So I guess the show is over?
Not that I'd be mad if it is, I prefer it when shows wrap up on a high note.
Haha! I was curious because I collect physical media and plan on getting the new Bluey S01-S03 DVD set next month. I've only seen the show on Disney+ but it looks like the DVD is from the BBC.

I guess there's no way to get the show uncensored then?
I avoid piracy if I can support a work physically by buying it (or even digitally if it's on iTunes cuz I can removed the DRM).
Turns out that the Blu-Ray version of this does have banned episodes so I'll be getting that one: amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews…

A local paper braves Russian bombs to deliver news on the front lineThe Economist
... The soldiers seem to believe the counter-invasion was worth it, if only for giving the Russians a dose of their own medicine. “When I stepped foot in Kursk, I understood what they felt when they entered Ukraine,” says Sergeant Mokritsky. “Let them die and rot on their own lands, and the more of them the better.”
i wonder what ukranian and russian relations will be like going into the future and i wonder if the historical ties that they've shared all the way up until the americans started pushing them into nato's fold will keep them together.
i suspect that the animosity is going to manifest itself in strange ways like how armed conflict between the united states and mexico has engendered a culture where mexicans denigrate mexican-americans. however, the ukranians had historically been an economic & technological powerhouse for the soviet bloc; not some of relatively uneducated & poor sea of brown people who had the misfortune of living above exploitable resources and nearby a rich superpower.
also: the author's english is fascinating; it's recognize-able if you're fluent enough in another language besides american english and i wonder if a british person would find some of the word tensing interesting too.
It's important to keep in mind how Ukraine was put together in the first place when USSR was formed. It consists of several different ethnic groups. Eastern Ukraine in particular used to be part of Russia, and it's largely populated by ethnic Russians. My prediction is that Russia will be able to assimilate territories like Odessa, Kharkov, and Dnepropetrovsk with relative ease. This might even extend to central Ukraine and places like Kiev. Most people in Ukraine don't hate Russia, and Zelensky originally campaigned on normalizing relations. It's also becoming clear to Ukrainians that the west used them and now they're going to be discarded.
The thing with wars of attrition is that people who genuinely wanted to fight largely end up dying in the war, and the rest of the population just wants the war to end at that point. I expect that the way GDR war formed after the end of WW2 could be similar to what we'll see happen in Ukraine as well.
My expectation is that Russia will absorb the territories that are either pro Russian or neutral, and then leave parts of western Ukraine that are hostile to Russia to become Europe's problem. It's going to be a dysfunctional rump state that's going to require huge amounts of money to prop up, and if it fails then Europe would be looking at a huge refugee crisis.

"Shares" now tracked and shown in profile
ActivityPub introduced to NodeBB the concept of sharing/announcing/boosting, and we enthusiastically supported this as a method of content discovery.
While we were processing these activities (and publishing our own), we weren't actively tracking them internally. That has changed in the latest commits (soon to be RC5); shared content from both local and remote users are tracked internally and can be viewed in the user profile.
For example, here is c/comicstrips from lemmy.world. As it is a Lemmy community, it only shares content, and does not produce any of its own.
Here is a quick recap of how sharing is handled in NodeBB:
- When remote users boost/repost content, NodeBB interprets this as a share.
- When local NodeBB admins move topics out of "uncategorized" and into a category, it is interpreted as a share and this activity is federated out to the admin's followers.
At this time unprivileged users cannot share content.

I made the switch yesterday
Just wanted to say I made the switch yesterday from Windows 11 to Fedora Linux, no dual booting. It took multiple installs though because the first two times I followed old instructions for installing the Nvidia drivers. The third time I found out that I can just install them through the software center when third party repositories are enabled and that worked like a breeze.
And I have to say it's a really good thing that the installer for Fedora is getting an overhaul soon because Anaconda is horribly confusing in its UX.
Edit: just wanted to add a hyfetch screenshot:

Welcome aboard!! 😁
Marvelous :)
Good on you for taking this leap. The Linux community on Lemmy can help if you need any advice or guidance.
I have been rocking fedora for the last few years and I've been very pleased, also with an Nvidia GPU.
I'm curious if you have any resources to get setup with the Nvidia drivers, different from mine?
My reference has always been: rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA
And it's always worked like a charm, both for legacy hardware and new hardware.
sudo dnf upgrade
.
I dunno why the software center forces you to reboot for updates, but it's typically unnecessary.
There's two different ways to update modern Linux system, either you apply the updates directly or you wait until the next reboot to apply them.
Fedora KDE allows you to choose which method you want to use when using the software center UI:
I dunno why the software center forces you to reboot for updates
Because it's more stable.
The big drawback of updating immediately is that you might end up with incompatible packages. Any application that is running while an update for it is installed will keep using the old version until the application is restarted or the system is rebooted. The kernel and some system applications never exit, that means that they will keep using the old version until you reboot.
You generally don't need to mess with drivers on Linux with desktop oriented distros.
One exception is Nvidia graphics cards IF you want to game. They'll work fine out of the box but for full gaming performance you've gotta install their proprietary drivers. (And this is slightly harder on Fedora due to their more aggressive anti-proprietary policies.)
I found it was pretty easy once I knew how ^^
Just enable third party repositories during the setup, search for Nvidia in the Software Center and install the drivers and follow the instructions displayed, done.
Currently the only thing for me that definitely needs improvement is the configuration of GDM
Preach bro
So, how many of these games can you REALLY NOT play on #linux?!
As a sledgehammer method, you could also switch to GeforceNOW.
Was your issue with Fedora or lxqt?
The latter is pretty spartan. I could see it being disappointing compared to Plasma.
IOF advance in southern Syria, occupy another 370 square kilometers
Al Mayadeen's correspondent reported on Tuesday that Israeli forces have advanced into some neighborhoods of the town of Hader in the Quneitra countryside, southern Syria. Meanwhile, an Israeli media outlet confirmed that "Israel" has occupied 370 square kilometers of Syrian territory.
The Israeli news site i24NEWS reported that Israeli occupation ground forces have destroyed military positions and assets belonging to the Syrian army in southern Syria.
According to the Israeli occupation's military correspondent Yinon Shalom Yitah, the operation targeted military infrastructure found in the region, which was affiliated with the Syrian army.

