Humanity is on the verge of ‘shattering Earth’s natural limits’, say experts in biodiversity warning

Humanity is “on the precipice” of shattering Earth’s limits, and will suffer huge costs if we fail to act on biodiversity loss, experts warn. This week, world leaders meet in Cali, Colombia, for the Cop16 UN biodiversity conference to discuss action on the global crisis. As they prepare for negotiations, scientists and experts around the world have warned that the stakes are high, and there is “no time to waste”.

“We are already locked in for significant damage, and we’re heading in a direction that will see more,” says Tom Oliver, professor of applied ecology at the University of Reading. “I really worry that negative changes could be very rapid.”

Without any proof, I suspect this is what happened to Mars. We are the only planet left in or solar system with life, and we insist on trying to destroy it all.
in reply to IndustryStandard

Nope. Nor evidence of it haveing ever existed.

The above guess is no better then religion. Based on current evidence.

Not yet. Something happened to Mars early in its history that changed its environment but we still don't have evidence that life had begun there to get wiped out. The biggest reason for me to think it didn't happen is the history of the Sun and how that affects the habitable zone. As the Sun ages it gets brighter, and the zone that life would be more probable in moves outward. In most calculations of the habitable zone for the Solar system Mars is still outside of its edge, and so definitely didn't have the best conditions earlier with a younger Sun's output.
in reply to IndustryStandard

Not that we have ever found, but I did say... "without proof". And Science is about gathering information on concepts that we have yet to answer.
in reply to IndustryStandard

Most of those limits have already been broken through and there is no political will to do anything but stamp on the accelerator and take humanity off the cliff at top speed.

Discontinuing syncthing-android

Reason is a combination of Google making Play publishing something between hard and impossible and no active maintenance. The app saw no significant development for a long time and without Play releases I do no longer see enough benefit and/or have enough motivation to keep up the ongoing maintenance an app requires even without doing much, if any, changes.

Sad to see it go. There is a fork but seems not so great considering they are looking for active maintainer. Still better than nothing. Need to check it out as it has some enhancements.

Planning to close my Google Play Developer Account. Please say hi if you are interested in obtaining the latest gplay release files from me to help in publishing this app

Anyone have any good readings or discussions on what Google Play policies are being cited here as the major obstacle? Just curious to learn more.

Edit: 20 testers policy? Sounds onerous.

the fork version works fine. if that dies, i'm hopeful some new fork will emerge. syncthing is well known and used by many, so i think as long as the original software is alive, there'll be a way to use it on your phone. heck, there's ways to run syncthing on a pocketbook e-reader, lol

"Duckquill has built in support for loading Mastodon comments see (the example on the theme site), given the link where you posted it. But I don’t much care for Mastodon ...

I prefer Lemmy, where you don’t really care about followers, as long as your content is good and posted to right community(ies). So I made my own."

Well, I'm going to reply from a Mastodon account anyway. So there : P

It may be a little overly negative, I use mastodon, I just don't find it useful to publish my stuff on

My point is that you *are* publishing your stuff on Mastodon. Along with every other piece of software that supports ActivityPub, like Lemmy does.

Thanks to the magic of the fediverse, I'm replying from Mastodon right now : )

Didn't look at the article but ya if you want to leverage SEDs then LUKS is the way to go.
in reply to Tiuku

Yup, the article is a guide for using SEDs with LUKS now that cryptsetup has support to make it easy.

in reply to schizoidman

It seems interesting, but at the same time the demos all seem to feature presses/simple gestures like stroking an object. The article's title however, at least in my opinion, implies something along the lines as we see in capacitive displays, mainly a touchpad.

Interesting tech nonetheless! Especially the plant example seems interesting, as it implies that interactions can also occur on less conventional surfaces.
