otherwise, you’ll just be breaking down the government for them to build one that fits them better.

- There are two choices in the United States 2024 election. No third party stands a ghost of a chance of winning. No, not even if the 30,000 people you can reach on Lemmy all vote for Timothy Greenparty.
- A Trump victory in 2024 would not only be just as bad if not worse for the citizens of Gaza than Harris would, but also pose an existential threat to a large number of vulnerable Americans (trans people, immigrants, women seeking abortions).
- Given the margins of victory in 2016 and 2020, Kamala might not win if leftists don't vote for her.
- Snoozing fascism for four years is better than inviting it through the door now, and buys us time to build our defenses for when it comes back.
I'd like to focus my counterargument. Which of these statements do you disagree with?
What are you doing to stop fascism outside of voting for the lesser fascist?
Fascism cannot be defeated through the ballot box. It is capitalism in decay, when capitalist democracy becomes unviable and the capitalist ruling class choose capitalism over democracy.
I'm dismissing your framing; I dont live in a swing state, dont try to convince me to vote for the lesser fascist.
My question is, do you care about stopping fascism or do only you care about delaying it for another four years?
Do you care enough about stopping fascism to put in work to stop it outside of election day and trying to post your way into getting people to vote? Like, seriously, are you interested in putting in actual work to prevent fascism in the US in our lifetimes? This isn't a gotcha I'm trying to set a baseline.

I'm doing about 20 hours of work a week as part of a socialist org, in service of building up a center of power to actually be able to challenge the lesser and greater fascist.
I'm thinking long term, because I'm not satisfied with "just vote for the less fascist party every four years as each party keeps getting more fascist"
If all the work you're doing is within the confines of bourgeois sham-democracy you'll never be able to defeat fascism. Fascism is capitalism in crisis. You can either find a magic cure to stop the contradictions of capitalism from heightening or you can move toward defeating it.
The latter is the only one that has been demonstrated to actually work.
I sure hope Brown Hitler beats Orange Hitler.
What a vibrant fucking democracy you amerikkkans sure have over there. Whatever meaningless, bootlicking bourgeois electoralism you choose, let's hope you don't get everyone else on earth killed as a result of your endless and unapologetic imperialism, invasions, coups, proxy wars and many genocides.
Is it guilt that keeps you from reading your own history and understanding that all this mass murder that amerikkka has been inflicting on the world for hundreds of years is not driven by the individual incoherent puppets your political system forces you to choose from, but from the very nature of your capitalist empire? Fascism is the product of capitalism in crisis. It's not a thing you can vote against, since you have absolutely no meaningful input in the decisions of the worlds most violent military empire (and you know it). What kind of political system creates a revolving door for endless marches of psychotic war criminals and even puts a few of them on the menu every few years? Obviously not a system that opposes fascism.
