never thought i'd see minetest rebranding itself (if rebrand is the correct word at all anyway)

in reply to John

Oh man, I remember this from years ago when the only 1-up on Minecraft it had, was that I could run it at 60 FPS, infinite chunks in all directions, no extreme lag spikes while generating the map, and further view distance.

Zero mods back then, so I'm happy to see the mod support!

"you are less valuable than the data you produce"

For how often I see articles talking about the dangers of tech, I'm surprised at the lack of mention for watch_dogs. Sure, its just a silly little Ubisoft game series, but this game series predicted so much of today's world. The 2nd game is basically propoganda against corporations hoarding so much data, exploring how each of them exploit the world they inhabit. If you haven't played the game, I highly recommend checking it out just for the intro alone. It might not be real world events or actual statistics, but it sure broke down some of the major problems in the industry into something my 13 year old brain could comprehend when I first played the game.
in reply to BadlyTimedLuck

Games can help people talk about issues, bridging the communication barrier to some topics.
Can't believe they managed to explain the issue in 2 mins lol.

I thought it was a flop, but the reviews are positive

Three dead, 67 injured in Hezbollah drone attack on IOF Haifa base

A drone attack on an Israeli military base in Binyamina, south of Haifa, has killed three Israelis and wounded 67 others, according to Israeli media.

Notably, Israeli air defense systems failed to detect the drone, which detonated without triggering air raid sirens in the area, as confirmed by Israeli media outlets.

The strike reportedly targeted the dining hall at a base belonging to the Golani Brigade.

It was reported that 50 ambulances rushed to the scene to transport the casualties, with helicopters also being called in.

They really should have bombed the ambulances too. Tit for tat, and all that.
in reply to geneva_convenience

I don't understand how the terrorists focus on military targets while the IDF keeps blowing ambulances and whole families away.

Sleep/Suspend/Resume working on framework coming soon

I will be bundling these together, but yes, this works flawlessly as shown.

Controls for suspend, suspend then hibernate and lid behavior. Lid behaviors I am really bullish with is suspend to hibernate with lid close and straight hibernate with lid close.

Extension is a fork, with my custom changes for GNOME 47..

Btw, it would be amazing to see @frameworkcomputer@fosstodon.org posting into this community. Let me know if you need any help to get interop between Lemmy and Mastodon.

If anyone from framework is listening to this: I'd be more than glad to give full control over this community to any of your social media staff

in reply to rglullis

Appreciate the offer. We primarily use this to mirror other social channels we manage. But sometimes we post Mastodon exclusives.

Self-hosting my own federated podcast called Linux Prepper

I’ve setup my own federated podcast through Castopod, but unsure of how to federate it with Lemmy directly. It is project-focused around FOSS tooling and just enjoying life. X-posted to selfhosted and technology communities.

Any suggestions on better integrating it with Lemmy, Mastodon and other services? Relay servers were mentioned to me, but I haven't messed with them yet. This article on joinfediverse wiki, relaylist.com/ and Fedi Tips guide are what I'm working through understanding. Thanks!

unsure of how to federate it with Lemmy directly

I think this will be a struggle.

In Lemmy terms, everyone here is a 'Person', sending a 'Note' activity for the fediverse@lemmy.world 'Group'.
With Castopod, it classes your podcast as a 'Person', and each episode as a 'PodcastEpisode'.

If Castopod classed your podcast as a Group, the same as PeerTube does for video channels, then integration would be relatively easy. A Group for a podcast would make more sense to me, but FunkWhale have made similar decisions, probably due to the dominance of Mastodon within the Fediverse.

As mentioned, you could probably tag your episodes with the address of a pre-existing Group (e.g. a community on Lemmy), but that pre-supposes that Lemmy knows what to do with the 'PodcastEpisode' type (a quick look on their GitHub suggests that it currently doesn't)

in reply to Andrew

Afaik nutomic recently improved federation interoperability with projects like WordPress that use "Person" instead of "Group". But idk the technical details for that.
in reply to kiol

kbin.earth/m/fediverse@lemmy.w…

You might be able to integrate into lemmy by adding your podcast rss into a lemmy community made for your podcast. Lemmy users could subscribe to the community and follow/discuss there. Feels like a redundant suggestion if your cms already supports activity pub, but as far as lemmy integration that's the only way I can think might work.

