It's a shame what happened. I was rooting for this company and was hoping that running stuff like Ludwig's events and the Streamer Awards would boost their profile.

Aww hexbear ❤️🖤

I just installed this game from postmaster on my r36s handheld retro console, and I'm having a blast with this game!
in reply to nieceandtows

It’s great on portmaster! I’ve mostly played it on my rg35sp :)

A fan without moving parts that leverages ionization to create air flow

in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

They used to have this thing called the Ionic Breeze from the 'as seen on TV' brand Sharper Image. Pretty sure they went bankrupt, something about shoddy products and creating excessive indoor ozone as I recall.
in reply to ShellMonkey

Yeah I looked into those a little while back to see if there was an air filter product that didn't constantly need fiber filter replacement. Turns out that ionizing air creates ionized air (ozone), which is bad to breathe.
in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

I don’t see the need particularly but my guess at the “big company” mentioned is Apple. They seem like the type to jump at the opportunity to use a new technology to make quieter and thinner laptops. They already make some laptops without any cooling fans despite how inadvisable that sounds.
in reply to WolfLink

I see no downsides to this tech compared to regular fans. These are quieter, smaller, and they're unlikely to break.

The video also highlights the disadvantages compared to traditional fans:

  • slightly less energy efficient
  • weaker
  • concerns about ozone
  • concerns about attracting dust
in reply to WolfLink

Those are not disadvantages to apple, if anything, it makes the planned obsolescence an easy task. Gimme dat dust!
in reply to WolfLink

The video says ozone is addressed by a using a copper catalyst. It is slightly weaker and energy efficient, but as the video points out, it just means designing around it. The dust might be an issue, but given it's blowing air out, I'd expect that kind of solves the problem.

This Week in KDE Plasma: Better fractional scaling

This week's headliner change is something that I think will make a lot of people happy: better fractional scaling! Vlad and Xaver have been hard at work to snap everything to the screen's pixel grid, with the effect that using a fractional scale factor now results in a lot less blurriness as well as no more gaps between windows and their shadows. You'll see it in the screenshot below (which was taken at 175% scale) but the effects are subtly better everywhere. Really great stuff! And lots more too, of course.

A hidden experimental flag isn't "fixed." It might be the start, but until it's stable and usable through the normal UI, it's not really done.
in reply to Jure Repinc

What causes spurious random lines between rows of characters in Konsole or other terminal emulators? The lines go away if one simply moves the window, but as soon as one begins sending characters to the tty they randomly come back 2-5 lines on the screen in random locations. Debian 12, 2 screens, One at 100%, the other at 75% (I think - I don't seem to be able to open display settings right now)

That's one thing I really like about lemmy.ml compared to some other instances, it's always kept up to date. I'd host my own for myself but then it's just another thing I'm responsible for and I'd rather not.
in reply to ipkpjersi

The point of this post was to show that other large instances like lemmy.zip and dbzer0 updated the day of the release

Fascist granting citizenship to fascist, not really a surprise.

Japanese researchers test pioneering drug to regrow teeth

Unlike reptiles and fish, which usually replace their fangs on a regular basis, it is widely accepted that humans and most other mammals only grow two sets of teeth.

But hidden underneath our gums are the dormant buds of a third generation, according to Katsu Takahashi, head of oral surgery at the Medical Research Institute Kitano Hospital in Osaka.

[…]

Tests on mice and ferrets suggest that blocking a protein called USAG-1 can awaken the third set, and the researchers have published lab photographs of regrown animal teeth.

In a study published last year, the team said their "antibody treatment in mice is effective for tooth regeneration and can be a breakthrough in treating tooth anomalies in humans".

Still, there is the rest of the world to be considered where health insurance actually deals with pharmaceutical companies and makes them sell their products with realistic prices.
in reply to The Pantser

Except that you can't really compare dentures and teeth. Not having teeth brings along a bunch of side effects like loss of bone structure in the jaw that wouldn't happen with teeth.

Incus 6.8 has been released

Incus is a next-generation system container, application container, and virtual machine manager.

It provides a user experience similar to that of a public cloud. With it, you can easily mix and match both containers and virtual machines, sharing the same underlying storage and network.

Incus is image based and provides images for a wide number of Linux distributions. It provides flexibility and scalability for various use cases, with support for different storage backends and network types and the option to install on hardware ranging from an individual laptop or cloud instance to a full server rack.

When using Incus, you can manage your instances (containers and VMs) with a simple command line tool, directly through the REST API or by using third-party tools and integrations. Incus implements a single REST API for both local and remote access.

The Incus project was created by Aleksa Sarai as a community driven alternative to Canonical's LXD.
Today, it's led and maintained by many of the same people that once created LXD.

I did, but it's a home machine, personal use. So, it didn't matter for me, but for family...that was another story! :) I just pulled the main boot drive, put a different one and installed it and went through the process. Then went back to the Proxmox drive after.

Haha, alright then.

I thought you hijacked a VM Host at work to play with ;)

The Surprising Effect of Stress on Your Brain’s Reward System

in reply to cyrano

First, they observed brain activity while the mice were resting. Stress had changed the activity in the amygdala of the less resilient mice much more than it had in the resilient ones.

When the researchers gave the mice a choice between plain and sugar-sweetened water, the resilient mice easily chose the sugar water. But the less resilient mice became obsessed and often opted for the plain water.

Xia looked at brain recordings of the mice who chose the sweet water. Their amygdala was communicating with a nearby brain region called the hippocampus that remembers and predicts.

She saw a different pattern in the mice that could not decide whether to drink the plain or sweetened water. In those mice, the conversation between the two brain areas sputtered.
