Anyone remember Biden throwing a hissy fit over Iran and Saudi Arabia's reproachment?
Now there's indications that the China-brokered peace deal wasn't just a photo-op. Saudi, Iranian senior military officials discuss defense cooperation.
Saudi Arabia has been a loyal US ally and for decades; and it is still deep in the US camp financially and militarily. I want this defense cooperation to be everything it can be, but I fear that the Saudi government isn't ready yet to distance itself from US interests.
Pentagon stunned by Trump's nomination of Fox News host as defense secretary
President-elect Donald Trump stunned the Pentagon and the broader defense world by nominating Fox News host Pete Hegseth to serve as his defense secretary, tapping someone largely inexperienced and untested on the global stage to take over the world’s largest and most powerful military.

It's not flawed, it's been working exactly as it was intended our entire lives. Unless you were alive for WW2, the purpose of the military has been to spread misery and death. I'd call it one of the most evil institutions in the face of the Earth.
I'm not optimistic. Trump won't be allowed to destroy the military. He will weaken it, though, and that can only be a good thing.
Hence, saving the world from the Pentagon.
Right…i think the metaphor train has derailed here.
What possible action do you think the military could be ordered to do, that will harm its capability to wage war, and will not result in even more innocent people getting killed than the regular levels of evil? Or is this a ‘acceptable collateral damage as long as its not me’ type of thing?
Those heroes did what America needed to keep the filthy traitor from getting more American intelligence killed off.
This time the traitor will be able to kill Americans for his real bosses with zero impunity. Congrats magats.
t’s not stupidity, it was a clear option between something the American people know does not work, and something that might work.
There is no reasonable expectation that Trump would "work" for anyone outside of some very wealthy and grifters. So, yes, voting for Trump is stupid.

duty to disobey unlawful orders
How often does this happen?
How have I figured out that we are under active Russian attack and takeover and the Pentagon hasn't?
I'm not stunned. This is his plan.
This is how we are checkmated into civil war OR Putin takeover.
Either we let Trump/Elon stay in office and Putin takes over that way. Before Jan 20, they will all be releasing increasingly inflammatory information to incite a civil war. If we don't go to war, Putin will finish taking us over and will have access to our resources and military. With that he will literally take over the world.
Well there is no reasonable expectation that voting for Harris improves anything given her explicit statement she’s going to be just Biden in a wig.

Nope. They did their part to try and save America from the enemy within.
Unfortunately that treasonous enemy is back and is now carrying out its final attack to finish destroying America.
For one thing, the duty to disobey unlawful orders goes all the way to the lowest E1.
History has shown that these are very seldom adhered to, and that adhering to them is a career-limiting—and even freedom-limiting—move. The whole War on Terror torture regime is just one example in the post-WWII era.

Withdrawing from NATO, I could see Trump entertaining that (wouldn't actually happen).
Fire a bunch of the top leadership? For sure. That would both be something Trump could "order the military to do," as well as something he might do, and it would also harm the US military's capability to wage war.
Zero out Pentagon funding? Not possible for trump to do alone, but depending on the congressional make up, it could be done and would severely limit the ability of the US Military to wage war. They could even do it without affecting enlisted personnel enrollment. The Pentagon has their own funding 100% separate from military spending.
Could also deny all future discretionary spending for the military/pentagon.
"would you rather have nothing to eat, or poison?"
If you eat nothing, maybe you can figure out a better solution with your remaining time. If you eat poison, you're probably going to be too sick (or dead) to improve things.
Trump is poison.
Also Biden did improve some things, so it's less "nothing" and more "some crackers". Sure, a full meal would be better.

Appreciate it, I remember reading many years ago that after WW2, most countries agreed to sign into law that soldiers were legally obligated to disobey unlawful orders and report the person who gave the order to their superiors, but that the US was one of the nations that didn't.
But a quick search brings up nothing but articles talking about what you posted, so I can't find any info on it. I wonder if in other countries it's enshrined outside of military law, and that's the distinction? I have no clue.

