Dictatorships use solitary confinement as a form of torture, designed to break the prisoner’s spirit. Under international law, “prolonged solitary confinement” is defined as exceeding 15 days.
British citizen and 77 year-old media entrepreneur Jimmy Lai, in jail in Hong Kong, has now exceeded 1,600 days in solitary confinement, yet has committed no crime.
He has already served several prison sentences on multiple trumped-up charges, including 13 months for lighting a candle and saying a prayer at a vigil commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

NASA leveled by Trump
Not only is Trump leveling science funding at NASA, like he did with the National Science Foundation, but look closely at the budget. Beginning next year at 800 million and by 2030, 3.5 billion (nearly 20% of its budget), NASA is required to work towards “Commercial Moon and Mars Infrastructure and Transportation”. The ultimate subsidy for the commercial space sector.
They also eliminated STEM engagement program, which provided funding for the next generation of scientists to participate in NASA opportunities. I can’t wait for all this greatness Trump has been preaching to arrive.
You must be young. The Iranians and other parts of the middle east have referred to us since at least the 80s, and probably before.
When we brought a bunch of Nazis in after WWII and installed them in positions of importance (like heading NASA by Wernher von Braun) I think we gave them a pretty reasonable argument.

Consider this, we could have put them on trial, but they were low down enough to get some jail time and then get sent back to Germany at worst. We could have let the Russian have them, or we could have just executed them. All in, bringing them here and using their expertise isn't the worst thing.
What you're doing is called a strawman.
Of course one should not ignore crimes against humanity. I'm saying we are reducing people, countries and systems based on what agenda we have today.
check out documentaties about china that dont start with genocide
here is the argument
you just willfully ignore the shit they do
this is a strawman. I never said I'd want to ignore anything. You brought that up and tried to fight me for it. That is literally the meaning of a strawman. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_ma…
So no, you're trying to push red scare and that is at best naive or at worst deliberate antisocialist propaganda.
Why then even say something? The other person was dealing in bad faith themselves. I pointed out in good faith that it is okay to criticize china but its not okay to reduce someone solely on their former deeds. Its the same as calling germany a nazi shithole (but that is becoming increasingly true) today just because of the holocaust.
I blocked them because they were repeating themselves and being condescending, which i encourage everyone to do because debate isnt just being right but also being fair.
Where did I say they were THE big bad? I’m ok with hating all authoritarian regimes including the one I live under.
Why are you so big on defending their image?
You're in for a bad surprise. Especially living in so called democracies, we are not asked an neither are the people who are killed by them. We're being silenced just as much.
I'm not defending anyones image. I just dont like blanket statements. I'm currently fighting fascists in the country i live in and people are being executed. Its not cool.

Israel can go fuck itself too, they are worse at the moment.
The US is directly responsible for the innocent people that Israel kills. It's the 51st state. They are so fundamentally connected and Israel is so deeply reliant on the US for economic and military and legal connections that it is impossible to separate the two.
Israel would probably cease to exist if the US didn't give them unlimited backing and support.
You know what that means? That means it's not fucking """whataboutism""" to bring up Israel! Israel's crimes are US's crimes.

Your only argument seems to be "well there's only 50 stars on the flag, so, checkmate 😏". Israel isn't a real nation, it's just an extension of the US empire. Israel literally can not exist without US support and the US will give Israel unlimited support no matter what. They're intertwined so deeply that they can't be separated. Israel would collapse the instant the US stopped propping it up.
I repeat, it's not a real country. It was created with the stroke of a pen and will end with one. Israel's crimes are US crimes.
You don't get it yet, but I think you will. I don't even need to win this argument. History will do it for me.

Their housing bubble is a nightmare
You're saying that as if the US economy hasn't been a fucking bubble bath ever since the stock market got created. Bubbles don't matter apparently, which is stupid but this is the world we live in.
their currency is not desirable
That's the point, they don't want to make their wages incompetitively high by inflating their cost of living and thus nominal wages to the moon like the US.
all their factory jobs are going overseas.
That... is the goal? Factory jobs are low-added-value, you need educated people doing high wage jobs to become a developed country.
I'm not stanning China, there are plenty of shit things aobut the country, but looking from here in Europe, it looks like they are a better partner than the US. Both of them do genocide, have a shitty human rights record, have neocolonial tendencies, shitty worker's rights, no proper democracy, etc.
But China is at least stable as a trading partner.

