i drag out my morning caffeination for as long as possible for exactly this reason; my tingly nerves are a welcomed distraction from the knowledge that i'm applying my craft to further enshitify this planet just so that i can keep a roof over my head and put food on the table.

needless to say i'm looking forward to it ending.

Cant access the article, here's a dumb AI summary
"The article by David Fickling on Bloomberg Law discusses China's electric vehicle (EV) subsidy system. Fickling argues that China can't reduce its EV subsidies because it isn't actually paying them in full. While the Chinese government provides financial incentives to encourage the growth of the EV industry, much of the support is being delayed or deferred, and in some cases, the payments are not made at all. The article highlights the gap between China's ambitious EV targets and the practical realities of its financial commitments, pointing out that many EV companies rely on the promise of subsidies, even though the actual funds have often not been disbursed as expected. This reliance on delayed payments could undermine the sustainability of the industry and the broader transition to electric vehicles."

That followed an announcement for their battery business if I'm not mistaken. Which isn't what Musk was trying to pump.

Malaysia prepares draft resolution to expel β€œIsrael” from the United Nations

β€œThe draft resolution is in the negotiation process and it is expected to be tabled at the UN General Assembly for approval soon,” Malaysian News Agency quoted Ibrahim as saying Monday during a session of the Malaysian Parliament.

He added that once approved, the resolution is expected to be a legal basis for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to continue providing aid for the Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territories and in other countries.

On October 31, 2024, Malaysia became a member of the Core Group tasked with preparing a resolution requesting an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Israel’s obligation to allow United Nations organizations to conduct their activities.

The purpose of the UN is to bring all countries no matter how evil together. The UN is useful - to the extent is useful at all - because of the larger number of nations that get together in peace to talk. I'm sure China loves this as it helps their efforts to keep Taiwan out. This is just another attempt to destroy the UN.
in reply to bluGill

It also legitimizes an increasingly isolated settler colony. Allowing Israel to attack UN aid workers unpunished is in violation of everything the UN stands for. Israel is giving top down order to kill UN workers and designates a UN organization as terrorists. It is going rogue beyond comprehension.
in reply to bluGill

Israel is destroying the UN, what are you talking about? They aren't just evil,. they're blatantly violating all international laws and attacking UN peace keepers and declaring UN agencies to be terrorist organizations.

If Israel does not face consequences for what it is doing then the UN will go the way of the League of Nations.

their effort to keep Taiwan out

Lmao. Does California get its own UN seat next? Maybe Alaska while we're at it

in reply to Grapho

Remind me again: What legislative power does China hold over Taiwan?
And can the Brits reclaim their former territory too?
in reply to belastend

It is recognized as a part of China by almost every country on earth including the US (despite its endless shit stirring on all fronts, all they're good for nowadays). The ROC, by the way, also claims mainland China and itself to be the same territory, and their constitution reflects that too, what they disagree on is whether they're the legitimate government of all of China or the PRC is.

If you think Taiwan is the legitimate government of all of China you need to come back to the real world from wherever the state department lured you into.

in reply to Grapho

I doubt they think that. You're being ridiculous. Taiwan is de facto independent, and there is some push over there to declare independence officially. The ROC is of a different era at the end of the day.

The USA doesn't officially recognize the ROC but it is US law that consular, travel and business relations between them. Nancy Pelosi travelled to Tawain only a couple years ago.

Anyway, the rights for all people to self-govern themselves should come first over all that.

in reply to Niquarl

I guess it's fortunate that the world doesn't draw borders according to where Nancy Pelosi decides to go. Can't help but notice that all this talk of "the right to self government" is always appended to paragraphs firmly talking about what the US wants and the US does.

Yeah, we know the US government is a hypocritical liar. We know they have been putting up their puppets to talk about independence now that it's become clear China won't go the way of the USSR. The fact is, both parties stick to the one china principle, and if it weren't for the US, Taiwan would have been as integrated with the PRC as Guangzhou or Shenzhen. Ask Chiang Kai Shek and the CIA what they thought of the Taiwanese people's right to self government in the 60s.

Can’t help but notice that all this talk of β€œthe right to self government” is always appended to paragraphs firmly talking about what the US wants and the US does.

I am not a US citizen and there are plenty of instances of the US government not supporting self-determination. I was talking about myself and I would hope most people's opinion worldwide, not some governement.

The PRC didn't invade Tawia when they the ROC's army fled there. Is that because of the USA? Taiwan has been seperate from China for almost eighty years now, that's a long time!

in reply to Grapho

Neither the PRC nor the ROC control both China and Taiwan. There is China and there is Taiwan. The realities on the ground reflect that.
in reply to bluGill

How many more UN personell does Israel have to kill before they'll take this seriously? And even the US does not formally recognize Taiwan.
in reply to bluGill

Hmm. Interesting. Unity and purity do tug in opposite directions.
in reply to bluGill

You shouldn't get to participate in an international organization while murdering the aid workers employed by said organization.

This is just another attempt to destroy the UN.

Burh Israel literally, explicitly called for the UN to be destroyed, and named them a terrorist organization (and of course also played the antisemitic card).

in reply to bluGill

Gotta love reflexive sinophobia for no reason, while China has been observably working for the UN all the time.
in reply to bluGill

I agree, but the UN is useful only when countries pay at least lip service to its decisions. Israel is attacking UN aid workers. Anyway, they won't get kicked as long as the US defends them, so it's just a symbolic vote.

in reply to geneva_convenience

Stochastic terrorism is a real thing though - and hate speech against a minority is one of the possible ways fascism can take root in a society.

Germany learned this the hard way how easy it is to overtake a country that was previously one of the most liberal and modern societies.
That's why hate speech against minorities and holocaust denial are forbidden and harshly punished here - and that's probably one of the reasons why other countries in Europe had their far-right surges in recent years quite a bit earlier since russia had to be more creative about dividing the population

in reply to Hannes

Advocating for violence and hate speech is fully protected. As long as it is against "terrorists". Whether these people are evil is of little relevance.

You can publicly advocate for the killing of Sinwar or Putin. But not Netanyahu or Trump

You are also not allowed to support groups your government designates as terrorists. Once again; you can support Israeli violence. You cannot support Hamas violence. The past was no different. Supporting groups such as the ANC or the Vietcong was illegal. Because that is terrorism.

The government controls free speech. They simply added a middle man: the word "terrorism".
