Trans people, LGBT people
Harris just said "I believe we should follow the law" when asked whether trans people should have access to gender-affirming care. This is leaving it to the states, which is essentially banning the existence of trans people in large segments of the country. She does not care about trans people or LGBT people as a whole.
Abortion rights
Roe was overturned under Biden, and Harris has not said she would stack the court or similar. She has said she would sign into law a bill passed by congress to restore reproductive freedom nationwide, but the dems almost certainly will not control the senate with a filibuster-proof majority, and even if they did they'd find some designated bad-guy who would turn coat to stop it (see: Joe Lieberman, Joe Manchin, Kyrsten Sinema). Harris will not do anything to protect abortion rights.
Ukraine
Which will lead to more Ukrainian deaths: the war coming to an end because US aid ceases, or a meatgrinder continuing for years which the Ukrainians have no chance of winning anyway? Which is more important: lines on a map, or actual human lives?
Black Lives Matter
Harris was a prosecutor. She's a fucking cop. She's VP of Joe "We have to fund the police!" Biden. She wants to build Trump's border wall. Harris does not care about black people.
Palestine
Harris fully supports the Israeli genocide of Palestinians. Her VP, Walz, has said that Israeli expansion (IE Greater Israel) is key to US interests. They may actually be to the right of Trump on this issue just because Trump doesn't have any actual political beliefs other than "make Trump richer", while Harris and the dems are rabid zionists.

When you are filtering out the young, the dumb, and those arguing in bad faith, overly simplistic is an excellent first filter. If they can pass that base level filter of rudimentary critical thinking skills, then you can feel free to enter into more nuance and subtlety.
No point in engaging with those who can't even grasp the simplest concepts.

Start the discussion on an intellectual level, and those who can't grasp it can go read until they're ready to talk.

I'm starting to think now the trolley problem should be reframed as a catch-22 / false choice / manufactured consent.

Let's say the Supreme Court decides to end gay marriage at a federal level and send it back to the states. Harris won't do shit to help people in red states, she'll just tell them to vote for Democrats in 2026/2028 but otherwise ignore them.

AFAIK there is work underway to make more Lemmy communities more like Matrix rooms, by allowing the mods of 2 or more communities on different servers to federate them, so every post or comment to one of them goes to all of them. But this too is political and complicated.

At least 124 people were killed on Saturday in attacks carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the village of Alseriha in the Gezira state of central Sudan, the Sudan Doctors Network said, Anadolu Agency reports.
The developments come just days after Abu Aqla Muhammad Ahmed Kikil, the RSF commander in Gezira, announced his defection to the Sudanese army, taking his forces with him.
Areas in eastern Gezira, Kikil’s home region, have become the base for his forces, who now fight alongside the army.

Hezbollah issues evacuation orders for northern Israeli settlers
The Islamic Resistance in Lebanon - Hezbollah, issued an evacuation order on Saturday evening, directed at Israeli settlers in 25 settlements in northern occupied Palestine, following in the footsteps of the Israeli occupation forces who had been forcing people to flee their homes in numerous areas across Lebanon.
Hezbollah, meanwhile, stated that these settlements had become military outposts where Israeli occupation forces are stationed to launch attacks on Lebanon. Consequently, Hezbollah declared them legitimate military targets for its aerial and missile forces, calling on settlers to "evacuate immediately."
"You are requested to evacuate immediately. Your settlements have become a place of deployment and settlement for the enemy military forces attacking Lebanon. As a result, they have become legitimate military targets for the air and missile forces of the Islamic Resistance," the warning read.

