Added: it looks like it uses Whisper for transcription. So the inference code is there but it's unclear about the other stuff.

The link takes you to their repos. The server repo has instructions on self-hosting directly on your server or with Docker. The app repo has code for both the iOS and Android apps. That’s good, because the iOS app at least doesn’t have a built-in way to select a different backend server.
Whisper is by OpenAI and as far as I know they have not shared the training code, much less the data sets, so the best you can do is fine-tune the models they’ve provided.
If use of Whisper is a problem, but the project is otherwise interesting to you, you could ask them to consider using a different STT solution (or allowing the user to choose between different options). I’m not aware of any fully open STT applications that are considered to be as capable as Whisper, but if you do, that would be great info to share with them.
I get the impression that recreating the Whisper training code is possibly doable, but the data is a bigger task.

Yes it's nice that the phone app is free but STT is the difficult and important part. With Moonshine it might be possible to run the transcriber completely on the phone instead of having the STT on a remote server.
It's interesting that they are able to do all that speaker distinguishing with just a single mic as found on both phones. There was a thread about phone features recently. Given this STT stuff, it could be useful to have a phone with 3 or 4 mics in the corners of the phone, like one of those tabletop conference mics, so it can figure out directionality of sound sources.

Today, a colleague couldn't do docker login for an internal registry. Constantly got an error which just said "unauthorized".
The password couldn't be the problem, because you actually generate a token on the registry webpage, so we tried all the different ways to spell his username (uppercase, lowercase, e-mail address) and tried different URLs for specifying the registry, tried toggling the VPN, a reboot etc., even though we knew what should work, because the login worked for me.
Eventually, we gave up and figured there must be some permission problem in the registry. Ten minutes later, he tells me that it works, without doing anything different. Now I'm wondering, if the IT saw our desperate login attempts and quickly fixed the problem. 🫠

Oh my, two mistakes in one sentence... HTS is not active in the south and Turkey supports the SNA (FSA) which is at times cooperating with HTS, but is at odds with them at the same time. The tentions just flared up today again and let to a lot of bloodshet between SNA and HTS in the last. Turkey did occasionally protect the HTS to a degree against Assads agressions (to prevent Assad from gaining ground), but also tried to get rid of them.
The US supports neither the SNA, nor HTS, but supports the YPG in the north and a mercenary troop in the south that acts like they were FSA, not HTS.
You know literally nothing about the conflict. Stop writing about it

You can't be serious. It has been common knowledge for almost a decade now that the US trained and funded all these "rebels". There is even those emails leaks where the US secretary of state says that "AQ is on our side in Syria". The US has spent billions funding all these terrorists.

Also, HTS separated many years from AQ. They have a similar ideology, but not an organizational connection for a long time now. And those weapons dodnt even go to al-nusra (of whom HTS sprung of).Al nusra was never fsa. And the US stopped supporting the FSA 10 years ago.

I've always suspected that many of these kinds of images were staged or propaganda.
Every so often you'll see a meme on Reddit with a bunch of American teenagers being athletic in the 60s. The meme suggests that people were healthy and fit back then, but I happen to know that the footage was for a physical fitness push at the time (gotta do more pushups than the commies) and the athletes were far from typical students.

The Washington Post had a bizarre article last week in which it questioned whether China was doing much to combat global warming. While the piece notedDean Baker (CounterPunch.org)
On a per capita basis it still emits about half as much as the United States.
This is still high, and China's per capita emissions have only gone up over time so far. It currently emits about as much per person as the EU does. This is too much, and both China and Europe need to reduce their emissions by a lot. Every year that they don't is more damage done.
Also, China’s emissions figures are misleading since it has an enormous surplus in trade of manufactured goods.
Consumption-based emissions paints a slightly better picture of China, but only slightly. It is still 90% of the EU's per capita emissions on this metric.
And just generally, what on Earth is that last full paragraph? "If China almost doubles the number of cars it sells, and it subsidises all of them by this number that appears to have been plucked from nowhere, and then it also subsidises batteries and solar panels by the same amount, well that makes a really big number that America isn't doing nearly as much as!"
The WP article is not some anti-China screed; it is openly discussing China's very real opportunity to lead the way for the world here. It brings up a lot of the progress that China has made and its enormous success in manufacturing the things needed for cleaner power. That it also brings up some of the challenges China faces in doing so hardly seems "bizarre" to me. Right now China is doing no better than Europe, and the fact that they're both better than America will help exactly none of us.

It not only supports IPFS, it is "built on top of" it, according to the website.
This makes me wonder if it's usable for regular web browsing or only IPFS sites. The latter would sort of make it a splinternet browser, and way less interesting.
I do love markdown files myself, so a browser-side parser is very interesting. Definitely skips some Jekyll/Hugo exports 🙂
Limiting that feature to IPFS is sort of one sided for my taste, though.

