Meta is getting rid of factchecking. If you want to leave Instagram, what are your alternatives?
cross-posted from: leminal.space/post/14389410
“[For] people who live in the country or in remote areas or minority groups or [who have] small businesses, that is a really good way for them to communicate and reach other people,” she says.“It’s just not possible to set up an alternative at this point in time. So, to put it bluntly, we’re in a bit of deep shit, to be honest.”
No mention of Pixelfed, but I can understand why. Will it only be seen as an alternative once a critical mass of users move there? And can that happen if they don't see it as an alternative? Chicken and egg. I'm trying out, but it's a little vapid when everyone I know is on Instagram.
Meta is getting rid of factchecking. Should you leave Instagram – and what are the alternatives?
Meta’s decision relates to just the US so far, but it may affect users in Australia who follow a lot of US-based sourcesCatie McLeod (The Guardian)
The article title is somewhat misleading:
The company’s billionaire founder, Mark Zuckerberg, on Tuesday announced that the platforms’ factchecking program would be replaced with X-style “community notes”, a feature that allows users to add context to posts.
Twitter's Community Notes is whole lot better than nothing. In fact I'm not sure it's worse than the "factchecking" Facebook had.
Mexico counters Trump, suggests calling US 'Mexican America'
cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/24046998
SummaryMexican President Claudia Sheinbaum mocked Donald Trump’s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America" by suggesting the U.S. be renamed "Mexican America."
"It sounds nice, doesn’t it?" she said, pointing to a 17th-century map showing California, Texas, and Arizona once belonging to Mexico before the Mexican-American War (1846–1848). She also noted the Gulf of Mexico has had its name since 1607.
Sheinbaum warned new U.S. tariffs would prompt reciprocal measures.
While advocating for cooperation, she emphasized Mexico’s sovereignty and its historical ties with the U.S.

the kind of hell we put this kid and this mother (and her family) through will come back to bite us in the ass and an overwhelming majority will have no idea why it happened. i hate how we're so easy to distract and propagandize that we can literally now watch the horror we visit upon these people in real time but still only regard it as nothing more than a "single issue" when voting on election day.
i suppose; in a round about way; you could see trump's victory was karma leveling the scales to give us a slow smolder while the palestinians get it hot & fast; and all of it needlessly so, simply for the sake of profit.

Which... is "funny" because even though it is a genuine arm race where 2 powerful nations are competing... it's a pointless one.
Sure, we do get slightly better STT, TTS, some "generation" of "stuff", as in human sounding text use for spam and scam, images and now videos without attribution, but the actual hard stuff? Not a lot of real change there.
Anyway, interesting to see how the chips war unfold. For now despite the grand claim though from both :
- US with software and models for AI (Claude, OpenAI, etc driven by VC backed funding looking for THE next big thing, which does NOT materialize) ) and hardware, mostly NVIDIA (so happy to sell shovels for the current gold rush) or
- China with "cheap" to train large models (DeepSeek) and hardware (SMIC, RISC based chips) to "catch-up" without any large production batch with any comparable yield
neither have produced anything genuinely positive IMHO.

Argh chives
I am currently finding that out, too. 🙃
So far, I've had them in a vegetable curry and in a sort-of-East-Asian style dish (rice, chickpeas, teriyaki, sriracha, peanut sauce) and I threw them onto a toast where I had a tomato-hummus spread on there.
I feel like that generally works quite well, if your base food is already quite rich in either veggies or spices, then you can just throw chives into the mix without it poking out too much. Lots of those dishes might use leek anyways, and chives aren't too different from that.
White people are undeniably racist.
But I believe the First-Second-Third World distinctions were originally politically based on whether a country was aligned with Western Capitalism-Soviet Union- or non-aligned, respectively. Definitely racist elements involved in condemning/couping USSR and the non-aligned countries though.
I think people generally now mean to say Global South when they say that, which is more racially charged but also ultimately political-economic.
Israeli Officer Shoots Palestinian Man Serving as Human Shield in Rafah During IDF Operation
An IDF officer has mistakenly shot dead a Palestinian man who was serving as a human shield for the Nahal brigades 931st Battalion in Gaza.
The man was allowed to reside alongside the troops and was tasked with searching buildings and tunnels before the troops entered. This incident raises further allegations of IDF brutality in Gaza. The IDF has admitted the incident and stated that an investigation is underway.

It would be the terminal that does this, not a generic solution. I didn't know if any specifically that does this though.
