I suppose. But I think, minetest as a project was strengthend by its proximity to minecraft. The big reason you pick up luanti is that its like minecraft, but free and with more modding freedom. I dont think this is bad thing to be reflected in a name. But good luck to them, maybe they can pull the name change off without hurting their public recognition too much.
That was me after hearing MineClone and wanting to try it out. I was shocked how good it felt to play it (except for the soft lag and a bit clunky inventory)

Moving Forward

for those of you without the patience to read a blogpost, the new name's actually a bit of wordplay.
“Luanti” is a wordplay on the Finnish word luonti (“creation”) and the programming language Minetest Luanti employs for games and mods, Lua. The goal was to avoid yet another plain English word (good luck finding something unique…) and highlight the core principles of the project. The fusion of celeron55’s Finnish nationality and the platform’s focus on content creation resulted in the birth of “Luanti”.
IMO, the worst thing about "Minetest" is that it sounded like it was just a test creation, a prototype or experiment. It's certainly well beyond that now. The announcement introduction mentions people associate it with being a Minecraft clone or alpha release, but even further, to me the name initially gave me the impression it was [still] someone's small hobby project. 'Luanti' is much better.
On this note, another thing I appreciate is what they said about "Free" and "Libre": those names are great for saying "This is a free/libre/open clone of [x]", and that's what I'll think when I see it. Software like LibreOffice aims to support Microsoft Office documents, OpenRTC2 and OpenTTD are for people who want to see those games pretty-faithfully cloned, even if extended. Luanti is not OpenMinecraft.
Did they ever fix the game having a maximum map size of like 10.000 by 10.000? That limitation always seemed to put it at a disadvantage compared to Minecraft, for larger communities
It is basically infinite. I would be very surprised if you could reach the end. Having a pregenerated map also makes the game a lot lighter. (At the cost of longer world creation)
Yeah I also never reached the end, though I imagine if playing multiplayer, with enough players and time, that then at some point there won't be any untouched land.
I find the increased world height much more important. Luanti can generate actual mountains, and caves where you'll want to bring ladders for your descent. It was the first time, I felt like it made sense to build minecarts and intermediate mining bases, because the ores reach far deeper.
I played some minetest and then looked at Minecraft. Is minecraft really limited to -64 +256??? I read it a couple of times but still can't believe it. Ho can a game with °mine° in its name be so limited? More like Buildcraft Imo.
I believe, they increased it a little while ago, so it's actually -64 to +320 now.
But yeah, I don't think anyone's actually happy about the limited world height. It's so limited, because of the way Minecraft works on a technical level. It loads the map in chunks, which are just massive pillars, reaching from the bottom of the world all the way to the sky, across the whole 384 blocks.
As a result, if they increase the world height, they increase how many blocks have to be loaded at once, which increases the lag. Luanti doesn't have this problem, because it uses cubic chunks instead.
Yeah, I hear that. Although, I’ve travelled many thousands of blocks in Minecraft worlds, I’ve never travelled tens of thousands, so the limits in Luanti work for me. The increased world depth in Luanti seems more beneficial to me. YMMV

