Wrapstodon - a new mastodon year end review is here

In December 2021 I set myself a goal: Add a year-in-review feature to #Mastodon before the next December. It's December 2024 and it's finally, slowly rolling out. It's not all that it was meant to be, because we couldn't prioritize it over all the other things we work on, but I didn't want to miss another year.

#Wrapstodon

It’s only in the nightly builds, so unless you’re on mastodon.social or a server with the latest build you won’t see it yet.

As for what exactly shows when it’s live, someone posted it was in their notifications.

The graph doesn't give enough context, nor does the article IMO. China is a third party in this, as well as the Ukraine War, etc. And Trump seems unlikely to be good for the economy in his time in office so next year might be up, but there are many more factors.

With Donald Trump preparing to cut taxes and increase tariffs, US inflation is forecast to stay above 2 per cent throughout the whole of 2025, according to predictions compiled by Consensus Economics. Eurozone inflation is on the other hand forecast to drop below the ECB’s target of 2 per cent as soon as February.

“We expect a divergence to open up between the loosening cycles of the Fed and the ECB as mounting inflation risks cause the former to take a fairly cautious approach, while the latter responds forcefully to economic weakness,” said Jennifer McKeown, chief global economist at Capital Economics.

This is a combination of Neocon colonial handlers promising to please Trump through every imaginable increase in warmongering submission to keep war ongoing, and deeply misplaced optimism that Trump's pro US oligarchy/monopoly profits will help economic growth instead of just the stock market.

Technically, high cost of living increases from tariffs and deportations can be "nominal economic growth". Insurance costs will keep skyrocketing from high replacement costs of homes and autos, and pessimism over global warming. If US massively increases government spending, the growth forecast is possible, but then so is collapse and debt default.

The growth forecasts will be accurate if colonial subjugation increases even more, but EU leaders during Trump45 had more backbone as a result of his disrespect. Everything is extremely uncertain, but there is more likely to be a US led global recession than anything else.

Well if they ain't paying their share of taxes, what else do you want them to spend money on? Another yacht? Hospitals? Schools? Why try to make the world a better place.
in reply to Notyou

They ARE trying to make the world a better place.

For themselves and their friends of course. Not us.

[Suggestion] Light/dark mode switch accessible when signed out & viewing other instances

When viewing different instances, whether to copy a community link to make another instance aware of it & subscribe to it or otherwise, it would be nice to have a switch along the top bar to switch between admin-set light/dark mode themes.

That way you aren't either forced into being blinded by light mode or having to let your eyes adjust to dark mode. Admins could choose the variant of light or dark theme to have the switch toggle between, so in the case of more customized instances they could retain their distinct style.

For reference, see almost any site with a light/dark toggle, but for a closer example, see Piefed's approach.

lemmy-ui's default is to use the browser light/dark-mode setting. So you are likely looking at servers that have a custom theme without light/dark modes, or some hacked-on css.

Thanks for the detailed reply! The potential complexity (depending on how much you want to do with it) is a major part of why I was asking, both in terms of use and administration.

Despite the challenges that poses and absence of mobile apps, it still sounds great, but definitely something to go in with an idea of what you do and don't want to do with it.

Low engagement and tends towards geeky grumpy right wing old men. Or Germans.

Agenda Prep for December 2024 WG Meeting

Agenda preparation for the December ForumWG meeting can be found at this public link (anyone can make comments for review.)

Monthly meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month, at 1700 to 1800 UTC. You can find them listed in the SocialCG Calendar. The next meeting will be held on 5 December 2024.

We will be continuing onwards with:

As always — time permitting — if you'd like to speak or inquire about a certain topic, comment in the agenda or reply here, the floor is open!

Can anyone help me understand why Hasan Piker is so popular in leftist political spaces despite his immense privilege?

This guy's dad is the former VP of a multibillion dollar Turkish conglomerate, as well as the secretary of a government department. Mom and Dad were able to fly to their other home in NJ to give birth so he'd get US citizenship. His uncle is the founder and owner of TYT Media and gave him his media career. He went to Rutgers. He lives in a multimillion dollar mansion in the Hollywood Hills. This is by definition not the kind of person who can be a voice of the People. Saying "I recognize my privilege" over and over, while living his lifestyle, doesn't negate his privilege and complete lack of real-life experience outside of the curated garden of the wealthy. He gets paid obscene amounts of cash to sit in his bedroom and word-vomit for 9 hours a day. Why are his unending opinions taken so seriously? He gives me strong controlled opposition vibes.

Also, class is not defined by wealth, but by relation to labor. He is doing the work he is getting paid for, regardless of whether someone thinks its too much. He's not exploiting others to make that money as far as I know.

It is unfathomable to me that this man wants to lead a country, but refuses to undergo even basic vetting.

I have a higher security clearance than Pollievre does, and I don't even work in any government related capacity.

Thanks for letting us know you have access. A friendly mercenary may be black-bagging you for a Cadillac ride shortly.
