'Unprecedented': How bird flu became an animal pandemic

Good thing they're making masks illegal because of the pro-Palestinian protests and the CEO assassination.

Unfortunately because of email services being monopolized by Microsoft and Google I wouldn't be shocked to see them block X Mail and make it basically worthless.

For as much as the Joe Biden administration seems bent of increasing customer convenience with its dying breath, I wish they'd do something to keep Microsoft and Google from blocking personal/custom email servers.

I guess this was being sarcastic, but just in case it wasn't:

If you launch the game through Steam that probably won't matter, because Steam brings along its own libraries for games to use. That collection of libraries is called "Steam Runtime", and if the game only uses libraries from the Steam Runtime, it will run on any distribution that the Steam Runtime is compatible with (what afaik means basically all distributions).

There are some exceptions though. Graphics drivers for instance are not bundled in the Steam Runtime.

And last, but not least: Even if you don't run the game through Steam, it's probably just a bunch of libraries that need to be installed. They only need to be the same or a newer version than those used on the developers' build server.

I'm learning it little by little too, but I'm still at the very beginning. I agree It is known for its complexity. And It's quite different at least from European languages. But it's more interesting to study something unusual for you. :)
in reply to JustVik

For sure, it's an enjoyable kind of challenge. I also find some aspects of the language are actually easier than other languages I've learned. Not having conjugation is really nice since you just learn the word once, and the grammar is generally pretty straight forward. I got flustered about the tones at the start, but then just learned not to worry about it. People will understand you from the context even if you screw the tones up. Writing is the hardest part, but it's just a matter of repetition in the end.

Odds that the boat collision was intentional on the part of the coast guard?

systemd Pilot updated with new features

A few days ago I made a post about systemd Pilot, a GTK app for managing systemd services.

Today a new version has been released based on feedback I got here and on reddit.

The app now supports quick creation of systemd services using a template and monitoring journalctl logs for any service.

Please test the latest release and share your thoughts.

I haven't tried this yet, but I will. I have a question, though. Can this be used on a remote server over ssh?
in reply to chunkystyles

Only if you can vnc/rdp into you server or forward x11.
in reply to chunkystyles

Yes. I do this. You'll want to look up X forwarding.

Once set up, you should be able to execute GUI applications installed to machines you connect to via ssh, and have their GUI show up on the machine you are connecting from.

It’s great when you have a problem and you just stumble upon a solution on Lemmy out of nowhere.

Blob-headed fish and amphibious mouse among 27 new species found in ‘thrilling’ Peru expedition

Summary

Scientists conducting a biodiversity survey in Peru's Alto Mayo region discovered 27 new species, including a blob-headed fish, amphibious mouse, and arboreal salamander. The 38-day expedition recorded over 2,000 species.

Findings include a rare semi-aquatic mouse found in a threatened swamp forest and seven new fish species. Indigenous knowledge played a key role in identifying many species.

Scientists also documented 49 threatened species, underscoring the region’s ecological significance and supporting efforts to bolster local conservation initiatives.

in reply to MicroWave

Great article, but I'm surprised it didn't end with them saying they planned to follow up with the indigenous people and use their knowledge to help fill in the gaps...

Yet another example of western science thinking we have to reinvent the wheel - the person they interviewed said that all these "new" species were already known to the locals. Obviously we just needed to ask.
