I haven't seen nearly as many right-wing people praising/encouraging obvious murder at I have here and on Bluesky. If something horrible happened to Nancy Pelosi, you sure wouldn't see me posing with a model of her decapitated head - unlike a certain comedian.

Even granting what you say, is putting out veiled death threats under one's real name really the kind of thing leftist figures should be doing in the wake of an election where Trump was nearly killed twice and the US decided that the left is too extreme for them?

Er. No. That's not what happened. When you look at vote totals from 2020, you can see that Biden got 81M votes to Trump's 74M. Looking at vote totals from 2024, Harris got 74M votes--the same as Trump in 2020--and Trump eked out a slightly improved performance at 77m. This isn't a 'mandate'; this is fewer people showing up to the polls. If the same number of people had voted in 2024 as voted in 2020, it's probable that Trump would have lost again. That isn't people saying the left is "too extreme", that's apathy.

I skimmed the first few pages. And it seems it's just concerned with the content? You can store your notes (posts, file uploads, ...) on arbitrary instances and move them around. But you still need a fixed instance that hosts your actor identity (your account) which then tells where to go to fetch a post. And that one can't change. So your account and username would still be tied to a fixed domain handle. And you can't move it. And even for the content, it seems like you'd need that fixed instance to do the 302 forward, so it needs to be contacted to resolve each location.

Edit: But you might be right. I don't grasp the full concept. Maybe it enables us to configure a webserver on our own domain to forward a user handle to some external server. Meaning we don't have to install a server ourselves. And the servers would then be interchangable (if this translates to fetching everything). You'd still be tied to your domain name. But not to a service anymore. That'd be great.

yeah no i seriously don't see how that one actually helps anything. maybe for the odd self hoster it could make sense but realistically it's way too under-defined (but then that's the norm for ap, sadly)

let's say lemmy implemented it. ok. what now? my current account is still under lemmy.blahaj.zone. i still can't move to some other instance without changing my account's id and breaking all the existing object ids. i can move my posts between instances (or perhaps connect multiple instance software to the same actor, though a generic C2S server can in theory accomplish something of that sort without needing to alter other instances communicating with mine) but my identity is not any more portable than without it.

actor relative ids requires everyone to anticipate being portable and set their account up with it from the very start. maybe the existing account migrations can be used to one-time migrate a non-portable account to a portable one, but you're still required to host your own account on your own "identity instance" yourself, and you are more or less stuck on that identity instance if it ever goes down without you sending the same account move activity we already have out. it's not as simple as taking an account from one instance and moving it to another.

codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src… is imo better at accomplishing the goal, and unlike relative URLs it has real existing implementations proving it's viable in the first place. but it has it's own downsides as well (severly limiting domain block effectiveness for authorized fetch enabled instances, no key rotation afaict, ...)

as a side note, don't get too hyped up by feps. they have no power over anything and an existence of one does not mean anything for the future of the protocol. implementations are still the only ones making the final call on how the protocol actually functions (because real governance and "spec compliance" is anywhere between doesn't exist and being actively hijacked by threads via swf), and the only implementation that actually matters in terms of protocol improvements is mastodon.

If you want waydroid to see files on the host, you need to muck around with bind-mounting a directory, or just using abd to move files manually.

I think waydroid can't see anything beyond itself normally. I had a hell of a time trying to get files on there, so if there's an easy way to get Waydroid to see files on the host, I couldn't find it.

Back when I was a wee bit Java noob, I was trying to write a RuneScape bot to play Soul Wars. I had a basic recursive pathfinding algo for figuring out how to walk around the map, but it blew out of memory very quickly (each tile has 4 options, do that recursively, etc). So I added caching. Anyways, I never cleared the caching. So after 20 minutes of running the script, you had like 2GB of allocated RAM calculating the best path from any 2 tiles in the minigame.

Great times. No amount of language safety features would have saved me from that stupidity.

You don't need unsafe. Just keep pushing to a vec and never remove anything. Memory leaks are more than lost memory allocations. You can even have them with rc/arc cycles

You can have a memory leak when items are still in scope in some loop or when you have a reference count cycle. The latter happens with the Rc/Arc types in rust.

An example for the former can be a web server that keeps track of every request it's ever received in memory. You will eventually run out of memory. But you did not violate any memory rules (dangling pointer, etc.). Memory leaks can be caused by design issues.

