Did they abandon the Flatpak package? The Jellyfin Player Flatpak is up-to-date, but the Server package on Flathub is at 10.8.13 and no longer listed on the Jellyfin website
EDIT: Looking at an archive from earlier this year, the Flatpak was tagged as "Community", not "Official". So I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that the random packagers did not keep up with releases.

so far it seems like an over-marketed unfinished piece of vaporware. there was nothing to look at when it was first dripped months ago. or when the magical countdown stopped. or when no one received beta invites despite it being 'this week'
just seems like a lot of spamming the fed community now. happy to be proven wrong

Because wanting braindead content that you don't have to think about or form a critical opinion over is a valid request. There's a big reason the Fediverse doesn't see widespread adoption: the content sucks, it's all politics from the farther edges of every end of the spectrum and FOSSbro tech discussion that's about as insufferable as cryptobro subreddits.
If the Fediverse wants to attract more people, then it needs to start expanding into what those other people actually want. They don't want to have a furry with a Stalin profile pic explain Linux kernel to them, they want to laugh at inconsequential videos of children falling into things that they can leave a "heart" on and quickly share a link to their friend with.
If the Fediverse wants to attract more people, then it needs to start expanding into what those other people actually want.
I'm okay with more people, but not those people. We are here in the Fediverse for some degree of quality, of which furries explaining the Linux kernel is one example of kind.

Can’t see this doing well, who’s gonna want to host it and pay the bandwidth and storage costs?
I know people would be willing to do that for a YT alternative, but I don’t think there’s many people who want to shell out so some kid can post their cringe dance video.
Also, who tf gonna use it? I’d imagine Tik Tok users are the social media group that cares the least about the fediverse, open source, and privacy…

Perhaps it's one way to change that
It's just like Peertube. Cool concept in theory, but breaks down once you consider the less fun parts of it (storage volume).
Gonna be really hard to figure out how to make solid Fedi alternatives to image/video-based social media.

It’s easy block keywords so you don’t get dancing or politics, or at least, you can reduce it. The algorithm is also very good at serving your interests so if someone tells me all they’re seeing is dancing videos then it tells me they’ve been lingering on those for some reason :)
I’ve also found it a great resource for novel and practical info about:

- ADHD & Autism
- Music production with Logic Pro
- Human rights news

There are lots of reasons to want alternatives to social media mega-corps, and the people with those reasons have varied likes and hobbies.\
Even amongst the people who care about privacy, decentralization, etc, people still have varied interests. All you have to do is look at the popularity of Tiktok content about privacy, security, programming, etc.
Dude is a basement dweller, and just assumed that was the norm for everyone who shared an interest with him.
I have my own thoughts about hurdles that loops will face, but "fediverse is for snobs" isn't it.
Fair enough, but endless feeds and short form videos are also widely regarded as dangerous to mental wellbeing, so I agree with them on that point.
But I'm more interested in getting people away from the adtech platforms, so also happy to see decentralised alternatives pop up.
The great thing about decentralised social media is I'll always have my anti dark pattern folks in one corner or other.
hear me out.
The toxicity of social mefia comes from algorithms and advertising.
Lots of short videos by the community can be fun/interesting and not addictive/ brain rotting.
endless feeds of short form video is the new asbestos
that's like saying Mastodon is bad because Twitter ruined society, I mean how often do you find yourself raging endlessly at Mastodon.
I would love to have a chill way of scrolling these videos without having to live with one of the evils.
That being said i am also sceptical if this is it, I mean why do they want my email?
Everybody's heads are up their asses about this. It's a great idea for a fediverse thing.
The real issue is nobody can use it because the damn confirmation emails don't get sent.
I'm interested, and I hope it's successful.
I'm not sure how they're going to attract creators, when Tiktok already has the same features, has a larger audience, and pays... But I hope they can because I'd love to dump Tiktok for something open source.
I wonder how their FYP will work, because honestly that's a huge part of what makes Tiktok good.
I want the length limits.