Dark mode, so that you can write articles from the beach or from your basement
It would be great if it respected my browser's prefers-color-scheme
setting.
It uses the browser preference for light/dark theme by default
This doesn't work for me. It seems like you are using leptos_use::use_preferred_dark
with server-side rendering which unfortunately uses the experimental Sec-CH-Prefers-Color-Scheme
header which isn't supported by all browsers, e.g. Firefox.
In my opinion, it is way better to implement theme switching on the client side. The prefers-color-scheme
media query is better supported across browsers and allows reacting to a change of the user's system preferences.

Introducing SystemD Pilot, GUI app for managing systemd services
SystemD Pilot is a desktop application for managing systemd services on GNU/linux machines.
The app is very lightweight and supports common tasks such as starting and stopping systemd services.
It can also show detailed status for each service.
Features:
List services
Filter by running state
Start, Stop, Restart, Enable and Disable services + show status for each service
Create override configuration for any unit file using the edit button
Option for reloading systemd manager configuration (systemctl daemon-reload)
Easy search. Just start typing and the app will find relevant services
Lightweight
Available for download as deb, rpm and AppImage
Integration into GNOME desktop (libadwaita)
Made with love for the FOSS community. Please give it a try and share your thoughts.

Oooh this will be perfect for a bunch of stuff I do.
Can you create new services or do you still need to create the .service file manually?
What about .timer files?
I've been thinking about a "create new service" feature but I'm not sure about two things:
1.how useful it can be
2.how to implement this to actually make life easier for end users
Adding a generic template would not be difficult.
I would absolutely use it. In fact creating and editing services would be the primary selling point IMO. It doesn't need to be much "easier" than doing it in the terminal or file explorer, to me the primary benefit would just be the ease of use of creating, loading, and starting a new service all in one place.
I think a generic template would be great.
You could turn the whole thing into a giant GUI settings screen, allowing navigation to an exectuable, after which you could provide some of the most typical options as sliders, number fields, switches, or whatever is suitable. But that would be a large amount of work, and I'm not sure it would simplify things much.
The starting point should just be a text field, but with a link to the service file docs for help/reference.
Program:
Launch options:
When: early/normal/login/graphical-start
Restart: never/once/always
Just spitballing here though.
And I have three pieces of feedback:
1. Ctrl + F doesn't always bring up the search.
2. I'm not seeing my custom services (one I made with and one without this tool)
3. When making a service it would be nice to have a tool tip explaining what every line does. Though I can understand (and there is an argument for) not including this as this can simply be out of scope.
(4. Please try to have it added to the fedora RPM so it can get auto updated :) )
Making life easier for end users means more documentation about what you are doing. I mean that's the main difference between Commandline and a GUI.
Oh look Avahi Service, let's stop it, what does it mean to stop it.
Creating a new Service, sure but what is needed, are there examples? Formfill lines with a hint what's needed, maybe some dropdown entries?
You got what I mean.
Fantastic, Linux needs tools like this for users who need to make occasional changes and inspect systemd
.
For inspiration, I would suggest you also look at LaunchControl, which is a GUI tool to administer launchd
on macOS.

So weird these tools are not commonly used - managing systemd remains one of the common terminal PITAs for everyone who doesn't appreciate the Great Holy Terminal
man wtf. I've been searching for something like this.
aw fuck, I thought this was a web interface like cockpit. ok nvm :(
NO! NO, I WON'T HAVE IT!
I will not give up my command line, obscure, non-obvious commands that control my machine!
It is an abomination that I don't have to search for, and then wade through hundreds of AI generated pages of useless information just to show me what services are running with systemd!
I am seriously considering starting my own startup system. I am thinking I could initiate (init) runlevels to start subsystems at various stages. If anyone is interested, hit me up.
wade through hundreds of AI generated pages of useless information
I personally find the best use of AI is to read those pages of useless information and summarise what I actually want to know.
Google: " hugo, show total number of posts not including pages " = advertising, a billion pages of partially but not entirely relevant information that takes ages to wade through.
Gemini: same question: Clear explanation and working examples in seconds.
They're both google, but one knows what I'm actually trying to say and doesn't (yet) push advertising at me.
I am running a headless server, but still want to make managing my systemd services easier. Any recommendations? I think I'm looking for something that is to systemd
what htop
is to top
🤔
EDIT: Thanks for all the recs!
Looks neat, does its job.
If you're a power-user looking at this, you can also look at github.com/rgwood/systemctl-tu… which is somewhat similar but seems to be more useful (for now), also showing the service logs and being easily navigable with a keyboard.
I switched to linux a little over a year ago and went with MX Linux because they have great GUI tools for windows refugees like myself, and because they don't like systemd over there they use cron jobs. Now, having switched to Nobara I've just installed both SystemD Pilot here, but also found KCron, a KDE Cron configuration module which allows for the same functionality as what I'm used to.
If I just want to setup a "when system starts" daemon, is there really any difference in using one over the other? I guess it's possible to shut down services more gracefully?
In any case, great job on this utility.
