Our hardware failed this morning and we're stuck waiting on OVH to investigate the support ticket I filed. They claim their support is 24/7 but live chat / phone is just business hours, so worst case we might be down until tomorrow =(

status.lemmy.ca/ has an update, but not much to say really except "It's down until it's not"

Edit: I'm assuming we're down until I can call / chat with them first thing in the morning, so expect to be back up early tomorrow (depending on how long the parts replacement takes).

Edit 2: I called them when I woke up at 6:30 PST and hopefully they'll fix it soon now....

Just changed all my maintenance messages to

It's increasingly common for "24x7 support" to mean access to their KB/FAQ and the ability to raise a ticket, while the actual support is a skeleton crew working regular hours.

Not unlike "your call is very important to us..." 😅

Weird to think what happens when you lose a site you visit on a regular basis. I can understand the whole instance going down but us users just get lost when things get turned off. There's no way to know what happened, why or when or if anything will return.

I had to resurrect my old lemmy.world account to figure out what happened. I guess we have to hang on to two or more unique instance accounts in case our main instance goes down.

Stay well guys and I totally appreciate the admins of lemmy.ca and all the work they do. I'll patiently wait and look forward to seeing it online again.

I keep trying to open the lemmy app on my phone out of habit.
in reply to Shadow

It feels shitty and I was doing the same thing all day. I had to resurrect my lemmy.world account just to get back online. It's made me realize that I should maintain both accounts for shut downs like this. And now I'm also having to do more in maintaining my Mastodon account too.
in reply to Shadow

I did that five times before remembering I had an old account on this instance that I could switch to to post the question and see what communities I used to be subscribed to.

At least it’s not like Reddit when the website goes down you can’t use it at all.

Google Maps is over! The tech giant complies with EU orders to remove navigation services from search results

For years, Google Maps has been a go-to tool for millions worldwide, seamlessly integrated into search results for instant access to directions, locations, and more. But if you’ve noticed something missing recently, you’re not imagining things. Due to European Union regulations, Google has been forced to remove its Maps functionality from its search results, marking a significant shift in how we interact with the tech giant’s ecosystem.

Ur askan i elden.

Oh hey that's awesome, maybe I'll put my RX460 back into the jellyfin VM for transcoding. I need to migrate that box anyway.

I watched LTT for years, since we were the same age, and NCIX was my local computer shop.

I noticed a steep decline in quality as LMG got bigger, and a greater focus on personalities and entertainment rather than substance. There's a market for that, and it appeals to the less knowledgeable or as an entry to tech as a hobby, or even people who just want tech-adjacent entertainment. I can't deny the reach and impact this team has, but the content isn't for me anymore.

Demersala kustkvoter i Västerhavet.

Reddit is Dead. Lemmy is Dead. Everything is Dead.

Just some thoughts I have on reddit and lemmy and some interesting things I have found. A piece of original content. No AI.

I think this is getting downvoted a little unfairly. I suspect this is mostly because the title went a bit too far in the "provocative" direction. If you were to build on this, I'd say extract the parts about setting up your own instance (everything after "In Comes Lemmy") and expand that.

A couple other thoughts:
- I agree that !unix_surrealism@lemmy.sdf.org is awesome, if you contact pmjv he'll probably respond
- You say: "When you use Lemmy, you have to subscribe to specific communities in order to see the content from those communities." which is not literally true -- you can just set your account to read "all", and a lot of people do that. Not sure what the default is, especially if you set up your own instance.

It finally occurs to me. When younger people complain about capitalism, it's the 21st century almost-feudal version of capitalism that they're complaining about.

The oligarchs/large corporations don't seem to stop wanting exceptional amounts of money more whilst everyday people are really struggling. I'm not taking about the bottom end of society who are double-decimated, but average everyday middle-classes and pensioners. Members of Governments have their noses in our trough too.

I understand what they mean now. Sorry it's taken me so long.

Add-on: I should add that I'm old now. I grew up in the change that was new-growth of Thatcher's premiership not the managed-decline winner-take-all that is the 21st century. I believed and I don't anymore.

god what a depressing comment I've made. Maybe it'll be better in the morning. 🤣😂

Think of our perception of capitalism as closer to your great grandparents'. Your statement of thatcher implies UK, so think before the unions and the council housing and for us yanks before the NHS. And with an oncoming doom from climate change. And that's in addition to the technofuedalism. The benefits of privatization increasingly feel like a bold faced lie to us

Well, there is Keynes

I don't think we can quite equate this shite to the 1930s but I take your point!

Interesting concept. I have a script that uses long term tokens and curl to tell HA to turn on certain things I need before running a certain game, then turns them back off afterward. Presumably this could take the place of that script.

It's an interesting idea, I wonder what other ideas people will have once it's working.

I just wish I could get my script to disable the screensaver in KDE. I have the command that should do it, and it's changing the right setting (ie, changing the same setting manually in the gui works correctly), but it seems like KDE isn't aware of the config change, and the things I've tried to get KDE to reload that config aren't working. No error, but the screen saver stays active.