China leveraging Laos to link up its Southeast Asian economic interests
China aims to scale up infrastructure construction in uniquely strategic Laos to accelerate trade and investment throughout Southeast Asia as Chinese businesses scout for space to grow offshore, analysts said.Premier Li Qiang said during a four-day visit to the Southeast Asian nation earlier this month that he would work with Laotian officials to turn Laos from landlocked to “land-linked”, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Laos, relatively undeveloped and small at just 7.4 million people, matters to Beijing because it shares borders not only with China, but also with the larger Southeast Asian economies of Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
“Laos is seen as a transport hub for China to export Chinese products to the other countries in the subregion and import products from those countries to China,” said Supitcha Punya, an assistant professor of political science and public administration with Chiang Mai University in Thailand.
China would eventually add roads, airports and dry ports tethered to a 400km (249 mile), US$5.9 billion railway that was finished in 2021, the Asean+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (Amro) in Singapore said in January last year.
The additions would boost China’s economic reach in Southeast Asia for its own landlocked western regions, said Naubahar Sharif, head of public policy at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) bloc has a combined population of about 673 million, including several manufacturing hubs and some of the world’s fastest growing economies.
Laos is the only Asean nation with a direct railway route from its capital, Vientiane, to China, Sharif added.
A Bangkok-Nong Khai high-speed railway in Thailand is expected to link with the tracks in Laos to make it a “transit point”, giving China access to the Gulf of Thailand, also known as the Gulf of Siam, while also offering a “boost for seaborne trade”, Sharif said.
China is building much of the Thai railway and will help operate it.
This month, China and Laos signed a joint statement aimed at improving a “connectivity development corridor” between the two countries and Thailand, according to the official Lao News Agency.In February, Laos opened its third-largest airport, Bokeo International, which took funding from a Chinese developer.
China could use Laos to transport goods or people into Cambodia, where Chinese have invested heavily in property, analysts said.
In neighbouring Vietnam, a prime destination for Chinese manufacturers keen to sidestep the US-China trade war, officials have approved a high-speed rail project to be synced with tracks in China.
China particularly values the potential for agriculture, energy and tourism in Laos, Punya said.
Laotians, meanwhile, see China as a means to economic growth and job opportunities, the assistant professor said.

I feel bad about the Russian conscripts who are being thrown at the front line in meat wave attacks to soak up bullets. I also support the Ukrainians firing those bullets because I recognize that there is a damn war going on.
I don't have to feel ethnic or any other kind of hatred for Russian Linux developers to recognize that this is war and hobbling Russia's technology sector is a necessary part of that. Every bit of lubricant for the Russian economy ultimately equates to more death in Ukraine.

Most of these developers do work for companies that are paying them to make contributions so, it stands to reason that the kernel additions or changes are of particular use to those companies. Nothing is stopping them from continuing to make changes on their own fork for their own benefit, but that means drifting away from the mainline kernel. That adds extra work and overhead, which is the point.
I've seen nothing to suggest this has been identified as a concern, but modern warfare systems do often run on Linux. Some of these developers might already be contributing directly to the war. Also, economics are just as much a part of warfare as bullets and bombs. In this case particularly, economic factors are almost certainly going to be critical to ending the conflict.
I'm not going to take that hill because the generals haven't proven to me that it's necessary to win the war.
This isn't an isolated thing. It's a small part of the biggest sanctions effort in history. Every single sanction, can be nit-picked in just the same way. There is very little in the way of technology that can't be dual purposed into warfare, and those that can't be are still relevant to the economic pressures being applied.
I have no idea why you are so sure that the development in question isn't already connected to military drones, but it's a really weird assumption. What exactly do you think is the number one priority for Russia right now in the area of technical development? What operating system do you think powers most drones, military or otherwise?
This is absurd. Are you being serious? I'm aware how sanctions are setup in the US because I'm compelled to complete hr training on them every 8 months even though I have no interaction with anyone that would overlap with sanctions requirements. That doesn't make it any less absurd. It's also not on me to somehow categorically disprove the link between Linux contributions and military work, the onus there is and as it always should be is on the entity demanding you do something in response to it. But OK, let's say all the work on Linux coming from anyone who happens to live in or have a Russian nationality somehow goes back to the war effort. Ban work on Russian firmware or Linux compatibility with Russian hardware. Don't ban Russian people unilaterally and with force using flimsy hypothetical justifications and reductive arguments. I go back to ww1 and the role of scientists in war. They should abstain. Developers should abstains. We don't belong to the countries we live in, our work should exist for all mankind and to the betterment of society as a whole. If the US wants a trade embargo, or a corporate berlin wall I'm all for it. This is not that.
Edit: Also, not really relevent, but I would be absolutely amazed if the Russian government is somehow on the bleeding edge of linux development and actively deploying head branch builds of linux with the latest available firmware. Most of the US government still runs on windows out of sheer apathy. If they are using these contributions in drones their almost certainly backporting to a stable linux release and that means this kinda ban if it follows you're reason isn't going to have an impact until a few releases down the line and that's easily bypassable by just not upgrading linux. Russian already presumably sanctioned to older hardware (excluding self manufactured) so that isn't even a hard choice.
So, in your world, the US government is responsible to provide you with a detailed justification for the specific sanctions being applied against a foreign adversary? Keep waiting.
I really don't think you understand what's going on in the Russian economy right now. Russia has unwittingly gotten themselves embroiled in an existential conflict. (Less existential for the country than for the warlords running it.) Every expenditure or resources, natural, human, financial, etc, is being weighed against it's benefits to the war. Even basic things like their ability to feed their population are only valued because the war can't be fought without them. That's what a war economy is.
Despite all the failures of the Russian military, it took well over a year for Putin to fire his top general. The reason it took so long was that Putin trusted his general to remain loyal and not initiate a coup. Removing him was a drastic move, but the more interesting part is who replaced him. The new Russian defense minister got the job with absolutely no military training, background, or experience. His only qualification was that he is an extremely capable economist who is largely credited with helping Russia transition to a war economy and blunt the impact of western sanctions. That should tell you all you need to know about how important Russia thinks economics are to the war.

