Can someone share the origin of this meme? (The hooded smiling man) I can't find anything on Know Your Meme and it's everywhere.

Look up Guy Fawkes. I don't remember all the details but I think he was some French guy who got executed for something.

Unless you're talking about that specific person wearing that outfit in which case he's from the movie V for Vendetta with Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving.

Edit: I don't know how to read.

I knew I got the details wrong. Thanks for the correction!

Even though I completely misunderstood what that person was asking about lmao

That's the dude who shot the United Healthcare CEO
in reply to klemptor

Thanks, but weird that we are making memes about a criminal.
in reply to RiQuY

Shooting someone responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people is a crime, yes. but can it be morally justifiable?

To be clear i am not saying people should start shooting billionaires en masse (per the feddit.uk rules prohibiting the incitement/promotion of violence). i'm just saying i would shed no tear, and make no effort to stop them

in reply to RiQuY

Yes - it’s true the healthcare CEO had more blood on his hands than the shooter, but that’s no reason to refer to the CEO as a criminal!

He was just a greedy, unethical monster who lived off the largess of others’ suffering.

in reply to Serialchemist

To the extent that he wasn't a criminal it's only because our government is too corrupt to make his actions illegal.
in reply to Serialchemist

Killing the CEO will change nothing, the solution is to add regulations to healthcare companies, including jail penalties if necessary.

Some companies have already backed away from some of their more predatory stuff... so it did have an effect.
in reply to RiQuY

I love the double morale of some people with the meme templates.

Lots of people encouraging others to stop using the guy at the "change my mind" meme because that person is bad but it's ok to use a literal criminal (the one that killed the CEO of a company)?

I didn't know that killing was considered a good action depending if the one dead is rich or not. /s

in reply to RiQuY

Oh won't somebody think of the hyper rich oligarchs exploiting sick and dying people for profit?!?!?!

Buddy, bootlicking the billionaires won't make them reconsider denying your insurance claim.

in reply to RiQuY

The man he killed was a thousand times more criminal than the shooter.

The shooter may be a criminal, but he significantly reduced the total criminality of this world.

in reply to RiQuY

It's not. It's weird that you're defending a billionaire, bootlicker.

Trump says will consider leaving NATO if allies didn't 'pay bills’

US President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his campaign promises to impose trade tariffs and carry out mass deportations on Sunday, while also hinting at the possibility of withdrawing from NATO.

In his first major televised interview, six weeks before taking office, Trump said he would "absolutely" consider leaving NATO if allies didn't "pay their bills."

"They have to pay their bills," Trump told NBC's "Meet the Press," saying he would "absolutely" consider taking the United States out of the alliance unless members are "treating us fairly."

He also suggested that US backing for Ukraine would be reduced, stating he would "probably" limit funds to Kiev, which the United States has been steadfastly backing since the war in Ukraine broke out.

"Possibly. Yeah, probably, sure," he told the US news outlet.

Nice way to get rid of trolls who make personal attacks without contributing anything.

Don't worry they can press both. Spend money on security and make up for that by stealing from proles.

The United States launched a wave of airstrikes against ISIS in Syria

The strikes against the ISIS leaders, operatives, and camps were conducted as part of the ongoing mission to disrupt, degrade, and defeat ISIS, in order to prevent the terrorist group from conducting external operations and to ensure that ISIS does not seek to take advantage of the current situation to reconstitute in central Syria.

The operation struck over 75 targets using multiple U.S. Air Force assets, including B-52s, F-15s, and A-10s. Battle damage assessments are underway, and there are no indications of civilian casualties.

Sidekick - A new mastodon web client, in which the user can post through a variety of bots! (still in early alpha-phase ...)

Currently, there are six bots available:
- Larry: Classic text posting: just post text
- Spark: turns all text into uppercase
- Ennui: produces low-effort posts (removes punctuation, makes it lowercase, introduces typos)
- Jea: schedule posts by starting post with a hashtag and the number of minutes to postpone
- Hamlet: adds a random Shakespear quote to the post
- Legion: send out multiple posts by starting the message with a hastag with the number of repeats

You can select three of them and have them then available next to the post-button as a quick-select.

