Just saw this by chance: Donations and Patrons for Lemmy development surged massively on Liberapay in the last weeks!
Don't know what the exact cause was/is for this big surge - but I am glad to see it. No matter what personal problems people may have with the main devs, they are doing great work on the platform.
Also of interest, since this is a good place to plug things, other threadiverse things:
And I couldn't find a way to donate to mbin, in lieu of that:

Trump DOJ plan would let it indict lawmakers who opposed him with no oversight
According to a bombshell report from the Washington Post, the Department of Justice under Attorney General Pam Bondi is considering a plan that would let federal prosecutors investigate and indict members of Congress unfettered by traditional oversight designed to stop political persecution.
Traditionally, before such an investigation could proceed, a prosecutor would have their case reviewed by the lawyers in the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section. But that would go away under the new proposal.
The report notes that, should the proposal go into effect, "a long-standing provision in the Justice Department’s manual that outlines how investigations of elected officials should be conducted" would be shunted aside and allow possible prosecutions based purely on politics.

There's a lot to unpack here, but the title is sensational. So:
1) This doesn't expand any powers the DOJ has
2) This doesn't allow them to just indict whomever they want
3) All the skilled litegators at DOJ have left the building, and only idiots remain.
4) This group they THINK they can disband, cannot be disbanded, and their work cannot stop, so they THINK they are just going to sidestep it and do whatever Plam Blundy wants, but that's not going to happen for a number of reasons:
1) Judges are slapping the DOJ down and admonishing them left and right in court
2) They still need FEDERAL judges to even bring an indictment, WITH EVIDENCE OF A CRIME, in order to get a warrant, and then maybe arrest somebody.
3) Federal Judges absolutely hate having their time wasted, and this DOJ has done nothing but waste their time
4) Judges DO NOT have to keep wasting their time with the DOJ requesting indictments if they continue to prove in court that are acting in bad faith (mala fides). So maybe one or two tries at this, and the DOJ will never allow them to file for this bullshit again.
Blondie thinks she found something to scare people...nah. They can't do shit with this except make themselves look foolish, and get smacked down in court some more.
There are less than 2000 federal judges, the Federalist Society has over 70,000 members. They have the man power and motivation to replace them over night. At which point the law says what the fuck they want it to.
What's stopping them isn't that they lack the resources to seize total control. It's that they lack the resources to maintain control. And they're never going to have them.

It is possible for a third party to arise in FPTP elections, but it's certainly not common or easy. The UK has a bunch; NZ had a couple before moving to MMP; I think Australia has some.
It usually requires a competent and well-known politician storming out of their party for ideological differences, but being locally popular enough to win their seat as an independent or new party.
AOC might pull it off.

It would have to be in a single district; attempting multiple would definitely fail.
NZ has had a number of individual electorates where the Greens* won the seat, Labour came second, and National 3rd. With a sufficiently left-wing area and a galvanised base, it's possible.
- Note: NZ greens definitely are not the same as the US Russian plants.
It usually requires a competent and well-known politician storming out of their party for ideological differences, but being locally popular enough to win their seat as an independent or new party.
It also usually causes the party they broke off from to lose higher offices a few times because the two sides of the schism don't have enough power individually to win the bigger contests. Until one of them swallows the other.
The right avoided this by doing their "reform" from within, aka the Tea Party.
The parties do, not the people.
Would you like to remind me what a party primary is, and what effect it has on the nomination process for candidates?
Would you like to remind me what a party primary is
Ever since democrats successfully argued in court that they are under no obligation to follow their own bylaws, a primary is kabuki theater. When we have them at all.
No, no, go on, maybe you can rehash some "2016 rigged!!!" theories about how every poll was wrong (paid off by the SHADOW CABAL of the DNC, of course) and the election was stolen from Bernie.
I mean, you already outright admitted you think primary elections are meaningless and participating in them means nothing.
I mean, you already outright admitted you think primary elections are meaningless and participating in them means nothing.
I mean, the party argued as much in court.
If the Dems would have had a proper primary and campaigned on defined goals instead of nebulous feelings and orange man bad, they could have won.
The weak and poorly defined platform cost them 6 swing states. They pissed off the Amish and the Arabs, which really hurt them in Pennsylvania and Michigan. They didn't campaign for the Latino voters very well, which should have been a slam dunk given the deportation platform Trump had, which impacted the swing states considerably.
The Dems need to seriously rethink their strategy for 2028 or they are going to lose again. 2026 at this point is looking shaky in both directions, so the Dems need to get their shit together immediately if they are going to stop Rep issues progressing into a 2028 victory.

