[unbelievable - of course Biden and Harris will go along with no complaint]

Former Stasi officer jailed for 10 years over 1974 Berlin border shooting

A former officer in the East German secret police has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for the murder of a Polish firefighter at a Berlin border crossing 50 years ago.

Martin Naumann, now 80, shot Czesław Kukuczka in the back at close range on 29 March 1974 as Kukuczka walked towards the last in a series of control posts at a transit area in the divided city, having been told he had a free pass to escape to West Berlin.

The truth surrounding Kukuczka’s death was never revealed to his family. Instead, his cremated remains were sent in an urn to his wife, Emilia, weeks later, after which he was buried in a private ceremony by his family in southern Poland.

It took the dogged research skills of a historian immersed in the history of the Ministry for State Security (MfS), or the Stasi – which was the intelligence service and secret police of the communist GDR – to unearth the details of the case years later.

That's.... Great.
But (sexual) child abuse still become time-barred after a measly 12yrs. Just around the corner where the victims are finally old enough to even do something about it.

But yeah, let's focus on the important stuff like jailing some 80yrs old for doing his job 50yrs ago. Not saying it was good or just or anything.

Doesn't Polish border patrol newly have the right to shoot at any illegal immigrants attempting to cross? See the crime isn't shooting a human being, the crime for which many stasi members were sentenced was not being properly chauvinist.

How the fuck are there still undecided voters, you'd think everyone at this point would have already cemented their opinions but it seems like there's just a good third of the USA running purely on vibes.

Exactly, I don't really think there are a lot of people who are undecided. People aren't voting on individual issues anymore, there are two competing narratives regarding what the future of US should look like, and people either subscribe to one or the other. Anybody who is going to vote for Harris was already going to vote democrats regardless of who the candidate is because they think the republicans are destroying the country, and vice versa.

In the Netherlands, we’re closing our emptying prisons. What can other countries learn from how we did it? | Renate van der Zee

What? Less than a month ago the government said there weren't enough cells and they were looking into moving inmates to Estonia because they were already having to delay jail sentences.

State Secretary Coenradie wants to explore in the short term whether hundreds of prisoners can be accommodated in Estonia from 2026. Officials from the ministry have already been to Estonia. The Estonians are positive about the plan. The prison in Tartu would be the most suitable, say insiders.

Palestine’s UN envoy says ‘genocide within genocide’ going on in north Gaza

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/21369057

Osama Hamdan, Hamas’s representative in Lebanon, told Al Jazeera that Israel has “prevented the entry of food supplies to the north for 10 days”, describing what is happening in Jabalia as “a crime against humanity”.

Intentionally starving civilians by “depriving them of objects indispensable to their survival, including willfully impeding relief supplies” is a war crime, according to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

Meanwhile, six Palestinians, most of them children, were injured when the Israeli military bombed a home in the Tuffah neighbourhood of Gaza City, Wafa said.

Scegliere il Fediversoin base al proprio iQ 🤣

Secondo me Hubzilla dovrebbe finire nell'ultimo percentile, mentre Bonfire andrebbe fatto usare solo a chi ha superato l'esame per la MIT Bonfire Advanced Certification User... 😂

cool article

which makes me wonder why there are people who still avoid systemd. i get that alpine can't use glibc, but what about everyone else? i just see vague statements about systemd being "too big" or going "against unix philosophy", but never concrete disadvantages of systemd compared to other pid-1s

edit: also, i wonder how viable would it be to port systemd to musl or whatever alpine uses so that they can take advantage of it

Photo management at the cmdline - recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a tool to manage photos at the cmdline? I just want to move photos into dirs based on their metadata (YYYY/DD), occasionally fix up metadata (adjust dates), rename photo filenames to match a template and/or query my photos for certain things. It doesn't need to be a gallery or image touch-up tool, I have other things for that.

I'm aware of exiftool and ImageMagick, perhaps they can do the job but they seem quite low level, really need to build scripts around them - I'd like something that operates at a slightly higher level so I don't have to do too much scripting.

A quick search turned up chee (GPLv3) which can:

  • search photos using a simple query language
  • manage named queries (called collections)
  • copy/symlink images into a custom folder structure

...but it's not had an update in a few years (maybe it's feature complete tho!) Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Thank you for this. I think this has some of the operations I need, I will dig into the code.
