I'll wait for a local model where the transcription happens on-device, like Google Recorder.

Today, a colleague couldn't do docker login for an internal registry. Constantly got an error which just said "unauthorized".
The password couldn't be the problem, because you actually generate a token on the registry webpage, so we tried all the different ways to spell his username (uppercase, lowercase, e-mail address) and tried different URLs for specifying the registry, tried toggling the VPN, a reboot etc., even though we knew what should work, because the login worked for me.

Eventually, we gave up and figured there must be some permission problem in the registry. Ten minutes later, he tells me that it works, without doing anything different. Now I'm wondering, if the IT saw our desperate login attempts and quickly fixed the problem. 🫠

Wow. This sounds great... Can someone from the field tell me if it is?
in reply to ElPussyKangaroo

It's 'great' along the same lines as if the US gov announced paying all citizens insurance premiums for 3 years. Sure, more would temporarily have access to a service they should already permanently have access to, but in reality it shines a spotlight on how serious the problem is.

India paid $55k per journal for 3 years access... to knowledge. Knowledge that the journals did nothing to accrue themselves. If you can make that make sense then sure it is a good thing in that it is better than not having access at all or for a more egregious cost.

in reply to Cephalotrocity

Now that you mention it, this I'd actually, truly, insane. $55k?! Per journal? Goddamn that's a lot of money. And I would assume little to no money would reach the actual researchers who spent months and years working in this.

Researchers often pay to get reviewed/published. Typically due to the Journal being open access, but often for things like 'expedited review'.

Regardless, they don't get paid for the article, relying on donations or grants to fund the research (with publication costs included in the proposal).

Wow. I can't even begin to imagine how broken the system has to be when the people on whose shoulders we stand, work on donations and grants.

The same Washington Post that is a mouth piece for American oligarch Jeff Bezos? I can't imagine why they would have an anti-China slant.

Help to troubleshoot...Freeze before desktop

Hi guys! I have KDE Neon 6.2.3 running on my Surface Pro 7+, and up until now it's been running rather smoothly, for years. But today I seem to be unable to fully boot anymore on normal mode.
Linux will get stuck on the KDE spinning gear, with the gear frozen. And it becomes unresponsive, to open alternative consoles with control+alt+Fx, or even control+alt+del. The only thing that works is a force shutdown by holding the power button.

I tried with a previous kernel, with the same results (current is linux-image-6.10.10-surface-1, I have a generic 6.8.0-49, but it also freezes). I can boot in safe mode. It opens a different login screen, and after a failed attempt of opening lxde, it fails back to my usual KDE session, in safe graphics mode.

What can I test? How can I see what failed at boot?

Highly unlikely, I assume you are nervous after the xz backdoor, but that is almost one of a kind. I couldn't find any other examples of something like that happening.
