Locked in alien vs Frank Horrigan

in reply to Garibaldee

Feel like I read this headline 50 times in the last year

in reply to Garibaldee

Richard Nixon, expanded the program in response to what he called the “wild orgasm of anarchists sweeping across the country like a prairie fire.”

I was born late and I missed the hot countrywide, wild anarcho-orgy.

Biden’s TikTok Flip-Flop: President Rushes To Undo Ban He Championed As Backlash Grows

in reply to Psychodelic

did you miss the new story a couple of weeks ago about a mentally diminished biden letting his surrogates handle everything on his behalf?
in reply to eldavi

Sure but what's their excuse? Is everyone simply a huge Meta investor? That'd be my best guess for how multiple people try to achieve something like this without looking at the consequences - personal gain. But I'm still inclined to believe these politicians/surrogates want to do a decent job and/or get re-elected

Panels are the wrong way around. Peter’s glasses obscured his vision in this scene.
in reply to Scratch

For a similar "The glasses reveal the real image" format that contextually fits the general way people use this one, there's a similar two image set from the film "They Live" that people sometimes use.

A Hung Jury in the Latest Just Stop Oil Trial Shows the Nonsense of these Prosecutions

Two Just Stop Oil supporters who sprayed Heathrow departure boards with orange paint during the Oil Kills, international uprising to end fossil fuels last July have won a temporary reprieve as their jury failed to reach a majority decision.

They say ‘I do what I like without thinking about the law’. I don’t think following the law and doing the right thing are always the same thing.

And you are correct. But when you make the choice to break the law based on what is right. You also make the choice to suffer the consequences. As law is made by society. Not right or wrong.

If you believe, your actions are correct and society wrong. Then you are choosing to sacrifice to fight that battle.

And just like, a person killing a paedophile may be seen by all as right. It is still a crime of murder. Just like destroying property to make your point is still criminal damage, no matter your point. Your willingness to commit the crime is pretty worthless. If you are not also willing to suffer the punishment.

in reply to HumanPenguin

The law says I must kill anyone 2 shades of white below mine.

My willingness to disobey the law is absolutely not worthless, but morally imperative.

Let's modify the argument slightly to say I must allow corporations to kill millions.

No, they don't choose to suffer the consequences, they choose to possibly suffer the consequences. The distinction is important.

There are mechanisms to stop unjust applications of the law, such as jury nullification. That they weren't able to reach a conviction here is the system kind of working.

How have existing Pixelfed servers handled the increased load?

in reply to m_‮f

Some instances like pixelfed.art have manual sign-up confirmation so I guess that doesn’t scale particularly well. On the other hand it prevents sudden spikes in active users. 😀
The sign-up queue was 8000 there the other day.

I joined .social and opened my account / profile. I can scroll the feed and see posts but every time i try and post the app hangs for a few minutes then crashes. I had assumed it was a load thing but it's been nearly 48hrs now.
in reply to Dogs_cant_look_up

Same, a bit sad experience with login failures because the authentication process timeout. And slow refresh, hanging when scrolling...
I am considering leaving social to go another instance.
The point is like on Mastodon : if you are not on the main instance you will miss content, by design you get that split view of federated instances... It's anoying.

Fediverse Tumblr equivalents

Tumblr is now on ActivityPub

Is it? I know it's been moved to Wordpress, but I haven't heard about this.

Ghost can apparently be used to manage multiple blogs under different subdomains. Might be worth looking into when their ActivityPub supports goes out of early access.

Good point. Last updates were they were still working on it in December 2023 but the move to WP seems to have either derailed the efforts or forced it to switch tracks.

Ghost can apparently be used to manage multiple blogs under different subdomains. Might be worth looking into when their ActivityPub supports goes out of early access.

I'm seeing Ghost as a Substack killer, as that is a toxic swamp we need sensible folk off. Nearly everyone who had a newsletter migrated there. Only one listened to their fans and backed straight out again.

I always thought a newsletter was just a specialised blog, but maybe that's wrong. I heard about the Substack allowing Nazis on there, so understandable why people would want off.

Is there a Fediverse equivalent to Audius Music or Gala Music? If not, should we consider potentially creating one?*

in reply to Teknevra

Just remove crypo and it will be perfect
in reply to Teknevra

I didn’t know if this, but now I know and I’m already using Gala Music 😁 thank you for the tip

In functional programming, everything is an expression (of frustration).
in reply to ImplyingImplications

Having worked for nearly two decades in a functional language now, that's precisely how I feel about the imperative style.

Forbes is already losing their shit over people using 小红书 and the comments on the article amazing

libs wouldn't know anything about self censorship I'm sure 😂

and not the redrawing of boundaries of acceptable thought

in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

I find it hilarious that the comment replies on this forbes.com article, are way farther left and more aware of the US's hypocrisies than the average liberal lemmy server commenters.

The article was also just the standard orientalist "our open transparent freedom-loving democracy" vs "their authoritarian 1984 surveillance regime", with an emphasis on "protecting our youths from the evil commies". Not a shred of self reflection after the US just committed the thing they're accusing China of doing.

HRW: UK failure to revoke anti-protest laws 'seriously undermines' democratic rights

Pixelfed now has the second highest fediverse mau at 92.1k

This might be the one to dethrone Mastodon in user count and monthly active user metrics.
in reply to Sunshine (she/her)

Yeah, pixelfed is definetly the most normie friendly. Even my friend was able to make an account.
in reply to Sunshine (she/her)

I made an account but I don't really see the appeal. It just feels like a bunch of random photos at the moment. Nothing I really feel like following, as it will just be more random photos.
