Il primo motivo ha a che fare con le caratteristiche geografiche del territorio. Il Darièn Gap, come già detto, è coperto da fitte foreste, giungla e montagne, ma non solo: vi è un'umidità molto alta a causa della vicinanza ai due Oceani, Atlantico e Pacifico, e piove ben 330 giorni l'anno. Per questo, la zona è molto soggetta a frane e alluvioni. Ciò rende il terreno molto instabile, e dunque costruire una strada diventa impegnativo e costoso. Ma non basta.
Il secondo motivo è dato dalla presenza di animali molto pericolosi per l'uomo. Parliamo certamente delle rane velenose, i dendrobati, e di serpenti letali, ma anche di insetti come ragni e, soprattutto, zanzare. A complicare la situazione è la totale mancanza di ospedali nella zona, che rende potenzialmente mortale ogni infezione causata da malaria, dengue, zika, ragni o serpenti velenosi. Ogni anno, infatti, migliaia di migranti muoiono proprio per questo
Ora, queste due ragioni giustificano il motivo per cui l'attraversamento di questa zona possa essere davvero impegnativo, ma non giustificano totalmente il motivo per cui non vi siano strade.
Un terzo motivo riguarda la presenza di fattori geopolitici considerevoli. Proprio vicino al Darièn Gap, infatti, è situato il canale di Panama, fondamentale passaggio per collegare le due coste americane, i due Oceani, e rappresenta la zona di passaggio per il 6% del commercio mondiale. Negli ultimi anni, la Colombia ha sofferto una pesante guerra civile dovuta agli scontri tra i cartelli della droga. Per poterla esportare a nord, essi dovevano necessariamente trasportare la merce illegale via mare, rischiando di essere sgominati facilmente. Un'eventuale strada faciliterebbe l'accesso al canale di Panama da parte delle bande criminali, danneggiando un'infrastruttura necessaria, e facilitando il commercio di droga fino al Messico e agli USA. Inoltre, ricollegandoci alle difficoltà del passaggio del Darièn Gap, per poter passare i migranti devono dare soldi ad alcune bande criminali che ne controllano alcuni passaggi.
L'ultimo motivo per cui non è stata costruita una strada per collegare le due sponde del continente è chiaro: gli USA vogliono limitare l'immigrazione clandestina. Dunque, si oppongono a ogni possibile infrastruttura che ne possa agevolare il passaggio.
Tutte queste motivazioni spiegano l'importanza del Darièn Gap, e soprattutto il motivo che lo porta ad essere un confine naturale tra Nord e Sud America, nonché l'unico argine alla costruzione di una strada che colleghi l'Alaska alla Patagonia.

FOSS of the day: Ansible module for editing CUPS configuration files
I recently got a new printer, and as I’ve tweaked the integration between my printer and the numerous Linux desktops and laptops in my house, I became frustrated by how time-consuming and error-prone it was to have to use the Printers section of the GNOME Settings app, or the Printer Settings app (a.k.a. system-config-printer) to manually update the printer settings on multiple computers.
This finally came to a head when I realized that I wanted to have the printer configured with two different queues on each computer¹. It was time to figure out how to automate the configuration of CUPS queues with Ansible.
At this point I said to myself, “Surely the right way to do this is to use an Ansible module that knows how to manipulate CUPS configuration files, and surely someone has already written such a thing that I can grab and use myself!” But although I searched and searched, I was unable to find one, so I set out to write it myself.²
The result is the cups_conf Ansible module shown below, which I just wrote and am throwing out into the world on the off chance that someone else might benefit from it. I stuck a goodly amount of documentation at the top of the module code, but I’ll reiterate some of it here for the benefit of search engines. 😉
As far as I can tell, all of the CUPS configuration files have the same structure, so you could theoretically use this to edit any of them, but I think the one you’re going to care about most is /etc/cups/printers.conf.
You absolutely can’t edit printers.conf or any of the other CUPS configuration files while CUPS is running, so you need to shut down the CUPS service in your Ansible playbook while you are making edits.
If your printer supports driverless printing, a.k.a. “IPP Everywhere”, then I’m pretty sure the only printer setting you need to know to add a printer to cups is the correct DeviceURI setting. The easiest way to figure this out is to add the printer to one computer by hand, restart CUPS so it writes out printers.conf, and then pull the DeviceURI setting for the new printer out of printers.conf.
If your printer doesn’t support driverless printing or you can’t get it to work, or whatever, then in addition to adding the printer to printers.conf you’ll also want to deploy the correct PPD file for it into /etc/cups/ppd.
If you are modifying an existing printer or a printer that has existed in the past then there may be files for it cached in /var/cache/cups and you’ll want to remove those while CUPS is shut down so they won’t mask any changes you make.
The module takes these options:
path is the path to the configuration file you’re operating on.
section is the section in the configuration file, e.g., “Printer MyPrinter”.
option is the configuration option you’re operating on (if not specified, you’re operating on the entire section).
value is the value for that option.
state is “present” (default) or “absent” indicating whether the section or option should be there or not.
multi allows you to specify a list of dicts containing the above options (except path) to make multiple changes to the file in a single invocation of the module. If you use multi than you can also specify the above at the module level as defaults for the multis.
There’s an example in the module code which does the following:
Run the module in check mode to see if anything needs to change. If not, the rest of these steps are skipped
Stop CUPS.
Find cache files for the printer being updated and delete them.
Deploy the PPD file for the printer being updated.
Update printers.conf.
Start CUPS.
Bonus fact: I believe the configuration file format for Apache HTTPD is sufficiently close to the format for CUPS files that you can use this module without modification on those files as well. I haven’t tried it though.
¹I need both PostScript and PCL queues configured for this printer because the PostScript PPD comes from the manufacturer and therefore supports all of the printer’s features, but the generic PCL driver produces jobs that print much faster, so I want to use that driver by default and only use the PostScript driver when I need one of the printer’s esoteric features that only it supports.
²If in fact someone else has already written this, and you know where it is, please tell me so I can get rid of mine and use theirs instead. There is really no reason for two different people to maintain FOSS code that does the same thing.
Remap thumb buttons on the Evoluent Vertical Mouse under Linux
I use an Evoluent Vertical Mouse (VM4R). One of its advantage is the number of buttons. Instead of their defaults, I’d like to remap them to keypresses. I want to do this system-wide without an extra service.
This can be done via the hwdb subsystem. This has the advantage of being a fairly generic solution, which allows remapping any key/button to any other.
This is an interesting article of the fish shells journey of covering to rust which I found quite interesting. I'm especially interested because of projects I work with that are currently experimenting with rust.