That's one kind, and Rust's "ownership" concept does mean there's built-in compile time checks to prevent dangling pointers or unreachable memory. But there's also just never de-allocating stuff you allocated even though it's still reachable. Like you could just make a loop that allocates memory and never stops and that's a memory leak, or more generally a "resource leak", if you prefer.

Rust is really good at keeping you from having a reference to something that you think is valid but it turns out it got mutated way down in some class hierarchy and now it's dead, so you have a null pointer or you double free, or whatever. But it can't stop the case where your code is technically valid but the resource leak is caused by bad "logic" in your design, if that makes sense.

So... there will be Alphas 5 and 6. And we got Alpha 4 a week late, compared to the old release schedule of the last Thursday of every month. And a lot of the things that were meant for Alphas 3 and 4 were pushed back. I hope that System76 doesn't encounter more features that push things back further (the way VRR seems to have done), for their own sake. That way, they can keep up a lot of hype around the Betas and the release of Epoch 1.

That is normal in software development. System76 thinks that they will reach v1.0 early next year, but in reality, this won't mature for another 2 years or so.

At their self-imposed rates of 1 new Alpha at the last Thursday of every month, and assuming only 2 Betas, and assuming they can get Alpha 5 done in December, we're looking at the end of April for release, though I'd realistically expect Epoch 1 at the end of June or July, or maybe even after that.

This is normal in Software Development.

I know. I'm a CS student, but they are still in a pretty early stage of their project and don't have anywhere near the technical debt or size of projects like Plasma or GNOME, and as such, I think they should still be able to keep on going at a pretty fast pace.

Contemplating Fedora Kinoite for work daily driver. Need to prove that I can virtualize an existing physical Windows 11 machine. Using Bazzite on a personal laptop as a host test bed.
Test host seems to be set up correctly. I layered the packages in the virtualization group, layered virtio-win (from downloaded rpm package), added my user to the libvert group, and enabled libvirtd. After a reboot or two, I can connect with the Virtual Machine Manager and define my VM.
On physical machine I used Disk2vhd to generate a vhdx. Moved that file to the test host and converted to qcow2. Copied disk image to /var/lib/libvert/images and added it as my drive image when I defined the VM.
VM starts but will not boot. Stupid question: Should I have install

I don't get this comment. Again, the virtio-win is an ISO that's easily mounted on a qemu (whether libvirt environment or not, which is not required, it just helps making the qemu configuration easier), which comes with several virtualized drivers that accelerate the windows experience quite a bit.

Changing the storage driver is complex on plain qemu (I don't think it's easier through libvirt just because the heck of it, the issue is the windows guest), first one need to run qemu with a dummy storage driver using virtualized driver, so that windows detects it. On the guest one needs to install the driver for the discovered storage from the ISO, then reboot and the dummy disk can go away and windows will find a driver for the main disk). Other drivers like the ethernet one, graphics cards, memory baloon, and other stuff need to change the corresponding driver manually, but no need for immediate reboots, but for sure several reboots are expecting while changing the windows drivers.

Some investigation on your side is required if wanting to use spice (to add copy/paste cabalities on the guest, but perhaps that's not needed anymore with libvirt and some of the popular forntends from GTK/QT), and the QLX dirver needs to be chosen correctly since it depends on the windows version (there was one for windows 10, not sure if there's a 11 one).

Again, all this just to improve the windows guest experience. Some of this might have been made easier through libvirt, but the windows side of the drivers is a manual windows process, one driver at a time, and using virtualized storage is tricky on windows guests...

BTW I was setting a tap interface, with IP tables, because I found it to be the easier way to share my host VPN connection with the guest, without the need to establish a host and a guest VPN connection...

I use qemu to virtualize a Windows machine. I run KDE with Virt Manager, so i created a new VM, selected Windows 11 and everything else worked normally.

virtio-win allow for much better performance using virtualized drivers rather than plain emulation from qemu. Virt Manager doesn't offer windows guest paravirtualized drivers, that's on the guest side, and virtio-win ISO helps a lot with this.

Forgot to include the boot/system volume. It's a lovely time waster when you're dealing with disk images that are hundreds of gigabytes in size that have to be copied over the network. 😆

I'll add Disk2hvd screenshots when I get a sec.

Situation gets slightly more complicated if you had multiple drives in your system when you installed Windows, of course. Installer might put system volume on a different drive, so you'd have to image more than one drive to get a working system. Might get a little confusing as to which volumes should go in which image. There's a tool called GWMI that might help with that since afaik the volume guids don't show up in the Windows Disk Management snap-in.

