I raise all this just to point out the discussions I had with him. As he considers himself to have grown from his brother's experience. He was angry that he was not able to fight during the beginning of the war. As was the case for many young men in protected professions in the first years. Learning of his brother, experience and death in forced labour. Made him realise and respect the sacrifice he and other pacifists made.
Other options were presented late in the war. Plus more recently. Remember the recent election. And the Tories trying to reintroduce national service. If no event like pacifists going to jail during WW2 had happened. Then the Tories would not have bothered to offer so many non-military options.
We as a society now respect the concept of pacifism because people took risk to fight for the rights not to kill. Same with mmost other modern ideals.
Women's right to vote was won by the women willing to be jailed and beaten by police. Not the people running church coffee mornings.

i'm curious, too. the vague idea i got was that the app just launched, people are pissed at meta, and the word pixelfed was banned on a site, causing a Streisand effect. i could just be spreading rumors, though.
Some instances like pixelfed.art have manual sign-up confirmation so I guess that doesn’t scale particularly well. On the other hand it prevents sudden spikes in active users. 😀 The sign-up queue was 8000 there the other day.
I joined .social and opened my account / profile. I can scroll the feed and see posts but every time i try and post the app hangs for a few minutes then crashes. I had assumed it was a load thing but it's been nearly 48hrs now.
Same, a bit sad experience with login failures because the authentication process timeout. And slow refresh, hanging when scrolling... I am considering leaving social to go another instance. The point is like on Mastodon : if you are not on the main instance you will miss content, by design you get that split view of federated instances... It's anoying.

The way you can have the equivalent of Google+'s circles seems a good feature (while I am no fan of Facebook, Google+ worked well for me while it lasted). The main issue I see is you can only replicate channels with different accounts.

Most non-Mastodon "microblogging" software handles longer messages just fine. My Akkoma instance for example defaults to 5000 letters and there isn't really a limit interface wise.
I hate the fact that those posts are not an Article in the #activitypub object. I wouldn't be surprised if most of them do that because of Mastodon utterly inability to render other #activitypub objects other than a Note.

I find it hilarious that the comment replies on this forbes.com article, are way farther left and more aware of the US's hypocrisies than the average liberal lemmy server commenters.
The article was also just the standard orientalist "our open transparent freedom-loving democracy" vs "their authoritarian 1984 surveillance regime", with an emphasis on "protecting our youths from the evil commies". Not a shred of self reflection after the US just committed the thing they're accusing China of doing.
I have been using the Friendica.world instance and I like the old look, it makes me feel like I'm back in 2007 though the platform is highly customizable. Friendica itself takes a little getting used as the like and dislike buttons can get stuck and the infinite scroll is disabled by default. The local tab is set to your instance and the global tab shows posts from other platforms such as Mastodon or Flipboard. I haven't tried the Bluesky connection myself yet. So overall I would rate my experience good!
I have checked out the Hubzilla instances but the events seemed a bit limited.
Kind of the same as with all federated services. I'm faced by a list of 80 or so servers (the majority of which are tagged 'Outdated version') and insufficient information to help me know which makes sense for me to join.
So my interest kind of petered out. Maybe I'll have another look in a few months.
Yeah unfortunately there are only third party apps for Sailfish and Android. The more people that join the more likely someone will take the time to build one.
Why not? It did a really bad job of marketing itself, and then I didn't see it get mentioned again for almost a decade - when Lemmy gained traction and started talking about other federated/federated style platforms.

Pixelfed still has to fix really basic stuff first. Like pulling changed profile pics from remote instances, federating properly and consistently, not having three different UIs from different stages of development at once, making sure settings do what they’re supposed to do…
Sad the dude behind it is kind of a Jerk. Was bullying a kid on Mastodon just a few weeks back and he got a bunch of backlash for it. Dude also got a bit of a Messiah complex, had to unfollow him 🥴
Please let’s not start the personal attacks on the developers. Lemmy was a shit storm of that and it really sucked when I joined. Take the gift of the software and move on.
Yup. Been following Dan for a while and this has only gotten worse. Problem is, his attitude absolutely informs the way he manages and handles his projects. Even one glance at the issues page for Pixelfed shows that.
I think at some point, a lot of the Fedi will realise that toxicity and hopefully we’ll see fork efforts like Pixelfed-glitch get more support. Because Pixelfed and Loops are good ideas, executed by someone who really doesn’t have the ability to properly execute on them. I don’t anticipate that these current user numbers will stay given the current, quite broken, state of Pixelfed.

