Key warning signs about bird flu are all going in the wrong direction

in reply to floofloof

Trump is a notorious germophobe. Could someone please scare him a bit and get him to fire RFK Jr before it's too late?
in reply to floofloof

Actually, I am hoping RFK, Jr. gets him to try some raw bird flu milk.

This command is awkward 'docket exec -t vaultwarden sh' , let's just have docker sh vaultwarden already !

I thought this would be hard, but turns out the following oneliner does it, with maybe no sideeffects ?

echo 'docker() { [ "$1" = "sh" ] && docker exec -it "$2" sh || command docker "$@"; }' >> ~/.bashrc && source ~/.bashrc

This creates a bash alias for "docker ps" , every other command should run as normal

Now I just need to remember to run this one liner on every single computer I use in the future...

Oof freebsd has spoilt me, the equivalent would be appjail login vaultwarden

This is an excellent idea. Fortunately you're not the first to have it ;-)

You should look into alias.

1100 Declassified U.S. Nuclear Targets - Future of Life Institute

On December 22, 2015, the United States released declassified lists of targets for a massive nuclear strike on the USSR, Eastern Bloc countries, and China.

The secret document, compiled in 1956, spans 800 pages and reveals strategic points for a potential U.S. nuclear attack in the event of war with the USSR.

The list includes 179 targets in Moscow, 145 in Leningrad, and 91 in East Berlin, Beijing, and Warsaw.

The most shocking entry in this list is point No. 275—"population": alongside military and industrial facilities, civilian populations in residential areas were also marked for elimination.

in reply to propter_hog [any, any]

Bolivia isn't part of Central America, nor the other countries listed (Brazil, Chile, Guyana). I think you meant Latin America?
in reply to anarchoilluminati [comrade/them]

Yeah, these are all South American countries which I was aware of and why I was surprised about Central America being a destination.
in reply to HowAbt2morrow

People's Temple (the Jonestown folks) moved to ~~Guatemala~~ Guyana. There's also Colonia Dignidad in Chile and Joao de Dios in Brazil, although he's homegrown. Then there's all the Mennonites currently setting up farming communes in the Amazon.

France's military is being ousted from more African countries. Here's why

in reply to schizoidman

While this is a pretty good move (I mean, it's not like France had the choice at this time) it also means that other governments can take a position there instead.
There is a huge issue with Wagner being accused of killing and raping people and China is literally buying everything.
Rejecting strongly the current french military will probably create a weird situation for them...
in reply to ArDu

And what's wrong with other nations taking position there that aren't western? Sad you can no longer exclusively exploit African resources?
Chinese relations with the global South is infinitely better than American/Britiish/french relations. I absolutely welcome china but not so much about Russia
in reply to Shezzagrad

I don't particularly have an issue with the positions themselves, but I'm kind of sad that those african countries are just leaving an issue and welcoming another. It is true that the infrastructure are being developed but then the countries are not developing because they don't benefit long term. You could argue that they will benefit from better transports in general which is true but it only holds up until China is doing fine economically (which it isn't exactly today).

I don't care if it's a western country or not I'm just trying to find what would benefit those countries, and it doesn't seem that buying everything there will (or putting soldiers with other colors and ideas)

in reply to ArDu

Why do you think chinas economy is doing poorly when it's economy is growing while the US is still shrinking?
in reply to theonlytruescotsman

Their growth decreased quite a lot but they're still not entirely a developed economy. The real estate bubble kind of exploded leaving quite a lot of people on the side.

They have a demographic problem due to their past policies, social issues with work, the fact that you can't find a job after 30, and their wages being reduced by a pretty large percent (my sources are saying around 30-40%, can't find an official number because they do not exist).

It's the first time since a really long time that China came back to a single digit growth and this is not something you revert in a few months. It's not the end of China or anything but they're definitely not at their highest and won't be for some time. Meaning that political long-term investments may not be the priority and that they may give up those whenever they want, not when the country that benefited those will not need them anymore.

Again, not saying western countries are doing much better. But some are doing relatively worse than what they should be doing than others.

in reply to ArDu

Their growth decreased quite a lot but they’re still not entirely a developed economy

Their real gdp growth is still above 5% per year and their industry already far surpasses anything the "developed" economies have.

their wages being reduced by a pretty large percent (my sources are saying around 30-40%, can’t find an official number because they do not exist).

Yeah you are just making shit up. This is complete nonsense.

in reply to ArDu

The private luxury real estate market crashed, the only people hurt by this are foreign investors and people dumb enough to copy us strategies to build wealth instead of doing something of value with their lives. No one was made homeless.

Your second paragraph only affects the private sector, and thats generally true of all private economies right now; China just doesn't allow their private economy to effect the needs of the people.

Your third is mostly nonsense as no long term strategies have changed in the last few years except far more talks on whether real estate should be privatized in any way or if the private side of that industry has outlived it's usefulness; and of course an acceleration of space goals due to the potential for the EU and musk to take all useful leo orbits.

in reply to ArDu

but it only holds up until China is doing fine economically (which it isn’t exactly today).