Man, I'm usually one of the people on Lemmy who is, at least, defending that the Dems are not the core problem. I'm very vocal that the failure of the 2024 election was fundamentally a failure of the American people, wherein 1/3 of the country voted for fascism and 1/3 said they didn't fucking care.
But we lost by a small margin, and Biden choosing to stay in until it was clear that he could not command the confidence of the party - which was past the point when a primary could have been reasonably held - contributed no small amount to fucking us.

Bruh, Harris, Pete, and Klob all consistently polled under Biden as first choices before they dropped out.

People want more, and the problem is that they don't let them until it's too late. All that's left is to wait until 2026 for the congressional elections, and then 2028 for the presidential elections.
But seeing that tariffs are political suicide in the elections, it is likely that in the next elections the Democrats will regain control of Congress and even better if they manage to get a supermajority in the House.

Gun Reform Groups Warn Trump Admin Settlement on Trigger Device 'Paves the Way for Mass Violence'
Gun Reform Groups Warn Trump Admin Settlement on Trigger Device 'Paves the Way for Mass Violence'
Gun violence prevention groups say that the "forced-reset triggers," which allow semiautomatic rifles to fire more quickly, effectively turn rifles into machine guns.eloise-goldsmith (Common Dreams)
In most of the country, anyone without a criminal record can buy a machine gun and doesn't need these trigger devices. Only 13 states have outright bans.
This is such a non-issue, you can convert an AR-15 to fire full auto with a coat hanger or two pieces of metal cut with a hacksaw and a file or a 3d printer. AK, AKS, Mini-14, M14, or M4 carbines can go full auto with only a shoelace. Then there is bump firing, you don't need a special stock to do that, some people accidentally do that just because they don't hold the rifle tight enough.
How about we work on why there is gun crime instead? Reduce the cost of living, increase wages on the bottom 50%, create better opportunities for small businesses, decrease the cost of higher education, promote trades as a career path, lower the cost of housing, increase the supply of low cost housing, improve public transit in urban areas, implement a severe progressive tax without loopholes, and build in-person community instead of allowing digital isolation through harassment.
In other words, why don't we fix literally everything about this country instead of looking at guns?
Machine gun sales are illegal at the federal level except for guns manufactured before Reagan's second term, and they must comply with the 1934 NFA. That law was originally put in place because mobsters were having gang fights with tommy guns in the streets. Evading the law is evading the law.
Look man, I like going to the range, and home defense is fine. But saying we should do nothing on guns specifically and just give up is nuts. Firearms are the single leading cause of death for children and teens in this country: homicide, suicide, accident.
Here's one thing you didn't list: properly funding the ATF and FBI to go after FFL dealers who illegally sell guns to criminals and then claim they were stolen. Those guns are one of the biggest sources of street crime, and I'm sure they wind up in sales to Mexican cartels too, since they're all supplied by America.
Guns are a problem. They're not the only problem, but they're still a problem.
We absolutely need to go after FFLs that allow for guns to make it to the streets.
The biggest cause of firearms deaths is suicide, that can't be addressed by going after guns. You have to address all the other bigger problems. Doing so will also address suicide, mental health, economic prospects, and other causes of drug overdoses, crimes including murder, alcoholism, etc.
You can't address gun violence by going after guns, you need to go after the actual problems and not the symptom.
For those that don't know, forced reset triggers (and the later "super safeties") are quite essentially machine gun conversion devices in all but our narrow techno-legal definition of a machine gun. Much more straightforward to use than bump stocks or crank triggers are. Any sane government would have pulled these off the market immediately and arrested anyone who distributed them. Instead the ATF approved them for sale and then walked it back after the fact, hence this legal battle.
Militia prepper types are basically saying the use case for these is for squad-level fire support, the same way militaries use machine guns. But then they'll gaslight you and say it isn't a machine gun, but also all machine guns should be unregulated.
The law operates on precise definitions.
Obviously the forced-reset trigger has pretty much the same effect as a machine gun and common sense suggests that the two should have the same legal status. They don't though because 26 U.S.C. § 5845(b) defines a machine gun as:
Any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger
and a firearm with a forced reset trigger does require a separate actuation of the trigger for each shot. It is the place of the congress, not the ATF to update the law.

