"Shares" now tracked and shown in profile
ActivityPub introduced to NodeBB the concept of sharing/announcing/boosting, and we enthusiastically supported this as a method of content discovery.
While we were processing these activities (and publishing our own), we weren't actively tracking them internally. That has changed in the latest commits (soon to be RC5); shared content from both local and remote users are tracked internally and can be viewed in the user profile.
For example, here is c/comicstrips from lemmy.world. As it is a Lemmy community, it only shares content, and does not produce any of its own.
Here is a quick recap of how sharing is handled in NodeBB:
- When remote users boost/repost content, NodeBB interprets this as a share.
- When local NodeBB admins move topics out of "uncategorized" and into a category, it is interpreted as a share and this activity is federated out to the admin's followers.
At this time unprivileged users cannot share content.

I made the switch yesterday
Just wanted to say I made the switch yesterday from Windows 11 to Fedora Linux, no dual booting. It took multiple installs though because the first two times I followed old instructions for installing the Nvidia drivers. The third time I found out that I can just install them through the software center when third party repositories are enabled and that worked like a breeze.
And I have to say it's a really good thing that the installer for Fedora is getting an overhaul soon because Anaconda is horribly confusing in its UX.
Edit: just wanted to add a hyfetch screenshot:

Marvelous :)
Good on you for taking this leap. The Linux community on Lemmy can help if you need any advice or guidance.
I have been rocking fedora for the last few years and I've been very pleased, also with an Nvidia GPU.
I'm curious if you have any resources to get setup with the Nvidia drivers, different from mine?
My reference has always been: rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA
And it's always worked like a charm, both for legacy hardware and new hardware.
sudo dnf upgrade.
I dunno why the software center forces you to reboot for updates, but it's typically unnecessary.
There's two different ways to update modern Linux system, either you apply the updates directly or you wait until the next reboot to apply them.
Fedora KDE allows you to choose which method you want to use when using the software center UI:
I dunno why the software center forces you to reboot for updates
Because it's more stable.
The big drawback of updating immediately is that you might end up with incompatible packages. Any application that is running while an update for it is installed will keep using the old version until the application is restarted or the system is rebooted. The kernel and some system applications never exit, that means that they will keep using the old version until you reboot.
You generally don't need to mess with drivers on Linux with desktop oriented distros.
One exception is Nvidia graphics cards IF you want to game. They'll work fine out of the box but for full gaming performance you've gotta install their proprietary drivers. (And this is slightly harder on Fedora due to their more aggressive anti-proprietary policies.)
I found it was pretty easy once I knew how ^^
Just enable third party repositories during the setup, search for Nvidia in the Software Center and install the drivers and follow the instructions displayed, done.
Currently the only thing for me that definitely needs improvement is the configuration of GDM
Preach bro
So, how many of these games can you REALLY NOT play on #linux?!
As a sledgehammer method, you could also switch to GeforceNOW.
Was your issue with Fedora or lxqt?
The latter is pretty spartan. I could see it being disappointing compared to Plasma.
IOF advance in southern Syria, occupy another 370 square kilometers
Al Mayadeen's correspondent reported on Tuesday that Israeli forces have advanced into some neighborhoods of the town of Hader in the Quneitra countryside, southern Syria. Meanwhile, an Israeli media outlet confirmed that "Israel" has occupied 370 square kilometers of Syrian territory.
The Israeli news site i24NEWS reported that Israeli occupation ground forces have destroyed military positions and assets belonging to the Syrian army in southern Syria.
According to the Israeli occupation's military correspondent Yinon Shalom Yitah, the operation targeted military infrastructure found in the region, which was affiliated with the Syrian army.

Dark mode, so that you can write articles from the beach or from your basement
It would be great if it respected my browser's prefers-color-scheme setting.
It uses the browser preference for light/dark theme by default
This doesn't work for me. It seems like you are using leptos_use::use_preferred_dark with server-side rendering which unfortunately uses the experimental Sec-CH-Prefers-Color-Scheme header which isn't supported by all browsers, e.g. Firefox.
In my opinion, it is way better to implement theme switching on the client side. The prefers-color-scheme media query is better supported across browsers and allows reacting to a change of the user's system preferences.

