I have good news and bad news. Our Call for Participation for the Social Web track at FOSDEM 2025 was extremely successful; we had almost 40 submissions of great talks about Free and Open Source software for the Fediverse.

The bad news is that we’ve got only a 4 hours of time at FOSDEM, and we’ve been unable to allocate more time for the track.

So, right now, I’m looking for space in Brussels for additional space for an offsite event — “Social Web After Hours”, let’s call it — to run on Friday night Jan 31 or Sunday night Feb 2.

If you’re aware of a meeting space in Brussels, close to the centre or to the FOSDEM venue, that would accommodate an audience of 50-100 people and has screens for presentations, available for maybe 2 hours, please let me know. It would be great to have some Social Web discussions on the FOSDEM fringe.

in reply to Evan Prodromou

The "After Hours" talk is going to be pretty fantastic. We have a few great speakers already confirmed. It looks like we also got some overflow space in the BOF room for some lightning talks. There is going to be a lot going on at #FOSDEM for the #SocialWeb.

S3FS Uploading Files Twice

Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed that when I create a file in the mounted directory, it gets uploaded twice. I came across this GitHub issue: github.com/s3fs-fuse/s3fs-fuse… which basically says this is the intended behavior.

Is there any way to avoid this? I’m concerned because this effectively doubles the cost of storing files.

Here’s what my /etc/fstab entry looks like:

s3fs#nextcloud101 /mnt/nextcloud101 fuse _netdev,passwd_file=/etc/passwd-s3fs,url=https://s3.eu-central-003.backblazeb2.com/ 0 0

For context, I’ll be using this with Nextcloud.

What’s the best way to deal with this?

Thanks in advance!

Polismordet i Mjölby.

Casual Fediverse Resources, or a Traveler's Guide to the Fediverse

in reply to ElectroVagrant

just a suggestion; for the first header you can unshorten Fed to Fediverse

What's the Fed

Referring as Fed might confuse new arrivals and Fediverse is a commonly accepted term afaik👍

Another suggestion:

From there, you then curate what the community's found to suit your interests as you would in other places, following/subscribing and blocking, muting, or keyword filtering, depending on where you're participating from.

From there, you can:

- opt-out and [block, mute, filter] by [users, communities, instances.

A CNN team rescued a ‘prisoner’ from Syrian jail. Now, the outlet admits he was an Assad torturer

oh wow, a major media outlet caught lying? I would be shocked, flabbergasted even, if it weren't business as usual for them (emphasis on business)

France returns flag to Damascus embassy as new Syria authorities build contacts with West

DAMASCUS, Dec 17 (Reuters) - France raised its flag at its Damascus embassy on Tuesday for the first time in 12 years and European Union officials prepared to engage with the new Syrian leadership, a sign of the growing contacts after Bashar al-Assad was ousted as president.

Western states are gradually opening channels to the new authorities in Damascus led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and its leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, though they continue to designate the group as terrorists.

As well as France and Britain, which sent a team to meet Sharaa on Monday, Germany is also planning meetings with the new administration and the European Union said on Tuesday it will also establish contacts.

UN monitor says reviving Iran deal now irrelevant, since Tehran on cusp of nuke

The UN’s top atomic regulator said this week that there was little point in trying to revive the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, with Iran already practically a nuclear threshold state.

The comments by International Atomic Energy Agency head Rafael Grossi in Italy on Monday underlined growing frustration by the UN monitor toward Iran, which has blown past stockpile limits set by the landmark pact and spurned inspections since Washington abandoned the deal in 2018.

Under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, Iran was only permitted to enrich uranium to 3.68 percent purity, a level consistent with civilian uses of nuclear technology that Iran claims are its only pursuit, capping its stockpile at 300 kilograms.

But according to an IAEA report handed to member states and leaked to the press earlier this month, Iran has begun dramatically expanding its production of uranium enriched to near-weapons grade levels, collecting enough material for several bombs already.

What problem are they supposed to have been helping solve, and is it something we should realistically rely on corporate media to ever solve[1]?