Sunday Guardian, Sep. 15: Documents show U.S. set in motion plan to oust [Bangladesh’s] Hasina
The plan to remove Sheikh Hasina as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh was set in motion in early 2019, documents provided to The Sunday Guardian indicate, and as is being claimed by her, it was executed by government funded agencies operating from the United States. After Mongolia (1996), Haiti (2001) and Uganda (2021), Bangladesh became the latest victory for the US-based International Republican Institute (IRI), which was successfully able to bring about a regime change in Dhaka.
The IRI, as per internal documents provided to The Sunday Guardian show, was implementing the broader objectives of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The documents also show how the project was necessary to counter-balance India’s “interference”.
The Washington-based IRI’s stated objective is to “promote democracy through supporting democratic institutions, political parties, civil society, and electoral processes” and it serves as an implementing partner for USAID funded projects aimed at enhancing democratic governance. The IRI is one of the four core institutes of NED, alongside the National Democratic Institute (NDI), the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), and the Solidarity Center.
Sunday Guardian, Nov. 10: Biden administration backed organisations plotting colour revolution in Cambodia’
Documents and internal communications shared with The Sunday Guardian have indicated and claimed that a colour revolution, similar to what was witnessed in Bangladesh, was recently attempted and is still being attempted in Cambodia by the United States-based and -backed civil society and government groups.
As per internal emails, reports and documents shared with The Sunday Guardian, a cocktail of agencies situated in the US and other countries, in collaboration with political dissenters in Cambodia used the issue of Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Area (CLV-DTA) agreement to push the Cambodian government to the back foot and subsequently execute a long standing operation to remove the incumbent government from power and install a pro-Washington face in Phnom Penh.

Turkey severs all relations with Israel, says Erdogan
Turkey has severed all ties with Israel, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Wednesday.
Erdogan made the comments to journalists aboard his plane following visits to Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan.
“The government of the Republic of Turkey, under the leadership of Tayyip Erdogan, will not continue or develop relations with Israel,” Erdogan said.
“[Our ruling coalition] is resolute in its decision to cut ties with Israel, and we will maintain this stance in the future as well.”
Despite imposing a trade embargo on Israel in May, Ankara continues to maintain diplomatic relations with the country.
Although the Turkish government formally recalled its ambassador last year for consultations, Turkish diplomatic missions in Tel Aviv remain open and operational.
Similarly, Israel evacuated its embassy in Ankara last year, citing regional security threats.

Thanks!
I went with twilight ambient switches, might add soft o-rings under the keycaps later (I have been using those switches and the o-rings idea on another board and I love it, so quiet).
For a while I considered putting some sunset for the tactility and the memories of membrane keyboards, but didn’t as I don’t really like tactile switches (for now).
I didn’t but that’s a cool idea!
I also had the idea of using real floppy disks as backplates, since I have a few lying around.

U.S. won’t withhold aid to Israel, walking back threat over conditions in Gaza
The United States will not withhold military aid from Israel, the State Department said Tuesday, after top Biden administration officials warned a month ago that they would consider doing so if the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza did not improve.
State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said there would be no change to U.S. policy at the end of the 30-day deadline the U.S. set for Israel to improve conditions in Gaza. Aid groups and U.N. officials say Israel has largely failed to comply with U.S. demands, a Washington Post analysis found.

I mean, it's a highly visible strategic military position. I'm sure that American can technically give it up, but it's a huge cost.
US is global military hegemon, no matter how many civ games might make one think they have a cultural victory.
They got nukes and google uss liberty
Long history of outsourcing illegal shit aside
Who'd a thunk allowing a genocidal, theocratic ethnostate access to nuclear weapons would ever lead to issues?
Anyway enough about the US
Several theories:
- Epstein was mossad. There are a lot of tapes with a lot of people.
- Lots of Zionist billionaires: America is a plutocracy that acts on their behalf
- Some sort of "great game" calculus of keeping a client state for regional instability (Biden apparently believes this based on old speeches)
- Biden in particular has a melted brain. Many people have pointed out that Reagan was tougher on Israel than Biden has been. Reagan would set red lines and then say "you will comply."
I'm convinced the answer is "Israel absolutely has nukes and will use them if we stop providing them conventional arms"
But the real answer is probably as mundane as "They are the core of US power projection and intelligence gathering in the middle east, and we really don't want to lose that level of influence in the region".
core of US power projection and intelligence gathering
This is what Biden and probably other Washington ghouls think but if Israel is "projecting" American power then to what end? Meaning, what US interests are served? Cheaper oil? That's our relationship with SA which is potentially hurt by Israel's behavior (Israel, importantly, has no oil, we'd be better off normalizing with Iran). US bases? We don't have any bases in Israel, that would be Turkey, Bahrain, etc. Do you think Israel ever considers US interests before acting? If they did historically they definitely do not under Netanyahu.
With regards to intelligence, I am sure that when intelligence is shared it's done so to craft a narrative that Tel Aviv wants Washington to believe. Also mossad is the most pervasive, aggressive, and successful spy agency in Washington. The flow of information is heavily one-sided.
Biden, like many others in both the Democratic and Republican Party, are Christian Zionists. It's ideological above all else for them. But I bet the money doesn't hurt
For many, the belief that God still has a special relationship with Israel also includes an emphasis on eschatology, or the end times, and the belief that Israel’s establishment is part of a series of events that will lead to large-scale war, leading to the battle of Armageddon and the return of Jesus.

