A Hung Jury in the Latest Just Stop Oil Trial Shows the Nonsense of these Prosecutions
Just Stop Oil trial ends in a hung jury, with judge rescheduling
Two Just Stop Oil Supporters who sprayed Heathrow departure boards with orange paint have won a temporary reprieveThe Canary
They say ‘I do what I like without thinking about the law’. I don’t think following the law and doing the right thing are always the same thing.
And you are correct. But when you make the choice to break the law based on what is right. You also make the choice to suffer the consequences. As law is made by society. Not right or wrong.
If you believe, your actions are correct and society wrong. Then you are choosing to sacrifice to fight that battle.
And just like, a person killing a paedophile may be seen by all as right. It is still a crime of murder. Just like destroying property to make your point is still criminal damage, no matter your point. Your willingness to commit the crime is pretty worthless. If you are not also willing to suffer the punishment.
The law says I must kill anyone 2 shades of white below mine.
My willingness to disobey the law is absolutely not worthless, but morally imperative.
Let's modify the argument slightly to say I must allow corporations to kill millions.
...
The law says I must kill anyone 2 shades of white below mine.
Ever wonder why laws like that don't exist.
The closest we got is prejudicial reporting laws. Germany in WW2.
But a less racist example/ Draft during the same war. Draft is the only time it has been a crime to refuse to kill. And at the time, society truly believed you had an obligation to kill for your nation. Pacifism was just seen as another word for coward.
Many people suffered prison and other punishment. For refusing to fight during the second world war. If those people were not willing to risk prison. They would have been ignored. But because many were willing to go to prison. And be forced to work mines rather than fight and kill. (PS, My grandfather brother died in those mines.)
Mining at that time was generally more dangerous than joining the soldiers. And according to my grandfather, he knew the risk when he refused to fight. For context ill add my grandfather was an engineer for smiths. So was in a protected profession. He made instrumentation for spitfires. I raise all this just to point out the discussions I had with him. As he considers himself to have grown from his brother's experience. He was angry that he was not able to fight during the beginning of the war. As was the case for many young men in protected professions in the first years. Learning of his brother, experience and death in forced labour. Made him realise and respect the sacrifice he and other pacifists made.
Other options were presented late in the war. Plus more recently. Remember the recent election. And the Tories trying to reintroduce national service. If no event like pacifists going to jail during WW2 had happened. Then the Tories would not have bothered to offer so many non-military options.
We as a society now respect the concept of pacifism because people took risk to fight for the rights not to kill. Same with mmost other modern ideals.
Women's right to vote was won by the women willing to be jailed and beaten by police. Not the people running church coffee mornings.
But when you make the choice to break the law based on what is right. You also make the choice to suffer the consequences.
No, they don't choose to suffer the consequences, they choose to possibly suffer the consequences. The distinction is important.
There are mechanisms to stop unjust applications of the law, such as jury nullification. That they weren't able to reach a conviction here is the system kind of working.

When you are doing something for publicity.
Possibly suffer
It is at the least probably suffer.
If you are intentionally damaging property while looking for publicity. And do not expect to face legal consequences. You are seriously failing to learn from history.
In this case. The jury was specifically ordered to ignore her motive for the actions. That was what prompted the response I quoted. And this is the case in the vaste majority of crimes.
Her argument was that climate change is not a belief but a fact. Unfortunately, that is not what the court claimed. The belief they ordered them to ignore was not climate change. But her claim that her committing a crime was excusable due to the need to draw attention to it.
You may claim she expected jury nullification. And heck, she almost got it. But that in itself is what I mean by history. Jury nullification is so rare in the UK as to be almost non-existence. To expect it from property damage. Where the evidence is public and obvious is not realistic. It is a theoretical principle of over legal system. Not a defined expectation.
Comparison If you speed on the motorway. You may believe it is possible you will get a ticket. But when you do it past a speed camera that flashes. You are not being honest unless you tell the wife it's probable or pretty darn certain.
EDIT: unless you can claim someone was chasing you with a gun. Saving life has historically been an excuse for crime. But only in very direct situations.
Interesting to consider. If she filled aircraft fuel tanks with sugar. Or the jet engine equiv. Her climate change argument might be considered an excuse. As her belief that damaging the aircraft could stop the harm would be relevant.
Unlike damaging electronic signs, painting or historical documents.
Their goal isn't publicity, that's ancillary to their actual goal. Hmm what could their actual goal be... oh right: Just Stop Oil
I'm fairly certain that these JSO protesters are fully aware that they'll probably face consequences. They might hope for jury nullification, but I doubt they'd expect it.
The judge can order the jury as they please, but the jury does not need to justify their decisions. This is exactly what jury nullification is.
The jury is the conscience of society, and their job is not only to decide whether the defendant did the acts charged, but whether they should be condemned and punished for it. The jury protects us from immoral or socially undesirable results.
Saving life has historically been an excuse for crime. But only in very direct situations.
As society has failed to properly act to avert disastrous outcomes, the threat continues to become more and more direct.
Unlike damaging electronic signs, painting or historical documents.
Won't someone think of the lost profits, and museum glass that has to be cleaned. The wealth of billionaires is certainly more important than billions of people dying.
How have existing Pixelfed servers handled the increased load?
Pixelfed is seeing a surge in popularity. Anyone that's currently running one, have you run into any roadbumps, or have things gone smoothly? pixelfed.social has had scaling issues, but maybe it's easier if you're just federating to that instance instead of handling the load from user logins?

