American military and intelligence officials have concluded that the war in Ukraine is no longer a stalemate as Russia makes steady gains, and the sense of pessimism in Kyiv and Washington is deepening.

So what's next? A Vietnam and Afghanistan style rapid collapse of the US-supported government? Something entirely different?

1975 Fall of Saigon

2021 Fall of Kabul

202X Fall of Kyiv...?

It must be quite the shocking turn of events for those who were convinced Ukraine was going to win.

in reply to تحريرها كلها ممكن

I think it might get partitioned like Germany did. It would help the Western narrative engine to draw those parallels and it would allow the West to continue operating and building power while requiring Russia's constant attention.

Russia cannot occupy Ukraine and is unlikely to physically invade and occupy Kyiv directly. It is also unlikely that Russia will spend the resources to do to Ukraine what the US did to Korea.

in reply to freagle

While Russia is unlikely to occupy all of Ukraine, they're certainly capable of demilitarizing Ukraine and putting in a Russia friendly government in charge of whatever remains of Ukraine in the end. Ultimately, the core motivation for the war was to keep NATO out of Ukraine. Stopping short of that would not solve the underlying problem.
in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

I think that's actually going to be pretty difficult. It would be a true triumph of counterintelligence to pull that off.
in reply to freagle

It's worth keeping in mind that this was a war of attrition. Everybody who was motivated to fight against Russia signed up to join the army early on. Most of those people are now dead. The AFU is now reduced to grabbing people off the street and forcing them to fight. Most people who are left in Ukraine just want the war to be over and they don't actually care whether Ukraine is going to be under Russian or western influence going forward. The only option NATO has left at this point is to go directly to war with Russia.

How a Secluded 1984 Conference Forged Israel's Unprecedented Influence Over US Media

in reply to NightOwl

i'm convinced that hasbara is the reason why we banned tiktok and i sometimes wish my own government put this month thought into anything.

there's no way these guys couldn't see the parallels between hasbara and "1984" and it makes you wonder what arguments they used to justify doing it to themselves to help them ignore that fact that they've effectively turned themselves into the ministry of information or the ministry of peace.

AppImage of MediaElch won't detect my USB Drive

I downloaded the AppImage file from the GitHub Repo and I did check that my USB Drive is connected which I can access it through my File Manager as well as Gnome's Disk Utility.

Oddly, when I tried to set an directory for Movies and TV-Shows in MediaElch, it acts like I hadn't plug my USB drive.

in reply to Matty

Usually this is a problem of permissions on the mounted-folder. Even with the jellyfin server you need to change the permissions to get the server to see the mounted folder. I expect it's similar with kodi.
in reply to Eugenia

Using Kodi on Rasberry Pi, I was able to open USB Drive's directory so I wasn't sure if it related to AppImage for some reason not detecting it.

US asked Lebanon to declare unilateral ceasefire with Israel, sources say

BEIRUT, Nov 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. asked Lebanon to declare a unilateral ceasefire with Israel to revive stalled talks to end hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, a senior Lebanese political source and a senior diplomat said - a claim denied by Lebanon's prime minister.

But a unilateral declaration was seen as a non-starter in Lebanon, the sources said, where it would likely be equated with a surrender.

Hochstein told them that if Hezbollah unilaterally declared a ceasefire, he "could have something to present" to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a diplomatic initiative.

Russia faces a crisis regardless if Putin ends or continues the war in Ukraine, economist says

cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/21521751

Summary

Regardless of Putin’s decision regarding the war in Ukraine, Russia’s economy is facing a crisis due to factors such as sanctions, a shrinking sovereign wealth fund, and a labor shortage. The war has boosted growth, but Russia cannot sustain it without significant economic consequences.

I don't get it, what's so bad about boilerplate?
in reply to ddplf

Boilerplate is bad because it's fundamentally just noise. When you read the code you want to be able to tell what the purpose of the code is and what the problem it solves. Ideally, code should be expressing that as clearly as possible. Having a lot of boilerplate is typically an indication that the language semantics don't allow you to express the solution in a clear way and you have to write a lot of incidental code. The more code you have to read the more cognitive overhead there is in understanding it and keeping it all in your head.

VMware Workstation Shifting From Proprietary Code To Using Upstream KVM

reshared this

in reply to Atemu

I've questions about this.

People are talking about it like it is the greatest thing ever, however, isn't this yet another result of the Broadcom acquisition? After firing a bunch of people , now this. Maybe they just don't want to maintain the "existing proprietary virtualization code" so they're moving to KVM. Less costs, less people.

in reply to TCB13

I honestly don't know how this could turn out.

It could be an amazing change that results in much more progress for hardware acceleration on guests of various types (since that is what vmware is good at) in kvm...

Or it could mean that they are dropping that feature from vmware altogether.

Regardless, I like this change because it means I would be able to run vmware machines and libvirt kvm machines at the same time, at least when I am forced to use vmware workstation.

I also dislike proprietary software in general, so I think less proprietary software and more FOSS is a good thing.

Yeah but VMware was good. And I'm not seeing Broadcom investing into porting the "proprietary goodness" of VMware into KVM. I just see then looking at KVM and saying "that's good enough" and seeing it a cost reduction measure.

in reply to Atemu

That means migrating away from VMWare, which is a must for many nowadays, will be even easier. Good news!

in reply to FooBarrington

Well if it were closed source, it would be harder to repackage proprietary apps because you would not know how the snap "root filesystem" translates to $DISTRO root filesystem.

Because some apps are only packaged as snaps so if you want them to be accessible to users, you have to install snapd. Flatpak can still be the default which on non-Canonical distros already is. Which why I don't even worry about snap becoming the standard.
