We can't bring the Democrats to where they need to be, they serve their donors, and their donors would rather the Democrats lose than shift left. The DNC cannot be infiltrated either, it sustains itself purely from its donors, and as such needs establishment figures that prop up the system with fundraising, while radicals are cast aside.
This is why theory is important.
i agree that theory matters and that the dnc cannot be changed.
i use "democrats" to distinguish the people from from the dnc and i've learned that democrats mostly align with all leftists views but american indoctrination prevents them from learning and that's my biggest source of anxiety.
i also agree that you can't bring democrats to where they need to be because "you can bring a horse to water but you can't make it drink" is true and this is one of those hurdles that add to the anxiety; there doesn't seem to be a way around it since it requires appeals to reason in a reality that uses pleasure, emotion, and social ostracization to combat that reasoning.
It isn't "American indoctrination," the ideas held by people are largely determined by their social relations and material conditions. Understanding how people come to their conclusions and the beliefs they hold is a fundamental aspect of theory, because it illuminates how we can change those beliefs.
Liberals generally want the same things Leftists do, but don't understand the systems around them, their trajectories, or their weaknesses, and thus not how to overcome them or what needs to be done.
you and duckduckgo just taught me that "american indoctrination" is the wrong descriptor since it's already a well known phrase that describes something else; i used like i used my dnc/democrat distinction, it was my own personal shorthand until now.
what i named "american indoctrination" (as of 30 minutes or so ago) described my impression of modern day zeitgeist of the american middle-to-upper middle class. those two classes mostly share similar material conditions and usually do not have social relations with anyone outside of those two sub-classes. (they also tend to ostracize the lower middle class and working poor). the french used to call them petite bourgeoisie and most are not by american standards but they unquestionably are so by global south and empirical periphery standards; they're also the democrat's most loyal voters and most of the ones in that latter upper-middle-class category are republicans.
You're completely right, and I apologize for my insubordination. It won't happen again, I promise.

Find a way to make money where you sell your services directly to the customer. No boss or job. Flexible schedule. Good money.
Yes, drug dealer is one such, but there are others.
I found I couldn't do it. I have a set of traumas that means I go into a weird fugue state where I massively undercharge by an order of magnitude and take on every liability. I think it's some sort of rejection dissociation thingy, or like just trying to end the situation as quickly as possible. This meant I had made very little money and promised a lot, and also came to hate my hobby.
Now that I have a job, the stakes are much lower, I get regular pay, and I also pretty much never have to negotiate directly with clients.
It took a really long time to get that job though, given that job searching also requires skills I do not have

For what it’s worth, Hezbollah has 13 of 128 seats in Lebanon’s parliament, and the CIA World Factbook says about a third of Lebanese are Christian, so I’m going to disagree with your characterization.
Hamas hasn’t held elections in nearly 20 years, so I’m going to disagree with you again. Israel’s accelerated genocide may have galvanized support for Hamas recently, but I haven’t looked into that.

And it's not Hamas which holds elections, but rather the Palestinian authority, presided by the leader of Fatah (opponent of Hamas) who has been impeding elections since 2006 because his party is losing popularity.

Reduce maximum comment depth to 50 by @nutomic #5009
Goddamnit. I fucking hate paginating comments and would rather just fetch all the top level ones and control the depth based on the number of total comments. I also hate that they see the API through the lens of Lemmy-UI (IMO the worst way to interact with Lemmy).
through the lens of Lemmy-UI (IMO the worst way to interact with Lemmy).
Why?
I've got a laundry list of reasons, but suffice it to say that pretty much every third party client I've ever used has been miles ahead in UX and polish.
One example is that if the API throws any error response and lands you on an "Error" page (post removed, user deleted, etc), the whole UI is stuck there until you refresh the whole page (e.g clicking "back" updates the URL to your previous page, but you're still seeing the error).
I don't understand your comment. This is a fix for a crash in the backend, I don't see how it relates to lemmy-ui because it seems like any frontend would cause a crash with this issue if it's hitting the same API route. Also 50 is a lot. Finding a post with 50 comments is rare, finding one with a chain of over 50 in a row is even more rare. Such a thread would be clunky to display in the main comment tree anyways.
This isn't just a comment with 50 replies, this is 50 levels of indentation.
It's also funny to criticize Lemmy for being biased towards its own frontend when it probably has more (active and working) frontends than any competitor (Reddit, Mbin)
Looks like a small release, but has some IMO pretty interesting changes, like
Allow users to view their own removed/deleted communities
and
Add backend check to enforce hierarchy of admins and mods

Lemmy v0.19.6 Release
Filtered word: nsfw
What is Lemmy?
Lemmy is a self-hosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.
Changes
This release took a long time to complete due to a major performance problem which brought lemmy.ml to a crawl every time we tried to deploy the new version. It took a lot of testing (in production) to narrow it down to a single commit, and finally fix the problem.