I think we agree on this.
Again, I'm not saying we should trust China, or that they are a positive force in the world, or even that we should indeed trade with them. We need to put our foot down about things like that.
All I'm saying is that the US somehow got worse than them. And by "stable", I don't mean "trustworthy" or anything, it's just that the US seems to be making a sport out of going back on deals, at least we can trust the CCP to look out for its own interests and not go back on the occasional win-win deal.
Again, I'm not saying that we should make more deals with China, but that the US is no better at this point, and we should figure out how to oust both their influences.
it's not stable though I dunno how people can't see this lol.
The US and China are in the same balance beam and at times or through different perspectives it might look like one is rising above the other but you ever seen what happens when one partner on seesaw jumps off? the other guy doesn't go up that's for sure
OK I guess'.
Lol no it isn't. Do you only remember the last six months? China has been unreliable for years. The quality of their products are always questionable, lead in cinnamon, plastic fake rice, sketchy backdoor access into anything that comes out of that country. Sure.
On top of that, China is speed running the US downfall. It took decades for factory jobs to leave US, it's taking a single decade for them to come and go out of China.
Both of them do genocide, have a shitty human rights record, have neocolonial tendencies, shitty worker’s rights, no proper democracy, etc.

I can't speak for other players in the game but you who don't live here might wanna state it so I can up vote it.
The truth is though the CCP’s already sending tons of rovers to the moon
Wow just think how much more they could accomplish if they could chose their own leaders and say things they wanted to say without being thrown in jail and tortured or killed and their capital was in Taipei and they weren't held back by a ruthless dictator who was only supposed to be a dictator for 10 years but decided he wanted to remain dictator for life.
I disagree. Completely.
Large scale mining on another celestial body is similar to AI. It's not actually gonna happen in our lifetime we're not as close as we wanna believe.
We are those people in the 1800s who think everyone would have jet cars and shit by the year 2000. Nobody is that close. Likely they'll blow each other up and start fighting in space before anyone gets to mine.
We could do space mining today if their was any incentive to do it. There just isn't any reason to currently but if we start using fusion power (which China has made strides in recently) it would make a ton of sense to get He-3 on the moon.
Hell I give it 20 years before a private company at the very least tries to move one of the really rare earth element rich asteoids into an orbit around earth. From the calculations I've seen we could technically do it with current rocket tech assuming proper planet alignment.

What I've seen is an endless parade of liberals screaming China is "on the verge of collapse!!!1" for over a decade and I've seen the reality of China only becoming better over the same time period. There's no basis for your claim, it's just part of that same endless parade of anti-China propaganda we've all seen before.
And what I've seen is China become more powerful and life in China get better over that same time, while all those liberals kept screaming that China was going to collapse. I was a typical anti-China Western Marxist before COVID. The pandemic revealed that China is actually still a socialist project and that politics are in command when they shut down the economy instead of marching workers to the deaths, saving countless lives and advancing Chinese life expectancies above the US. That changed everything for me.
And over that same period I've seen the US get worse. In fact, it's basically gotten worse over the entire time liberals were screaming that China was on the verge of collapse. This is an empire in decline and everyone can see it, so even if you're anti-China I hope you can recognize the US is on its way out.
And soon enough, something else is going to happen that will give you the same experience. China isn't going to collapse, it's just going to continue peacefully developing and surpassing the US in more-and-more ways.
I don’t even need to win this argument, history will do it for me.

You keep saying liberals but I don't think you know what that word means. Are you speaking of the neoliberal western government or the liberals of America or liberals in Europe? Because they're immensely different groups. I can only speak of "liberals" in America and I promise you, you're entirely wrong. Liberals for years shook their head at all the things China was doing to take US business, never once was the liberal apparatus or voting bloc in america really ever antagonistic to China. Neoliberals like Biden were, kinda. But in the US conservatives have always beefed with China because they use the "they're taking our jobs" stick every four years and I mean do you think Trump is a liberal? Cause he's been the most aggressive to China than any US president in recent times
So I don't know what the hell you're talking about there. It comes off clueless and ill informed kind of like the rest of what you say.
The pandemic revealed that China is actually still a socialist project and that politics are in command when they shut down the economy instead of marching workers to the deaths,
Literally not what happened. They lied, arrested scientists trying to talk about COVID and denied it came from China ever while also being difficult to work with in informing the rest of the world what was going down and that by definition is absolutely tyrannical which is the opposite of socialist. China also marches workers to death pandemic or not, go look at the work culture in China it is abysmal.
And over that same period I've seen the US get worse
US never changed their dirty laundry is just more visible. Maybe it seems like it got worse but queers hardly ever had rights, abortion was always a fight, worker rights are always under assault and America is funding terrorists all over, all of this since like the 50s. Where ya been?
Sounds to me like you're 12 maybe and you just dunno what the hell you're talking about, like at all. You need to get off tiktok or whatever the source for your perspective is because it's dog shit poopie diaper.
And I'm sure Hong Kong and Taiwan pulling away from China is a sign the country is doing well, sure. Let's go with that.
The truth is if you look at history empires fall together. This era of shit post WWII is just getting ready to shift. Countries like Honduras, Mexico, Indonesia, countries in Africa, the places US and China shit on, will see an increase in everything as these empires continue to bleed. That's how it goes. Rome dies gives us the Islamic golden age, Imperial British rule falls and the US grows up, US and China will continue to bleed out and fuel the countries that can fill the void.
China isn't going to collapse, it's just going to continue peacefully developing and surpassing the US in more-and-more ways.
That's funny good joke their. I'm sure the protestors in Hong Kong and Filipinos and Taiwanese folk think China is super cool. I'm sure the secret police stations they have to watch citizens overseas and their oppression of Muslims in the western parts of China aren't indictive of a country losing control and in response tightening its grip just like the US is doing and just like every other empire that bled out their power did too.
Nobody wins an argument online and with that knowledge I've obviously won here thanks 🫰