And then Israel is surprised that there is a tension with the Israeli. I wonder how they would feel if they were on the other side of the fence.

Any ideology that bans books is self-evidently intellectually and philosophically bankrupt.
in reply to Rottcodd

  • Michael Parenti, Blackshirts and Reds, Pure Socialism vs. Siege Socialism
  • Aldous Huxley was right[1] What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance.

But why ban Hilary Clinton's book? What sort of crazed ideology would be there that could be a threat to the current government?
in reply to HobbitFoot

neoliberalism and "liberal internationalism", also known as austerity, IMF debt, coups d'etat, getting bombed by NATO and signing Status of Forces Agreements
in reply to HobbitFoot

Ask Libyans in specific case of Clinton and everyone in global south about neoliberalism in general. It should be treated exactly like nazism in Nuremburg.

Pentagon confirms missile defence system and troops deploying to Israel

The Pentagon has confirmed it is sending a THAAD missile defence system and US troops to Israel, publicly acknowledging that US troops will be on the ground assisting in Israel's defence.
in reply to geneva_convenience

Now if Iran sends a ballistic missile in and kills one American what will the US do compared with what the did a few weeks ago when the IDF purposely shot an American protester in the Westbank?
in reply to Mycatiskai

There's a good chance it will be used for the declaration of a special military operation. And the Americans will finally get to invade Iran.
in reply to Mycatiskai

I don't think Iran will need to wait that long. This looks like the US/Israel are planning a joint operation counterattack on Iranian facilities. Which will trigger a retaliation in turn as Iran escalates in kind. Etc, etc.

The big difference now is that the US military will officially be getting its hands dirty in the region, much like we did in Desert Shield / Storm and in Libya. Very possible that the ghost of John McCain finally gets its long-sought-after bomb bomb Iran.

Open-bar has to be my favourite Gnome extension in a while

I don't run a lot of extensions on Gnome, but this one is a great way to add some customisation to the desktop.

I'm new to Gnome, been using XFCE and Budgie for the longest time. Does this or any other extension allow offsetting the location of the date and time? A webcam attached to my monitor mostly blocks it.
in reply to BrianTheeBiscuiteer

I can't check at the moment, but that sounds like something 'Simply Perfection' would be capable of.

It's essentially an addon specifically for tweaking the appearance of gnome stuff.

in reply to Destide

Awesome. I'll see if it's a good replacement for Dash to Dock. Thanks.

Edit: Nope, but I can use them in tandem.

But also people cheered for a guy eating cheese balls so you may have a point.

Columbus was a Sephardic Jew from Western Europe, study finds

in reply to IndustryStandard

Are we going to start blaming Jews for the native genocide now?
in reply to CyberMonkey404

Guess. Also how did you infer from the article that ONLY jews were blamed?
This entry was edited (1 year ago)

Guess

No. This isn't a quiz show. You have something to say - say it. Own up to your beliefs.

ONLY jews were blamed

True, it's not only Jews. Used to be it got blamed on Spaniards, catholics, some nebulous "whites". Anything other than class. Can never say out loud that part

in reply to CyberMonkey404

I'm sorry you seem quite misinformed. 1. By predenting not to know which natives I'm talking about. 2. By having issues with blaming also catholics for colonialism? If you have not studied the matter perhaps don't show your lack of knowledge. Christianity and colonialism by Howitt is mentioned by Marx in capital. Howitt begins by noting that it was primarily papal bull, which in the eyes of catholics legitimized the division of america. It stole the land from under the natives. Then he goes to describe individual colonies, and the treatment of natives. Good read.

Inside the TikTok documents: Stripping teens and boosting ‘attractive’ people

cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/20807329

People work inside the TikTok Inc. building in Culver City, Calif., Monday, March 11, 2024. House Republicans are moving ahead with a bill that would require Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban in the United States even as President Donald Trump is voicing opposition to the effort.
in reply to Luu Tuyen

“These unredacted documents prove that TikTok knows exactly what it’s doing to our kids – and the rot goes all the way to the top,” the group wrote on X.

Ironic.