We (@dessalines and @nutomic) have been working full-time on Lemmy for over five years. This is largely thanks to support from NLnet foundation, as well as donations from individual users.
If you like using Lemmy, and want to make sure that we will always be available to work full time building it, consider donating to support its development. A recurring donation is the best way to ensure that open-source software like Lemmy can stay independent and alive, and helps us grow our little developer co-op to support more full-time developers.

I opened up an issue on the postgres issue tracker because I've never seen anything like this before, and I'm sure we're not the only one to run into this production-breaking migration.

My guy that is the best weekend to have. What games are you going to be playing? My partner and I are replaying DoS2 and I'm attempting to get into Dwarf Fortress (Steam version) although it's proving rather challenging to say the least.
Have a fantastic weekend and remember to take it easy!
I've been playing a lot of Minetest. I have Minecraft, but I really love the old school vibes of Minetest. Plus, there are way too many materials in Minecraft. Minetest is super simple. Love it for that.
I've been pining for Stardew Valley again after putting it down for a while. I also started a Thousand Year Door run in August so I might actually finish that. Or maybe some old school Animal Crossing if I'm gonna be couch gaming on the Wii.
I started Earthbound last year, and I've really been wanting to sink the time into it, but I really think some kind of handheld emulator would be the best way to experience it. I've got an old PSP I think would make a great handheld NES/SNES emulator.
I've also been wanting to revisit the original PS1 Resident Evil trilogy, which I have on my PS3.
tbh I'm spoiled for choice and I don't know where to start lmao

Europe Can’t Fund ‘Lost’ War in Ukraine Without US, Orban Says
Europe won’t be able to finance Ukraine’s defenses against Russia’s invasion on its own if the US withdraws support under Donald Trump’s next presidency, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Friday.Orban said recent events vindicated the conclusions from his controversial July diplomatic mission to Kyiv, Moscow and Beijing and showed Ukraine was losing the war.
“The Americans are going to get out of this war,” Orban, who is hosting a European Union summit in Budapest on Friday, said on public radio. “Europe can’t finance this war on its own.”