This has got to be the most milk toast take ever. The government says they have concrete justification to interfere with a political party in a democracy by performing aggressive surveillance on them, but says their justification is a secret. Then somebody comes along and says "Huh, I don't blindly trust the government so I'm not going to support this decision unless I'm told why and can judge it for myself." In fact, if in a democracy a party tries to attack another party through non-electoral means without saying why, there are only two reasonable responses:
- This is bad, and calls into question the legitimacy of the government.
- They better have a damn good reason, and should be public about it so that the people can judge for themselves.
I've long been critical of this really aggressive defederation, it breaks the network and I believe is the capstone in the list of reasons why the fediverse sputtered out and lost a supermajority of it's users. I think it's still got a chance as the big three protocols grow more interconnected and as big platforms have started adopting said protocols, but if it's got a chance to do so I believe the community needs to get this sort of stuff sorted out beforehand.

They, openly for years, and now officially, are extrimists and their members systematically violent.
And I just noticed that, as so often with deepl, it first detected the german text as english, therefore translated (english)german to german, and malformed it, so in my working copy it read "meinen" instead of "mein". Should have double checked that, but >01:30 CET demands its tribute.

The VS is completely independent. There are no politicians behind it. Otherwise, the whole thing wouldn't make sense. Even your source says so.
The status hasn't been revoked at all. That's a common misconception. It's not being taken back, obviously. They are just not calling them extremist openly, until there is a first decision in the lawsuit. Just as any other lawsuit for eg. defamation, no matter which side is on the right - you'll first be ordered to stop openly calling the other party a liar or similar, or stop doing that by yourself. Again, your source literally states this.

All it means is that I get a notification saying "Someone you might know sent you a notification" and I get to review and accept or deny the notification depending. Plus they have to request permission to follow me so I get to check them out before accepting.
I still have tons of mutuals on .social and I get new ones all the time. While each person making the choice about whether to accept notifications or follows from a particular user is going to make their own choices, I don't think it's particularly inconvenient.
::: spoiler AfD sidebar
For their lack of adequate moderation capacity / interest, .social has one topic they tend to over-react to. AfD sympathizing isn't that one thing. Not to suggest they're right here. I'd need the thread context and a better understanding of German to weigh in on that. Moderators are human and they're going to make a bad call eventually. I'm not in a position to guess whether they made a bad call here. AfD aren't just some normal political party, though.
:::
Sucks for you but, such is the fediverse working as intended. Moderators can't be expected to have a deep conversation with every moderation decision.
I will agree that Mastodon is not as decentralized as it should be but I'm also not sure how it could be improved. Ideologically there would be a round robin style sign up for approved instances but I'm not sure if that's technologically feasible.
Why EA Canceled a New ‘Black Panther’ Video Game
The news came as a shock to many Cliffhanger employees, according to people familiar with this week’s events. Cliffhanger was actively hiring staff, and Black Panther had recently passed what EA calls a “gate” — a development milestone where executives review a game’s progress and decide whether to continue production. The team had momentum, and the project was coalescing, according to the people, who asked not to be identified discussing nonpublic information.Others familiar with the project told me that EA executives were frustrated that the game had not yet left the pre-production phase after nearly four years in development.
As EA assessed its portfolio earlier this year, it eliminated some of the projects that had been in development for a long time but had made the least amount of progress, including incubation projects at Respawn and this Black Panther game. A representative for EA declined to comment on the cancellation.
One reason for the slow progress on Black Panther was that the studio had only just begun scaling up. Many of the workers laid off this week were hired less than a year ago, including some who only joined in the last few weeks and months, said the people familiar.
Why EA Canceled a New ‘Black Panther’ Video Game and Closed Cliffhanger Studios
The project from Cliffhanger Studios would have starred a group of heroes from the comic-book franchiseJason Schreier (Bloomberg)

"And after the system (#capitalism) has been destroyed, how do you prevent what always happens in those cases from happening?"
By creating an actual democratic state to manage affairs that's led by the working class, not a totalitarian state with little to no democracy led by a vanguard party.