The internet is already decentralized. There are millions of websites hosted on thousands of separately-owned machines.
"Decentralized" services like the fediverse use thus exact same structure and bind them together by a search/aggregation API.
The "centralized" part of the internet is DNS/IP Assignments, Service providers, and search.
You are perfectly allowed to go your whole life without using search, or by self-hosting searX.
If we go back to the age of webrings, that is essentially decentralized internet. It seems like every decentralized internet idea is just a rehash of this with some Tor ideas sprinkled in.
You are never going to be able to pull a "Silicon Valley" and make every device into a mini server. The ping and uptime would be horrific.

staging rebuild cycles only happen every two weeks or so.
The reason is always that something changed and causes all dependent packages to change, requiring a rebuild of those too.
It looks like it's Debian's logo in the bottom left and that that's apt output.
EDIT Nope, that's pacman output, seems like they ssh'd into another arch-machine.
Sometimes I wish someone would make a an Arch box and come back to it years later to see the updates it has missed.
But that's assuming an Arch box would be reliable enough to stay alive that long lol.
Always heard of 20+ year old bsd and debian machines chugging along with no issue.
It won't rise much beyond that, since you only get one update per package. Whether it's upgrading Firefox from version 120 to 121 or to version 130, it doesn't change much in terms of download size, nor the number of updates.
At least, I assume, Arch doesn't do differential updates. On some of the slower-moving distributions, they only make you download the actual changes to the files within the packages. In that case, jumping to 121 vs. 130 would make more of a difference.
If you do want lots of package updates, you need lots of packages. The texlive-full package is always a fun one in that regard...
Got busy and didn't update my template for awhile. Machines would be instantiated a few minors back. 9.2 vs 9.4, for instance, but this was back in 7-land.
Updates would be about 600 packages, or most of the install.
Took 5 min, completely safe. Patch, bounce because we looked funny at dbus so it can't cope, and then good to go.
I used to tease my windows peer: he'd be still on "do not turn off your computer".

I used to care but with recovery tools being what they are and most apps being containers... my base systems tend to be a little more disposable.
That said, I haven't had problems, even if I am at risk for more of them. I have my snapshots and my backups.

Before my switch, i used Ubuntu exclusively for 13 years in row. I always heard of problems (and not at least because of the PPA repositories) when upgrading from one major version to the next, be it a LTS or not. I never did that and always installed fresh because of these stories. Mostly 4 years in between, or sometimes 2.
Its entirely possible that most problems happened because of packages from PPA that the user did not change for the new upgrade. Because PPA repositories were often designed for a specific version of Ubuntu. So its not entirely the fault of the apt package manager in that case.
I've tried so many times, and it basically always failed.
It was fine.
I don't really notice it anymore...
Keyboard shortcuts mean memorising. Some people have issues with memory. On-screen buttons mean no memorising.
That's the cool thing about Linux. You can customise it to your own needs and desires. Everybody is different.

Yeah, systemd hater or not, runit is quite fabulous Imo.
Some software with a hard requirement on systemd will not work, of course. I believe it is possible to run void using systemd, I've never tried though.
I really like runit, but once it's configured, like systemd, I mostly just don't see it anymore - you know what I mean...
Give it a shot, for me it's the packaging system, take a look at it and at the github "void-repository".
I really like how it's working, the simplicity of it, create your own package, your own repository, etc.
The killer features, for me, isn't really runit, but the stability of a rolling distro with the xbps package system.

Yes, I am amazed that quite a few people in this thread are saying they 'had to completely reinstall the os' and that it broke everything after not much time. As long as one doesn't rely on the AUR for system critical packages or much in generel, it is incredibly hard to break an Arch system (Manjaro and other Arch-based distros don't count). This is due in part to Arch being quite reproducible but it also having very good maintainership.
It doesn't hurt to apply new package configs by going through pacdiff once in a while though.

I switched from Windows to EndeavourOS a few months ago and haven’t had any issues on my personal computer, it’s amazing.
I also have EndeavourOS as a VM on my work laptop and I somehow managed to break systemd-boot when trying to do a system update though. The system update died halfway through and I defaulted to the classic solution of rebooting, which definitely made things worse because my boot partition in the VM broke. The great thing about Linux, and especially Arch, is the tools and knowledge readily available to fix things and everything was working again (with no data loss) in under 15 minutes. I’ve dealt with similar problems on Windows and either had to accept data loss or deal with significant headaches trying to resolve what should be a simple issue because the operating system refuses to provide basic information.