Lol. Lmao even. Chinese trade with Africa is at an all time high and growing rapidly.

in reply to Shezzagrad

Well an important take here is that these nations are turning towards Russia because their mercenaries don't hold back against the islamists out of concern for collateral damage. For France, that's much more of a PR thing that they can't be seen shooting and raping as much. And for China... Interesting snippet from Cablegate was that even US diplomats were shocked by the lack of remorse or ethics shown by the Chinese in trying to get their hands on African resources. So I guess we'll see lol

"lack of remorse or ethics" = paying African nations more than all western corpos combined for the same resources?
in reply to theonlytruescotsman

Yeah I'm sure you've got the books lying in front of you right now and not just relying on some vague propaganda from the usual sources wink
in reply to nonailsleft

Ah yes, it must be... Russian propaganda that China uses business deals instead of raping, enslaving, and colonizing like the West did... And you're claiming this under a story where the oppressed populations just keep telling the former colonizers to get the fuck out or die; not a story of them kicking out China.
in reply to theonlytruescotsman

Generally I found more sensible people on Lemmy but I guess not everyone is that logical here 🤷
in reply to theonlytruescotsman

Well I hoped you could back up your claim that the Chinese are paying more for African resources "than all western corpos combined" but I guess you primarily want to type some 'strong man' language instead lol
in reply to schizoidman

"abusing civilians" is not the worst of the french army in Africa. Several civilians bombardment, letting genocide going, and sometimes helping. News on that topics are always too soft. Everybody know that imperialism is bad, but we underestimate by far bad it is.

I was on the way home Sunday with my kid. Going down a road that's 30mph. My house is on the left. I run my blinker on to turn into my driveway. A BMW speeds up and tries to pass on my left. Nearly T-Boned me. All I saw was the medallion and a lit-up UBER sign on the dash.

They managed to stop, flip me off, and sped away before I could even get my window down. What the fuck is thier issue?

Friendly Linux Tablet

Hey there,
Is there a source out there where I can find tablets fit for Linux..?
Am not after Pine or what have you...just a tablet, Samsung or what have you that can run Linux as custom rom.

Thanks

in reply to CkrnkFrnchMn

Don't know if it'll cover all your use cases, but I was looking for something similar and recently got my hands on a Steam Deck. Have been very pleased with the purchase so far. To be fair, I haven't gotten into customizing the desktop yet, but I'm sure anything's achievable since it's just running Arch.
in reply to ArseAssassin

I love my Steam Deck but it is unwieldy when used as a tablet. Also, software support is spotty for a tablet-like experience.

in reply to Arthur Besse

Lemmings do not engage in mass suicidal dives off cliffs when migrating. The scenes of lemming suicides in the 1958 Disney documentary film White Wilderness, which popularized this idea, were completely fabricated. The lemmings in the film were actually purchased from Inuit children, transported to the filming location in Canada and repeatedly shoved off a nearby cliff by the filmmakers to create the illusion of a mass suicide.[448][449] The misconception itself is much older, dating back to at least the late 19th century, though its exact origins are uncertain.[450][448]

Hmm, humanity sure has great ideas!

in reply to whyNotSquirrel

That was def a consideration in deciding the name of this platform. I was playing a lot of lemmings at the time, and learned that them being mindless suicidal drones is just ridiculously false. SO why not just own it and let the redditors think that they're the unique brain-geniuses, and have them call us something that is easily disproven.

[Fixed] Dual-Boot causing slow boot, solutions?

Quick and dirty is this:

Running a new dual boot system. Windows boots fine and fast. Grub bootloader grinds and grunts to startup. Systemd checks point to Fedora waiting on the Win10 disk to boot (+45s!!!). Obviously, I don't need that drive to run, but Fedora/Bootloader thinks it should.

Disconnected the Win10 drive, Fedora booted in 3.6s.

So... Windows bootloader knows to ignore the Fedora OS drive and launches fine. Fedora Bootloader insists it try everything to get that Win10 drive running to my own detriment.

Is there a way to just ignore the Win10 drive the way Win10 ignores Fedora?

Been scratching my head on this one for a bit to be honest.

EDIT: Seems the issue was caused by RAID incompatibility from my internal backups for Win10. The RAID drives wrongly pointed the finger at the boot disk because the only thing I could really make sense of in diagnostics was the Win10 boot stalling for 45+ seconds. Once I disconnected all the drives and incrementally reconnected them I quickly realised it was the backup drives and not a boot disk conflict as I wrongly assumed.

how are you booting windows from systemd?

systemd is not part of the bootloader.

in reply to eldavi

how are you booting windows from systemd?

I'm not. I ran some Systemd-analyze, blame etc once Fedora started up and saw that most of my startup lag was caused by a specific drive on boot.

systemd is not part of the bootloader.

Yes, and so I used the systemd tools to figure out what was causing my issues on boot.

As I explained in a reply in this thread it seems my issue is mostly resolved for now. The bootloader was stalling on initializing a pair of drives I have in RAID for system backups on the M$ side.

This is turn, when running -analyze or other tools showed the drive that contained my Win10 machine stalling out and waiting 45+ seconds to initialise. Because /it/ was actually waiting for the RAID drives to sort it the hell out. So, it looked like there was a conflict between both boot disks when in reality the stall was a symptom of Linux not playing nice with RAID.

I wrongly assumed it was a boot disk conflict similar to some Windows dual boots where the two disks may be fighting with each other for boot priority and causing a fight until one timed out.