Oooh this will be perfect for a bunch of stuff I do.
Can you create new services or do you still need to create the .service file manually?
What about .timer files?
I've been thinking about a "create new service" feature but I'm not sure about two things:
1.how useful it can be
2.how to implement this to actually make life easier for end users
Adding a generic template would not be difficult.
I would absolutely use it. In fact creating and editing services would be the primary selling point IMO. It doesn't need to be much "easier" than doing it in the terminal or file explorer, to me the primary benefit would just be the ease of use of creating, loading, and starting a new service all in one place.
I think a generic template would be great.
You could turn the whole thing into a giant GUI settings screen, allowing navigation to an exectuable, after which you could provide some of the most typical options as sliders, number fields, switches, or whatever is suitable. But that would be a large amount of work, and I'm not sure it would simplify things much.
The starting point should just be a text field, but with a link to the service file docs for help/reference.
Program:
Launch options:
When: early/normal/login/graphical-start
Restart: never/once/alwaysJust spitballing here though.
And I have three pieces of feedback:
1. Ctrl + F doesn't always bring up the search.
2. I'm not seeing my custom services (one I made with and one without this tool)
3. When making a service it would be nice to have a tool tip explaining what every line does. Though I can understand (and there is an argument for) not including this as this can simply be out of scope.
(4. Please try to have it added to the fedora RPM so it can get auto updated :) )
Making life easier for end users means more documentation about what you are doing. I mean that's the main difference between Commandline and a GUI.
Oh look Avahi Service, let's stop it, what does it mean to stop it.
Creating a new Service, sure but what is needed, are there examples? Formfill lines with a hint what's needed, maybe some dropdown entries?
You got what I mean.
Fantastic, Linux needs tools like this for users who need to make occasional changes and inspect systemd.
For inspiration, I would suggest you also look at LaunchControl, which is a GUI tool to administer launchd on macOS.

So weird these tools are not commonly used - managing systemd remains one of the common terminal PITAs for everyone who doesn't appreciate the Great Holy Terminal
man wtf. I've been searching for something like this.
aw fuck, I thought this was a web interface like cockpit. ok nvm :(
NO! NO, I WON'T HAVE IT!
I will not give up my command line, obscure, non-obvious commands that control my machine!
It is an abomination that I don't have to search for, and then wade through hundreds of AI generated pages of useless information just to show me what services are running with systemd!
I am seriously considering starting my own startup system. I am thinking I could initiate (init) runlevels to start subsystems at various stages. If anyone is interested, hit me up.
wade through hundreds of AI generated pages of useless information
I personally find the best use of AI is to read those pages of useless information and summarise what I actually want to know.
Google: " hugo, show total number of posts not including pages " = advertising, a billion pages of partially but not entirely relevant information that takes ages to wade through.
Gemini: same question: Clear explanation and working examples in seconds.
They're both google, but one knows what I'm actually trying to say and doesn't (yet) push advertising at me.
I am running a headless server, but still want to make managing my systemd services easier. Any recommendations? I think I'm looking for something that is to systemd what htop is to top🤔
EDIT: Thanks for all the recs!
Looks neat, does its job.
If you're a power-user looking at this, you can also look at github.com/rgwood/systemctl-tu… which is somewhat similar but seems to be more useful (for now), also showing the service logs and being easily navigable with a keyboard.
I switched to linux a little over a year ago and went with MX Linux because they have great GUI tools for windows refugees like myself, and because they don't like systemd over there they use cron jobs. Now, having switched to Nobara I've just installed both SystemD Pilot here, but also found KCron, a KDE Cron configuration module which allows for the same functionality as what I'm used to.
If I just want to setup a "when system starts" daemon, is there really any difference in using one over the other? I guess it's possible to shut down services more gracefully?
In any case, great job on this utility.
PeerTube v7 : offer a complete makeover to your video platform !
cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/23232856
PeerTube is a decentralized and federated alternative to YouTube. The goal of PeerTube is not to replace YouTube but to offer a viable alternative using the strength of ActivityPub and P2P protocols.Being built on ActivityPub means PeerTube is able to be part of a bigger social network, the Fediverse (the Federated Universe). On the other hand, P2P technologies help PeerTube to solve the issue of money, inbound with all streaming platform : With PeerTube, you don't need to have a lot of bandwidth available on your server to host a PeerTube platform because all users (which didn't disable the feature) watching a video on PeerTube will be able to share this same video to other viewers.
If you are curious about PeerTube, I can't recommend you enough to check the official website to learn more about the project. If after that you want to try to use PeerTube as a content creator, you can try to find a platform available there to register or host yourself your own PeerTube platform on your own server.
The development of PeerTube is actually sponsored by Framasoft, a french non-for-profit popular educational organization, a group of friends convinced that an emancipating digital world is possible, convinced that it will arise through actual actions on real world and online with and for you!
If you want to contribute to PeerTube, feel free to:
- report bugs and give your feedback on Github or on our forums
- submit your brillant ideas on our Feedback platform
- Help to translate the software, following the contributing guide
- Make a donation to help to pay bills inbound in the development of PeerTube.