Edit: The promised screenshot. In my case, I knew the volume labelled SYSTEM resided on the same disk as my C: drive. Probably don't have to include the recovery partition, strictly speaking, but I did.

DeepMind AI weather forecaster beats world-class system (this time with Bayesian statistics)

Google DeepMind has developed the first artificial intelligence (AI) model of its kind to predict the weather more accurately than the best system currently in use... The system, called GenCast, is described today in Nature.
Conventional forecasts, including those from ENS, are based on mathematical models that simulate the laws of physics governing Earth’s atmosphere... GenCast, by contrast, has been trained only on historical weather data...

So yeah DeepMind is fucking going at it again.

Interestingly the model architecture seems to heavily integrate Bayesian maximum likelihood estimation in addition to their usual GNN-based deep learning approaches, which I didn't know is even possible. Their methods section states "[o]ur innovation in this work is an MLWP-based Forecast model, and we adopt a traditional NWP-based State inference approach

I'm not super familiar with Bayesian methods though so if anyone can add some more information I'd appreciate it

It's hard to make a good weather forecast tool without theoretical elements incorporated in it.

I'm sure the model produces higher accuracy results on historical data. I read the abstract and it's not mentioned if they tested it on new data.

With ml, the most difficult part of the work is making sure not to overfit historical data. Is target have a less accurate model (on the training data) than a model that can be justified using theoretical reasoning. This way, I can be much more confident that it will work in the long run.

Let's see where this will go in the coming years!

Cant shutdown the system!(Fedora crashed)

I have been facing this issue since yesterday, but basically at some point the system becomes insanely slow, and the restart and shutdown options disappear from the menu, tty3-7 dont work, it freezes at the shutdown -now command(at which point I just manually cut the power(bad Idea I know)),

but today I stuck around as my system got insanely borked, eventually freezing up and giving me the screen above. the problem shows up after I wake it up from suspend but not always:

Can you enable SSH, and then try SSH into the box once it hangs?

Any OOMKiller messages in dmesg/journalctl? Do you have swap space?

Nothing in the logs jumped out at me, hopefully someone else can help you.

No i dont have another system that I can ssh with right now,
There are some OOM messages before the timestamps in my first paste, I have edited the post to include more journalctl entries, yes I have a swapfile.

If you're on Android then you can use Termux (via F-droid) to get ssh capabilities. I think there is also a different iOS app, but I'm no expert on that OS, so I can't tell you its name. If you have a smart phone then you might have a ssh capable system after all

There are android clients, probably one for iOS as well. If you are getting OOM killed, you need to work out what is using all your memory. The OOM killer is pretty indiscriminate, and will murder processes randomly.

Maybe keep system monitor up and keep an eye on memory usage?

Try changing the Display Manager from GDM to something like LightDM. There are some issues with GDM on some systems.

Old isn't necessarily bad. Also, as far as I can tell, distros are still patching 1.32. Based on my personal usage of LightDM and the fact that the project is still developed (based on commits to main), I'd say it's more of an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" dynamic. As for security, the active development suggests the developers would respond if there was a vulnerability - a big if, considering its last CVE was in 2017.

Personally, I love LightDM - it has just enough features while mostly sticking to its name (I mean, you're probably using GTK anyway).

What about dmesg? if it's a hardware problem (and it looks like, but I may wrong) dmesg will print some usefull data

sudo dmesg -Tw

-T form human redeable timestamp and -w to follow (like tail -f)

Also, about that hard reset that you did, Linux magic keys are your friends if your are not facing a kernel panic, I have this key combo engraved in my head like a rune:

Press and hold Alt + PrtSc (not Alt+Gr) and then press only one time each (and while holding Alt + PrtSc) E + I + S + U + B

PrtSc maybe be SysRq in your keyboard depends on the manufacturer, architecture or how old it is. Also wait one or two seconds between keys when pressing EISUB.

Looks like SysRq keys are not enable in your distro by default, don't know the reason but Fedora kernel devs would known better than me.

Just for curious, did you installed some gnome extension recently? try this

The KMS timeouts almost make me wonder if the graphics chip is snorting some sort of crack.

Just to be safe, maybe try booting a live USB and see what happens. To be very sure, you could even try multiple distro/DE combos on the live disk.

If it's RAM, it should be easily replaceable on a laptop of that age. If it's the graphics chip, then it's probably time to find some other laptop. You can probably still press this to service in a homelab, though.
