It was just Eithan Arelius veiled again.

(I hope that at least one person gets this reference. It's too good to go to waste.)

in reply to Zippythezigzag

I've never seen or heard that variant of that name. In my head it sounds like it's pronounced like someone with a heavy southern drawl saying the name "Ethan".
in reply to go $fsck yourself

I'll try to put the name in the way it's pronounced. Hopefully this works..

A-th-an Uh-rail-lee-us

It's from the Cradle book series by Will Wight.

in reply to distantsounds

I understand the word play and see the effort making the corresponding image, but the glorification of this person is not acceptable for me. There's a line between malicious joy and glorification or open call for violence. Even in meme format. Maybe I'm the party pooper here, but I can't grasp the collective hate the last days.
in reply to chloroken

Expected average lemmy.ml answer. Just remain in your bubble.
in reply to hakunawazo

This bubble seems pretty large and all inclusive from where I'm sitting. You and those defending this vile system are on the outs.
in reply to hakunawazo

Lemmy.ml is more broadly federated than Lemmy.world, what are you talking about?
in reply to hakunawazo

Maybe you'd understand better, if you or someone you love had to suffer from arbitrarily denied UHC insurance claims.
For some this action seems to be a drastic move to hold someone accountable for the pain he caused, who couldn't be held accountable though other means.
in reply to hakunawazo

Exactly. I, an everyday normal person just like you, think that murdering CEOs is bad. I am definitely not saying that because I am a CEO of a health insurance company. It is important that health insurance CEOs be spared, and not at all for personal reasons! We- i mean they deserve to live. This is an opinion that all normal everyday people - of which I certainly am one myself - should share.
in reply to hakunawazo

people don't like a boot on their head. in a broken system violence often is the answer. the outpouring of support you're seeing for our new folk hero is the collective masses cheering one less fucking boot on their head.

They need to sit around conference room tables all day jerking each other off and then ordering lunch on the company card.

And by all day I mean until 2pm when they leave early for their tennis match or whatever the fuck they do.

in reply to Karna

Is it up to the level of quality and features of KDE yet?
in reply to ReCursing

I consider KDE to be the lower quality option so that's subjective.
in reply to ReCursing

People like you confuse me. Do you want gnome to be the same as KDE? If so why? KDE already exists. Whats the point of having multiple DEs if they arent different?
in reply to IHave69XiBucks

I don't actually care about gnome, so much as about gnome being the default for most distros when kde is just better at everything a de and a unix-like system should do. Gnome is just... restrictive. Do it their way or you can;t do much of anything. And most annoyingly, the file dialogues are shite!
in reply to ReCursing

The default? Most distros you select what DE you want when you get your image or during install. How is it the default? Do u just mean Ubuntu?
in reply to IHave69XiBucks

I mean exactly what I say. Yes you can select other images but they're remixes or spins or alternative versions, the "main" version is usually gnome. And you know it!
in reply to ReCursing

Idk ive only used like MInt, Manjaro, Arch, and Debian personally. Mint doesnt support gnome, Majaro has options for gnome or KDE, Arch u just do it yourself how you want, and Debian you pick whatever one you want during install. Not sure what it matters anyway if you still have the option to use whatever you want tho. I mean Mint didnt support gnome, and i just installed it manually anyway and it worked fine.
in reply to Karna

Fun fact, roughly half of gnome-shell codebase is written in JavaScript.
in reply to lustyargonian

I know that extensions are mostly written in js, but why codebase? Any legacy reason I wonder?
in reply to antrosapien

From what I can gather

  1. JS is system agnostic, doesn't require compilation or multiple dependency binaries, as opposed to say Python.
  2. JS is widely understood, could get more contributors.
  3. JS is a good enough scripting language made with UI stuff in mind.

I also see people lamenting that lua wasn't chosen, so there's that.

İf it works good enough for my laptop phone and pc then it's good enough for everyone else

Besides, it wouldn't have made much of a massive difference if it was lua or js, but even lua has it's issues leading to people preferring other versions of lua

in reply to lustyargonian

JS is system agnostic, doesn’t require compilation or multiple dependency binaries, as opposed to say Python.

Can you expand on that? How does JS have less requirements than Python?

in reply to ℍ𝕂-𝟞𝟝

While it's true that both python and js are interpreted languages, making them highly portable, JS at that time was a very lightweight language with a robust runtime offered by mozjs, that was built to be easy to embed into other systems, while python was designed for being the framework in which you build apps directly, hence requiring deeper dependencies.

Oh that's why cinnamon (fork of Gnome 3) uses a ton of JavaScript.

in reply to passiveaggressivesonar

I'm pretty sure there are no more complaints because those developers were fired. Problem solved. \s

What do you think about having a custom URI scheme for the fediverse?

Since we are in the fediverse, I think it would be convenient to have a fediverse-wide resolvable fediverse URI scheme, that would look like so:

fediverse://

edit: Found a relevant FEP: codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src…

in reply to asudox

The disadvantage is, Reddit and other platforms will never add support for [fediverse hyperlink](fediverse://example.com/post/1337) Markdown syntax, or even start blocking it (they can already block known Fediverse domains but there would be backlash if they did).

What we know about the [historical WW2] gun used in UnitedHealth CEO assassination

There was a plan in 1943 to drop Welrods into German-occupied territories for the mass assassination of Schutzstaffel (SS) and Gestapo officers and soldiers within a one-month period by resistance units. This plan was possibly delayed or called off in the aftermath of Operation Anthropoid, the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich by Czech resistance forces.[1] In the wake of his assassination, an estimated 13,000 civilians were arrested and interrogated, 5,000 civilians murdered in German reprisal killings and the villages of Lidice and Ležáky destroyed.

in reply to fossilesque

So he's using a veterinarian pistol seemingly with little familiarity so that narrows it down to like 324 million people
in reply to fossilesque

Commentary from someone quite trusted in the historical gun community and who's actually shot multiple Welrods/VP9s:

It's not a VP9. Even at the very start of the video, on the first shot before the shooter even manually cycles the gun, gas is ejected backwards out of the action rather than forward out of the suppressor.

Severance — Season 2 Official Trailer | Apple TV+

ACTUALLY DITCHING my apple account was the hardest thing ever -- because they made it ridiculous. I don't have an iphone, imac, ipad or ibook. The process of leaving appleTV was so unbelievably onerous that I'm never coming back.

I hope Severance can come to a regular network some day.

in reply to corsicanguppy

They made a Blu-Ray for this and some of their bigger shows. If you're willing to wait you'll probably be able to watch this season without subscribing to Apple TV+.

The private health industry needs to die, and all executives with it. I can't tell if those words are worse than straight up hate speech with the nonchalant way it is worded. He doesnt even consider the lives of those children as real at all. That denying those claims is denying life. This is the prevailing attitude at huge conglomerates and I've had my fill. They deserve what they dish out, death.
