Misskey is an unprecedented forking party. Sharkey is one of the many forks. Maintained by the Blåhaj folks, if I'm not mistaken.

Iceshrimp is another one to watch. Specifically Iceshrimp-NET, a full rewrite to fix the performance issues that probably play some role in why these forks often meet such sad ends.

It's not so much the performance issues that kill the projects -- instances with hundreds to a couple thousand users are very, very healthy for the fediverse -- it's that the codebase is...

Well, Misskey is a 10-year-old solo development project that's been cancelled at least once by the dev due to burnout, with documentation partially in broken english, and the rest in Japanese. Working with it is... yeah...

in reply to Kichae

I wish a lot of Western fediverse community helps Misskey dev in documentation and development.

It's sad that sometimes they don't want help Misskey community to globalize, and just soft-fork and even hard-forking the software. Misskey community is desperately need global contributor.

in reply to nasi_goreng

I would really love a more globalized development for misskey, but it is easier said than done. Majority of bug reports, release notes and even some comments are written in Japanese (yk kana/Kanji). It would take a lot more than translating the documentation. It is hard to even report a bug (without worrying if there is a bug report already present in Japanese) let alone fix one.
in reply to astro_ray

Yeah, I acknowledge that.

It's just there's a concern that any FOSS project that developed by non-English speaker will "force taken" by another "Western" maintainer. If we want fediverse to be truly inclusive, language barrier is something should be taken care for further maintreamization.

Maybe we can learn from English Asia community (usually on Facebook group) that already practicing multi-language community, where each people can speak their own language and still properly moderated and connected.

Hi @elena@calckey.world !
Thank for this article. I look forward to reading more from you.

You said that you're instance calckey.world only has 54 members. It use to have more, but about a year ago the admin asked us to move to sharkey.world as he no longer wanted to host Calckey. It seems like he has kept both domains at the end.

Software for creating music sheets

Hello everyone,
I am looking for software to write music sheets and tabs. A friend and music teacher uses Guitar Pro, but it's a little pricey for my occasional use.

It doesn't have to be an all-in-one solution. So for example, if you know a piece of software that does just cord visualization that's also highly appreciated.

Wonder why no one has mentioned lilypond so far.

Noteworthy composer has a free edition that I've used before. It was somewhat basic, but it gets the job done

An ice age infant’s 17,000-year-old DNA reveals he had dark skin and blue eyes

Summary

Researchers analyzed the 17,000-year-old remains of an Ice Age infant found in a southern Italian cave, uncovering details about his life, ancestry, and cause of death.

The child likely had dark skin, blue eyes, and curly hair, and his genome links him to the Villabruna cluster, an ancient post-Ice Age population.

He died from a genetic heart condition and showed signs of malnutrition and stress, likely linked to his mother’s difficult pregnancy.

This well-preserved skeleton offers rare insights into human life and health during the Last Glacial Maximum.

Yes, that's why I wrote "relatives".

But if he was a monozygotic twin, he could have genetic descendants from his brother.

Yes, it was in the quote. ;-) Not your reaction to it.

The infant also appears to be an ancestor of…

Settlers can't pay their bills as 'Israel's' multibillion war persists

Around two million Israeli settlers are facing difficulties paying their primary dues and bills and are grappling with the continuously deteriorating economic state as the war rages on for its 14th month, according to Israeli media.

Moody's downgraded "Israel's" sovereign credit rating to Baa1 from A2 in September, citing the escalating conflict in the region and concerns about long-term economic stability. Later in November, the agency maintained its negative outlook for "Israel", warning that further downgrades remain possible.

Germany: MPs vote on motion to declare no confidence in chancellor Olaf Scholz

After three hours of debate in the Bundestag, lawmakers are now casting ballots on the confidence vote. Scholz plans to lose the vote to clear the way to new elections on 23 February. By all accounts he has the votes he needs to ask President Frank-Walter Steinmeier later today to dissolve the parliament.

Every time I read about this, I have to ask: I have had an adult tooth removed and replaced with an implant. I'm scheduled to have another tooth removed (an incisor. I'm currently on a no biting things diet and I'm getting sick of soup). What happens if I take this medicine?

Snyder was rushed. WB saw the success of The Avengers and wanted a big movie like that and FAST. So the story was rushed and characters didn’t have enough time to develop. Then, the whole thing with justice league happened and they brought in Joss Whedon as a last blow just to make sure that nothing will be cohesive or make any sense
in reply to muyessir

Was Snyder really rushed though? He only made two out of the like five or six movies he had planned, at least on the planned schedule. Justice League was basically remade from scratch and ZSJL was made long after plans of completing Snyder's vision had been abandoned.

‘Something horrible’: Somerset pit reveals bronze age cannibalism

Summary

Archaeologists found evidence of a Bronze Age massacre and cannibalism in a Somerset pit.

At least 37 people, including children, were violently killed, dismembered, and likely eaten before being thrown into a 15-meter shaft.

The bones, discovered 50 years ago but recently re-examined, show signs of butchering and marrow extraction, with some bones chewed by human teeth.

Researchers suggest the massacre, dated between 2200BC and 2000BC, was a brutal act intended to terrorize the wider community.

This unprecedented find challenges assumptions about early Bronze Age Britain.

Anyone who has ever been in a British town centre on a Saturday night won’t be completely surprised
in reply to MicroWave

History teems with famines, and with famines you'll find cannibalism.

This is what we expect after the world runs out of water to run our farms. Mad Max with fewer cars and more cannibalism.

Strix Point AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 Yoga Pro 7 compatibility with Linux specifically EndeavourOS?

in reply to Brahvim Bhaktvatsal

Yep! I mean, it's been two years now. I've tried TLP, Powertop, and both combined.

They improve things but I still only get about 5 hours, half the battery life I did in Windows 11. I've accepted these downsides because I already have the laptop and can't just go buy a new one, but a device with proper Linux support has real upsides.

in reply to small_crow

Have you tried configuring the amd-pstate driver in GRUB? That helped me a fair bit with battery life, though having an ROG laptop also meant I was already using asusd, which tripled my battery life just by having reasonable fan and power level settings. I hadn't had any luck with TLP either.