I don't follow Minetest development that closely anymore, but last time I checked there were no issues or pull requests on their GitHub, nor something official regarding a name change in the forums.
This feels like there are just a bunch of people haphazardly deciding there is a new name now.
I'm not going to search further to find the original discussion, but another user in this thread mentions seeing talk of this about a year ago. I agree that it's not very professional for the new website to be in a less than functional state, but it feels like excitement or decision fatigue may be the culprit, not a rushed process. There were plenty of those threads and discussions happening during the past few years. This is a constant topic that came up in the forums and sometimes GitHub over and over again.
Yes, and in the last twelve months those discussions clearly accelerated, and that post made it clear the lead/original dev had made their mind up. Which very much negates you saying this was rushed.
Those in open source circles will see through places like GamingOnLinux, Lemmy, Reddit and the official IRC/Discord. Those that don't find out probably are no where near the open source gaming community so it won't really matter.
It has come a long way. These days it doesn't even come with a game preinstalled. You can play VoxeLibre, Asuna, and so much more. Plus the original Minetest game is still installable. Also there are quite a lot of mods and other content available.
The only gripes I really have is the security and UI design. Neither are that bad but they could be better.
Online play is 100% unencrypted or authenticated. Client executes lua code sent by the server. I hope the code is kinda sandboxed but wouldnt put my hopes up there.
As far as I’m aware, most of the “dangerous” lua api (io/network etc) is blocked and only available to mods during the startup phase, and not otherwise during runtime.
But I’m sure there are workarounds. For one, I’ve written mods with rust for it, and you can require and then call any dynamic library through lua, with all of the io and networking you’d want, as long as it is brought in during the init phase. And the mods that do access the “dangerous” api, have to be explicitly given rights to do so (but again, by the server, not the clients) in the config before it works.
It’s not that bad for the most cases, as long as you trust the server. If playing single player, you personally control which mods get the secure environment access, so at that point it’s entirely your own fault, if you get exploited.
I hope they can build on some work from the lua devs. Isolating stuff like that is not always easy. But given lua is used extensively for embedded scripting, there is a good chance they can.
I actually like the new name. It seems like when a community project renames it always is something even worse than the original name. This is a great name that doesn't sound silly to say out loud.
Man, I saw them initiating discussions around the name like a year ago. I did not expect anything to actually come from that after all this time. But yeah, glad that it did.
Btw, mineclone2 also rebranded as Voxelibre, months ago, and for the same reasons. Voxelibre now actively moves away from copying Minecraft exactly. If you want the closest copy (and my personal recommendation) check out Mineclonia.
You can use the mod lib from contentdb. Also it is worth pointing out that they are moving towards a subgame focus not a mod focus. The original game has been discontinued and isn't preinstalled. You install a game like Asuna to get gameplay and content.
Of course you can still use Minetest game as a base for mods. I do that for simple worlds.

I worked for a company named essentially "The Portland Office", and it had that name for 30 years; because, honestly, who cares about a name? The product should stand out.
Even if you can objectively see the name as just a name, many people sadly can't. It is really difficult to recommend others to join, just because they come with the idea that it's a minecraft clone and since it's not a clone it feels janky.
Edit: Actually, just read the article, and considering the name Luanti is a mix between the Finnish word "creation" and the LUA programming language; and I'm preeetty sure LUA is pronounced "loo-wah" or "lew-ah", I think the Luanti pronunciation is more likely to be "loo-wun-tee".
Cool so, you linked to some git repositories that haven't been updated in 4-5 years, and looking at their current website there seems to be some sort of crypto involved now.
Minetest has been more a platform for making games on than a single game for at least a decade, since they added lua scripting. Seems like you're outraged over nothing with no real understanding of what Luanti has been and aims to be.
Oh man, I remember this from years ago when the only 1-up on Minecraft it had, was that I could run it at 60 FPS, infinite chunks in all directions, no extreme lag spikes while generating the map, and further view distance.
Zero mods back then, so I'm happy to see the mod support!

For how often I see articles talking about the dangers of tech, I'm surprised at the lack of mention for watch_dogs. Sure, its just a silly little Ubisoft game series, but this game series predicted so much of today's world. The 2nd game is basically propoganda against corporations hoarding so much data, exploring how each of them exploit the world they inhabit. If you haven't played the game, I highly recommend checking it out just for the intro alone. It might not be real world events or actual statistics, but it sure broke down some of the major problems in the industry into something my 13 year old brain could comprehend when I first played the game.
I feel like the dirty little secret at the core of the whole of that advertising industry is that it's actually really hard to justify spending the amount of money on it that people currently do. Beyone when products are white washing their own downsides, is spending more money on marketers even productive by capitals standards? They chase these data driven privacy monstrosities the same way websites chase clicks becase they can be used as a meteic to show advertisers '"engagement'" but how much of this whole song and dance is doing anything anymore? I feel like the advertising industry only survives the way it does today because it asserts itself as important but it hardly productive.