Dozens killed by paramilitary RSF in Sudan’s Gezira, aid groups say
Dozens of civilians have been killed and thousands displaced in Sudan’s Gezira state, aid groups said, after several days of attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been battling the army for more than a year.A union of doctors and a youth group said the RSF attacked several villages and towns in the east-central state of Gezira, looting and vandalising public and private properties, and leaving dozens dead, The Associated Press news agency reported on Saturday.
RSF attacks in al-Sireha, a village in Gezira state, continued for three days, with 50 people killed in one day alone, according to aid groups that have been tracking the deaths and publishing the list, seen by Al Jazeera.
Fighting erupted on April 15, 2023, as a result of a power struggle between the RSF led by Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo and army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. Since then, the conflict has displaced more than 10 million people, creating one of the worst global humanitarian crises, according to data from the United Nations.
Since September, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have been pursuing a major offensive to retake areas in and around the capital, Khartoum, from the control of the RSF.
Ted Chaiban, deputy head of UNICEF, the United Nations children’s agency, called for more international attention to “the forgotten crisis” in Sudan.
In an interview with The AP on Friday, Chaiban said the war has created “one of the most acute crises in living memory” with more than 14 million people forced to flee their homes, plunging Sudan into the world’s largest displacement crisis.
About 25.6 million people – more than half of Sudan’s population – are expected to face acute hunger this year due to the conflict.
The UNICEF and the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, are calling for unimpeded access to people in need across the country.
The war has been marked by atrocities such as mass rape and “ethnic cleansing”, which the UN said amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity, particularly in the western region of Darfur, which has been facing a bitter onslaught by the RSF.

Malaysia, Ethiopia agree to strengthen bilateral ties
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met with his Malaysian counterpart on Saturday as he continued his visit to the country.Following the talks in Putrajaya, Abiy told reporters that both nations had agreed to collaborate further in several sectors including agriculture, industry and trade and investment.
"There are plenty of opportunities from both sides," he said standing alongside Malaysian Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar expressed his gratitude to Abiy for his endorsement for Malaysia's entry into the BRICS bloc of developing economies which recently concluded its summit in Russia.
The alliance that initially included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa when it was founded in 2009 has expanded to embrace Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have formally applied to become members, and several other countries have expressed interest in joining.
Malaysia was officially accepted into the organization as a “partner country."

And I would argue that explaining why people dont like the usage of "this" is not more useful than people writing "this" because of the Streisand effect we’ve witnessed and that you and I have now created is even more detrimental to a thread because it creates a distraction from the original topic. We now have a subtopic competing for brain cycles that clearly adds no value and is likely making us all stupider.

How impunity fuels Israel’s attacks on journalists in Gaza and Lebanon
Diana Buttu, a Palestinian lawyer and analyst, said Israel does not want the world to see what is happening in Gaza.“On the one hand, they’re not allowing international journalists, and on the other hand, they’re assassinating those journalists who are there,” Buttu told Al Jazeera. “And then, they’re smearing those journalists who are there and somehow labelling them as targets.”
Buttu stressed that, under international law, people can only be considered legitimate targets in war if they are combatants who engage in fighting – accusing someone of being affiliated with an armed group, whether true or not, does not make them a legitimate target.
She added that Israel is “turning international law on its head” by labelling people as members of Hezbollah and Hamas to justify their killing.

/var/lib/sonarr. Depending on what tag you've set for the image in the compose file, it would be autoupdated, or stay fixed. E.g.lscr.io/linuxserver/sonarr:latestwould get autoupdated whereaslscr.io/linuxserver/sonarr:4.0.10would keep the container at version4.0.10. When we launch Jellyfin, we are shown icons for what user, we select the user, and it opens the associated library. Similar to Netflix.

On Plex it always seemed like I could just play everything natively, but Jellyfin seems like it always wants to transcode.
Even if I enable transcoding, stuff won't play nicely because I'm currently on a Pi4 (going to switch in the coming weeks to a proper server), but Plex is fine.
ShortN0te
in reply to EtzBetz • • •Basically, when you do not run server side transcoding and instead rely on client side support you will run from time to time into issues. Jellyfin does not have the ppl to get every client to work with all the different formats on every hardware.
1080 h264/h265 does not say much about the media format. Those codec differentiate in things like Chroma (4:2:0; 4:4:4, etc) or in color depth like 8 or 10 bit. So not every h264 media file does run on the same hardware.
Audio codecs are even more complicated.
I think since i setup my hardware transcoding I ran into a not playable file once. But depending on the hardware it can be worse. On android TV you may have to play around with the settings.
I understand that this can be a deal breaker for some ppl.