We already have Linux at home!
I have to work with Win11 for work and just noticed the lil Tux man in Microsofts Explorer. Likely to connect to WSL.
Apparently now Microsoft wants people to keep using Windows in a really interesting way. By simply integrating it within their own OS!
This way, people don't have to make the super hard and complicated switch to linux, but they get to be lazy, use the preinstalled container and say "See, I use Linux too!".
While this is generally a good thing for people wanting to do things with the OS, it is also a clear sign that they want to make it feel "unneccessary" to switch to Linux, because you already have it!
WSL alone was already a smart move, but this goes one step further. This is a clever push on their side, increasing the barrier to switch even more, since now there is less of a reason to. They are making it too comfortable too stay within Microsofts walls.
On a different note: Should the general GNU/Linux community do the same? Should we integrate easier access to running Winblows apps on GNU/Linux?
Currently I still find it too much of a hastle to correctly run Winblows applications, almost always relying on Lutris, Steams proton or Bottles to do the work for me.
I think it would be a game changer to have a double click of an EXE file result in immediate automatic wine configuration for easy and direct use of the software, even if it takes a big to setup.
I might just be some fedora using pleb, but I think having quick and easy access to wine would make many people feel much more comfortable with the switch.
Having a similar system to how Winblows does it, with one container for all your .exe programs would likely be a good start (instead of creating a new C drive and whatever for every program, which seems to be what Lutris and Bottles does).

Small addition:
Now that VR works essentially perfectly on GNU/Linux, even on Wayland with Gnome and an nvidia GPU, I have now stopped dualbooting for occasional VR Chat and Beat Saber (which are VR games).
In my opition, when looking away from online games with anticheat, Microsofts Office and adobes whatever software, there is no reason to use Winblows anymore.
The amount of configuration GNU/Linux gives me is truly empowering, running any scripts I want using shortcuts being a big one for me.