Purpose-built for Security Testing
What makes Kali Linux unique is its purpose-built nature for security testing. While other Linux distributions may have security tools, Kali Linux integrates a vast array of them out of the box. This saves time for professionals who require a quick setup for penetration testing and ethical hacking tasks.
Wide Array of Pre-installed Tools
Kali Linux boasts a comprehensive selection of pre-installed tools, including but not limited to Wireshark, Nmap, Metasploit, and Aircrack-ng. These tools cover a broad spectrum of security assessments, from network scanning to vulnerability analysis and exploitation.
If you ever get involved in hacking, a lot and I mean a LOT of the tools are written in Python.
It can be a real PITA to set up a ton of different, standalone python programs, so kali linux comes with most of what people will need installed and ready to go.
Personal rant: Stop writing your programs in Python. If it's meant to be distributed, use a compiled language.
Except it is secure by design.
But you're right about it not being meant as a daily driver.
You mention "sane defaults". That might mislead someone because it is ambiguous. The terminal ~~defaults~~ used to default to a root prompt, exemplifying that it isn't a distro focused on sane defaults for a desktop distro.
Kali is a tool for a specific job. Its meant mostly for hacking or troubleshooting/analysis, being an OS for executing a collection CLI/TUI and GUI utils.
-Edited everything to make myself more intelligible.
Kali is secure as in once it's configured, it cannot be accessed without creds, keys etc.
That meets the definition of 'secure'. It's just Linux with a bunch of pre installed packages.
Of course something can always be more secure. But saying Kali isn't secure is like me saying your PC isn't secure because it isn't air gapped like my most secure PC.
PCs aren't secure. Linux default isnt secure. Kali has so many apps/tools installed by default that it isnt comparable to default Linux. It has massive attack surface and no security design, therefore calling it secure isn't accurate.
If no effort was put into the security design of an OS, why call it secure?
Okay if I turned off password auth, just used keys, disabled the Kali user and root login, how are you breaking in?
Where's the vulnerability? Which cve or cwe are you able to exploit?
A large attack surface doesn't mean insecure. It just means less secure.
Source: I literally pentest for a living.
No, I don't even use Kali on a regular basis.
I am not a troll. You don't need to be an ass.
Just because a system doesnt have a CVE doesn't make it secure. It needs proper exploit mitigations. Read why Linux isn't secure here.. The article is written by the lead developer of Whonix OS (Security hardened Debian with a focus on anonymity). If you had checked out any of the references from my previous comments you would have learned more about why I have this opinion.
Kali isn't any more secure than regular Debian, while also having a larger attack surface, and no kernel hardening, protecting of GUI, or application isolation. What makes it "secure"?

And before you dismiss this as Drew's rambling, I would trust him any day than any of the hyprland devs.
I mean, sure its a problem, but it seems to be largely just about the one occurance of the problem.
Otherwise it seems like the bulk of the post and vaxrys response to that post are about how it was handled and idk if I would have handled it better if I was in that sort of situation.
When I went into the community briefly both on github and discord I was met with immense help to my problems with hyprland (which I now don't use just because I realized I didn't need to mess with window management)
If I recall vaxry is young and has some social nuance to learn, this doesn't excuse behaviors but I can choose to accept a solid attempt at handling a wrongdoing.
Interesting, do you only use software from "good people"? Like X (twitter), Brave Browser and oh, obviously Lemmy itself?
I mean, I use hyprland because it's f*cking awesome, I never heard about how bad their devs are, I only check these stuff if I consider to "donate a coffee" for the devs. And I never tossed a coin for hyprland.
Why shouldn't I use it?
he never said you shouldn't use it, just that you shouldn't support them
using it isn't supporting them.
...now it's (probably) the most popular Wayland window manager.
KWin and Mutter probably hold that title and likely will for many years to come. There would have to be a mass exodus or software switch in Plasma and Gnome before Hyprland could match their market share.
- Toxic community
- C++ (I prefer Rust compositors like Niri)
Pentium II and 160MB RAM are plentiful, and it is no surprise that NetBSD is a breeze to use on it.
I got NetBSD running on a ThinkPad 760XD (Pentium MMX, 32MB RAM) which I revived around last summer, and it works just fine. Though running emacs on it is not a smooth experience with my configuration loaded, but it runs well vanilla. With enough tweaking, it can be a capable writing machine, especially with its flip-up keyboard.
The blog post is really good and insightful. I have never considered connecting aforementioned machine to the internet, but I think I might do it after reading this post just to try out Dillo.
