“A strong domestically owned and operated steel industry represents an essential national security priority and is critical for resilient supply chains.”

that guy is using this excuse too many times; he's starting to sounds like mccarthy during the red scare of the 1950's

He's right in this case though, steel production is absolutely indispensable for industrialising a nation and for industrial nation to keep its selfdetermination. And i'm loosely quoting not Biden but Lenin here, and history proved him right, with clearest examples being not only USSR, China and what happened after deindustrialisation of Eastern Europe, but even all imperialist countries.

It sounds like this industry is going to out of business if they don't get another auto industry like bailout and even that is temporary since America steel is not self sustaining.
in reply to eldavi

Quite possibly they will really do allow it, since deindustrialisation is a trend there, in the mouth of Biden those words are most likely just a racist and nationalist spurs rattling and the only thing behind them is just the Japanese chapter of yellow peril yet again.

“In response to COVID-19, our CoC saw an influx of rapid rehousing and prevention resources, as well as an effective statewide eviction moratorium,” reported a suburban CoC in the northeastern part of the US. “These efforts were effective in keeping households from entering into homelessness and moving households out of homelessness quickly. Since the sunsetting of these resources and the ending of the eviction moratorium, our COC has seen a large influx of new families and individuals seeking emergency shelter assistance.”

Indeed, Biden’s administration oversaw the rollback of COVID-19 social services and protections, including unemployment, additional public healthcare, and eviction moratoriums throughout the country. The administration also oversaw one of the largest increases in cost of living in recent history, which still plagues the people of the US.

they rolled back the solution and then blamed immigrants; the democrats didn't shift right, they're already rightists.

Syrians accuse rulers of imposing Islamist agenda in new curriculum

Funny how all the same libs who do their constant hand wringing over human rights in Iran are cheering for extremists taking power in Syria now.

Don't worry, in ten years the US will be sanctioning Syria and threatening to invade due to the islamists they cheered on and funded in this conflict.

VoxeLibre 0.88 – Back on Track is finally live!

cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/23733414

This release took some time, but it's worth it! VoxeLibre is back on track with development.

Minecarts are reworked and you can put them back on track; a new projectile system will make combat and adventure smoother; new original weapons (spears and hammers!) with unique functions will aid you there; and then you can enjoy a nice show of new fireworks on an improved sky... All the while farming mobs and plants, utilizing the improvements to their systems! And this is not the end...

Change log: git.minetest.land/VoxeLibre/Vo…

in reply to SplashJackson

Unfortunately, I have no idea. That's probably more related to Luanti (formerly Minetest) game engine as it handles most of that.

French and German ministers to meet Syria’s de facto leader

The foreign ministers of France and Germany are to meet Syria’s de facto leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, in Damascus in the highest-level visit by major western powers since rebels toppled the regime of President Bashar al-Assad last month.

Jean-Noël Barrot and Annalena Baerbock, who arrived separately in the Syrian capital on Friday, would hold talks with the head of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) on behalf of the EU, their ministries said.

67 Killed in Stampedes at Christmas Food Drives in Nigeria as IMF-Induced Hunger Engulfed Millions More in 2024

67 people, including 35 children and 22 women, were trampled to death in three separate stampedes that ensued in Nigeria as desperate crowds struggled to get their hands on a bag or two of groceries being distributed at Christmas charity events.

“Never before have there been so many people in Nigeria without food,” the UN World Food Program (WFP) stated in November 2024, noting that 25 million needed aid. UN agencies warned this number will increase in 2025 to 33 million, including 16 million children.

Meanwhile in the EU alone over 59 million tonnes of food are wasted each year.

What a gruesome world we live in.

Not to mention that we're also able to grow enough food to feed 70 Billion animals, not because we need to do that to survive but just because we think it tastes better
in reply to §ɦṛɛɗɗịɛ ßịⱺ𝔩ⱺɠịᵴŧ

There is no excuse for starvation to be happening with so many resources and knowledge at our disposal.