Fediverse Tumblr equivalents
Tumblr always suited me better than micro-blogging as there is no word count restriction (I can find brevity a problem) and you could have any number of blogs/channels for whatever topic was tickling your fancy at the time.
So I've been keeping an eye out for Fediverse alternatives, jotting down notes and now I'd like throw this open to the Hivemind. ~~And yes, Tumblr is now on ActivityPub, but I am not putting my time into corporate platforms again.~~ edit: oh no it isn't, that was the plan (as if December 2023) but there's been no updates since Tumblr moved to WordPress.
Added bonuses: markdown (or something similar), adding links to posts, quoting other posts and perhaps being able to login from another Fediverse service.
Here's a few I found:
- Goblin - It's a FireFish fork from a former Tumblr employee. Allows multiple accounts but they have to have a different email address, some markdown but not links. I've heard it suggested that most *key forks could be set-up as a Tumblr alternative
- Loforo: "Another surprise is that Loforo is the second most active ActivityPub blog platform in the Fediverse, behind only WordPress." Easy multiple blog creation, formatting in HTML. Unfortunately you can't create your own instance, last time I checked.
- micro.blog - not free, not open source
- Wafrn
Not listed as Tumblr equivalents but some of the general services are flexible enough to do this:
- Hubzilla - has channels but seems more a CMS. Nomadic identities is a great feature.
- Friendica - the BlueSky integration seems increasingly important and, with Meta's enshittification, it feels like a general social media service is a good idea. The way you can have the equivalent of Google+'s circles seems a good feature (while I am no fan of Facebook, Google+ worked well for me while it lasted). The main issue I see is you can only replicate channels with different accounts.

How about misskey? It has character limit, but still you can write a lot (2000 character limit). There are also channels.

That's good to hear. I have a test account on a *key fork and the Antennas are a great feature.
The naming of things is so tricky when comparing different services. I stumbled across one Friendica request to rename "forums" to "groups" and "groups" to "circles".

Yeah, that was my understanding - Hubzilla has that feature working as I'd like it but there's a way to make it work in Friendica.

Thanks for digging that out, it being in German might explain why I didn't find it.
That all sounds ideal and working through Bluesky's API. I now wonder why we need bridges if that works so well.

Tumblr is now on ActivityPub
Is it? I know it's been moved to Wordpress, but I haven't heard about this.
Ghost can apparently be used to manage multiple blogs under different subdomains. Might be worth looking into when their ActivityPub supports goes out of early access.
How can I use one single ghost instance to support multiple blogs at the same time ?
Ghost is one of the best blogging platform I have encountered recently. I have a query on something i don’t know how to achieve. Suppose I have a domain / website https://www.mywebsite.Ghost Forum
Is it? I know it’s been moved to Wordpress, but I haven’t heard about this.
Good point. Last updates were they were still working on it in December 2023 but the move to WP seems to have either derailed the efforts or forced it to switch tracks.

I'm seeing Ghost as a Substack killer, as that is a toxic swamp we need sensible folk off. Nearly everyone who had a newsletter migrated there. Only one listened to their fans and backed straight out again.

I always thought a newsletter was just a specialised blog, but maybe that's wrong. I heard about the Substack allowing Nazis on there, so understandable why people would want off.
Is there a Fediverse equivalent to Audius Music or Gala Music? If not, should we consider potentially creating one?*
What Are Audius Music and Gala Music?
Audius Music
[https://audius.co/]
is a decentralized music streaming platform built on blockchain technology.
It serves as a music-sharing and discovery platform where artists can upload their music directly, bypassing traditional record labels or streaming services.
With a focus on giving artists more control over their content and revenues, Audius employs blockchain to provide transparency and allows fans to directly support artists via tokens or other forms of cryptocurrency.
It's a hub for independent musicians who want to distribute and monetize their work without middlemen.
Gala Music [https://music.gala.com/]
operates similarly but is part of the Gala Games ecosystem, which utilizes blockchain technology for play-to-earn gaming and entertainment experiences.
Gala Music's goal is to empower artists by decentralizing music ownership and letting fans own Music Nodes.
These nodes help distribute content and reward both the fans and the artists.
Gala Music also integrates its NFTs into the ecosystem, giving fans a unique way to support creators and artists to tokenize their music.
Why Bring This to the Fediverse?
The Fediverse thrives on decentralization and user empowerment—both principles align perfectly with the core concepts behind Audius and Gala Music.
A Fediverse-powered music platform could provide a truly decentralized space for artists and fans to collaborate, share, and monetize music without relying on corporate gatekeepers or proprietary ecosystems.
Imagine a service where:
- Artists can self-host their music or distribute it via interconnected, federated services.
- Music discovery is driven by community interaction rather than opaque algorithms.
- Fans can support their favorite artists directly via tips, donations, or open-source cryptocurrencies.
- The entire platform upholds the values of transparency, user ownership, and privacy.
If a Fediverse equivalent to Audius Music or Gala Music doesn’t already exist, could this be a signal for innovation within the community?
Platforms like Funkwhale already offer some audio-sharing capabilities but focus more on community-driven music libraries rather than artist monetization or blockchain integration.
Could we build upon existing tools like Funkwhale or create something entirely new?
I would consider doing something like this, but, unfortunately, I lack both the knowledge, energy, and time.
What do you think?
Would you be interested in contributing to, or supporting, such an initiative?

