I avoid piracy if I can support a work physically by buying it (or even digitally if it's on iTunes cuz I can removed the DRM).

Turns out that the Blu-Ray version of this does have banned episodes so I'll be getting that one: amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews…

this feels like a meme from the future we don’t understand yet

The vast majority – around 96% - had a death deemed "reasonably foreseeable", due to severe medical conditions such as cancer.

You're forgetting everyone who fled and all the kids and relativea of dead soldiers. Those who gave up or lost something that close will require an enemy of evil to make the sacrifice worth it
in reply to freagle

People who fled are unlikely to come back, and they wouldn't have fled if they actually wanted to fight. There obviously will be people who are resentful, but that was that the case in Germany after WW2 as well. My expectation is that majority of people who have a grudge will just flee to the west.
in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

Sure, but they will still be able to affect the situation, like gusanos in the USA.
in reply to freagle

Gusanos are little more than a fig leaf for American imperialism. They don’t direct policy, they’re just there for the photo ops and op-eds as needed.
in reply to nohaybanda [he/him]

They have a noticeable influence on elections and therefore are forever part of policy calculus.
in reply to nohaybanda [he/him]

I think de-escalations are the one area where a rabid electorate would have a policy impact.

Sarah Michelle Gellar changes her mind on 'Buffy' reboot, now 'maybe' open to it

Creating new IP is a long term strategy that harms short term objectives at the benefit of long term ones.

Most execs are not incentivized to do anything but max this quarters profit. Execs are only concerned with the immediate as their salaries are based on quarterly and annual objectives.

The system is designed to race to the bottom. Who can create the most revenue while providing the very least to the consumer.

Fair point. That's why I wouldn't be shocked to see theatrical re-releases overshadow new movies at the cinemas within the next few years.

I know that AI can get things wrong but I don't know that Gemini or GPT would get a story that wrong in a summary. Apple's AI is an embarassment.

"Shares" now tracked and shown in profile

ActivityPub introduced to NodeBB the concept of sharing/announcing/boosting, and we enthusiastically supported this as a method of content discovery.

While we were processing these activities (and publishing our own), we weren't actively tracking them internally. That has changed in the latest commits (soon to be RC5); shared content from both local and remote users are tracked internally and can be viewed in the user profile.

For example, here is c/comicstrips from lemmy.world. As it is a Lemmy community, it only shares content, and does not produce any of its own.

Here is a quick recap of how sharing is handled in NodeBB:

  • When remote users boost/repost content, NodeBB interprets this as a share.
  • When local NodeBB admins move topics out of "uncategorized" and into a category, it is interpreted as a share and this activity is federated out to the admin's followers.

At this time unprivileged users cannot share content.

I made the switch yesterday

Just wanted to say I made the switch yesterday from Windows 11 to Fedora Linux, no dual booting. It took multiple installs though because the first two times I followed old instructions for installing the Nvidia drivers. The third time I found out that I can just install them through the software center when third party repositories are enabled and that worked like a breeze.

And I have to say it's a really good thing that the installer for Fedora is getting an overhaul soon because Anaconda is horribly confusing in its UX.

Edit: just wanted to add a hyfetch screenshot:

i tried Fedora 40 lxqt in vm, and it was a huge disappointment. openSUSE kde and Garuda KDE are much better. However, my laptop as it seems is totally incompatible with linux kernel, due to its highly propriatry hardware. MSI Gf63 Thin 9sc

Was your issue with Fedora or lxqt?

The latter is pretty spartan. I could see it being disappointing compared to Plasma.

IOF advance in southern Syria, occupy another 370 square kilometers

Al Mayadeen's correspondent reported on Tuesday that Israeli forces have advanced into some neighborhoods of the town of Hader in the Quneitra countryside, southern Syria. Meanwhile, an Israeli media outlet confirmed that "Israel" has occupied 370 square kilometers of Syrian territory.

The Israeli news site i24NEWS reported that Israeli occupation ground forces have destroyed military positions and assets belonging to the Syrian army in southern Syria.

According to the Israeli occupation's military correspondent Yinon Shalom Yitah, the operation targeted military infrastructure found in the region, which was affiliated with the Syrian army.

We have to keep reminding people who celebrate the collapse of Syria's government that this is a direct consequence.

Hopefully Syria doesn't become another Libya.

Sounds like you are familiar with this topic. I dont have time to work more on this particular aspect (there are lots of other tasks like comment support, federation with Lemmy, etc). But contributions are definitely welcome, preferably directly to leptos_use so that others can benefit and its easier to maintain.

Option for reloading systemd manager configuration (systemctl daemon-reload)

Easy search. Just start typing and the app will find relevant services

Lightweight

Available for download as deb, rpm and AppImage

Integration into GNOME desktop (libadwaita)

Made with love for the FOSS community. Please give it a try and share your thoughts.

I switched to linux a little over a year ago and went with MX Linux because they have great GUI tools for windows refugees like myself, and because they don't like systemd over there they use cron jobs. Now, having switched to Nobara I've just installed both SystemD Pilot here, but also found KCron, a KDE Cron configuration module which allows for the same functionality as what I'm used to.
If I just want to setup a "when system starts" daemon, is there really any difference in using one over the other? I guess it's possible to shut down services more gracefully?

In any case, great job on this utility.

Services are the more standard way of doing that. They are more resilient and you could troubleshoot more easily. Glad you are happy with systemd Pilot. Feel frree to share your thoughts or ask for new features.