I am a bit of a scatter-brain, have some notes in Google Keep, OneNote, Obsidian and in GitHub or other places. This is partially multiplied by splitting my work stuff with my home stuff.
What I like about every app I use so far: - OneNote: I like the way I can write on something like a canvas. Very useful if the note does fit the general theme of the page but not at the exact position. Also helps by utilizing the big space of a horizontal monitor. Also it now sports a very good mobile editor. - Obsidian: So easy to backlink between notes and I love the graph view. I also like the extension "code styler" which lets me format inline code blocks with syntax highlighting (e.g.: `{powershell icon} Get-ChildItem -Path C:\Path\To\Folder -Filter XYZ*`). I like to learn scripting but I also use obsidian for RL-stuff and technical non-code like keeping track of configs, settings, wishlists etc. - Google Keep: I bastardize the check-box feature to ke

What I dislike: - OneNote: - Quite difficult to link between notes (unsupported on mobile) - Limited to 1 folder deep notes. Currently work around that by using the horizontal space or multi notes. - A bit clunky to edit bigger notes - By microsoft. - Obsidian: - No native way to have everything on a server outside of using the obsidian-sync service for $4 or the community plugin which requires me to use some novel type of db called couch-db (ugh, another service to keep updated/troubleshoot). I can stomach the $4 but am limited to only one vault which I don't really like. - Google Keep: - Google - No real way to have everything backed up. Only use it for quick notes or for my shipment list. Everything else is probably exported to Obsidian/OneNote if I feel like doing house-keeping.
How I currently manage/store my files: - Right now I use - OneNote which is stored on OneDrive (I like how Outlook (classic) works and I got 1TB of cloud storage), - Obsidian which syncs with the plugin "remotely sync" to my OneDrive folder. - Google Keep: Dunno. Probably some account storage on google
What I want: - A primarily server-side setup or with a native sync feature that works like on OneNote: The true source is my server or the cloud, the client only streams/caches the data locally. I have no problem with individual markdown files. I just dislike the general need to sync them manually with external tools like syncthing. I already have a good backup solution on my main server and secondary server (For the curious: Veeam backup and replication that backs my proxmox VMs). No need to manage another set of backups. Another reason I want everything in one spot as I already have everything scattered. - A tree view of my notes like obsidian and OneNote does. Plus point if the app can even do sections like OneNote does. - (Optional) A way change-log of the edits done. Some apps do it by implementing git or have a very rudimentary way to manage that - Mobile/desktop companian app: PWA is okay but I would probably miss out on the caching feature. I would prefer an actual (android) app on my phone. Same for Windows.
What I found so far but have issues so far: - silverbullet: Server-side but seems to miss the side bar with the tree view (which can probably be added by another extension). Seems like the best candidate so far - Joplin: Seems alright to use but I can't use callouts which (to me) is mandatory to use with coding/scripting tasks. - Obsidian: Fits best of all I found but I dislike the $4. But still miles better as the former option which was (i believe) $15 monthly - BookStack: I bit limited how it manages the change-log. Seems okay - Outline: No way to sync it without Didnt try it out much but I like how it looks. - Logseq: Same issues as with obsidian: Paid sync. Didnt look much beyond - Joplin: Sufficient but no callouts :( - Trilium Notes: Maintenance mode. Not a deal-breaker but I don't want to migrate something that could maybe die :/