The website was absolutely packed to the brim with ads. Animated, expanding, moving, etc. All competing for your attention. How can ANY of those ads be getting enough attention for it to be worth it?
I used to work for an algorithmic advertising company.
The gist is that if you get one big spender it offsets the cost of losing a thousand or more other people because those large contracts usually last past the official sale
Meanwhile, attempts like Mozilla's Privacy-Preserving Attribution to allow for showing that an advertising campaign is effective without the granular, per-user tracking are rejected by the community, meaning that the situation never improves in even a small way.
That must have been a concerted effort. The amount of anti-mozilla posts and comments that totaly permeated everything for a short while, was very suspicious.
I feel like it's less a conspiracy and more that some people will accept nothing less than no ads or tracking whatsoever, even if it makes no economic sense with regards to how sites support themselves.

I think that today the prevention takes some effort and time to learn. In my personal experience people are mostly oblivious/shrug off the data mining, not thinking about the consequences ("what can they possibly do with this data?").
Did it really predict these things? We’ve had data surveillance and algorithmic targeting for a while before Watchdogs. A lot of “prescient” sci-fi is just writing about stuff that’s already happening but which people don’t pay much attention to.
That NSA data center in Utah has been around since the Bush years. None of it was "new" when watch_dogs came out, it just wasn't in the public consciousness. Most of the stuff was happening or being developed at the time.

A drone attack on an Israeli military base in Binyamina, south of Haifa, has killed three Israelis and wounded 67 others, according to Israeli media.

In Lemmy terms, everyone here is a 'Person', sending a 'Note' activity for the fediverse@lemmy.world 'Group'. With Castopod, it classes your podcast as a 'Person', and each episode as a 'PodcastEpisode'.
If Castopod classed your podcast as a Group, the same as PeerTube does for video channels, then integration would be relatively easy. A Group for a podcast would make more sense to me, but FunkWhale have made similar decisions, probably due to the dominance of Mastodon within the Fediverse.
As mentioned, you could probably tag your episodes with the address of a pre-existing Group (e.g. a community on Lemmy), but that pre-supposes that Lemmy knows what to do with the 'PodcastEpisode' type (a quick look on their GitHub suggests that it currently doesn't)
Afaik nutomic recently improved federation interoperability with projects like WordPress that use "Person" instead of "Group". But idk the technical details for that.
You might be able to integrate into lemmy by adding your podcast rss into a lemmy community made for your podcast. Lemmy users could subscribe to the community and follow/discuss there. Feels like a redundant suggestion if your cms already supports activity pub, but as far as lemmy integration that's the only way I can think might work.

The Pentagon has confirmed it is sending a THAAD missile defence system and US troops to Israel, publicly acknowledging that US troops will be on the ground assisting in Israel's defence.
This is like, technically a weapon. It's a tool for destroying enemy missiles in the air before they impact their target. It's about as purely defensive of a weapon as you can get.
The US soldiers are operating the missile defense system, so there's not room for Israel to "creatively" repurpose them. They aren't assisting in any missions in Palestine, they're purely defending against Iranian missiles.
The US providing this defense however allows Israel to be even more belligerent without fear of retaliation, possibly the only thing stopping them from expanding their genocide faster.
And now they will claim the US soldiers were attacked after placing them in the line of fire and use it as another excuse to go to war with Iran and continue exterminating Palestinians. It truly is sickening that they are fully participating in genocide.
There is no such thing as a defensive weapon. Its entire purpose is shielding them from the consequences of their own actions. Its just the armor of the tank that is Israels military. Its an integral part of the weapon.
They're air defense operators, just like gets deployed around Saudi Arabia's oil infrastructure.
If you want to feel bad about anything, it's that this will significantly reduce the likelihood that Iran can threaten Israel with ballistic missiles.
THAAD is really good at what it does, and something tells me that the Iranians aren't going to want to waste their entire stock pile on fruitless saturation attempts. To say nothing of their concerns of killing American troops.

