Birds Practice Singing in Their Sleep

cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/20847663

Scientists had previously observed sleeping birds making movements that resembled lip-syncing. In earlier work, Mindlin and his colleagues implanted electrodes in two Zebra Finches; for a recent study in Chaos, they did the same for two Great Kiskadees. This let them record and compare neuron and muscle activity in the sleeping birds.

When awake, Zebra Finches sing a well-regulated line of staccato notes. But their sleeping song movements are fragmented, disjointed and sporadic—“rather like a dream,” Mindlin says. A dozing finch seems to silently practice a few “notes” and then add another, producing a pattern of muscle activity that reminds Mindlin “of learning a musical instrument.”

At least Hitler was a dementia crazy shit following “ideals”. This one is even worse, behind him are the greatest powers in the world. He is a pure breed killer .

Nobel winning Hiroshima survivor's Gaza comparison angers Israel

Israel has attacked a prominent survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing over a comparison he made between the blast and the current assault on Gaza.

Toshiyuki Mimaki, a leader of the Nihon Hidankyo organisation that represents survivors of the US attack, compared the two after the group was announced as the recepient of the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

“I thought for sure it would be the people working so hard in Gaza, as we’ve seen," he told reporters in Tokyo after the announcement. In Gaza, bleeding children are being held by their parents. It’s like in Japan 80 years ago.”

In response, Israel's ambassador to Japan attacked the comparison as "outrageous and baseless", and said such comparisons "distort history and dishonor the victims".

Lol even the Nobel peace prize winner angers them.

They have more in common with Nazis with their Lebensraum settler colonialism and apartheid system full of their riff on concentration camps.

But, fun fact: Western interests, including Israel, sure do seem to conveniently benefit from Daesh attacks on those aligned with Palestine - at opportune moments. I'm just saying.

Former Stasi officer jailed for 10 years over 1974 Berlin border shooting

A former officer in the East German secret police has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for the murder of a Polish firefighter at a Berlin border crossing 50 years ago.

Martin Naumann, now 80, shot Czesław Kukuczka in the back at close range on 29 March 1974 as Kukuczka walked towards the last in a series of control posts at a transit area in the divided city, having been told he had a free pass to escape to West Berlin.

The truth surrounding Kukuczka’s death was never revealed to his family. Instead, his cremated remains were sent in an urn to his wife, Emilia, weeks later, after which he was buried in a private ceremony by his family in southern Poland.

It took the dogged research skills of a historian immersed in the history of the Ministry for State Security (MfS), or the Stasi – which was the intelligence service and secret police of the communist GDR – to unearth the details of the case years later.

That's.... Great.
But (sexual) child abuse still become time-barred after a measly 12yrs. Just around the corner where the victims are finally old enough to even do something about it.

But yeah, let's focus on the important stuff like jailing some 80yrs old for doing his job 50yrs ago. Not saying it was good or just or anything.

Doesn't Polish border patrol newly have the right to shoot at any illegal immigrants attempting to cross? See the crime isn't shooting a human being, the crime for which many stasi members were sentenced was not being properly chauvinist.

How the fuck are there still undecided voters, you'd think everyone at this point would have already cemented their opinions but it seems like there's just a good third of the USA running purely on vibes.
in reply to Gucci_Minh [he/him]

Exactly, I don't really think there are a lot of people who are undecided. People aren't voting on individual issues anymore, there are two competing narratives regarding what the future of US should look like, and people either subscribe to one or the other. Anybody who is going to vote for Harris was already going to vote democrats regardless of who the candidate is because they think the republicans are destroying the country, and vice versa.

In the Netherlands, we’re closing our emptying prisons. What can other countries learn from how we did it? | Renate van der Zee

What? Less than a month ago the government said there weren't enough cells and they were looking into moving inmates to Estonia because they were already having to delay jail sentences.

State Secretary Coenradie wants to explore in the short term whether hundreds of prisoners can be accommodated in Estonia from 2026. Officials from the ministry have already been to Estonia. The Estonians are positive about the plan. The prison in Tartu would be the most suitable, say insiders.