Super+W -> Firefox

Actually, Beat Saber was just an example, I mostly use VR for gamedev and Jet Island (cool VR game on Steam, maybe check it out).
Got a question though, it would be SUPER amazing to have some kind of open alternative to VR Chat. Like the Fediverse, but in realtime.
I know that this is probably harder to turn into a real thing, but IMAGINE!!!
VR Chat already has this feeling how it's all about people colaborating, and adding the power of self-hosting to the mix, alongside removing ads would be super duper amazing...
(I'll probably make a post about this on some VR community soon, this seems too interesting to keep local to this comment)
Hmm this looks very interesting. I like the immediate without NFTs and Bitcoin thingy.
It doesn't seem to support speech communication and VR though, which is kinda the whole point for me. Very promising though.
naw, have your tried Envision? Just a few months ago I thought the same as you, but ever since I tried Envision, I have not opened SteamVR at all.
Envision (a foss VR client) works GREAT for VR on linux. In fact, I also have an index, so I can tell you that yes, it works very well.
I stumbled across this project via the lvra website, which is an amazing forum site about using your VR devices on GNU/Linux. I highly, highly recommend going over there and having a look around. It features guides to many common questions and helped me a ton.
Envision is really just an interface for monado, which does all the complex VR stuff like tracking and screen distortion.
Envision let's you import the VR calibration from SteamVR right into Monados format. It uses a super small part of SteamVR in the background to perform the lighthouse tracking. But it's very lightweight, especially when compared to SteamVR and Oculus's VR interface.
Envision takes no time at all to boot up, it also lets you try out the "survive" lighthouse tracker, which is completely FOSS and doesn't rely on SteamVR at all besides the calibration data (the tracking quality is noticably worse though and the IPD seems to be off, but give it a try!)
There are two hurtles to get through tho:
1. Monado doesn't come with a "room boundary" system. You have to either move very little, or get yourself another solution for displaying your rooms bounds. Maybe try this one, haven't tested it yyet though.
2. Monado does not come with its own "steam vr dashboard". You have to bring your own. I recommend Wlx-Overlay-S as it works great for PC navigation and allows for very fast playspace-moving and resetting. It also allows for stuff like locking certain windows into your environment, so please give it a try, even if you stick with SteamVR. Envision allows for automatic launching of apps on startup, so I launch wlxoverlay.
If you have any questions about it, there is a Discord server for linux-specific-vr stuff over on the lvra website.
TLDR: If you didn't read any of this, just go to this page and have a look at Envision. There are all sorts of cool linux-specific VR things on there. Their discord helped me lots
Edit: You can also ask me if I want
I'm using an index. You can use Envision, as it supports wireless headsets and gives you a nice interface to set things up.
That is also what I use, as Envision also has support for cabled headsets.
In general, the lvra website is a great source for cool foss VR stuff on linux.
I'd argue that a lot of the other "additions" and "improvements" make any improvement in comfort irrelevant, as they are unbearable.
On a sidenote, you can set up a generic bottle in Bottles, and then set things up so that double clicking any miscellaneous .exe files just runs them in that bottle.
I don't know what you mean in your first argument. What exactly do you mean by "a lot of the other additions and improvements"? And what about them becomes unbearable?
I will have a look at the Bottles thing you brought up. Thank you for sharing that!
Extend, Embrace…
What next? Extinguish?
Heh, let them try.
I actually never heard of this saying, but I just looked up. Woah, that's really a phrase they use internally, hm? Crazy.
And it does accurately describe what they try to do here. It can't really work like that, since many people use GNU/Linux specifically because it's not owned by EvilCo™. But they could probably take over some part of the server-hosting business like this. And that is a scary thought.
Imagine, they could make it super easy to deploy things by incoperating premade docker containers into their UI thingy. That's - like - real bad.
Currently I still find it too much of a hastle to correctly run Winblows applications, almost always relying on Lutris, Steams proton or Bottles to do the work for me.
That's...uhhh... that's why they were made? So that your average Joe Schmoe, like myself and you, doesn't have to muddle through trying to get wine set exactly right so that the windows program functions. It sounds like you're complaining about the solution to the problem.
I guess there could be work done to just make it so if you double click on a .exe install file in just boots whatever has the best install preset, or give you a pop up with options for lutris/proton/bottles.
ok fair u got me there. Lutris really is a solution, but it still feels like some game-specific launcher you gotta run to run normal programs.
i was mostly complaining about the double click thing.
Could you maybe name some distros and DEs which have this feature pre-built?
I have used mint, Debian and Fedora and none of them seem to have this kind of feature.
Personally WSL has always been riddled with issues for me. I mainly used it for dev things before I switched to linux entirely. Recently I came back to Windows to try some of AMDs new graphics driver features and decided to try out WSL 2. Hell, Windows fucks up so much basic shit in there, i couldnt even run 'git init' because some permission issue with drive mounting. Had to move my entire project to a separate drive just to make it work. The way Windows handles the filsystem, permissions and "cross-OS" functionality is so weird and always results in some issue, making the Linux experience feel significantly more wonky than it needs to be. Performance is also a pain, since i had to love my project to a disk that was not part of WSL reading and writing files in VS Code becomes significantly slower.
I have a pretty high end rig and even my PC runs slow when using WSL, its great to have an option for linux in windows but when a docker container or even just a VirtualBox machine performs better than WSL i have no fucking clue why youd use it.
Thanks for listening to my rant. Take it with a grain of salt ig, maybe im just incompetent and doing something very wrong.
Should we integrate easier access to running Winblows apps on GNU/Linux?
Why "we" should bother with that when -you- can do it yourself? Linux is a "free" ""operating system"" (Not absolutely free, but at least way more "free" than Windows) -- learn the ways to do that and implement these changes yourself.
There is indeed .

That's why I just use a VM, I skip all the complications of having to fix bootloaders and broken installs. If anything goes wrong with windows I just delete the VM. Arch barely uses any RAM, so even back when I had only 8GB, windows ran incredibly well. I've updated to 16GB (because I needed the 64 bit version of excel and I wasn't being able to install it due to RAM requirements). Ever since then, I don't even look back to dual booting.
Funny story, originally my laptop was dual booted, but I removed windows completely and formated the partition, and since it was at the beggining of the drive, and you cannot move blocks around so easily in storage (I needed another SSD or hard drive to copy them momentarily) I was left with a hole in my storage. What I did was, mount the directory with the VM image storage to the empty partition. So now it's kind of "dual booting" with some extra steps and with the added benefit of being able to use both OS' at the same time
[TL;DR] If possible, just use a VM
This is the way.
Whenever I installed another operating system (newer Linux or long time ago when dual booting to Windows), I always unplugged the older drive physically. Then installed it and plugged it back. This way none of the OS changes anything on the others boot system. And I choose to boot the drive from UEFI boot menu.
No. There are cases which is an error of the operating system, not the operator. Windows in example did that recently (not my machine, I do not use Windows) by ruining grub. Saying it was a bug, but we believe its an attempt of Microsoft ruining grub with intention.
Just because you did not have any problems does not mean its the optimal and easiest way. Also having all operating systems and multiple Kernels and options to boot from for every OS in one boot menu is a mess. I don't want that ever again. Right now I have 5 entries for only one OS. Imagine adding Windows or another OS to it.
Its much easier and cleaner to separate each OS to its own menu, with the way I described earlier. Also much easier to replace an OS this way or make modifications.
This message doesn't say anything about the validity of your license, though. Or am I missing something?
I'm not up to date on Windows versions, but saying Win 11 has reached end of service is... unexpected?