Yeah, this is kind of everything that most fedi communities I know about do not want.

Cool that you built a thing and all and maybe there is a use for it but I'm gonna have to respectfully downvote.

Syria's Sayyida Zeinab Shia shrine left unharmed, Iraqi fighters say

A promising development for the Shia in the region. I remember this was a big reason Hezbolllah stepped into Syria in 2012 given the importance of the shrine.

apkupdater not working properly

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/22214348

Some weeks back apkupdater stopped being able to download/upgrade/install from apkpure, but now a days I see issues with apkmirror as well (I see way less apps when searching for them). There was an initial issue about not being able to install from apkpure, but it seems more than that.

Agreed there's aurora store, but to be honest, I pretty much prefer avoiding the Google Play store at all, and I haven't found an issue with apkpure.

There was apkgrabber, but it was not working since so long, and finally it got archived on github.

Is there some FLOSS app similar to apkupdater, other than aurora store?

Anyone experiencing issues with it? Issues are not meant to be status reports once filed, but it seems not many have even noticed about the referred issue.

Obtainium lets you update directly from github. It rules.

yes, but it's mostly for open source apks, the beauty of apkupdater is that it allows installing/upgrading some apks from apkpure and other sources (it was true for apkmirror directing to the right place to download and install from the browser, but on apkmirror most apks now days don't install/upgrade unless you install their own apkmirror app), avoiding google play and avoiding aurora store (which besides the issues with anonymous connections, it gets upgrades pretty late for some reason). That's something I don't see an alternative for. Yes, upkupdater also allowed to install/upgrade from github/gitlab/... but its major purpose to me, was to be able to install/upgrade some non open source stuff without the need to connect to google play, and using recognized and reputable mirrors like apkpure and when it was feasible apkmirror. For FLOSS I use f-droid (official repo, plus non official like "izzyondroid" and others). Unfortunately there are a few apps I'm forced to use, which are not open source...

UN Abandons Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide Contract After Saying Israel Is Not Committing Genocide.

The publication referenced Wairimu’s initial post on when to refer to a situation as genocide, from which the United Nations based its argument. In the controversial article by the special advisor, she states that the clarification was important since the term is mostly misused.

Nderitu noted that genocide encompasses a Holocaust such as the one perpetrated by the Hutus against the Tutsis in Rwanda, the attack on Bosnian Muslims by the Serbians, and the deaths witnessed in Sudan.

However, regarding the killings perpetrated by Israel, Wairimu noted that the consistent pattern of violence committed by the Israeli soldiers cannot be classified as genocide.

in reply to geneva_convenience

Remember, it's only a Genocide if it came from the Genocide region of RwandaBosniaSudan.

Otherwise, it's a sparkling ethnic cleansing.

'Israel' announces control of Syrian Mount Hermon

Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the 'Israeli' military has taken control of Mount Sheikh in Syria in recent hours without facing resistance.

Additionally, 'Israeli' Army Radio mentioned that the Cabinet has decided to occupy the Mount Sheikh area and establish a buffer zone. The military will be the enforcing force in this buffer zone along the Syrian border.

in reply to geneva_convenience

I don't care what your opinions of Hamas or any of the other similar Islamic militant groups are, whether you consider them terrorists or not, you HAVE to admit that Israel is an objectively worst terrorist org than all of them combined.

Israel is an abomination but this is just text book play here... They never returning these territories.

Easy fucking W.

One day will fuck around enough though to find out but that's when US support weakens on a generation or so.

For now they will expand their territory north as their borders with Jordan and Egypt are secure.

I am interested what the new regime in Syria gonna about this. I doubt they got ability to take anything back now.

in reply to HiddenLayer555

Israel and US are the only terror organizations in middle east, all the smaller groups are just their proxies.