I don't even need an article to refute all of that - Russia attacked a neighbor unprovoked, NATO has attacked NOBODY ever.
Russia attacked a neighbor unprovoked
I just showed you any number of Western media sources on how it was provoked, but here’s another from Jeffrey Sachs: The War in Ukraine Was Provoked—and Why That Matters to Achieve Peace
NATO has attacked NOBODY ever.
For just two examples, NATO bombed the city of Belgrade for 78 straight days, and it destroyed Libya.
If your ideas of provocation are the same as the article you provided, you're going to have to do better.
There were in fact two main U.S. provocations. The first was the U.S. intention to expand NATO to Ukraine and Georgia in order to surround Russia in the Black Sea region by NATO countries (Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Georgia, in counterclockwise order).
- Surely even Russia understands why people would want to expand and join NATO when they're attacking people who are not members
The second was the U.S. role in installing a Russophobic regime in Ukraine by the violent overthrow of Ukraine’s pro-Russian President, Viktor Yanukovych, in February 2014.
- Surely even Russia understands why people would want to have and be a Russophobic regime when they're attacking people who are not violent. The protests against Yanukovych were peaceful until his regime turned on the protesters.
But why am I wasting my time arguing with you when you're obviously here for some reason to carry water for Russia?
The protests against Yanukovych were peaceful until his regime turned on the protesters.
That is not what happened. It is now known that that was in fact a false flag attack by CIA-backed Banderite fascists. It is also now known that the “peaceful protest” was not entirely grassroots, but rather astroturfed.
But why am I wasting my time arguing with you when you’re obviously here for some reason to carry water for Russia?
But why am I wasting my arguing with you when you’re obviously here for some reason to carry water for imperialists? History has misjudged Jeffery Sachs according to... Jeffery Sachs!
Let's be real, he's the main guy pushing the "NATO expansion" theory of Russian aggression everywhere, and it exists mainly to cover for his own crimes.
What's more likely: that Russian revanchism came from anger over some arcane treaty negotiations, or that it came from the absolute collapse in material condition, civil society, population, daily lived experience and life expectancy that Russians experienced as Sachs and his evil clients dismantled the once-great civilization for their own enrichment? What do you think Marx's assessment of those two theories would be?
Sachs is a bag man. He helped the oligarchs destroy Russia and then he made himself useful to the new ruler when they were gone. He also spends a lot of time in Beijing and has a lot of good things to say about Xi as well. The guy's a serpent.
What’s more likely: that Russian revanchism came from
Well there’s your problem: you believe the imperial core’s narrative that this is about “Russian revanchism” and not about decades of NATO expansion or Western Ukrainian fascists terrorizing eastern Ukrainians for almost a decade.
Believe what you like, but you don’t seem to be winning any hearts and minds here, and hardly anyone reads this far down conversation threads, anyway.
NATO has attacked NOBODY ever.
This isn't true, unless Arabs aren't people. Being a liberal we probably aren't people to you so whatever crimes NATO committed doesn't count.
Edit: I always forget Yugoslavia, a European country that NATO attacked. The US even bombed the Chinese embassy there en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_S…
Please tell me this is sarcasm. The fact that there have been so much consistent reporting over such a long period of time about NATO and Ukraine means it absolutely needs to be considered.
I don’t even need an article to refute all of that - Russia attacked a neighbor unprovoked, NATO has attacked NOBODY ever.
Again, please tell me this is satire. NATO has attacked multiple countries over the years. But also, since the advent of nuclear weapons, firing the first shot stopped being the standard. Because the first shot can now be a total annihilation shot, no country is capable of having a strategy that judges threats only by who fired the first shot. It must be judged by who is establishing the positioning to undermine security. Russia is not deploying nuclear capabilities around the world. The USA is deploying nuclear capabilities around the world, and in Europe it is doing so through NATO. This may be a shock to you, but deploying nuclear capabilities to undermine the security of another nation is NOT an act of peace.
You don't understand anything about military reality, let alone actual motivations.
The CIA itself reports and has been reporting for years that Putin has no expansionist ambitions politically and no expansionist capabilities militarily.
There's a reason why the Russian military has not tried to take Kiev and it's because defending supply lines across the wide open plains of Ukraine is incredibly difficult and costly.
Russia is not capable of taking all of Eastern Europe and holidng and it has no plans or intentions to do so.

stock up for itself to defend the next Russian incursion.
As long as NATO stops its incursions, I don’t see why European states would need to do that.

The Eurozone is structurally neoliberal, austerian, and anti-Keynesian, and Europe—which was already greatly de-industrialized—is right now further de-industrializing thanks to their self-imposed sanctions against Russia (and thanks to their NATO “partner” blowing up their gas pipeline), which has raised energy prices.
Orban is correct.
For all the people here "supporting Ukraine" because you know, if Putin captures Ukraine then he will genocide Ukrainians and all that - this is exactly the same narration that Zelensky's regime is using to kidnap people and send them to the meatgrinder (kill them). A video from Kharkiv where TCC attempts to kidnap people from a bus scaring them with "Russian World" coming to Ukraine: files.catbox.moe/c72hez.MP4
People in the bus are accusing them of being "a traitor to the motherland" and telling them to go fuck themselves. But you know better what those people should do, right? They all should go and die for your wild fantasies of "but but but Putin will invade the whole world if we don't stop him (well, not you personally of course, why would you go and fight your wars, but you know, Ukrainians)".
After all, Zelensky said that Ukrainians are willing to fight, and he would never lie, right? All the videos, articles in your western medias about people NOT wanting to fight but still being exterminated by Zelensky's regime, etc are fakes.

Fuck the government unless that government is a fascist one with a dictator, then that is okay of course
What? I just criticized a fascist government with a dictator, and you accuse me of not doing that? 🤦♂
And what is "insane" in my comment?
Ukranian governement is not fascist, nor with a dictator. If they werent invaded by a fascist imperialist government, they would have had elections by now. They don't have them, because the polling places would be shelled by orcs, as they always shell civilians.
Posting a random video, with a story, without providing a single fucking source (that isn't russian propaganda). You also insinuated zelenski is exterminating his people, which is insane
Ukranian governement is not fascist, nor with a dictator.
It is both. Zelensky's regime ticks almost every (or just every) description of fascism from wikipedia. He is a dictator. Even your comment in the next sentences doesn't DISPROVE it, you merely try to JUSTIFY it.
Posting a random video, with a story, without providing a single fucking source (that isn't russian propaganda).
I (re)posted dozens of such videos already, where my compatriots who haven't managed to escape Zelensky's murderous regime either fight kidnapping attempts from TCC, or try to escape or are getting caught and busified.
This was described countless times in western media lemonde.fr/en/international/ar… and I actually just found out it is also described in wikipedia now, including the word busification en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrain… and yet there is always someone to deny it. As for my sources, I mainly take it from Ukrainian telegram channels, where people post those from first sources.