THAAD can be overwhelmed similar to Israel's own missile systems. There has been a THAAD system in Israel since 2019 so it already failed during Iran's retaliation.
The US is sending around 100 US troops with the new system so there will be additional interception capabilities. But it remains unlikely this will affect a saturation missile attack.
I'm not saying it can't be. I'm saying I don't believe Iran has the capabilities or stockpiles available to do so, given the other American assets in theatre, or a desire to risk killing American troops.

On October 13, 2024, the Pentagon announced it will send an air defense system along with about 100 U.S. troops to operate it. The deployment comes after two direct missile attacks from Iran against Israel on April 13 and Oct. 1.
And then it talks about a deployment 5 years ago for a training exercise.

I'm not opposed to this one honestly, it's defensive and Israelis are quite literally holding the world hostage in a way that every other nuclear power simply implies.

There's are lots of reasons to be upset at the us, tons in fact. Defense systems aren't really one of those. They just let us get boots on the ground and if the American playbook holds true a good third of those people will be intelligence assets. That's also a very good point. It's like shielding a bully while they continue to bully other people. While I wouldn't mind seeing that bully getting smacked by the other people they oppress, I also don't want to see more people dying either. However, I know Iran has been targeting military targets and not civilian ones. So...
Anyway, this is all just fucked up and I want to see an end to this senseless violence and death, and I want to see Israel getting what they fucking deserve. Try to scare Iran into not attacking. Iran targets military installations including missile systems so there is now a chance that they will blow up legally (at least according to USA) stationed US soldiers there. Or worse, this might be a deliberate provocation and they want Iran to blow them up to have some bloody shirt to blind the people into yet another war.
Iran has already taken on US military installations in Syria and in Iraq. It seems very likely that there was a US presence at some of the military installations that Iran has already attacked in Israel.

It's more likely that they are being sent because they are trained to operate THAAD and sending them is more efficient than training IDF troops to operate it.

Wasn't this around the time US murdered Soleimani? It was clear back then that US no longer want war, Soleimani head was to have a last word and to appease republican hawks in Washington. Now the situation is different, current administration seem to push for war. Also US is perfectly able to ignore any and all deaths of its citizens when they don't want war, but bray for blood at the slightest provocation when they do want. They just have an excellent propaganda around this - most glaring historical example is how the sinking of Lusitiania scared Germans so much that in september 1939 even Goebbels eaten all that propaganda and after sinking Athenia everyone there was scared shitless and entire act was made so secret that it only accidentally came to light after war. Also USS Liberty incident.

I think a big part of why the US didn't respond is that a) they took out Soleimani first and b) an Iranian air defence battery, on high alert expecting US retaliation, immediatley shot down a passenger jet.
The airliner being downed really took the sting out of it, kind of like someone swinging at you, barely connecting, and then immediately punching themselves in the dick.

It's not as though the US is actually losing money over this. We're making weapon sales and using old lend lease practices. And when the war is over, and Putin's regime pushed out, investment in the country would also be lucrative. There is no reason for the US not to want Ukraine to survive.
On top of that, again, these are peaceful, innocent people (who willingly gave up nuclear weapon technology in order to achieve that peace), who are now being invaded and slaughtered by a foreign nation. Having their children abducted and indoctrinated into the idea that there is no Ukraine. It's genocide.