That's nice and all, but totally unrealistic. The vast majority of kernel development is done because the developers (or their sponsors) benefit from the work they do and from having that work integrated with the rest of the kernel. I don't see that as a bad thing.

There is no such thing as "Russian hardware" when it comes to computing. Russia has it's own standards for a lot of technologies, but creating a proprietary set of computing standards that's disconnected from the ecosystem of western hardware makes no sense. They manufacture some of their own computing hardware, but it's all based on the same standards that are used everywhere else.

Why? Anyone contributing to the Linux kernel is, almost by definition, at the "bleeding edge of Linux development". It may not be the bleeding edge pushing the boundaries of computer science, but it doesn't have to be. A whole lot of kernel development is pretty basic stuff aimed to satisfy particular needs or requirements. Drones benefit greatly from highly specialized power management, real time data collection, flexible networking, etc. Most are built from off the shelf hardware and consumer electronics.

The issue of drift exists with both older and newer kernels. If a particular kernel is so stable that drift isn't an issue, then it isn't a kernel that will be adding a bunch of new Russian commits anyways. If they are simply back-porting it themselves, then their inability to commit to the main Linux branches is irrelevant. In the scenario, the whole discussion is moot.

The part about the moral case against Russia isn't an opinion. Here's the Financial Times a year ago:

Just four weeks before the Hamas assault on Israel, leaders from the US, EU and western allies attended the G20 summit in New Delhi and asked developing nations to condemn Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian civilians in order to uphold respect for the UN charter and international law. Many of those officials told the Financial Times they have had the same argument read back at them in demands for condemnation of Israel’s retaliatory assault on Gaza, and of its decision to restrict water, electricity and gas supplies there.

So, to be clear, the T-72, a decades-old platform, is performing much better than the faulty systems that NATO has lavished upon Ukraine. Ukraine is not a member but is strategically important to NATO because it's strategically important to the Russian empire's restoration, which we kinda want to prevent. Plus they'll be a powerful ally once they can join, which they really want to nowadays.
Now the US could go full isolationist, but if a Russian-Chinese alliance takes over all of Eurasia, y'all are really going to lose out on a lot of trade and access to resources, plus might actually be susceptible to invasion if you have no allies left.

Do you think a single Ukrainian wants to live under Russian rule now? The few I've spoken to don't even want to be spoken to in the language and that was even BEFORE 2014.

So many Russians abroad praise the homeland while enjoying the relative freedom that other countries bring to the table. Yet none seem to understand that others don't want to live in Russia either.
Ukrainians tend to be proud of their national identity - which, yes, I know, only Russians are allowed to be, but apparently many people don't seem to care - so it's pretty hard to convince them to go back to being second class citizens of yet another attempt at a Russian Empire.