But Ukrainians are Russian bots now, right? How dare we, not willing to die for your interests?
You also insinuated zelenski is exterminating his people, which is insane
Why? He literally forbade people from leaving the country, kidnaps people one by one off the streets and sends them to their deaths. How is this not an extermination? Every moment he remains in power is a moment he exterminates more and more Ukrainians, if he won't be stopped he will kill everyone.
EU and China Tout Progress on Negotiations to Avoid EV Tariffs
The European Union and China said they made some progress after a week of technical talks in Beijing aimed at scaling back or reversing tariffs that the bloc applied to electric vehicles made in China. The EU and China have been seeking an agreement on so-called price undertakings — a complex mechanism to control prices and volumes of exports, used to avoid tariffs.
China’s invitation to negotiate in person was seen a sign of some momentum in the talks, according to people familiar with the matter.
Several rounds of talks didn’t yield a solution that meet the EU’s strict requirements, including alignment with WTO rules and compensating for the full effect of the duties. The 27-nation bloc also wants to ensure it can monitor compliance.
Negotiations will continue at a technical level next week, both sides said.
Argentine President Milei fires foreign minister after vote to lift embargo against Cuba
BUENOS AIRES, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Argentina's President Javier Milei on Wednesday replaced Foreign Affairs Minister Diana Mondino after she voted in favor of lifting the U.S. embargo against Cuba at the United Nations.
Milei, a libertarian who took office in late 2023, is unabashedly pro-United States and has taken a cooler stance toward leftist trade partners in the region and overseas, including by taking steps to distance Argentina from Cuba and Venezuela.
Earlier on Wednesday, the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly called on the United States to end its decades-long sanctions regime on Cuba, in a non-binding resolution opposed only by the U.S. and Israel.
Milei, who has said that he wants Argentina to be in line with the U.S. and Israel, shared a post on social media from a lower house lawmaker praising his government for "not supporting nor being an accomplice of dictators."

Captain Ancap is useful for exactly one thing: whatever he does, the opposite is always the right thing to do.
He's the Argentine version of Piers Morgan's opinions, except the latter is at least right about gun control.
I wish the United States would end it's embargo with Cuba. The moves toward doing that were, IMHO, one of the bright spots of the Obama Administration.
As a libertarian myself Milei is an idiot for following the United States on this. True libertarians, not those Mises Caucus assholes, are generally not okay with these kinds of trade barriers.
Alternative implication is you simply shat down for assertive dominance but with you pants fully removed like some maniac and then accidentally dropped those pants in a semi-ironic twists.

i used to as part of my weekend job working in an old hospital have to walk the breadth of it and at some point decided that i would try to use every single bathroom in the place. Over the course of months i found many cool nooks and quiet bathrooms but i never finished the mission because i found the PERFECT bathroom.
in the middle of an access hallway, up some narrow stairs, was a dead-end office. The only entrance was this one stairwell. Sun-facing windows looked out over the roof of the building and west, shining in on a bank of training computers. smell of warm dust and absolute quiet.
someone knew of it, cuz there was always toilet paper, but in my many trips to that special place i never saw a soul. Something about that place i can't describe to you, the vibe, the feel. it was perfect. I abandoned my efforts to find better and instead would walk past other open bathrooms just to use that one again.
I still think about that room sometimes. Never been paid to poo in a better one.
I've often that about that if I could design a house, I'd have a room just like this. Like there would be a section of the house that was tower like and the only way to get to the room at the top would be to take an exterior balcony-like-staircase from the second floor to the room in question - the sole room on the "third floor".
There's just something about a room like that that makes it fell so isolated, peaceful and serene. And the exterior access makes it feel like a little adventure getting there. Like if the weather were bad you might opt not to go there because it would mean gearing up to make the trip.
I've fantasized about this.
I had some friends who actually DID build a secret room behind a bookshelf, where they had their home theatre or something like that I forget (they were more like close coworkers of my wife than my own friends, but they were super nice).