In case people aren't clear, these soldiers are the operators of the additional THAAD system they are deploying to Israel. These aren't infantry being sent to kick in doors alongside the IDF. THAAD is a ballistic missile defense system with no offensive capabilities. We already have a THAAD unit deployed to Israel.
Don't be mad because you expect to see headlines saying US Soldiers are killing civilians in Gaza. Be mad because this enhances Israel's ability to continue escalating conflict with Iran and hiding behind US cover when Iran strikes back.
I have some empathy for those coerced into joining out of sincere ignorance (even though I believe they should know better). Eyes Left has an interesting example. The front lines radicalize some people into anti-imperialism, and if they have enough of a conscience to wake up and join the resistance, then I say have the potential to redeem themselves.
Sending US troops in any capacity seems to me that US hawks are wanting to increase the chances of US troops being killed. Which then means that the US can then justify sending everyone in that they want.
Use the excuse of "they attacked 'Merica" and do the same shit that happened in Afghanistan and Iraq (just with Israel "inviting" them in and as a "supporting" army). Which will of course ignore all of the US citizens that have been murdered by Israel.

Hell, they might even pull-off something with Russia that can be used for the death spiral that NATO Article 5 promises. I don't think Iran will need to wait that long. This looks like the US/Israel are planning a joint operation counterattack on Iranian facilities. Which will trigger a retaliation in turn as Iran escalates in kind. Etc, etc.

I have a colleague. She doesn't like Windows (more like she doesn't like MS spying), has a laptop with Ubuntu, but she also doesn't like change.
This put her in weird situation, when she still has PC with Windows 7, outdated firefox and complains youtube is borked all the time. And once she moves to laptop, there's old Ubuntu (more than couple major releases old) which was never updated, because "she liked it that way". Guess what? Similar problems.
I told her many times that if she wanted carefree linux experience, she should update it once in a while, there's no evil MS behind it, but no. She never updates because reasons. She rather visit some obscure website that presents some terminal commands she doean't understand, but copy them over anyway and voila... the linux is in even worse state than before.
Microsoft taught people to distrust updates because they break shit and don't ask if you want them or not.
That leads a lot of people to being "scared" of updates, and Linux updates literally constantly (a good thing).
Further, Ubuntu as well as others have moved towards phased rollouts, to ensure new versions don't break things. I constantly have updates say "These updates have been held back due to phasing" which is intended to save me from any trouble if the small number of users who they have phased the updates to start having issues. Easier to roll back and fix for a small number of users as opposed to the whole world.
Linux doesn't just handle updates better, but they've continued to grow and change how they handle updates to make them better for end-users long-term.
Breaking Microsoft ingrained habits is hard for some people.
I'm a lazy fuck. That's why I use openSUSE Tumbleweed myself that has snapper preconfigured. I roll updates once I have time/will, sometimes twice a week, sometimes multiple months between. It's fucking solid! And even if it breaks, it's couple minutes to get it back to working condition and then I wait a week and next update is fine. This is the best!
I'm lazy and old so I'm doing it the least efficient way by just putting all updates into a daily cronjob (or doing updates on reboot). Much more modern ways to handling it than the crontab, but I too, am lazy.
This looks great, just installed it. Now to figure out how to make it looks totally transparent with just the different buttons and shrink it a bit like in the project's screenshots
I don't think Gnome Tweaks is an extension. Just an app that exposes some settings and DCONF options that haven't been added to the usual settings menu.
But nah, I don't use that either. Font settings really should be in the normal settings menu, though.
I pretty much change a couple of keybinds, remove a few .rpms and replace them with Flatpaks, and that's it.
I'm new to Gnome, been using XFCE and Budgie for the longest time. Does this or any other extension allow offsetting the location of the date and time? A webcam attached to my monitor mostly blocks it.

This is all pretty much out in the open. We have a pretty clear idea on where they stand and what are still open issues. One word: heat shield. That's probably the bit where they're furthest away from a definite solution. And the reliability of those raptors is also a huge issue. Just look at the fire in the booster after the catch today. This is pseudo-science. Judaism is a religion, not a gene. And to the extent that ancestry can be inferred from genetics, around 20% of the iberian population has iberian jews as ancestors. So is spain considered 20% jewish? Of course not, because ancestry is an ancient mixed bag and judaism is a religion. Is there any evidence that Columbus practiced judaism? I haven't heard any.
