Great Barrier Reef Hit by Major Coral Bleaching Event

The Reef Snapshot: Summer 2024–25 (pdf), published today by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, states:

Results of aerial surveys and in-water monitoring to date suggest the Reef has experienced widespread coral bleaching across the Far Northern and Northern regions of the Marine Park — mostly a result of prolonged exposure to higher-than-average water temperatures.

This event is the sixth since 2016 and, while less extensive than the coral bleaching event in 2023–24, it is the second time the Reef has experienced widespread bleaching events across consecutive summers.

Officially, Australia's international treasure suffered mass coral bleaching in 1998, 2002, 2016, 2017, 2020, 2022 and 2024.

Iran sells Russia drones and missiles to kill Ukrainians and Trump doesn’t care

in reply to MicroWave

Oh no Evil Iran sell weapons to Russian war criminal do something USA and EU even though you are sending free weapon to Israel to kill children and genocide Palestinians...
in reply to Doorbook

What I really really hate about your type of people is this attitude of "two wrongs make one right", this "I don't care about issue x, because there is issue y and x MUST suffer as long as y suffers!"

Yes, we know Palestine is suffering a crushing genocide. WE KNOW. Now if you can excuse us for just a minute, Ukraine is suffering too and we'd like to give that a second of attention as well, if you'll allow us?

A lie can travel around the world two times before the truth has a chance to put it shoes on and walk out the door.

I would honestly strike if my tenants unionised lmao

No chance of that happening here tho. I specifically even rent rooms to the immigrants who know fuck all about the local law and won’t play any funny games

It isn’t my fault that I have to argue with misinformed people every 15 minutes or so

I can assure you that I do rent rooms to immigrants and thus vote for libs because my business depends on the most amount of them flocking to capital

And also I get lowest taxes in this biz like 8% a year when wagies pay 30% or so. It’s comfortable as heck

People here really hate landlords. Doesn’t matter if they’re joking or not.
in reply to 𝓔𝓶𝓶𝓲𝓮

And what does you striking even mean?? You’re a landlord, if you strike nothing really changes
in reply to 𝓔𝓶𝓶𝓲𝓮

Piece–of–shit landlord doesn’t want repercussions for their piece–of–shit choices on rental agreements. If landlords make profits, they’re leeches on the less fortunate. Maybe look into co-opting the property… or just kill yourself and make the whole society better you fucking loser.

I’m just so over people like you. If we lived in the Neolithic age you would have been stoned to death for not contributing to society.

I'm guessing the double meaning flew right over, hence the incomplete table mentioning Tamara's site from Oregon, USA.
The thing is, I'll need further research from other countries to consider trusting these findings, even if I'm already used to being overly cautious when purchasing hygiene products.

Russia to stop 'all hostilities' in Ukraine as Putin announces 'Easter truce' until end of Sunday

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin [announces an "Easter truce'' in Ukraine according to reports
  • Putin says there will be a temporary end to hostilities from 18:00 Moscow time (16:00 BST) today until midnight on 21 April (22:00 BST)
  • Putin adds he assumes Ukraine will follow the truce and [Russian troops are ready to repel any possible violations
  • It is unclear whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accepted the terms of the truce
  • This comes after US President Donald Trump threatened to "pass" on Ukraine peace talks if no progress was made on a deal
in reply to mrsjmccrimmon

"Guided by humanitarian considerations, today from 18:00 00:00 from Sunday to Monday, the Russian side declares an Easter truce. I order that all military actions be stopped for this period."

Fuck this guy and his 'humanitarian considerations' 3 years after invading his neighour, killing its people and stealing its childen - he finally deigns to give a whole 2 days reprieve (likely to be broken) because he's finally felt a teeney bit of pressure from t'old Donald.

in reply to defunct_punk

Because given Russias track record, they lie about stopping with fighting. Multiple times.

So slap me silly for being skeptical.

in reply to Honytawk

It's just bait anyway. If they don't break it themselves (very likely to, given their history), they truce and then if Ukraine attacks, they go "look Ukraine attacked us when we wanted a truce!". If Ukraine does nothing, Russia get the breather to move troops, resupply etc.
in reply to warm

If Ukraine wants a breather they can agree to it knowing they need to stay alert for the Russians to break it.

If Ukraine doesn't want to play that game, they can just say "we'll agree to a ceasefire when you leave Ukraine permanently" and carry on.

in reply to doctordevice

You don't agree to a truce that you weren't involved in arranging.

A Fading Coal Town Banked on a Wind-Power Boom. Then Came Trump.

I did verify.

51% is awfully close for me to have such harsh feelings towards a town investing in clean energy despite being founded due to coal. But I won't dissuade anyone from sharing that sentiment.

Israel is not irrelevant on the world stage. They are a major intelligence asset. Nobody comes close to what they can do. And America knows this. They have been enabling Israel all these years hoping to keep that asset on their side. The second we turn on Israel they become a mercenary operation for our enemies.

There’s not really any way to win with Israel. They are assholes. They shouldn’t exist in the first place. And we continue to play nice with them while they kill everyone around them and threaten anyone who dares question them.

Thats the utterly BS mystique zionists like to cultivate. You have no proof at all of it-- You're just parroting hasbara propoganda.

All I see day in and day out on the news is vicious Israeli war crimes, indiscriminate violence, and land theft for 80 years and the anger caused by it.

If the Israelis DO have any intelligence, its unreliable due to their rampant of torture, and it'll be about their enemies (not ours), and visciously slanted by their insane worldview and transparent attempts at manipulation of the west to their advantage.

Israels enemies are not the enemies of the west. All we care about in that region is oil and shipping lanes. Israel wants to steal land and kill muslims. The west has every reason not to care about that, and no gain to join in it.. So we arent even strategic allies. Israelis are rich barbarian cultists who buy influence. We need to dump them, despite their so called "intelligence".

"Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented."

Even Trump's appointees are going against him here.

in reply to AdamEatsAss

If they have red lines this needs to be it. If they allow the Republican Party to send people to a concentration camp without due process, especially when they claim they can't get people back, the Supreme Court might as well fire themselves and lock the doors on the way out.
in reply to jmcs

Most importantly to Thomas and Alito, the "gratuities" will stop coming in if they have no real power.

Which makes it weird that they're going all in on wanting the guy defying their orders to continue...

in reply to usernamesAreTricky

Oakland uses ranked choice voting, which means that if a candidate receives a majority of first-choice votes, that person wins. If not, the last-place candidate is eliminated, and voters who selected that person have their votes counted for their next choice — a cycle that repeats until a candidate gets a majority.

We need this nationwide.

I don't know anything about her, but this sounds all right to me:

As for homelessness, Lee has referred to the crisis as a “moral disgrace.” She said she wants to test a guaranteed income pilot program for homeless people, hire unhoused residents to clean the streets, and work with the Veterans Administration to get veterans off the street.

Trump administration announces fees on Chinese ships docking at U.S. ports

cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/28401341

The U.S. government began investigating China’s dominance in the shipbuilding industry, where it manufactures as much as 75%-80% of fleets, during the Biden administration.

Steep levies on Chinese-made ships arriving at U.S. ports have been proposed, up to as much as $1.5 million, as part of a plan to bring more ship manufacturing back to the U.S., a policy which has bipartisan support.