RedNote Gains Traffic Ahead Of TikTok Ban — But Sparks Consent And Control Concerns
Millions are turning to RedNote, a Chinese social media app, as its resemblance to TikTok appeals to users. But dig a little deeper, and the reality becomes far more insidious.Jason Snyder (Forbes)
I find it hilarious that the comment replies on this forbes.com article, are way farther left and more aware of the US's hypocrisies than the average liberal lemmy server commenters.
The article was also just the standard orientalist "our open transparent freedom-loving democracy" vs "their authoritarian 1984 surveillance regime", with an emphasis on "protecting our youths from the evil commies". Not a shred of self reflection after the US just committed the thing they're accusing China of doing.

I have been using the Friendica.world instance and I like the old look, it makes me feel like I'm back in 2007 though the platform is highly customizable. Friendica itself takes a little getting used as the like and dislike buttons can get stuck and the infinite scroll is disabled by default. The local tab is set to your instance and the global tab shows posts from other platforms such as Mastodon or Flipboard. I haven't tried the Bluesky connection myself yet. So overall I would rate my experience good!
I have checked out the Hubzilla instances but the events seemed a bit limited.
Kind of the same as with all federated services. I'm faced by a list of 80 or so servers (the majority of which are tagged 'Outdated version') and insufficient information to help me know which makes sense for me to join.
So my interest kind of petered out. Maybe I'll have another look in a few months.

I think at some point, a lot of the Fedi will realise that toxicity and hopefully we’ll see fork efforts like Pixelfed-glitch get more support. Because Pixelfed and Loops are good ideas, executed by someone who really doesn’t have the ability to properly execute on them. I don’t anticipate that these current user numbers will stay given the current, quite broken, state of Pixelfed.

For now, it's really hard to find pixelfed users on other servers because they get drowned out by all the Mastodon traffic.

If I made an account, I'd sort by "active users" and select one of the top 5.
Fediverse Observer checks all servers in the fediverse and gives you an easy way to find a home.

If someone would have told me this like a couple of years back, back when most people (besides the foss community) didn’t know about it, I deffo wouldn’t have believed you lol.
It’s nice to see some alternatives getting promoted though.
It just depends on how you want to use your account. I can see wanting to follow PeerTube or Loops accounts from Pixelfed. I follow a few Mastodon users who just post photos.
~~The default behaviour is to only show content with attached media but you can change that in settings too. So you can use it as a microblogging service if you just like the look and feel of Pixelfed.~~
Edit: striking out the falseness
I never tried PixelFed and just signed up to pixel.tchncs.de. As a client I downloaded Pixelix from F-Droid. Now I'm there with an empty feed. How do I get started?
There's a section with trending profiles and one with trending hashtags but both sections seem to have pretty generic content like #art, #photography, #photos etc.
Don't get me wrong, it's nice photographies and all but it feels really anonymous and a bit random to me. Is this the normal PixelFed experience or am I doing it wrong?
No it was real

Hello text-only posts! You can now see text-only posts in your home timeline from accounts you follow. #pixelfed #activityPub
And then removed at some point, I guess.
Thanks for that deep dive! Glad to not be hallucinating.

Does it show Lemmy posts tho? It doesn't seem to... Also it looks like it only shows image posts from Mastodon... (not criticizing it, just noting.)
It’s hard to say, but I’m not anticipating anything myself. Dude seems to be more interested in making flashy branded announcements than developing the thing to a working state.
What I will say is, he’s has for the last several years just under 400 Patreon backers (one of which was me), which was intended to give him funding to bring Pixelfed to a state of relative completion.
In that time he effectively abandoned Pixelfed to work on Loops (which is also in a really rough state and I anticipate will be similarly abandoned for Sup once he runs out of things to ‘announce’ for it), and now that Pixelfed has suddenly gotten this wave of attention, he’s talking about launching a Kickstarter to actually do the thing this time.
He has also been privately very hostile to groups such as the devs of Pixelfed-glitch, which were formed to continue development of Pixelfed, all while publicly stating that he is embracing it with open arms and sharing the development with that team.
He also responds to criticisms of these behaviours with posts like the ones I’ve attached here.
Source: Have been a Pixelfed instance admin for about five years, know several of the pf-glitch devs (who are all mostly server admins), and have been fairly active in the GitHub issues.