Police say explosion outside American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic was ‘an intentional act of violence’
At least one person is dead after a car exploded near a reproductive facility in Palm Springs, California, according to local authorities.
Palm Springs Police spokesperson Mike Villegas told reporters the car explosion was “an intentional act of violence” but the investigation is ongoing.
Officials did not immediately say whether or not the person who died was associated with the car, but a facility official said all of the building’s staff were safe and physically unharmed.
At least also five people were injured in the explosion, ABC7 reported, citing law enforcement sources.

Additionally, no matter what any government has done so far, people are having less kids and no single country has been able to improve that. So there’s something going on and we don’t know what it is.
It's not a mystery. People can barely afford themselves and kids are expensive as fuck and interfere with having a successful career(especially for women) so they're having less of them.

That sounds suspiciously like they’re avoiding calling it ‘an act of terrorism’… which is even more suspicious being that lighting a Tesla on fire or spray painting a Tesla dealership would immediately be called terrorism, but this hasn’t been. Hmmm.
Edit: the FBI has determined that it was an intentional act of terrorism at this point.

When President Donald Trump and Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred met at the White House last month, they discussed one of the president’s passion projects — reinstating baseball star Pete Rose to make him eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame. This week, that’s exactly what Manfred did.
When I heard Pete Rose was going to be eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame my immediate reaction was to joke that "Somehow this is Donald Trump's fault". I didn't think I'd be right.
Never seen anyone so deeply desperate to leave a lasting historical mark on the world. Just like his need to put his name on everything he "owns".
Like a dog running around peeing on everything in sight and mounting what he can't pee on.
Too utterly stupid to understand he already has a lasting mark in history... It's just not a complimentary mark.

This likelihood makes me more angry than nearly anything else he's done. Unlike most other changes this cruel buffoon has made, selling off our land to private industry is permanent.
Where other people would look upon the majesty of public lands in awe, he only sees a wasted opportunity to make money. This cancer on our society has a voracious black hole where his heart would be. He is incurious, stupid, and utterly devoid of any values.

