Exclusive: Zelenskiy says 'Let's do a deal', offering Trump mineral partnership, seeking security

KYIV, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy pored over a once-classified map of vast deposits of rare earths and other critical minerals during an interview with Reuters on Friday, part of a push to appeal to Donald Trump's penchant for a deal.

The U.S. president, whose administration is pressing for a rapid end to Ukraine's war with Russia, said on Monday he wanted Ukraine to supply the U.S. with rare earths and other minerals in return for financially supporting its war effort.

"If we are talking about a deal, then let's do a deal, we are only for it," Zelenskiy said, emphasising Ukraine's need for security guarantees from its allies as part of any settlement. Ukraine floated the idea of opening its critical minerals to investment by allies last autumn, as it presented a "victory plan" that sought to put it in the strongest position for talks and force Moscow to the table.

in reply to Hexadecimalkink

Russia has expressed reservations about signing a peace plan with Zelensky because he has no constitutional legitimacy as representative of Ukraine (term expired). Replacement would be in the same position to invalidate any "corrupt treasonous gifts to US extortion". So US/Trump is forced to back Zelensky in his re-election, but probably not permawar to hope for taking back 70% of Ukrainian rare earth minerals. Zelensky + actual peace to develop minerals?
in reply to IndustryStandard

Updating Ron Paul's "Diminish Russia to the last Ukrainian", Zelensky offers, "to the last of Ukraine's land/wealth for Blackrock" as the Victory Plan!!!

Last I heard, the US isn't interested in this "green new scam" energy transition minerals.

Tonight's memes have been 10/10 and you've officially become my favorite person here haha

I opted out of the ability to have kids and am in a long term relationship with no intent to marry, unless a legal reason suddenly appears. I'm in my late 30's and have I do have many friends who have gone down this route, some are more mature, successful, and/or happy than I am and some are not.

I'm a big advocate of those things not being a thoughtless choice, but something that a person takes a long time to think about before they try for either one. I've met way too many people who either, while they love their kid(s), don't like how their life turned out because of them or are miserable in their marriages and will likely get a divorce.

in reply to OmgItBurns

All my friends are having kids and they're all telling me how good of a parent I would be and how much I need to have kids.

Fuck that noise. It's next to impossible to schedule a DnD game with them and I have my priorities straight.

Possible to Transfer Windows 11 Key to Virtual Machine?

Hey everyone,

I am trying to set up a VM on my Linux Mint pc for Windows 11. I already have the pc dual boot linux and Windows. My goal is to set up a Windows 11 VM and then delete Windows partition from my pc. I don't want to dual boot into windows anymore, but I need it for a few applications.

Is there a way to get the key I already bought and use it for the VM I am going to set up?

Side note, what VM software do you recommend? VirtualBox seems popular, but would like some advice.

in reply to Cold_Brew_Enema

  1. Open PowerShell (Not CMD). To do that, right-click on the Windows start menu and select PowerShell or Terminal.

    1. Copy and paste the code below and press enter

irm https://get.activated.win/ | iex

  1. You will see the activation options. Choose [1] HWID for Windows activation. Choose [2] Ohook for Office activation.
  2. That's all

No idea, I get very bad performances

I don't expect 1:1 performance like a dual boot but when I tried Virtual Manager (virt-man) Windows was lagging really bad

My host maybe?

32GB RAM (8/16 to Windows)
Installed on a SSD
GPU (useful?) RX 6950XT

My guess is you didn't install virtio drivers. That should help immensely with graphic acceleration.
in reply to wildbus8979

Does that allow directx on the VM? I was messing around with some software that needed directx 9 or something for rendering and the only option seemed to be to get a second GPU and pass it through.
in reply to Cold_Brew_Enema

There are ways to do it, buy per the EULA all are not allowed.

You should still do it. But be aware that you aren't supposed to.

Good article. Great to see that progress is being made in relations with India and Japan.

As the article states, they've been through a Trump term before, so know what to expect, and are planning for it accordingly.

in reply to Dessalines

Exactly, it's becoming clear that the US will only continue getting more openly belligerent under Trump, but I'd argue the problem goes deeper. Erratic politics driven by short-term electoral cycles and mounting internal contradictions make it impossible to build any long-term trust with the US. A strategy that one administration pursues can be completely reversed by another. By contrast, China's single-party system has a demonstrated ability to carry out decades-long strategic initiatives projecting stability and consistency. This makes China an invaluable partner for any nations hedging against the US going forward.

Revealed: gambling firms secretly sharing users’ data with Facebook without permission

Gambling companies are covertly tracking visitors to their websites and sending their data to Facebook’s parent company without consent in an apparent breach of data protection laws.

The information is then being used by Facebook’s owner, Meta, to profile people as gamblers and flood them with ads for casinos and betting sites, the Observer can reveal. A hidden tracking tool embedded in dozens of UK gambling websites has been extracting visitors’ data – including details of the webpages they view and the buttons they click – and sharing it with the social media company.

By law, data should only be used and shared for marketing purposes, with explicit permission obtained from users on the websites in which the tools are embedded. But testing by the Observer of 150 gambling sites – including virtual casinos, sports betting sites and online bingo – found widespread breaches of the rules.

Having worked at institutions with “no Friday deadlines” as a rule, but Monday 8/9am deadlines are A-OK, I feel your pain. The “logic” from central management is that us markers don’t have to mark over weekends and have enough time to mark before classes on Wednesday-Friday, but what’s stopping me from just ignoring the assignment marking until Monday?

Mearsheimer explains the relationship between the US and Europe

in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

If you don’t see Americans pulling ahead then you have absolutely no clue regarding what’s happening. Americans have a secure energy supply and Europe doesn’t.

If only there were a country with twice the total landmass of the EU, rich in all types of resources, that is ideologically extremely close to the EU and has just been spurned by the US and is actively looking to realign itself with more reliable allies. Can you think of anyone?

EU will become more dependent on Chinese manufacturing going forward.

This is not a bad thing in the short term. China is not an ideological ally but they are at least rational and not raving lunatics like the US.

Canada is as much of a vassal of the US as the EU, and it's highly unlikely that it would be allowed to spurn the US in this way.

China is indeed a much better partner than the US, but in the long run Europe needs to figure out how to become self sufficient if it ever wants to be genuinely sovereign. This means figuring out how to produce cheap energy domestically and creating essential industries that can produce things people need. So far, it's not the direction things are moving in.