Can it cross federate? Or at least within pixel fed, how easy is it for instances to federate? I've found that mastodon requires at least one person from a different instance following you before your stuff federates there
Instagram was an inherently flawed platform. It was supposed to be for people to share artistic photos and portfolios but it was obviously abused for attention. People just post photos of text. This is the same. Limiting a platform to any specific type of media is dumb.
Most posts on my instance's local feed right now are from new accounts and 99% of them are photography and art. I saw one guy doing a typical poser selfie and just blocked him. It's looking good.
I encourage people to report any spam that does get posted though. Need to keep Pixelfed nice.
That's on your local feed. Presumably you joined the fediverse to federate with other instances. And since PixelFed federates with all sorts of other platforms, and refuses to be Pixelfed-only, inevitably a large number of those photos are not even intended to be artistic but informational. Not to mention the inevitable future of a platform that becomes even remotely popular.
I have no problem with that - on Pixelfed I can choose what to see. I agree though it would be a cool bonus to have a fourth option to see all Pixelfed posts.
There isn't, unfortunately. Global shows you all of the Fediverse, not just Pixelfed. A global pixelfed feed was a planned feature at one point but I'm not sure of its status.
For now, it's really hard to find pixelfed users on other servers because they get drowned out by all the Mastodon traffic.
That number has to be low. There's been nearly 200k new signups in the last few days. Pixelfed's blowing up right now. The local feed on p.s is a never-ending stream of first posts.
Only insofar as the instance stays online. Pixel Fed is compatible with multiple other platforms such as Mastodon, Missley, Sharkey, and Fire fish. So the global feed on Pixel Fed shows you photo posts from users of all federated instances of those other platforms, too. And they can all see posts from federated Pixelfed instances.
If someone would have told me this like a couple of years back, back when most people (besides the foss community) didn’t know about it, I deffo wouldn’t have believed you lol.
It’s nice to see some alternatives getting promoted though.
It just depends on how you want to use your account. I can see wanting to follow PeerTube or Loops accounts from Pixelfed. I follow a few Mastodon users who just post photos.

I never tried PixelFed and just signed up to pixel.tchncs.de. As a client I downloaded Pixelix from F-Droid. Now I'm there with an empty feed. How do I get started?
There's a section with trending profiles and one with trending hashtags but both sections seem to have pretty generic content like #art, #photography, #photos etc.
Don't get me wrong, it's nice photographies and all but it feels really anonymous and a bit random to me. Is this the normal PixelFed experience or am I doing it wrong?
I found a global stream that is a bit similar to /all and has a wider variety of content, also new posts with just little interaction so far. That feels already slightly better than the top trends.
Scroll the local feed. Search hashtags and follow hashtags you're interested in. As with Mastodon, your home feed will be empty until you follow people.
I'm not sure. I don't think I've ever seen a Lemmy post there, though I haven't spent a ton of time on that TL. It might be different because all Lemmy posts are posted to groups which aren't supported by Pixelfed yet. That's just a guess though.
Yeah I don't think pixelfed global supports Lemmy -- I've seen a couple image posts on Lemmy in the past 10 minutes that didn't show up on pixelfed global. So I guess they miss out on our memes and shitposts lel.

What I will say is, he’s has for the last several years just under 400 Patreon backers (one of which was me), which was intended to give him funding to bring Pixelfed to a state of relative completion.
In that time he effectively abandoned Pixelfed to work on Loops (which is also in a really rough state and I anticipate will be similarly abandoned for Sup once he runs out of things to ‘announce’ for it), and now that Pixelfed has suddenly gotten this wave of attention, he’s talking about launching a Kickstarter to actually do the thing this time.
He has also been privately very hostile to groups such as the devs of Pixelfed-glitch, which were formed to continue development of Pixelfed, all while publicly stating that he is embracing it with open arms and sharing the development with that team.
He also responds to criticisms of these behaviours wit

I made an account but I don't really see the appeal. It just feels like a bunch of random photos at the moment. Nothing I really feel like following, as it will just be more random photos.