The Trump Administration has decided to permit the sale of devices that enable standard firearms to fire like machine guns, a move that gun control groups condemned.Ken Dilanian (NBC News)
Well, crap, I'm not gay, but I'll hold your hand. :) What do want? That's the interesting thing about guns, there is such a VARIETY for different purposes. Self defense, home defense, small/medium/big game hunting are all completely different.
If I'm going to raise my Kinsey scale a point or two for just a moment, there's also the aesthetic to consider. I'm not ashamed to admit I've bought a gun that made me go "Ooooohhh".
For example, when my dad died one of the guns I inherited was this:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_S…
And I'm like "Ok, that's adorable, but in .22 it's useless." Also known to be problematic. Sometimes only one barrel would fire.
But I liked the idea so I bought one of these:
bondarms.com/bond-arms-handgun…
.45LC/.410 shotgun shells
Bond Arms | Ranger II
Our intimidating Ranger II packs a big punch! An extended grip featuring a metal lone star badge insert grabs a hold on a 4.25″ double-barrel chambered to fire up to 3” .410 shot shells and .45 Colt, (also available in .357Mag / .38Spl).www.bondarms.com
OK, that's adorable but in .22 it's useless
I'll tell you what the guy that taught me used to say, " 22 or 50, no one laughs at being held at gunpoint. "
Stopping power is, for the most part a myth. I love 22 because if cheap, it's light, and the guns feel nicer in my hand. My bud uses 9mm glocks because he describes them as the "iPhone of guns" you do you boo, just make sure your Deringer has a trigger guard, that's just good safety.
They are not just inaccurate, they are impossible to shoot accurately.
Go full auto in a stadium and it will pull up and you will shoot the ceiling, or it will pull down and you will shoot the ground and maybe your leg. You might get lucky and it will lurch to the right, you will either fight it to get it back to the center or let it spin you like a top. By the time you have fought the autofire back to center it will have chosen a new direction to pull ... good luck. You will do this 2-3 times and then the clip will be empty.
Life is not a movie or videogame. Autofire really sucks ass unless you are an absolute pro at it and have a great deal of practice.
Those who would put in that much practice with auto fire would be smart enough to realize that 3 shot bursts are way more accurate and waste far less ammo.
I like how you are acting like most of us haven't played an FPS. The biggest difference is that there is no balance nerf between the damage an automatic bullet does and a semiautomatic bullet does. It's certainly leading to more gun deaths in Mexico, where a lot of these weapons are getting exported down to, although it is refreshing to act like school shootings still aren't a thing.
I fully expect for police to have to fear being "suppressive fired" soon enough, there are enough militant groups within the US that will enjoy the news, specially given the number of their members that were pardoned for Jan 6th.
First - the place to shoot is the hard part for many people. Indoor ranges don't allow you to do the kind of practice that you would need to do in order to become proficient with an automatic firearm. Outdoor ranges are quite a drive for most people.
Second, and more important - the fact that people can learn doesn't mean a lot. Most people, including most gun owners, don't. A shockingly large percentage of gun owners don't practice regularly, or at all.
It's not up to the ATF to make laws; congress is supposed to do that.
Also, "sensible" gun control is functionally no different from "sensible" abortion restrictions. If you want to fix gun violence, fix the problems that lead up to it. If you want to stop abortions, it's easier to teach factual sexual health and make sure that everyone has free access to birth control.
No suppressor, no super long mags, no belt feed, no barrel mounted grenade launcher, no incendiary rounds.
What is and what is not legal is funny in the US
Wut?
No, silencers weren't regulated into the NFA by the ATF; congress put them in there, way back in '34. You can read the text of the act here. It's in the very first section:
AN ACTTo provide for the taxation of manufacturers, importers, and dealers in certain firearms and machine guns, to tax the sale or other disposal of such weapons, and to restrict importation and regulate interstate transportation thereof.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of American in Congress assembled, that for the purposes of this Act -
(a) The term "firearm" means a shotgun or rifle having a barrel of less than eighteen inches in length, or any other weapon, except a pistol or revolver, from which a shot is discharged by an explosive if such a weapon is capable of being concealed on the person, or a machine gun, and includes a muffler or silencer for any firearm [emphasis added] whether or not such a firearm is included within the foregoing definition.
It's right there in the text.
Aside from that, the ATF per se didn't even exist prior to '72; before that, it was part of the IRS, rather than an agency within the DoJ, and before the IRS, it was part of the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

I’m confused and feel like this title is misleading:
The Novavax vaccine was previously only allowed to be used in emergencies. Meanwhile, the FDA gave full approval to vaccines by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna in 2022 under the Biden administration. Both companies are producing updated versions of their vaccines for the fall.
It seems to only be for the Novavax vaccine, and it was already restricted, but this article doesn’t say why. Don’t get me wrong, RFK is a fool, but it doesn’t look like he’s keeping people from getting the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines, and the one he is restricting was already restricted for undefined reasons.
All COVID vaccines were first released under Emergency Use Authorizations. But the "emergency" was COVID itself.
Moderna and Pfizer were the first, and have since been fully approved by going through the appropriate FDA process and undergoing clinical testing on an unprecedented scale.
Those mRNA vaccines could be rapidly developed because of the revolutionary technology involved. Novavax - a "traditional" vaccine - was first EUA'd in October 2022. It came much later and still needed to go through the same approval process, but its access wasn't restricted except to under 18s. Adults over the age of 18 could get Novovax as a standalone, or as a booster in cases where their first vaccine was not available or appropriate.
Novavax has just completed the FDA approval process and received a different authorization. They have somehow passed the review, but in doing so, it's access has now been restricted.
Why? Is it because of efficacy, or safety? The EUA was originally granted because it passed review of its safety and efficacy, but the more extensive approval process would have more clinical trial data to verify both.
Interestingly enough, the FDA hasn't stated why the vaccine received such a bizarre approval. No announcement of what, exactly is the reasoning why under 65's would not be allowed to receive it. Is it too risky? That'd be odd, considering senior citizens can get it. Is it not proven to work? That'd also be strange, because senior citizens can get it, and their immune systems are worse.
Who knows? With an anti-vax asshole as head of the DOH, who can say for sure?
Well, fun fact - this means there is no traditional vaccine that is fully authorized for normal adult use.
The mRNA vaccines bear a lot of unfounded controversy. Of the unvaccinated, many Americans who weren't entirely anti-vax but were scared of the brand new technology, wanted traditional vaccines. Many of the unvaccinated were scared of the "emergency" in emergency use authorization, and wanted to see long-term proof that they were safe.
Now, underneath the authority of a well-known anti-vaccine madman and his treasonous, self-serving felon of a boss, that option never came to fruition.
No "traditional" vaccine will be "traditionally" authorized, for the kind of "traditional" people who might just be scared of new things, and wanted to "wait and see." The mRNA vaccines were a modern goddamn miracle and a shining achievement of human ingenuity, but I get it. People are scared, panicky animals, and they'll make all sorts of rationalizations.
Those people could still benefit from being vaccinated, and now they won't have that "safe" option.
Under RFK Jr., I can only imagine why.