We should be ashamed of ourselves as a species.

Slut is Swedish for stop, but then the button labels are in English, so I'm confused
in reply to JackGreenEarth

As a non-Englisman, I'd say it's pretty normal for devices and house appliances to have physical text in English but software in another (local) language.
in reply to TaTTe

Yeah, especially stuff like "start/stop" or "on/off", that universal language by now.
in reply to JackGreenEarth

start is swedish for start and stopp is swedish for stop. leaving out a single p for i18n reasons does not really make the labels into a foreign language
in reply to lime!

In Danish, which the OG image is from, Stop is with only one P. Interestingly it is with two Ps in Norwegian as well.
in reply to Zelaf

yeah i just realized it can't be swedish because of the "o/min" text. i thought danish spelled it "slud" though. my biases are showing.
in reply to Dharma Curious (he/him)

it's developer-speak for "internationalization". i didn't want to type it all out on my phone. it's a very stupid abbreviation because it conveys no information.
in reply to lime!

To expand on this: It's common practice in IT/dev/devops to shorten things by first letter - number of letters in between - last letter

So you get things like i18n - internationalization, l10n - localization and k8s - kubernetes. Venture capitalists Andreessen and Horowitz also seem to think they're important enough that people should call them a16z. Which apparently some people do.

I think the best one is a11y (accessibility) because it looks like ally so it's easier to remember

Adding some context: it's because there are 18 abbreviated letters, hence i18n.

Fedora uBlue:main would not detect BenQ smartboard

I recently had to show a presentation at a client's location and they were using a Benq smartboard. I tried to connect to the monitor with my laptop running uBlue:main but while the monitor would detect that something has been plugged into it and switch to the HDMI input, my laptop refused to detect that it was connected to anything. Fortunately, I had backed up the presentation on an external drive so we connected my colleague's windows laptop and gave the presentation.

Now what I am curious about is why my laptop would not detect the smartboard as a video output. Do display outs have to be added to some kind whitelist? If I wanted to file a bug report for the same, where should the report be filed? In the kernel development, in the mesa project or somewhere else?

System specs :-

  • Ryzen 5 5600H + Radeon RX5500M
  • HDMI 2.1 port on the laptop
  • Fedora Silverblue - uBlue:main
  • Kernel version 6.11.10 (at the time)
  • Mesa version 24.2.x (don't exactly know which version was running at the time i think it was 24.2.8)

I use Bazzite on a laptop, and it is permanently attached to a TV as its primary video output. You should not have to do anything with whitelisting; video out should just work as expected, besides maybe needing to manually select the audio output.

My suspicion is that there's some kind of extra data being pushed over the HDMI, since the Smart Board is more than just a monitor (mouse data, smart pens, etc.). The video driver is probably shitting itself after the "monitor" detection. I don't know for certain, but that's my guess.

I would start by asking in the ublue Discord. There may be an easy fix, or they may direct you to the project where you should file a bug report.

Yeah I have similar suspicions. Maybe some non standard HDMI protocols or extensions are at play. After all it is a patented, closed source protocol. Standard monitors and TVs (smart or otherwise) connect without any issue.

Thanks for the advice. I will start with this.

I don't know if this is relevant but my BenQ monitor will only turn on for Bazzite when I disconnect all other HDMI connectors and its the only screen left.

The difference between the UK and Israel is that the UK actually knows how to conquer lands, and when to give up before having any losses whatsoever then requiring global funds from international idiots who supports genocide without any real benefits for a literal 100+ years now, only to continue killing generations after generations of human beings.

At this point it's safe to say that Israel is a literal psychopath that enjoys bloodshed and mayhem and is just advertising war for Land as an excuse to continue with this war while in fact they just enjoy the killing and massacres, and now trying to extinct a whole race of people from the Said land for the fun of it, there's literally no other reason for this war to last this long without any outcome or benefit.