Its the content publishers problem.
And Amazon isn't enabling this, they're just making an Android device.
The users are putting software onto the device.
This article sets a dangerous precedent. That if Amazon doesn't lock the firestick down like Apple that they're enabling piracy.
Its not Googles nor Microsoft's responsibilities either. They helped, probably solely for money, but they're not obligated to continue to update their DRM.
This article should have framed how DRM repeatedly hasn't worked.

2) The discussion about the ~~egregious~~ insultingly high salaries both of the highest-paid actors and sportballers is one that we can have, but I do not think that one will go well for your cause.
3) I'm gonna need some sources cited that the main reason the majority of people watch sports is for "the drama".

There is expression, there is drama, there is tension, etc. Those who look down on people who enjoy watching sports are at best immature, and likely to be hypocrites as well.
Edit: To address #3, I have been watching sports for 25 years and the growing focus on drama is actually part of why I watch sports much less now than I used to. You can see it when discussion about a game starts on the topic of x participant wanting to get revenge on y participant rather than anything involving strategy. You can see it when every Chiefs broadcast mentions Taylor Swift multiple times. You can see it when guys like Pat McAfee and Stephen A Smith get paid the big bucks to talk about sports rather than people with a deeper understanding of the game. Forgive me for not having a source for my comment on an internet forum, the growing focus on drama is a common gripe of sports fans on reddit so from my perspective it is more of a fact of life than a contested claim.

However, given your clarification, I take less issue with your premise. I maintain that it was a bad comparison to actors, and that the companies within the oligopoly over sports broadcasting are all, universally and without equivocation, awful, the players are insultingly overpaid, the entire system needs to be dismantled, and that any action taken to undercut them is an axiomatic good.

Anyone else know the other apps that help make Amazon the ire of copyright?

CloudStream is good if you watch anime.
The folks on r/piracy seem to like an app called Stremio, but I haven't got that one set up yet.
I have a Jellyfin client.
SmartTube Next is an ad free Youtube client for the firestick.
And then I also have Kanopy and Hoopla which let me access media via my public library card.

It sequentially downloads torrents, on demand, in such a way that you can stream the content without ever having downloaded it.
It’s available on most app stores (though the iOS offering doesn’t have streaming, because Apple.)
Edit: I mean the file doesn’t get saved, it just pulls down the data it needs, uses it, then deletes it. When you’re done, the torrent data isn’t actually on disk.

Say you buy a used PC or android stick and want to use it for piracy, ok, doable, but you'll be doing most of the work. Kodi builds can get you there easily.
but compared to firesticks?
Firesticks have a piracy singularity going on. The entire secondary phase of cracking the OS and installing is intended for piracy. It's an open and shut, easy, one-two punch to get into the ecosystem. All of the hardware is easy to track and maintain. My cousin has a hacked firestick and he can't even open Microsoft Word. You can buy them pre-hacked with no real input or work needed on your part.

That's what I did, and I have no issues side-loading any app I want. If it's got an APK, it can be installed.

in reply to Corkyskog • • •Stremio is basically Netflix for torrents. Its interface is similar to the popular steaming apps.
Upon initial install it just looks like another paid steaming app with prices on all the content; the secret is to install plug-ins that allow you to steam torrents (Torrentio). Pair it with a Debrid service (like Real-Debrid) and you don't even have to wait for seeds. The show/movie starts playing instantly, just like the paid streaming apps. Like a Library of Babel for media, except it's real.
And the nice part about having a Debrid service is that it works any torrent, not just TV/movies. I have gigabit internet, so I can download literally any game I want in under an hour, even 100+ GB AAA titles.
Corkyskog
in reply to Psythik • • •Is it like Jellyfin? Or Plex?
I admit I don't really understand what a debrid service does or how it works, or how it's helpful for privacy... But it sounds interesting
Psythik
in reply to Corkyskog • • •Yes except simpler because you don't have to build a library of content. The plug-ins do it for you.
A Debrid service downloads torrents and uploads them to various file hosting websites, allowing you to directly download any active torrent at speeds up to 1Gbps. If the torrent you want isn't in their database (because it's less popular), then it behaves like a torrent client, except since it's running on a server you can shut down your PC and go about your day as it downloads in the background. Most torrents with at least a half dozen seeds are usually immediately available for direct download.
It doesn't really protect your privacy, per se, but it gets your ISP off your back because in most jurisdictions they don't care how much you download illegally, so long as you're not distributing the files, like you would with a torrent client. (Sharing pirated files is how they get you.)
The bad news is that these services also hit and run, so by using one you're not helping the health of the torrent. I wish they didn't do that, but I'm so used to having any fi