Top genocide scholars unanimous that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza: Dutch investigation
A growing number of the world’s leading genocide scholars believe that Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute genocide, according to an investigation by Dutch newspaper NRC.
The paper interviewed seven renowned genocide researchers* from six countries - including Israel - all of whom described the Israeli campaign in Gaza as genocidal. Many said their peers in the field share this assessment.
“Contrary to public opinion, leading genocide researchers are surprisingly unanimous: the Netanyahu government, they say, is in that process - according to the majority, even in its final stages,” the investigation concluded. “That is why most researchers no longer speak only of 'genocidal violence', but of 'genocide'.”

Since when was this “contrary to popular opinion”?
Ask The United States, Germany, the UK, and their "free press" that claims Palestine isn't being cleansed, and if they are, they deserve it.
Correct, but what the press publishes and frames, and refuses to publishes is what forms public opinion.
You ask the NYT and BBC about Gaza, they'll tell you that Gaza has always been rubble with blood in the sand.
You ask the US government and Germany about Israel's actions and motives, they'll advocate for your comments to be removed.
How a press and state operate can't prohibit public opinion, but has major influence. American press helped to cover up the Yellow cake Uranium that was falsified for a illegal invasion. It didn't stop the protests, but refused to cover protests on equal levels with Iraq/Al Quada's actions.
Plus right now Feddit is trying to censor any criticism of Zionism, Israel, and Gaza unless it's praise for the aggressor.
Article 2 of the Genocide Convention has 5 definitions of genocide, you only have to meet ONE for it to be considered a genocide.
Israel: Hold my beer!
ihl-databases.icrc.org/en/ihl-…
Article II
In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
✅ (a) Killing members of the group;
✅ (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
✅ (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
✅ (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
✅ (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
That's interesting. When I was growing up I was told it had to meet all 5, and the reason for Canada's colonialism not being considered genocide is that it didn't meet all 5.
Of course we all know what Canada did to indigenous folks was actually a genocide but the government would still tell you otherwise. Either way they meet at least 4 of these. Whether you want to say it was deliberate or not I guess is up for debate but...
If you want to be sad, read up on the Residential Schools.
1948 was 50 years before the last of those hellholes closed.
And yes, Canada has semi-officially recognized it as a cultural genocide. With actual genocide recognition passed by the House of Commons in 2022.

For people who see others as just part of a Race or Ethnicity, their victims are not persons, just pieces of a race to take down.
The aggressor's mental dehumanization of their victims is what allows them to just exterminate them as if they were animals and one way to dehumanize them is to look at them as just pieces of a "bad" Race which needs to be removed/eliminated.
Genociders target "a Race" and want to destroy "a Race" - that's how the aggressors see the whole affair: as a fight of Races.
The victims, on the other hand, are individual human beings who suffer as only thinking and feeling human beings can suffer, not as pieces of "a Race", and their suffering would be exactly the same when done the same things no mater what thier Race.
